Cleaner Alternative to Nested Switch

Hi,
I have some code that runs a simple wizard using YES_NO JOptionPane's.
The code started off relatively simple with only two questions e.g
switch (question1)
case yes
    switch (question2)
          case yes
              run command
              break
           case no
               display message
               break
case no
      run command
       break
}This has now grown into a five level nested switch statement, which apart from looking ugly, I am not looking forward to having to maintain it.
Is there an alternative solution to coding a long nested switch statement for this kind of application?
Im still fairly new to the language and principles so all Im looking for is a couple of pointers in the right direction.
Cheers
r-lo

Polymorphism would be the preferred way.
Something like:interface Question {
    boolean ask();
class Question1 implements Question {
    public boolean ask() {
        // ask the question
        boolean yes = ...
        if (yes) {
            return new Question2().ask();
        // run command
        return yes;
class Question2 implements Question {
    public boolean ask() {
        // ask question
        boolean yes = ...
        if (yes) {
            // run command
        } else {
            // display message
        return yes;
}

    Hi Tirtha,
    What you want to do in PowerShell is separate elements of logic trees into individual functions. I rewrote your script attempt somewhat to show you how to do this:
    function Show-MenuMain
    Do
    Write-Host @"
    ----------MENU A----------
    1 = option 1
    2 = Option 2
    3 = Option 3
    $Choice = read-host -prompt "Select number & press enter"
    until ($Choice -eq "1" -or $Choice -eq "2" -or $Choice -eq "3")
    Switch ($Choice)
    "1" { Show-MenuModule1 }
    "2" { Show-MenuModule2 }
    "3" { Show-MenuModule3 }
    function Show-MenuModule1
    Do
    Write-Host @"
    ----------MENU B----------
    1 = option 1
    2 = Option 2
    $Choice = read-host -prompt "Select number & press enter"
    until ($Choice -eq "1" -or $Choice -eq "2")
    Switch ($Choice)
    "1" { Show-MenuModule2 }
    "2" { Show-MenuModule3 }
    function Show-MenuModule2
    Do
    Write-Host @"
    ----------MENU C----------
    1 = option 1
    $Choice = read-host -prompt "Select number & press enter"
    until ($Choice -eq "1")
    Switch ($Choice)
    "1" { Show-MenuModule1 }
    Show-MenuMain
    I know, this really only prepares the path to a host of new questions, more than answering your current ones, but it gives you something to work with and build upon.
    Cheers,

  • Do you know if Apple are sorting out Bluetooth?  I'll have no alternative but to switch from Apple if not - it will be cheaper than changing my car with Bluetooth built in

    Does anyone know if Apple are sorting the Bluetooth problem out?  I had hoped the latest update would do it - but not so.  I now have a reat in-car phone system that's unusable with my latest phone.  It's cheaper to switch phones than the car but I'd rather not if a fix is being worked on.

    Check with the car manufacturer.
    The iPhone 5 has BT 4.0 hardware which is activated in iOS 6. While BT 4.0 is compatible with BT 2.1 (which your car is probably using) by design it turns out that some BT 2.1 drivers have bugs which make them incompatible with BT 4.0.
    Some audio manufacturers like Pioneer and some auto manufacturers have already issued firmware updates to correct this problem.
    Since there is no error on Apple's side I doubt you will see any change coming from Apple

  • Is there an alternative way to switch on wifi as part of screen is faulty?

  • Alternative for nested loops

    Hi Gurus,
    I have the following problem :
    There are 2 internal tables namely 1 &2.
    Now there is a field in table 1 'AUGBL' which should be equal to  field in Table2-BELNR.
    Now if there is a match between TABLE1-AUGBL and TABLE2-BELNR,
    so we move to table 2 to look for 'augbl' associated with 'belnr' in the same table.
    Then I have to give the following logic -
    If table2-belnr = table2-augbr,
       Then do nothing.
    Else.
    Check, for the Augbl which will equal Belnr in a different position in table 2.
    For ex:
    Table1-AUGBL = 2.
    So now we have to search a field when Table1-augbl = Table2-belnr = 2.
    Now for this record in table2, there are 2 conditions:
    When Table2-augbl = 2, (in which case we do nothing)
    or,
    Table2-augbl NE 2, or Table2-augbl = 3.
    In the latter case,  there will be another field in Table2-BELNR = 3. So we go to this record now and check for the associated AUGBL and do the same checks above.
    We keep on continuing for this till the time we do not get the Table2-belnr = Table2-augbl in the end for the same record.
    Now I want to achieve this without using nested loop.
    Kindly help as I already have wated a lot of time.
    Please let me know if there are any clarifications.

