Clone XP HDD to Bootcamp

I have a clone copy of my Windows XP hard drive and want to install it on my Mac. If I have to install Windows in bootcamp how can I move my cloned hard dive to the Mac?

@jconn5:
Here is an "overview" of how to do this. If you're not an advanced user, you'll need to research more or wait for other users to elaborate.
1) use Boot Camp Assistant to allocate the new space for Windows. Cancel the process after it completes.
2) on your current Windows installation, add an entry in c:\boot.ini that references the location of the boot camp partition you just created on your Mac. This allows you to boot windows from the new location after its moved. This is typically partition 3 on most Macs. Run "diskutil list" in Terminal on your Mac to isolate the new partition number Windows will boot from. then, add this line to boot.ini:
   multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Boot Camp" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
3) run SysPrep in Windows to allow it to be cloned. This is complicated and beyond the scope of my answer, so research it well.
4) connect your hard drive that contains Windows to your Mac and use Disk Utility to create a backup image of the windows partition.
5) follow these steps (except for #1 which you already did) restore your Boot Camp partion from your backup image and make it bootable: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10835653

  • I already partitioned my hdd via Bootcamp, supports downloaded, and windows is on an external USB. How can I start installing Windows now? at startup it doesnt show up as bootable device...

    hi,
I am having a problem installing windows via bootcamp.
I already partitioned my hdd via Bootcamp, downloaded and copied all the supports for windows, and windows is on an external USB as well. I had to stop the process the other day, so i shut down the computer. Now I am trying to boot from the USB, but I cant get to that point where the computer should restart and windows would start installing.
. After restarting, holding command, it doesnt show up as bootable device.
How shall I move forward? My disk is already partitioned, and if i start the whole process from the beginning, it wants me to partition again - although I already made a 100GB partition for windows.
    Please help me out.
    best,
    Zoltan

So, here is what happened when I tried to make it.(sorry for quality, i had to take them by phone)
At first when I opened it I saw that I could simply resolve it just by stretching the arrow at the bottom, giving the 100 GB back which I partitioned before via Bootcamp. At this point options was not available.
I didnt do it because you mentioned earlier that it might be not designed to install windows.
The second thing I tried I choose 1 Partition from Partition Layout. This time Options were available but I didnt see anything like GPT, the onces that are optionable are on the screenshot.
What do you think how shall I move on? I was thinking to give it a shot with option 1, just stretch it back and try everything from scratch.

  • Need to Clone my HDD to a New One

I'm upgrading my stock 160GB hdd to a 500GB WD. The thing is i want to clone the new hdd with data i have on the old hdd so i can just pop in the 500GB and use my MBP like nothing ever happened. Now I have an old hdd enclosure with the connectors so (how to transferring data .. cloning) is covered.
My question is what's the best free software available to clone my hdd.

  • Disk Utility to clone my HDD to SSD?

    Hi and thanks for reading.
I have a MacBook Pro Early 2011 13'' and I am considering the chance to upgrade my HD to SSD.
I found a tutorial which is explaining how to clone it by using Disk Utility Only, without any third party software https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh4iHJyL7AU
    My questions are:
    1)Is this possible and reliable?
2)Will the Recovery Partition be cloned aswell in the process?
3)Any negative aspect wrt to Carbon Copy Cloner or similar software?
    Tnxs.

Yes, it's possible and very reliable.
The Recovery HD partition is cloned automatically.
It's simpler to do than with CCC.
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the SSD drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Put the SSD into an external enclosure so you can clone your HDD to it. When you finish test to be sure the computer will boot from the SSD:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the SSD icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
If all is well, then remove the SSD from the enclosure and install it in the computer.

  • Upgrading MacBook Pro 13" (mid-2010) HDD with Bootcamp Partition

I'm upgrading my macbook pro's hdd from 250 gb to 1tb. My OS is lion 10.7.5 and i also have windows 7 installed on my bootcamp partition.
The following are the details to the HDD i plan to buy.
Samsung Spinpoint M8 1 TB Laptop Internal Hard Drive (ST1000LM024) -
    2.5 inch Form Factor
    SATA 3.0 Gbps Interface
    1 TB HDD
    5400 RPM Spin Speed
I need your advice on if i m buying the correct hard disk. If not please advice me one.
And please also tell me how i should upgrade my hard disk. I know how to physically install the drive but i ask of you to tell me how to clone my current hard disk with my bootcamp partition. Which software to use, precautions to take etc.
    MacBookPro 13" (Mid-2010)
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) and Windows 7 Ultimate on bootcamp

Those are the correct RAM modules for you model (the 13" being the only mid-2010 model that can use 16GB of RAM - but those modules will surely get you to 8GB!).
Am I right in assuming that you want to purchase a SSD to be installed in your boot bay and that you want to install the Samsung drive in the optical bay? Unfortunately, your link points to a rather sparse description of the drive - I see the 2.5" but I don't see the depth (which should be 7-9.5mm and not a mm more).
I'm just unclear about whether you're looking for a new spinning drive as well as a SSD and whether or not the drive will fit (just a minute - OK, found some more info - the Samsung drive is 9.5mm so it should sit just fine in your machine: do you still want a SSD?).
Note that the 2TB Samsung probably won't speed things up much - it's a 5400rpm drive: if you could use a 1TB drive, you could get a faster, 7200rpm drive.

