Cloning Effects in FCE: How to do a zig zag crop & blur the boundary ?

Hi there,
I am trying to learn to do clones of boy in FCE. I managed to do it in Sony Vegas Pro & looking forward to learn to do it in FCE.
I am trying to to make 8 clones of my boy to fit in the video. I use 8 tracks of video (one for each clones), just like I did in Sony Vegas Pro.
The problem I am facing is the cropping tools in FCE is just a straight horizontal or straight vertical line to reveal the video underneath the track.
But because of the 8 clones & it is cramped, in some places, I need to crop a diagonal or curve lines. In Sony Vegas I did the curve line by clicking many straight but shorter lines. But how to do that in FCE ?
Another problem I am facing is the at the boundary of the overlapping videos, I can see an obvious straight line. In Sony Vegas, there is a function to blur the lines at the boundary. How do I do that in FCE ?
Thanks

You can try the 8-point garbage matte, but there are no matte drawing tools in FCE.
Thanks Tom,
1. Is it true that matte drawing tools are only available in FCP ?
2. how do I find the 8-point garbage matte ? Any video tutorial to see ?
Thanks

A few days ago I cropped some clips. Today I played the clips and one of the clips is severely trimmed. How do I restore the clip to its original size?

In the inspector, go down to the "Crop" section and hit the "reset" arrow in the top right-hand corner. This will return the clip to its original dimensions.

  • Achieving a Camera Flash effect in FCE HD?

    Hello.
I am trying to achieve a camera flash effect in FCE HD, but I don't think there is any effect that will do this. Does anybody have any ideas of how I can go about creating my own?
Basically I have a scene where there is a group of people in the film, and I want to add sounds like a camera shutter going off, and add a corresponding number of flashes to illuminate the group for a few seconds.
Any ideas? I am sure there was an effect like this for iMovie, but I can't find any reference to that either...

I'd like to add to what Tom wrote...I find that two frames is just about right to produce the flash effect.
As for the sound, start looking on the many sound effects websites out there. I'm sure you will find it and can download it for a reasonable fee. Or you can make it yourself by recording your own camera's shutter.

You can do that in FCPX too, as all the things you cited are listed separately in the inspector.
Here's a little gotcha. Let's say you've color corrected a few clips and you've applied an effect to one and want to paste it the other clips. You switch off color correction and copy the clip. You select the other clips and paste effects. What do you think happens? The effect is applied, but the color correction is applied as well, only it's switched off as it was in the first clip, so all the color correction on the other clips is lost. Fun, eh?
I'll try to replicate your gotcha - but no, that doesn't sound like fun at all!

  • 'Ken Burns Effect' in FCE?

I'm working with still images in FCE, and need not only to zoom in or out (Ken Burns Effect), but also need to pan around (up & down) (left & right) within the photo. I suspect that what I really need to do to achieve this, is to shoot the photo with a cam-corder, and achieve my goals while shooting. But... is there possibly a way in FCE to do this type of movement on a still image in the editing stage?
    Thanks, Robert01742

Shane Ross tutorial is about FCP that provided advanced keyframing before FCE. Now if you have FCE 3.5, that tutorial fully applies to FCE as well; it doesn't to FCE 3.0.
FCE 3.5 was released in spring 2006, so the Apple Manual you are talking about must be about FCP, I guess...

  • Zig Zag Effect - How is a segment calculated on a circle?

I have a perfect circle, to which I have applied the Zig Zag effect. I have specified 2 ridges per segment. If I am correct in assuming that a "ridge" is the high, outer part, I end up with 6 ridges on my circle. If I specify 10 redges per segment, I get 22.
So what does Illustrator consider a segment on a circle, and other than trial and error, how can I get a desired number of ridges?

Ridges Per Segment means Points Per Segment. Expand Appearance and then count the points.
Then try it again, but set the Size slider to zero.
In both cases, you'll have 12 points; the original four and eight added (two per segment).
You have six "star points" because there is an anchorPoint at each trough and each crest; 6 pairs of trough and crest makes six waves.

  • Created date for JPGs used in FCE - how to view and sort by

In FCE I need to view and sort by the date created not date modified on JPG images. How do I do that?

Why would the developers prevent users from using information about when they TOOK the pictures rather than when they edited them? Seems like a real deficiency in the program to me.
I make movies using 100s of images from a variety of photographers and put them in chronological order. Having to go to Finder on every one is impractical.

  • Easier Colour Isolation/Pleasantville Effect in FCE 4.0?

