Clearing out 'other' memory

I would like to do a little cleaning of my HD. I feel like the 97.23 GB of 'Other' is kind of alot.. Any advice to what this 'other' is and how to manage it..
P.s. I had a similar problem recently on my iphone 4. I had 7.5 GB of 'other' so i decided to clear everything from my iphone, and then restore it from an icloud backup.. the 7.5 GB of 'other' went down to 2.5 GB.

I have a GalaxyS5 and want to clear out some memory.  All my pics are in the cloud but I don't want to keep all of them.  After I sort and cull how to I move the keepers to my external hard drive?  Can I do this directly from the cloud?

    rwethereyet,
Keeping your pictures safe is definitely important! Once you have synced the saved pictures to your phone you can transfer them from the phone to your computer. Are you using the Verizon Cloud Desktop app?

  • Clearing out other from storage and old users

I gave my wife my old macbook pro.  I deleted my user profile.  She had about 160 GB of data she brought from her previous computer, and the hard drive on the macbook pro is around 330GB.  However, it is now almost full.  When looking in utilities, around 130 GB is listed as "other."  How do I clean out "other" and is it possible it's stuff from my old profile I thought I deleted?  Any suggestions on how to clean this out so the computer will not keep bogging down like it is?

Let me also update that it is Mac OS 10.9.4

  • How to clear the OTHER memory cache

    Hi there fire fox help,
I have read the page on 'How to clear the cache' but this does not seam to clear everything.
When I am editing a website on my computer and viewing the changes through fire fox everything works great, I just hit refresh.
But when testing the websites changes online (after unloading it) I can not see any changes, using the refresh button is of no help and clear the cache is not helping either.
I get quite frustrated with this as I then have to change the name of the web page just to get fire fox to refresh it properly and then change it back again.
    Thanks for your time, Max

I've tried all these and Firefox still won't load the current image. I know it's there because Internet Explorer does load it. Is there anything else I can try or look at?

  • How do I clear out "Other"

My Ipod Nano 2nd Gen 624.8 mb in "other". How do I get rid of it?

Restore the iPod and resync it.

  • Other memory how to remove

I have just upgraded the software on my iphpone 4 and spent ages trying to remove over 8gig of 'other' memory that arrived after the upgrade. I couldn't sync most stuff due to insufficiant memory
I have at last reduced it to .3 gig by unticking all but apps, syncing and then ticking other items (music, photes etc) then syncing again
What has caused this, is it an Apple bug? .

    Good day all,
I have a 4S that had 5+G of "other" that I was trying to free up.  I searched and searched, tried all the suggestions and had no success.  I tried a full restore and freed up the memory but didn't want to loose all my settings, app folders, etc.  After a process of elimination the solution that worked for me was to delete txt messages!  When I went from the 3G to the 4S I restored from a back up.  I've never delete any of my txt message history...  so all that information, photos, videos, etc were being caried from one device to the other for like 3 years!
I started with a test.  Pluged in my 4S, synced it.  Registered 5.2GB of "other".  I ejected the phone from itunes.  I deleted my wifes txt message (with whom I txt the most).  I plugged back in and "other" dropped down by an entire Gig!!  So, I tried again with another that I txt often...  and sure enough when down another Gig.
So, I decided to take the plug and start off fresh...  I deleted ALL of my txt messages and my "other" memory went down to .52gigs!
This is why a FULL restore has been successful for those trying to clear out "other" memory.  When you initiate a Full restore, you are cleaning out your entire memory of txt messages which includes large files of photos and videos!
So this is what worked for me folks!  I hope it helps someone!

  • Clearing out RAM

i'm doing graphics stuff (trigonometric line and point plotting in fullscreen IE) and was wondering if there's a way to clear out the memory when the program shuts down, as my computer runs veerrryy slow for a minute or two after i exit IE. i'm thinking i remember something like:
    public void shutdown()
    clear the shit out
can someone please help me with this? it would be greatly appreciated.

You could try setting every object that you have a reference to to null before you run gc(), but it's probably not going to get you that much. I think that IE caches a lot of Jave Runtime after it starts up, so that if you hit a java page again, it can start more quickly. For that reason, I don't think there's anything you can do short of restarting the browser.

