Client for NFS fails to restart - Event ID: 16387 - Windows(R) failed a request to initialize the Network File System (NFS) redirector

I have seen this issue out there in a few threads but a definitive solution has not been posted by Microsoft that I can find. So here is the simple answer. The long answer why this doesn't work on a default install of MSNFS is going to have to come from
Microsoft and should be in the form of a hotfix.
Problem Description
On boot, Client for NFS starts and remains running. If an attempt is made to restart the service from the MMC or nfsadmin, an error occurs and nfsclnt fails to start.
Event log error:

Description:
Windows(R) failed a request to initialize the Network File System (NFS) redirector
<[d:\w7rtm\base\fs\remotefs\nfs\client\nfsclient\service.c:199] : 0: The operation completed successfully.
>.
  Client for NFS cannot start.
Windows may be low on system resources.  Try increasing available system resources by closing programs, then start Client for NFS manually.
==================================================================
PROBLEM CAUSED BY: When shutting down Client for NFS using the Services GUI, Client for NFS Redirector is not shut down
SOLUTION: Stop NFS Redirector - 'sc stop NfsRdr' - Then start NFS client service - 'nfsadmin start client'
Use 'nfsadmin client stop' to correctly shut down both the Client for NFS service and the Client for NFS Redirector.
'Network File System (NFS) redirector' is actually "Client for NFS Redirector" and not listed as a service even though "Client for NFS" requires it.
Using 'sc', details on the hidden NfsRdr system component can be queried and then used to stop the redirector so that nfsclnt.exe can reload it on start up using the Services GUI.
C:\Windows\System32>sc GetDisplayName NfsRdr
[SC] GetServiceDisplayName SUCCESS
Name = Client for NFS Redirector
C:\Windows\System32>sc qdescription NfsRdr
[SC] QueryServiceConfig2 SUCCESS
SERVICE_NAME: NfsRdr
DESCRIPTION:  Kernel-side part of Client for NFS. Enables a Windows based computer to access NFS server shares

In Windows Event long I can see the following events logged:
    Event 3002, Port Map:
Windows(R) failed a request to register RPC Port Mapper on TCP port 111.  RPC Port Mapper cannot start.
Network File System (NFS) clients use RPC Port Mapper (also known as Portmap and Rpcbind) to discover NFS protocols on remote servers.  Without RPC Port Mapper, Server for NFS
cannot start and NFS clients cannot access files on this server.
Verify that no other software is registered on TCP port 111, then start Server for NFS manually (which will also start RPC Port Mapper).
    Event 7000, Service Control Manager:
The Server for NFS Open RPC (ONCRPC) Portmapper service failed to start due to the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
    Event 7001, Service Control Manager:
The Server for NFS Driver service depends on the Server for NFS Open RPC (ONCRPC) Portmapper service which failed to start because of the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
    Event 7001, Service Control Manager:
The Server for NFS service depends on the Server for NFS Driver service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.
Based on a technet forum I have already checked and made sure there is no other service running on port 111 (command used is netstat -a -b -o).
    Dependent Service Status:
During the installation process “Client for NFS” seems to have gone well and the service started successfully. But the “Server for NFS” failed, when checked for the status of the dependent process “portmap” service failed to start with the WIN32_EXIT_CODE
“31 (0x1f)”. Please find below the query result.

As the EXIT CODE is 31 ( A device attached to the system is not functioning), I have checked device manager and made sure there is no yellow warning shown against any hardware device. Further I am not sure how to proceed and debug this issue.
Please let me know if you have any suggestion on how debug this issue further.

My solution was to run netstat -ano to identify what process was running on port TCP/UDP :111, then with the command tasklist I got PID matching with the task name. Once identified I stopped the process, rebooted and installed
the NFS service. On top of that, before installing NFS services I disabled firewall and antivirus. It worked fine for me. I hope this will be usefull for you. By the way, don't forget to enable all process back!
    Have a good one!

