Adding attachments to Reader enabled forms in Adobe reader

I am creating a form for a user where they need to add an attachment to the form from Adobe Reader.
They also need to save the form locally, as this is a low volume usage, approx. 100 uses in total the rights are being enabled in Acrobat Professional 8.0
Functionality all works fine until the form is reader enabled and the script no longer functions.
the script being used is as follows
var oDoc = event.target;
oDoc.importDataObject("Strategic Research Plan");
var d = oDoc.getDataObject("Strategic Research Plan");
app.alert("The name of the file you attached is: " + d.path);
I have seen some comments indicating the file system cannot be accessed when rights have been applied, does anyone know if this is the case? or if there is a way to make this work.
this is being done with Professional 8 and Reader 7.02 or later
Any comments will be appreciated!

Hi Pat,
Yes I was using Firefox 19 indeed. This certainly fixed it.
Thanks for the help!

  • Cannot open a PDF form in Adobe Reader 7

    Hello
I have developed a form in Adobe LiveCycle Designer 8. The form has java script embedded in it to do validations. The form has Usage Rights enabled and works well versions 8 and 9. However, when I open the form in Adobe Reader 7, I am getting an error message asking me to download a higher version. When I view the form properties in LiveCycle Designer for this form, I have the following settings:
XDP Preview form: Acrobat 7 (static PDF form) under defaults tab.
Under compatibility tab, I have the following settings:
Form Type: Acrobat 8 (static PDF form)
    Text Formatting: Version 7
    Event model: Version 7.
Much appreciate if someone could tell me how to make this form compatible with Adobe Reader 7.

thanks Jono But I cannot see any option to set Target Version.
the options I have are XDP Preview format and PDF Render Format which are set to Acrobat 7 static PDF form.
I have set a permissions password on the form using Acrobat 8 and under Password security settings , I have set the compatibility as Acrobat 5.0 or later. However, When I look at the form properties by opening the same form in LiveCycle, the compatibility still shows Acrobat 8 static PDF form.
How do I get this form to be opened by users in Adobe 7?
    Appreciate your quick response.

  • Signing forms with Adobe Reader

We have created forms using Adobe Acrobat, and have enabled usage rights in adobe reader.  Some individuals are able to create digital IDs and sign without difficulty, but others can sign some forms and not others.  The weird thing is they click on the signature field, and nothing happens.  Any ideas?  We have been encouraging everyone to get the latest version of adobe reader...

    Hi Lea,
It is possible that the form was opened in version 6 or 7 of Acrobat and the usage rights were broken there. Once upon a time (like all good stories start ) when Reader Rights were invented we only made Adobe Reader obey the rules. If you opened a Reader enabled document in Adobe Acrobat you could do anything that you could do in a file that wasn't Reader enabled. The theory being that why should we limit the functionality in Acrobat (which peopled paid a lot of money for) just because the PDF file was Reader enabled. The problem was, if someone using the full featured Acrobat did something to the file that is outside of the range of Reader enabled operations it broke the Reader rights. The person using Acrobat did not know this and everything appeared all well and good to them. Unfortunately, the next Reader user to open the file got a message that the file was Reader enabled, but the rights are no longer valid and to contact the form author.
To fix this, beginning with Acrobat 8, if Acrobat encounters a PDF file that has been Reader enabled the same rules that are enforced in Reder are now enforced in Acrobat. That's why if you look on the Security tab on the Document Properties dialog it says that some features are restricted. But, Acrobat 6 and 7 can still break the Reader rights.

  • Reader Enabled Forms with Acrobat 8.0

    Hi,
I am considering upgrading from 7Pro to 8Pro and need to confirm some aspects of the new features for applying reader rights to forms. I have a number of forms generated in Lifecycle Designer 7.1, where the user is using the Reader version to email the XML data.
If I reader enable these forms with Acrobat 8 Pro, will the User be able to still email the XML data and also save the completed form locally? In addition will it be possible to inport and export XML data into & out of Reader Enabled forms?
In addition do you know what the story is with "500 users of the forms"? Is is 500 per form over the lifetime of the form? Some of my forms are distributed to different Clients and I am not sure how this will work
    Any help/guidance gratefully appreciated ;-)
    Thanks, Niall

It should, yes. Can't confirm 100% as I haven't tried.