    Hey..
    Before u get the data into two internal tables through SELECT stmts.
    U can use JOIN instead of two SELECT stmts ..that wud fetch the data into single internal table..
    and that may ease ur validations and further process..
    try this out..
    Thanks and Regards,
    KC

  • Clean search conditions when switch "Saved Search".

    Hi,
    My case as below:
    a query page with an af:query that linked to a VO with *2 pre-defined View Criterias*. Criteria 1 includes field A, B, and Criteria 2 includes field A, B, C, D.
    1. User visit the query page, and default Criteria 1 is selected in the "Saved Search" list.
    2. User select Criteria 2 from "Saved Search" and input some value to field D and click Search.
    3. User visit other pages that is belongs to other task flow within the same project.
    4. User go back to the query page (the default Criteria 1 is selected), and click search.
    The problem is:
    At step 4, Criteria 1 is selected, field C and D is not included, but the search result is the same as step 1, the input values in step 1 is NOT reset.
    If user select Criteria 2, the query value of D (that was input at step 2) is still existing.
    I found this problem only happens when there is more than 1 boundled task flow, and user visit between task flows.
    I am using JDeveloper 11.1.1.3 with ADF BC.

  • When using wusa.exe to install MSU update package and enabling logging using the /log switch, what format are the log files in?

    I have been installing a number of hotfixes for Windows 7 using MSU files and the wusa.exe utility included in Windows. I thought it would be a good idea to generate separate log files for each update as it was installed since wusa.exe now supports this
    option using /log:<file name>. However, the log files created do not seem to be regular text files or any other log file format that I immediately recognize. When opened in Notepad or Wordpad you can see that they contain a lot of additional binary data
    which can't be read by a regular text viewer.
    Does anyone know what format these log files are in? What tool should you use to read them?

    Only Microsoft can manage to design something as stupid as this. If you start wusa from the command line, it pops up the alternative command line switches. For log, it just says: " /log     - installer will enable logging". It doesn't say that you
    should specify the log file name, hence not HOW you specify it (" /log:<path\filename>.") It doesn't say what extension to use for the file, alas which file type it is (" /log:<path\filename.evtx>."). You open it in notepad, you cannot read it.
    You open it in sccm's cmtrace.exe/trace32.exe, you get nothing. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO IMPLEMENT THIS IN A WORSE WAY. How can something be so bad? How can Microsoft get such stupidity inhouse, when you need to go through six interviews or something to get in??
    I cannot believe it - unfortunely, this is seen again and again.

  • Using Nested Content

    Hi
    i could see adding Nested Content option in all content pages.
    i mean we can add any no. of nested contents (Not nested properties.) to a content.
    What are tags do we have to retrive the child nodes of a parent nodes .
    hardly i could find a method
    <%=node.getChildren() %> but it is deprecated method.
    is there any alternative tag or method to retrive all nested contents?
    genrarally is it suggestable to add nested content.
    (i got thid doubt because i could not see any help on nested content in CM documentation even though feature exists, but i could find about nested properties , is it alternative to nested content?)
    thanks in advance

    As per the javadoc for com.bea.content.Node.getChildren, see com.bea.content.federated.INodeManager.getNodes() as an alternative.

  • Switch in switch??