  • Failed to initialize the network. Check if another instance of agent is

Out of the blue a small number of my Windows XP PCs get the following error
when logging in. Usually appears while login script page is on screen:-
Failed to initialize the network. Check if another instance of agent is
    running. Contact the system administrator
Once XP has loaded ok I can manually start the Remote Management service.
Some PCs are intermittent and don't seem to get it again but a couple get it
every login. I removed the client and reinstalled. I removed the Remote
Management service and re-installed. Re-registered the PC Workstation but no
change for those who get it every day.
    I did find this:-
Failed to initialize the network. Check if another instance of agent is
    running. Contact the system administrator
    Source: Remote Management Agent
    Severity: Critical
Possible Cause: The Remote Management Agent is unable to bind to the IPX or
IP port that is being used for Remote Management service, or the ports are
being used by some other application running on the managed workstation.
Action: Uninstall any third-party remote control agent or remote control
application using these ports from the managed workstation.
Possible Cause: The protocol stack is corrupted.
    Action: Reinstall the protocol stack.
Possible Cause: The managed workstation is not connected to the network, or
    the network is down.
Action: Connect the managed workstation to the network.
I don't have any third party remote control agent installed and I've tried
the refresh of the IP protocol stack. Surprised this has started as we have
not made any changes to the network or software. We run NW Client 4.83sp1
    and NW5.1 sp5.
Anybody else had this and cleared it completely?

    Further developments:
It looks like it's a fault in the nic. it's a Compaq NC3120 Fast Ethernet
card. It used to work, but since I've wiped out the card drivers that were
in use, I'm at HP's mercy. They are telling me that the card is no longer
under warranty and won't even tell me what driver to look for. Anything I've
managed to find has the exact same symptoms:
Client works, ping to IP addresses work, ping to www.yahoo.com (etc) doesn't
work, although winipcfg shows a DNS server the same as every other machine I
    have.
Internet explorer doesn't work, even with IP addresses to local servers.
    And of course, zenrc32 doesn't work, wsreg32 doesn't work.
Does anyone know of a way of making the NC3120 work on a win98 machine?
Shall I just go buy a couple dozen netcards from a more reputable company
    than compaq?

    1 row inserted.

  • PE dism error - failed to get and initialize the PE provider

This all started with: Win 8.1 could not be installed. error code 0X8007003. I ran DISM successfully with the /RestoreHealth flag, but it made no difference to installing Win 8.1. I ran DISM again (successfully) and looked at the log for "fails".
    The repeated fail was:
2011-06-10 10:12:47, Warning               DISM   DISM Provider Store: PID=2552 Failed to Load the provider: C:\Users\ROSMAR~1\AppData\Local\Temp\0709052E-4C8D-43AD-B837-FB57E1CF832A\PEProvider.dll.

2011-06-10 10:12:47, Info                  DISM   DISM Provider Store: PID=2552 Failed to get and initialize the PE Provider.  Continuing by assuming that it
    is not a WinPE image. - CDISMProviderStore::Final_OnConnect
How can I fix this? Is this the reason I can't install Win 8.1? Should I be looking at something else to fix whatever is generating error code 0X8007003?
    Thanks.

WIM format changed in Win 8.1. You need to use the DISM from the ADK from Windows 8.1. Older versions of DISM cannot service drivers or packages for example.

It shows a number (U44M11210). I've already tried restarting my computer.

to fix this (on a PC)
1: open up the Creative Cloud control panel, and quit out.
    2: Navigate to C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Local\Adobe\AAMUpdater
3: Delete (or rename) the directory named "1.0"
    4: restart Creative Cloud

  • Choosing a highly-available, networked file system for VM images

What's the consensus here on highly-available, networked file systems for VM disk images?
    HA-NFS seems difficult and overly-complicated.
GlusterFS doesn't seem to be well-suited for this task.
Ceph/RADOS seems popular but there isn't much information available.
OCFS2 seem to be suitable but there also isn't much information available.