  • Personalized reader enabled forms

HI, Here is my use case:
    1) Visitor completes an HTML form on website
    2) Info is stored in local db, some transformations are done etc
    3) Some info is then populated into fields of a PDF reader enabled form
    4) pdf saved and emailed to visitor
    5) Visitor enters additional information into the form saves it and and sends to a company rep
    6) Company rep enters additional info in form, saves it and sends back to visitor
    7) repeat 5 and 6 as neccessary.
    8) Form is printed
Where I am at implementing this
    1) I have Acrobat X and have created "reader enabled" form
    2) Using 3rd party tool (ABCpdf) I am able to populate pdf form fields via webserver script
    3) PDF is emailed to visitor
    4) Visitor is unable to enter data because form is no longer "read enabled"
This is were things fall apart.  As soon as the 3rd party tool touches the PDF it is no longer a "reader enabled" form. This is true even if all the 3rd party tool does is "open" and "save" with absolutly not other operations performed on PDF, the simple act of opening and saving disables the "read enabled".  I have spoken with the vendor of the 3rd party tool and says that there is nothing they can do about this.  I have experimented with other tool vendors and the same seems to be true.
    Questions:
    1) If instead of ABCpdf I used the Acrobat SDK would I be able to programmically populate my form while having it remain "reader enabled" ?
    2) If I installed Acrobat on my web server and used the Core API would that work?
    3) Is this what LiveCycle is for?
    4) Looking at the the LiveCycle portion of the Adobe website and it looks like there are many different products. Which is the minimum product for this use case?
    5) Is there a way to use LiveCycle that doesn't involve having the PDF submit the data to the back end directly?  I really do just want the info saved in a PDF.
    6) Since I have no need of digital signatures or some of the other features I have read about with LiveCycle, should I just drop PDF from this use case and use web forms instead?  (I would be done by now if I had started with this option).
Much thanks to anyone who can answer these questions.

Thanks Bernd,  I will look into LiveCycle Reader Extensions.
This is supposed to be a short term solution to help smooth workflow while a full web portal is being developed.  The web portal will provide access for customers, sales, partners, etc.  and emailing pdf's around won't be part of it.   So this solution is supposed to be for the next siz months so I would rater not spend more then a day or two on it and I have already burned a day
"transforming form data (FDF, XFDF, XML), which works much better with Reader, "
Can you tell me more about this?   Is this like shooting an XML file at a PDF for presentation?
    Thanks

  • Settings that I need to change so no restrictions on reader enabled forms

    Hi,
I have a reader enabled form that needs to be filled in with a digital signature that needs to be added with a submit button to email to client however I don't want the restrictions. Just wondering what the settings are that I need to change so it only sends the data instead of the whole PDF form (so there are no restrictions) ?
    Cheers

    Thanks.
So I've done the doc as xfdf and even though it still only saves and sends the form data it can still be viewed as a pdf with the new filled in content and printed nicely with the content. This is fine. Is there any expiration date as to how long this data can be view for? And just to confirm there are no restrictions on this plus the designer can use their copy of Arobat to create these forms, not the client? The client can also still view all the submitted forms fine if they don't have acrobat pro?
The only limitation is that signatures will not work.
    Cheers

  • Can a reader enabled form do this ... ?