    Is it bad code style to make a switch inside a switch??
    public void test(int a, int b){
    switch(a){
         case 1:
               switch(b){
                   case 1:
                   //Do things.
                        break;
                break;
           case 2:
                // Do things
                 break;

    Hardly a good example of encapsulation. I thought
    polymorphism and runtime typing was supposed to make
    such constructs rare.Polymorphism can be taken too far. Sometimes attributes of a single class are preferable to making subclasses. Like in this example:switch (anchor) {
      case NORTH: {resultX += widthDiff/2; break;}
      case NORTH_EAST: {resultX += widthDiff; break;}
      case EAST: {resultX += widthDiff; resultY += heightDiff/2; break;}
      case SOUTH_EAST: {resultX += widthDiff; resultY += heightDiff; break;}
      case SOUTH: {resultX += widthDiff/2; resultY += heightDiff; break;}
      case SOUTH_WEST: {resultY += heightDiff; break;}
      case WEST: {resultY += heightDiff/2; break;}
      case NORTH_WEST: {break;}
      case CENTER: {resultX += widthDiff/2; resultY += heightDiff/2; break;}
    }It really doesn't want to be converted into nine different subclasses with overriding applyAnchor() methods.
    I couldn't find any examples of my code that nested a switch inside a switch. Normally I don't object to nesting structures (I am pretty sure that somewhere I have an anonymous inner class nested inside another anonymous inner class), but since I dislike the switch statement that's probably the only reason I don't have nested switches.

    Suspend has always been problematic under Linux. It seems to be hit or miss for the most part, but here are some things you can try:
    Use an LTS kernel, tuxonice, pm-utils, etc. See Suspend and Hibernate
    Try a different graphics driver
    Tweak the driver module parameters or build your own driver.
    Unfortunately I don't have experience with the radeon driver, so I can only give you ideas.

  • Question concerning Selecting and Deselecting Toggle Buttons

    Hello Everyone,
    I am still relatively new to the adobe web suite (still in the trial period in fact). I am working on creating a mock-up of a main web page design to demonstrate and discuss with management. The decision associated with such would determine if we go forward with purchasing adobe products, continuing a redesign of our website among many other things.
    The big issue that I am running into at the moment is creating a series of interactive thumbnails.
    I have the following set up on the page:
    - A section for the actual image (full sized) complete with a title and description provided at the side for one of potentially many topics.
    - Below the topic/image section is a series of thumbnails, which the first one is set for full opacity and marked as selected. (All of these thumbnails are in a Custom Component and break down into a Toggle Button component each, if the image is unselected it remains set at a low opacity)
    - When selecting one of the other thumbnails, I need it to change the image (this part works), select/set the thumbnail to full opacity (this part works as well, given it is a toggle button feature), and lastly unselect the previous thumbnail (causing it to go to a lower opacity, I cannot figure out a way to accomplish this one)
    - In the future I intend to design side bars (left and right) for both thumbnails and the section above (effectively changing the topic to a new one)
    The ultimate idea is to create articles, provided with thumbnails associated to the article at the bottom and to allow clean alternation between the thumbnails, and likewise be able to switch to a new article (with a new set of thumbnails associated to the new article) as well.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    -Steven

    I think I found the solution of my own question. I share it in the hope that it’ll be useful to other people. Remind that I use Cp 6.1.0.319. I modified the project as follows: 1) I unchecked “Visible in output” for the button “Audio Play” (Bt_play) 2) I  modified the AA associated to the audio on/off buttons as descrived below: Action Name: Play Assign cpCmndMute with 0 Show Bt_Stop Enable Bt_Stop Hide Bt_Play Disable    Bt_Play Action Name: Stop Assign cpCmndMute with 1 Show Bt_Play  Enable Bt_Play  Hide Bt_Stop Disable Bt_Stop In this way the two buttons in the same location work well as a real toggle button! Greetings Elena

  • How can i code a fsm?

    i have design a fsm, with entry state, input state and find the action state.
    how will be the way to code it?
    thanks