Actually, I still would suggest taking a closer look at what I had mentioned in your other thread:
[Use OCFS2 to Share Local Storage (DAS) Across OVM Compute Nodes|https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2438632&tstart=0]
I still think that this would also solve thus thread. In the end, there is no how-to on how to build that up and you probably will need some help from some experts. I for myself, also didnÄt configure all of that on my own - i left ASM/Cluster part for some contractor to setup and focused on the iscsi-target/initiator setup along with the multipath setup on m VM servers.
Maybe I will do a little write-up, once we get it all sorted out, since we do experience some strage behaviour of our storages boxes, while ASM hammers ob them quite hardly, but I suspect the raid controllers to blame and not the concept… ;)

  • Cloned volume gets stuck at boot "Waiting for Network File System"

I've used "Carbon Copy Cloner" many times with success and no problems (v 2.3 , default settings, make destination bootable) as I migrated to larger drives or make backups in advance of a major OS upgrade.
Last time I was successful, I was at OS 10.3.5. I use 3rd drive to boot my Mac, then clone the one non-boot drive to the other. I do the disk repairs & permission repairs as the normal course of this process, before & after. I am now at 10.3.9. I am do this clone in prep to go to 10.4 so I have a good back in the event of later problems.
When I attempt to boot from the newly cloned partition, it goes fine on the boot process until it hangs at the "Waiting for Network File System" step and never gets past there. I've never had this happen before. I retired all the steps, even ran "Diskwarrier", but no change.
I am not trying to run from a remote or network drive, just a 2nd drive in my
G4 from which I have previously been able to boot (until this last clone attempt that is).
I googled the symptoms ""Waiting for Network File System"", found it to be common, but no real answers. Is this one of those annoying UNIX things? Any ideas how to fix / turn-off whatever is hanging the boot up? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Kool,
So there seems to be a "speed-bump" around 10.3.9. No wonder I have had the same results with a different tint. I went to Drive Genius to clone this one. Results with that were interesting.
If I did a [Device] clone, it would take and show at start with 'option' key... and work just like my internal with 3 accounts on it... login and proceed like it was internal. If I did a [Volume] clone, it would not show up at start with the 'option' key... I'd have to boot it from System Preferences > Start-up Drive. Once booted, it had no login screen so all the files were accessible. I took the clone of this 3 account PB and tried it on an iBook. Had to boot from System Preferences too, also, all the account were accessible from that machine... implying that anyone who had that drive could get past/into my files that would be secure on my computer, but not on the clone. If I took the [Device] clone and booted from the ibook at start with the option key, it would not get past the login screen... altho the mouse worked and I could click on the name, that was as far as it got, Froze.
So, I have figured, for safety, a [Device] clone is it, as long as the original computer lives. The safety features for login seem to be hardwired in the chip that the clone was made from (The iBook had 2 accounts but not my 3). If safety is not an issue, the [Volume] clone is fine... like moving to a newer OS on the same computer. It would seem from your experimentations that the situations with this 10.3.9 is just a hick-up and is solved in 10.4.3 with CCC v3...
Thanks for your info... I am thinking of going to Tiger, but I am so fond of this Panther...

  • When I sync my iPhone 5 to Outlook 2010, the email addresses that I have listed as Email 1 for any given contact in my iPhone will be automatically moved to Email 3 in the Outlook file. Is there a way to fix this?

When I sync my iPhone 5 to Outlook 2010, the email addresses that I have listed as Email 1 for any given contact in my iPhone will be automatically moved to Email 3 in the Outlook file. Is there a way to fix this?

iCloud email supports 'plus' addressing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_address#Address_tags
So your friend could just add '+research' to the username part of your email address, and you setup a rule at icloud.com to put all emails sent to that address into a particular folder.
    For example:
    [email protected]
There's no way to do it without rules on the server though.

Nothing in the Acrobat 8.x product family is compatible with Windows 7 (or any contemporary OS).
The Acrobat 8.x product family passed into End of Support way back -- (November 2011).
The current release of Acrobat (XI) is compatible in Windows 7.
    Be well...