I'm aware of the mechanics in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9162727#9162727
But was hoping someone had a better or easier way of doing it now in the new FCE 4.0

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You can reproduce the pleasantville effect in FCE with this workflow:
    1-duplicate your clip on V2
2-apply a chroma keyer on clip V2, select the color you want to keep in final composite. Pay attention to check the "invert" box in chroma keyer filter setting.
3- add a color corrector to V1 and set the saturation to 0.
You can color correct the V2 to saturate the apparent color or change it, but be sure to add any CC filter below the chroma keyer in filter stack.

  • How to use Linux legally for business in the US

    Hello.
I am doing some research on software patents and how they inhibit businesses in the US from using FOSS.
My question is, basically, what would a business have to do in the US to use Linux in place of Windows/Mac and make sure they are not violating software patents? Violating these patents (for example, including an illegal H.264 codec in a company's system image so that video can be played by employees) present a serious liability to US businesses and could potentially discourage them from abandoning a proprietary OS for a free one.
One portion (of many) of this discussion I do not understand is how does one guarantee their system is clean of illegal codecs? For example, assume if one used his/her package manager to delete any codec-related packages he/she could find. If this person used a web browser to navigate to a website that included in-page H.264 videos or sound effects encoded using MP3, would this content merely not function (meaning, the person would be legally safe but unable to play the content)? Or do web browsers have these illegal codecs built in? I don't understand how website programming works enough to know the answer to this particular question.
I would appreciate any insight on this issue (and/or any thoughts you might have on this subject).
    Thank you for your time.

See distro's to avoid here if you are in the US:
    http://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html
And, linked from that page, see ones that should be safer:
    http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html
    With Parbola:
    https://parabolagnulinux.org/
Being Free and based on Arch.
Now, the problem, completely free is very picky about the hardware it will run on so you will want to procure hardware specifically built to run under a Free system without issues.  Licensed distributables you can get away with using, for example: Adobe Flash Player.  Just accept the license agreement and you should be good to go.  The minefield is that somewhere in even the Free code there could be a patent lying in wait.  Something that someone in the US patented and the Free systems programmers were not aware of it.  This is an issue in the US because commercial Operating Systems such as Windows will indemnify their users against patent infringement.  On Free systems however you, the business using them, could end up being on the hook for significant damages.
The reason a completely Free system is very picky about what hardware it will run on is because all those binary blobs in common Linux distributions contain code that just makes stuff work.  Without that you have to make absolutely sure that what you have will work with just Free software.

  • How to Unload and Reload a Composition into the same HTML page?

    TLDR:
When loading multiple Compositions into a html page via AdobeEdge JavaScript, how do I remove/delete/unload a loaded composition so that it can be added/loaded to the same page again later? I am open to options not mentioned here, but this is done externally, not within Edge's limited code abilities (working with multiple comps on one page).
*Note: I am making comps in Edge then loading multiple within my own JavaScript/HTML external pages. This programming is NOT done within Edge's code.
    Overview:
I could have more than 50 compositions to load into my page, but only one is displayed at a time. In order to make this easier on the user, I load 5 into the page in divs with display: none. I set the id of the first one to an id that has my css to show the content properly. When clicking next, that div is set back to an ID that has hidden css values. Going forward and back works the same. This functions properly. This puts all the obvious preloading in the beginning so the user doesn't have to wait again, as comps are preloaded in the background while they are viewing other comps.
As the user moves farther, I drop the first div and add one on the end with the next comp. This works fine. I can go forward all day, no problem by removing the first div element and adding one to the end. This should make memory not horrible, since theoretically, the comps would be removed as needed...
    Problem:
The problem is if the user wants to go back. If I drop the last div and add one to the front, the comp (which was loaded and dismissed earlier) cannot be re-loaded. It also cannot be re-added, even if the div is cloned and re-added later.
This is the code I am using to load the comps:
    $.getScript('comp_' + i + '_edgePreload.js', function() {});
    Options:
The options I have thought of (and not found a way to make them work) in order of preference:
Fully unload the comp from memory, that way when I make the call to load the comp, it will act as if it has never been loaded before. (Is there a way to unload a comp completely? I haven't found one, but the API is sorely incomplete) **I want this one to work very much.
Ok, maybe you can't actually unload a loaded comp. Can you re-add it to a new div? I have printed out every option I could thru AdobeEdge's interface, and cannot find a way to re-make a div the way it was. Heck, I'd be happy to load the content into a non-child element in JS, then append to html when I actually want to display it. I can't find how to re-setup the div, which has the correct Class and is set up the way it was when the comp was loaded the first time. (this option is bad because it seems all of the comps are still in memory, but at least it would work)
Worst case, I have tried this and ALMOST got it to work. When I removed the old divs from the page, I cloned them and added them to an array of objects in JS. Then, when going back, I pushed them back out, so it was an EXACT copy of the original div, all content was the same, all id, class, style, etc was the same. Unfortunately, AdobeEdge seemed to lose the ability to talk to it. (AdobeEdge.getComposition('EDGE-MyUniqueIdentifier').getStage(); // returns undefined). How do I tell it to re-associate the div with the object that still exists here? And obviously, this is an awful solution, since it appears that all of the comps stay in memory, but I was desperate to simply make it work somehow.
If you need code examples of any of my attempts at the previous options (I have tried them all extensively, and unsuccessfully), I can provide it. I hope someone has found a way to deal with this or has links to actually useful information. Most posts I have found simply tell you to load all your comps and hide/unhide them as needed. This works for small-scale, but when you have a lot of comps to move between, it becomes less of a viable solution.