  • Can I clone my HDD to a new HDD without buying an external enclosure?

Sorry to start a new thread, I can't seem to find a solution to my problem.
I have a new 250gb hard drive that I want to swap out w/ my old overloaded 80gb in my Powerbook (running 10.4). I also have a 3.5" USB external hard drive that I have my user folder backed up to (I read I can't boot from that since its USB). I also can't find my original OS X install disk
I figure I could buy a 2.5" external and copy everything to my new HDD in there and then install the new HDD my Powerbook. OR I could buy a new OS install disk and after swapping hard drives I could install Tiger on my Powerbook and then copy all of my files from my external.
Is there any way I can do this without having to buy a new 2.5" enclosure for my old 80gb hdd (which probably won't last much longer), or buying a new OS install disk? Thanks!

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Sorry to start a new thread, I can't seem to find a solution to my problem.
No, no, feel free to start a new Topic anytime, it's almost always better.
Well, if you had access to another Mac, you could use FW Target Mode to copy it both ways...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
But without an Install disk, you'd have to clone it with carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

  • SDD + HDD (With bootcamp) Setup

Hi guys i need help setting up bootcamp with my ssd and partitioning my hdd.
So i already bought my converter for HDD to optical bay. what i need to know now is how to set all of this up
    Heres my plan
    1. Install SDD to the main drive, move HDD to the OPtical drive. Leave optical drive because i dont need it
    2. Install Lion onto SSD
    3. Install windows 8 via Bootcamp
Now Lion and Windows 8 will both be on my 256 ssd each will have 128gb partitions
I need to know how to set up my HDD now.
What i plan to do with it is split it up into 250gb partitions for Lion and Windows respectively
i plan to put my uncommonly used apps/games on the HDD along with pictures, movies, downloads.
the question i have is how to set up the HDD after partitioning.
can the HDD have a directory like D://computer/programfiles/games
or will it just act like a usb where all the files are scrambled into individual user created folders.
I would like to know mostly because of my steam games that i plan to run and if the HDD acts liek a USB,
when installing multiple games it would be unorganized
Oh yea this is a fresh install no migration im going to just transfer my documents.
    Thanks for your replies!

You can't. Apple has made it so Windows will only install from a built in DVD drive. Once you take that out there is no way to install Windows. If you install Windows first on the SSD with the DVD drive installed once you take it out and replace iot with a drive Windows will refuse to boot, and maybe even OS X.

  • How to clone my HDD on my Pavilion dv7

I would like to clone my Pavilion dv7 HDD.  It has a WD 1T HDD.  I purchased another WD 1T HDD from bestbuy and a StarTech HDD Duplicator.  It fails during inital Cloning.  Called StarTech and they said I need to find out from HP if there was a HPA (Hidden Protected Area) on my drive.  Can anyone tell me if there is a HPA on my HP HDD?
I really want to have a full backup of my drive just in case.  My lap top is two years old and I use it a lot.

Hello themanafreak.  I understand your notebook is getting warm during use.
First, you should ensure that the cooling system of the notebook is free of dust and debris but cleaning the notebook as per these instructions.
Also, another good step to take is to ensure that you have the latest version of the BIOS installed.  I can locate the latest BIOS for you if you provide me with your product number.  This document can show you where the product number is located. Finally, I do not know of a way to increase the fan's speed itself but you can set the fan to "always be on" by doing the following.
Reboot your computer and press F10 until the BIOS loads.Navigate to the System Configuration section.Ensure that "Fan Always On" is set to enabled.Navigate to the Exit section and save your changes.
    Have a great day!

  • Clone Stock HDD to New 850 EVO Pro - T440s

    Hello All,
I was wondering if there is a good tutorial somewhere on the proper sequence of steps to successfully clone my existing HDD to the 850 Pro SSD.
I am most curious as to what bios settings needed to be made before, during, or after the cloning process (AHCI?)
I purchased a USB 3.0 to SATA cable to help with the process but don't know if I take the old drive out first and connect it to the cable, or connect the SSD to the cable and start the process.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
    1. download cloning sw from Samsung's support site. That sw is free of charge.
    2. connect new SSD to the usb-sata cable, keep HDD inside of the laptop. Will hope there is enough output on the USB port for SSD powering.
    3. install sw you've downloaded and launch that one.
    4. perform the cloning entire (!) HDD to the SSD, not selected partitions. You can even choose Auto mode. It'll resize the SSD partitions in the proportions HDD has. Later you can resize them yourself, manage as you need, using OS Disk Manager.
    5. No needs to change BIOS Setup settings. Of course, AHCI mode is a right choice.
    6. exchange drives, resize partitions, manage them. If the OS is win7, reinstall Lenovo R&R
Or use another free tool, Macrium Reflect. It has backup/restore features also.