  • Btrfs May Be The Default File-System For Fedora 16

Having a somewhat odd interest in different types of filesystems, I'd thought I'd share this snippet I wondered across.
Brought up on the Fedora development list are the plans for Btrfs in Fedora, which provides a target of Fedora 16 when EXT4 will be replaced by Btrfs as the default Linux file-system on new installations.
Fedora was one of the first distributions to deploy support for installing the Linux distribution to a Btrfs root file-system, while the Moblin/MeeGo camp has already turned to it as the default file-system, and now Fedora may finally have everything ready and are comfortable with the state of this Oracle-sponsored file-system.
With the intended Fedora deployment of Btrfs, they will also switch from using LVM as the disk's volume manager to instead relying upon the volume management abilities built into Fedora itself. Fedora / Red Hat developers have previously already worked on taking advantage of other Btrfs features, like snapshots, to provide system roll-back support by creating a copy-on-write snapshot prior to each yum/RPM package transaction.
In order to meet the Fedora 16 Btrfs target, Btrfs support needs to be merged into Fedora's GRUB package (or a separate non-Btrfs /boot file-system must be used), Red Hat's Anaconda must be hooked in to properly utilize Btrfs and its volume management features, and the Fedora LiveCD must be re-worked a bit to handle Btrfs. Additionally, the fsck support for Btrfs must be completed. Oracle's Chris Mason is nearly (circa 90%) complete with this task.
Before Fedora 16 arrives we still have Fedora 15 to worry about, which will continue to offer Btrfs as a file-system option while EXT4 remains the default.
Canonical is also evaluating when to switch to the Btrfs file-system and we may see that move similarly happen for Ubuntu 11.10.
This would seem to imply that fedora is giving btrfs the big thumbs up! They currently release twice a year, and  fedora 15 is (I believe) Due out this May, so it wouldnt be too wrong to surmise that come Christmas btrfs would be the standard install option. However, I have always thought of fedora as being a little bit of a testing bed for red hat enterprise, so reading between the lines, I am thinking they want to release btrfs to the wild, and get the bugs sqwished so it can be incorporated into red hat, which is a good thing all round, for all concerned.
    Quote blatantly ripped from phoronix.
    wikipedia btrfs
    kernel.org btrfs

There are, as I understand it, three big issues keeping Btrfs from hitting its final "stable" release:
    1) No true fsck (as of November, a fix is due "any time now")
    2) The logic used for subvolumes (a sort of "virtual LVM" setup) in Btrfs is wholly different from that used in Ext*, JFS, NTFS, HFS, etc; because of this, there isn't yet a single script/program that will accurately display space consumption.  Instead, the user needs to run a couple different commands and extrapolate.  A little annoying, but it doesn't affect stability.
    3) A bug in the COW aspect of the defrag command which, if run with an incorrect flag, can cause a doubling in the amount of metadata on the filesystem (and thus the amount of space it consumes).  Again, it won't wreck anything, but would make management tedious if one needs to restore a snapshot to get rid of extra cruft.
These are all mentioned in the FAQ's on the Btrfs wiki, though the wiki doesn't give priority to any of them.  I'm guessing that, if Fedora 16 will be using this later in the year, the Oracle folks have told the Red Hat folks that they're planning on plowing through these issues very soon.

I can't find a temp directory. where is this and how do I fix it?

Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.

  • SQL Agent Job failing - not using credentials in the config file for Data source

    Hi
We have an SSIS pkg, that is secheduled as SQL Agent job using proxy account. The pkg contanins data source for connecting different SQL servers and the proxy account do not have access to the external DBs. The data source credentials are stored in the Config
    file.
Why the job is not using the credentials in the config file and try to use the proxy account and failing.
Do the proxy account need access to all the external dbs in the pkg, and then what is the purpose of the config file.
I am sorry, i am not SSIS person trying to understand. If any one can explain tha will be great!!
    Thank you!