  • Final_cut_pro-"Error: out of memory" when rendering with hidef clips

I keep getting this notice when rendering "error: out of memory." Both my external drive and internal drive have plenty of memory; 1.8TB and 101GB respectively. It makes no difference if I am rendering at full resolution or draft. I solved it for a while by clearing out some memory on my internal harddrive,
but now it is back. What is going on. This didn't happen when I was working with regular definition clips but now I am working with high def. What to do?

Drives don't have 'memory' in this context, they are storage containers.

  • What does a hard reset clear out? / can't update O...

    Hi,
I'd like to get my phone back to it's original state.  But doing a hard reset won't do that really as I've updated the firmware since then for example and I'm pretty sure I'll have the same firmware after the reset.
My problem is that I get an "internal error" when trying to update the Ovi maps to 3.4 using Ovi suite.  If I try to do it directly on the phone I just get a generic failure message with no information.
I've removed the existing Ovi maps from the application manager but I can still run Ovi maps!  It's all gone a bit strange so I thought I'd reset but I don't think it's really going to clear everything out.  So I might be back where I started but minus some of the things I wanted on my phone.  So I'm not sure what a reset really does.
Any ideas how I can get out of this state?
    Cheers.
    Peter.
    Solved!

Right - I did a soft reset and tried to install Ovi maps 3.04.  It told me to clear out some memory.  I'd been doing that at the weekend by uninstalling applications but the main problem was 50Mb of "other files".  So I only had about 8Mb free as there's around 25Mb of applications and misc other stuff (I'd moved my messages off there at the weekend).
So I did a hard reset and 3.04 has now installed.  Of course - It'll now take me some time to get everything back the way it was!
Perhaps it was a lack of space on C: that was the problem all along.  Not sure how I would have got rid of that "other files" space without a hard reset.

  • Help - "other" memory filling up very fast?

I've had my iPhone 4 memory fill up with 19GB of "other" memory within a week.  I just restored it to the factory settings, and put back only a few songs, pictures and a few selective apps.  Yet within 24 hours I have 7GB of "other" memory.
    How do I correct this?

Yes. First I restored my phone to its last back up, but that just gave it instantly 19GB of "other" memory. So I restored it as a new iPhone. This cleared the "other" memory to 0.38GB for the first 24 hours. Now I'm suddenly up to 7GB of "other" memory.
    Any thoughts?

  • My MacBook pro 2012 Mountain Loin 8.2 don't clear the inactive memory automatically when memory needed for other program so I get page outs.

My MacBook Pro 2012 Mountain Loin 8.2 doesn't clear the inactive memory automatically when memory needed for other program so I get page outs. There are much inactive memory when page outs. Why my mac does this?

That's completely normal. If other programs require memory then the system will reallocate Inactive RAM as needed. Page Outs don't mean anything.

Memory Management in Mac OS X

A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • LV2012 Out of Memory Bug when Clearing Compiled Object Cache

Here is some LV2012 weird behaviour when clearing the compiled cache and having a project with source code separated from the binaries.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Open a VI in a fairly large LV project
    2. With the VI open, clear the compiled cache:
    3. Close the VI.
    4. Open the VI
    5. Watch the broken arrow and the LV Out of Memory bogus.

    Roger,
i tracked down the issue to "ExecutionBenchmark1.lvclass:Load Core.vi" and "ExecutionBenchmark2.lvclass:Load Core.vi". If removing both VIs from the main, it is compilable.
Since those VIs have their blockdiagram removed, they have to include their compilation in order to be executable. I expect this to be the source of the issue.
Can you please check if using the default VI "Load Core" for both classes work as long as LV is able to recompile those while creating the object file for the main?
    thanks,
    Norbert
Yep, still reproducible on my 32 bit Windows 7 home machine. Attached is the fixed code.
Also, my suspicion was right. If you try to save a project in a out of memory condition, the saved project will always display an out of memory error due to a missing block diagram.

  • HT201656 Clearing "Other" Memory off iPhone 4

I was trying to do the new iOS7 update and saw I didn't have enough memory. Long story short, I basically deleted everything from my phone and still nothing. I then hooked up to iTunes and saw that I had 4.4GB of "other" memory. How do I clear that? There are lots of threads of this topic already but no real clear answer. Lots of different comments and options.