  • Can I use disk utilitiy recovery to clone original hdd to a new one

    Hi,
My original hdd refuses to boot up, and using disk utility via recovery mode to try and fix it just gives me an error "disk utility stopped repairing the drive, salvage data and format etc." giving an error about invalid node structure or something. Tried using target disk mode with a friend's mac when I was at work but the drive didn't even want to mount. Assuming it's about to die, I have just bought a new hdd (XT Hybrid) and since my mac is pre-Lion era (2010 model) I don't have a built in recovery mode, but strangely enough hooking up my old hdd with a dock and option-booting to it I can still access the recovery HD partition on it.
So I was thinking if i can essentially "clone" my original hdd to the new one using the restore tab on disk utility, and try using disk repair on it to get it working? or is there another app I can use that will do this (being mindful that I don't have access to another mac or the OS on the HDD to run it, so it'll have to be "live", and preferably free)
Or should I just cut my losses and just put a fresh install on it...
Yes I do have a time machine backup, but there's two reasons I want to see if this works - one is that although time machine is quite up to date (within a week I'm guessing, can't remember), it's obviously won't have the new content created during the day(s) before I was able to plug in my external hdd, and secondly since I don't have access to another mac to create a lion install usb drive, I'll have to use the internet recovery, and knowing my internet connection, 4gb download would take probably overnight and nearly a whole day to finish (assuming it doesn't drop out).
    Thanks in advance.

  • Best way to clone a Windows 7 Bootcamp Partition?

I have a 1 TB hard drive that has 2 partitions, one for my OS X install and one for my Windows 7 Bootcamp which I am running parallels off of, and I want to move to a 2TB hard drive and am wondering what the best solution might be to clone my Windows partition to move it to the new drive. I will be using Carbon Copy Cloner for the mac partition.
I am assuming I need to partition the new drive, then use bootcamp assistant to make the new bootcamp partition, and then use something like Casper from within windows to clone the windows 7 partition? Can I run that while just running in parallels? I am assuming I can.
I see that people used to use a program called WinClone on the mac side, but it seems to have been discontinued, and was never updated to work with Windows 7.
Thanks for any help you can give me, it is appreciated.

I don't know of any free imaging programs for Windows.  I use Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery (a.k.a.: Ghost.)  I've also used Acronis Trueimage in the past.  Both work well and are quite popular, but are not free.
For situations like you describe, I prefer to reinstall Windows rather than image.  And then install the current versions of whatever programs rather than move over all the leftover garbage in the Registry and old DLLs, etc.
In fact, if you're using Parallels, then if you made a typical virtual machine rather than have Parallels use your Boot Camp Partition, then you wouldn't have an issue "moving" Windows.  A "typical" virtual machine is just a bunch of files so "moving" Windows means just copying the files within OSX.  If you need the full performance of Boot Camp (i.e.: Photoshop, Autocad), then fine, but otherwise I say take this opportunity to reinstall Windows clean as virtual machine.  Then when you want to move to a 3TB drive in the future, you're good to go.
Additionally, reinstalling Windows would avoid you having to buy an imaging program for Windows.  So no $$$, just a few hours of labor.  And if you reinstall Windows as a virtual machine, then the future "move" would still be no $$$ and even less labor.

  • Os x in ssd and how to install win8 in previous hdd by bootcamp

I want to remove my optical drive on my macbook pro(101) and replace it with a ssd (80G).
If i move my os x to ssd .Can i install win8  by bootcamp in my previous hdd disk.

From everything I've read, it might be possible, but you will have to do some serious hoop jumping to make it work.  To use Boot Camp, you must install on the primary drive in the portable computer, and you must install from the internal optical drive if the system shipped with one.  That would mean that you would not be able to have the SSD in the optical bay when you install Windows 8, but it does not mean that you can't install Windows before you put the SSD in the optical bay.
As a side note, depending upon which MacBook Pro model you have, putting an SSD in the optical bay is not a wise choice.  Some models have issues with the SATA link negotiation process, and in some models, the drive is "logically disconnected" at random times, which would not be good if you are using the drive as your boot drive.

  • T410S clone old HDD to new SSD failed at the last moment, any suggestion

I just purchased a samsung 840 250GB SSD and want to replace my current 250GB Toshiba HDD in my T410s.
I used the Samsung Data Migration Software to clone the old disk to the SSD. However, everytime it came to 99% completion, it pop out the message "The target disk disconnected -0001 [0xffffffff]" and then the cloning failed. It seems all the docs in C: was copied so I tried to boot from the SSD but it said "missing boost mgr". So does any one know what happend? How can I clone my old disk to the SSD and use the SSD to boost the system? I don't want to reinstall anything.
    Many thanks!

Is the Recovery Partition a problem or the System_Drv Partition cause the problem?

  • 2 HDD iMac & Bootcamp question

    Hello,
If I have an iMac with 2HDD's, either 2 internal or 1 internal and 1 external, is it possible to setup boot camp with Windows booting off the secondary hdd and not the hdd with my OSX partition?  If so, how?  Looking at the support guide for boot camp it mentions to do that I would need to remove the drives of the lowered number bays but I'm not intending this setup for a Mac Pro.
    Many Thanks!