I have a flowable Dynamic PDF form that pre-populates form fields based on a schema , etc. <br />It was designed using Live Cycle Designer 8.2 and Acrobat 9.0 . <br /><br />When I am using it with Acrobat - I usually go to <Forms> ... <Import Data> and select the file that I need to load using the file browser dialogue - <br /><br />Can a Reader enabled form - also do this -???????<br /><br />Can you recommend a good close alternative to this capability if tit is not available in Reader 9.0 ?<br /><br />Thanks

It's not about server use. Have you read the information on creating plug-ins for Adobe Reader?
There is a process you need to go through, called the RIKLA process ("Reader Integration Key Licensing Agreement"). Reader will not load plug-ins unless they have a specific certificate embedded in them, and Adobe will not give you this certificate until you have had your plug-in reviewed by their RIKLA team. There is also a cost involved, based on how your plug-in will be used.
It is *highly* recommended you initiate the RIKLA process before doing any development as they have very strict guidelines on what they will and won't approve for a RIKLA key. Make sure you get everything approved by them before wasting time developing something they may turn down.

  • How do I change the color of font in a fillable form in Adobe Reader? How can I check if the writer of the document has given permission to edit color and not just add text?

How do I change the color of font in a fillable form in Adobe Reader? How can I check if the writer of the document has given permission to edit color and not just add text? Please help! I'm technologically challenged.

Most forms (99% or more) are created for simple text input, where you cannot change anything.
The creator of the form could allow Rich Text input (which allows you to change font, text size, color, etc.), but frankly I have never seen such a form, and I wouldn't know how they look.  But I'm sure they would show some kind of controls to alter the text appearance.

  • Filling out a form in adobe reader

Im filling out a form in adobe reader for a scholarship. It was going well until I hit a certain section. Instead of typing the words horizontally, it was typing them vertically. Is there any easy way to fix this? I dont want to have to handwrite the entire thing.

That's an interesting form. It looks like it started out as an XFA form that was created in LiveCycle Designer, and somehow converted to an acroform on a Mac. Whatever the process was resulted in setting the rotation on some of the field to 90 degrees. As Mike said, there's nothing you can do about it with just Reader.
If you had Acrobat, you could set the proper rotation for the fields. If you really want to do this and don't have Acrobat, you can install the trial version of Acrobat 10. Or you could try contacting the creator of the form and get them to fix it.

  • Free way to dynamically build a form that adobe reader can fill out?

It's 2008 and we don't have a open, free way to dynamically build a pdf form that adobe reader can populate with data? Why is Adobe charging for this sort of thing? Does this make sense to anybody?

    > Why is Adobe charging for this sort of thing?
That seems to me the way economics works. People charge for things
that other people are prepared to pay for. It's no good trying to
charge for things that nobody will pay for.
    >Does this make sense to anybody?
Adobe's shareholders, I would think, who will sack Adobe's management
if they do not make money.
By the way, the PDF specification is open. If you want something for
free, why not implement it and share it with the world, who will
surely be pleased. (You will not be able to implement a form that
Reader can save, however, this is based on trade secrets).

  • Can I save a filled out form in adobe reader

How do I save a filled out form in adobe reader?

When you fill out a filled out form in Adobe Reader, it is saved automatically when you quit the app (unless you crash). You could email the filled form, and it will open correctly filled out on Reader or Acrobat on Mac or Windows. (Warning: It may not look like it got filled out if you view it in Mail, Dropbox, or another iOS app, but it will appear correctly in Reader or Acrobat.)

  • Sumbitting Forms in Adobe Reader

I am unable to submit my form using Adobe Reader.  When I hit the submit button, I am prompted to choose a desktop mail application or internet mail application.  I choose desktop and my Outlook account opens.  I see the file attached; however when I hit send, the message closes and I am returned to the original form.  I return to outlook but don't see anything in my sent file or my outbox.  The form owner has also told me that they have not received my responses.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling reader, and I also tried repairing reader.  My co-work who users reader only and outlook had no problems.
    Any ideas?

Figured it out … something to do with having 2 Outlook profiles loaded on my computer.  Even though I was logged into my personal email profile, the file was being stored in the second profile’s outbox.  As soon as I logged into the alternate profile, the form was sent.
I’m not sure how to change which profile forms will be sent from, but at least we know where the file went.
    Thanks again for your help!!