    You should basically never nest switch..case statements because it is ugly, and becomes unreadable. Believe me, I used to work at a place where the software was full of 1000+ line nested switch/case statements. It was a nightmare... especially on the day somebody ran an auto-format script that messed up tab-spacing...
    So anyway, I think I undersand your homework assignment. Your fsm needs to perform different actions for the same input, based on its state. Well, you might at least consider making a method for each state. So then you have one switch...case, and one method for each state. That's fine as long as you only have a couple states...if you have many many states, then you need to design things differently.
    so for just a few states:
    public class FSM {
        private int myState;
        public
        FSM(
                int entryState
            myState = entryState;
        public void
        processInput(
                Object input
            switch (myState) {
                case 0:
                    handleState0(input);
                    break;
                case 1:
                    handleState1(input);
                    break;
                default:
                    System.out.println("unknown state\n");
        public void
        handleState0(
                Object input
        public void
        handleState1(
                Object input
    }If you have many states, but just a few ways to handle them, then you're on the right track with a mapping array, but still better not to nest switch..case:
    public class FSM2 {
        private interface Handler{
            public void handle(Object input);
        private static class
        HandlerTypeA
        implements Handler {
            public void handle (Object input){
                System.out.println("This is handling method A");
        private static HandlerTypeA handlerTypeA;
        private static class
        HandlerTypeB
        implements Handler {
            public void handle (Object input){
                System.out.println("This is handling method B");
        private static HandlerTypeB handlerTypeB;
        private static  int     statecount = 30;
        private         int     myState;
        private         Handler map[];
        public
        FSM2(
                int entryState
            myState = entryState;
            map     = new Handler[statecount];
            map[0]  = handlerTypeA;
            map[1]  = handlerTypeB;
            map[30] = handlerTypeA;
        public void
        processInput(
                Object input
                map[myState].handle(input);
    }The reason we have interfaces here is because java doesn't have pointers to functions. It's more labor intensive, in terms of lines of code, but it's cleaner, safer, and more object oriented.
    Does that help?

  • What's a DVI-to-VGA connection have to do with sleep?

    I've been experimenting with hooking my HDTV to my Mac Pro's 5870 video card. Currently I have my 27" ACD connected to one of the mini displayports (mDP) and a VGA, connected through an Apple VGA-to-mDP (active) adapter to the other mDP. When I want to use the TV I can connect the HDTV to the 5870's DVI connection with a (passive) HDMI-to-DVI adapter. It works. Indeed it works too well! Whether the TV is taking input from the computer or not the computer thinks the TV is a third monitor which can get very confusing when the mouse is accidentally moved off my ACD on to the TV (6 feet away) and I can't find the cursor. Another minor nit is that using the DVI means no audio can be passed on the HDMI so the computer speakers are used unless of course I hook up a separate audio connection.
    I could get around the 3-monitor problem using SwitchResX but I prefer not to. I'm willing to simply manually connect and disconnect the HDMI cable on those few times I want stream stuff to the TV. But as an alternative I tried switching the TV and VGA connections, i.e., connect the TV to the mDP through a (passive) mDP-to-HDMI adapter and the VGA through a (passive) VGA-to-DVI adapter.
    This second scheme also works. However because all the adapters are now passive the VGA will disconnect when the HDMI is plugged in. Ok. I can live with that and I understand the behavior due to the 3-monitor limitations of the 5xxx cards (i.e., active adapters required).
    All the above was just background and context leading to the question I entitled this post with. Forget the HDMI connection. I have the ACD connected to its mDP and the VGA through the passive VGA-to-DVI adapter (i.e., the second scheme I described above). With this configuration my machine will not sleep on its own (i.e., at the time the energy saver specifies). I can "manually" put it to sleep ("Sleep" from the Apple menu). It just won't do it on its own (and none of the checkboxes in energy saver are checked -- wake for network for example -- and no active processes are running that would explain this behavior either).
    Experimentation has shown that it is somehow related to using the VGA through the DVI. If I put my original configuration back (VGA-to-mDP) the machine will sleep on its own at the designated energy saver preference time.
    What I don't understand is what's a DVI connection have to do with the energy saver sleep setting? The only remote possibility I can think of is perhaps the screen saver is running on both the VGA and ACD and an active VGA is sufficient to make the machine think there's activity when connected through the DVI (but not when connected through the mDP).
    Of course none of this is really a serious problem. I'm only asking for academic interest.

    I know I can do that but that's not the subject of this thread! I'm only asking why would a VGA connection to DVI keeps the computer from sleeping on its own.
    And, oh, by the way, another audio alternative is something like this,
    http://www.gefen.com/gefentv/gtvproduct.jsp?prod_id=5279
    although this requires stringing a separate audio cable.