Exactly the same problem here. Could anyone from EDGE TEAM answer to this question?
How we can UNLOAD and LOAD same or another animation using SAME or DIFFERENT dinamically created DIVS?
Affter loading the second animation AdobeEdge.getComposition('EDGE-MyUniqueIdentifier').getStage() returns undefined.
    Thanks for ther support.

  • How do you move a sound clip in the timeline?

I have not had this problem before. I have put many songs into the timeline, and repositioned them. Today I pulled up a project and attempted to reposition a song to fit in better with the clip, and I'm unable to do so. I can't select the song, or anything else. Obviously I have set or locked up this track, and I can't figure out how to unlock if that is what I have done. I have 6 songs on that track, Audio track 2, and I can't reposition any of them. I can't even remove them from that track. What am I doing wrong?

Hunt, most of my music files, over 9000 songs, are mostly mp3 files and a few are wma, and because of copyright laws I wouldn't use them in a commercial project I'm working on anyway. When I am working on a project for a client I will generally use higher quality WAV files. This project was being done just to learn some new techniques, gain some more experience with PPCS4, and expand my knowledge with the program. I have this huge number of music files and styles to work with, so I can do a great deal of experimentation to see what different songs can do to the mood of the video.
As a test, I did put the exact same songs into the timeline on a different audio track. The problem track is audio 2, and I duplicated those songs on audio 3. I did the exact same editing. I faded them in and out the same as before. Split one song into 3 sections had parts of it come in and out over a video section of 9 minutes duration. They are working perfectly. I was just working on one section of that project a half hour ago, and I was still able to select and move each of the four songs on that track any way that I wanted to. However, the track just above it in that same timeline, Track 2, is still frozen.
Hunt, just a moment ago I solved my problem. Still not being that familiar with the program, two days ago I know that I was playing with all of the controls, and I obviously hit one of them without knowing one of its side effects. I hit the show "show track keyframes". I'm sure that you know it, but I didn't realize that when that function is selected, you can't do much else with the track but play with those keyframe. Even though I didn't have the track locked, in the traditional way, it was still, for all practicall reasons, locked. I unchecked that function and now everything is back to normal again on that track.
Something very simple, as many things turn out to be when you understand it. However, maybe someone else will make the same mistake, and my posting here will help them.
I will use your suggestions for using .WAV files. Thank you again.

    Terry,
What is the purpose of using the .WMA files? I'm sure that you have a good reason, but they can be problematic, at best. I only use them as a trasfer medium, when I need to get a DD 5.1 SS soundtrack into Audition for editing. There, I break them out into 6 discrete .WAV files, edit in Multi-track Mode and then usually Export as the 6 discrete WAV's to be encoded to DTS, or similar.
If you do not have a compelling reason for using the .WMA, try PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit and see if the issues go away.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes please,

It's more tricky than it sounds.
First of all you need to select the main subject and place that on a separate layer on top. Then you also need to knock out the same from the underlying layer, otherwise it will contribute to the blur.
Second, none of the blur tools in Photoshop give a credible result. It doesn't look blurred as much as viewed through frosted glass. Even the lens blur filter gives this frosted glass effect. A proper lens blur is a very complex optical phenomenon, and to create that illusion in software requires very sophisticated mathematics.
There is a plugin from Alien Skin that is the most convincing I've seen to date, it used to be called Bokeh but is now apparently called Exposure with some added functions. Even so, use very carefully and sparingly; it's no magic bullet. Nothing's worse than easily spotted slapped-on effects.
