Itunes startup takes minutes on win xp

Dear forum readers,
As soon as I installed iTunes v6 on a Win XP (Windows XP Home Edition, Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600, Packard Bell NEC, Intel Pentium IV ~2390 Mhz) I experienced very long start up delays with the software.
The thing took minutes to start up, even with no iPod attached! After extensive searching of the apple discussions I uninstalled Quicktime and iTunes. The long startup delay continued to appear, but if you quit iTunes and restart, it starts up much faster.
does anybody have an idea what the fault is?
pIV, 2,3 Ghz   Windows XP   see above

hi tomasio!
I also removed the tasks related with iTunes from my AV-Guard Processlist, so that should not causing the startup-delay either.
hmmm. let's just pursue the security software angle a little further (basically, this is just an elaboration on Katrina's initial thoughts about your case).
i've seen similar symptoms reported in some strange cases where security software wasn't affecting the processes, but rather was interfering (apparently) with reading/writing/generation of the itunes library files in the itunes folder:
What are the iTunes Library files?
so let's try an experiment. turn your antivirus and/or antispyware off, and try launching and shutting itunes down again. does it behave a little better under those circumstances?
keep us posted.

  • ITunes startup takes ages

    My 10.5 iTunes suddenly started to load in 4 mins 35 secs (I timed it)! After loading, it works just fine and it worked fine a month ago. I haven't done anything unusual with it since then. I have win7 64bit, 2 yrs old HP Pavilion dv5 with 4GB ram. I tried reinstalling but it did not help.

  • How long does a HANA instance startup take?

    In a previous thread Lars Breddemann wrote:
    Data stored in row-store tables will be loaded into the main memory immediately on instance startup.
    Data stored in column-store tables will be loaded upon first access, except when it has been specified that the table should also be loaded during startup.
    Even if the persistent storage is located on SSDs, doesn't that take a really long time to start a large HANA database?
    Is there already some rule of thumb about how long it takes in real life to start a large HANA database?
    Or can you simply say that HANA doesn't impose a bottleneck (or other significant delays) but startup primarily depends on reading the data from persistent storage and thats it.
    In my imagination, many HANA customers would want to load almost eveything from column storage during instance startup. So imagine a 1 TB HANA database reading 1 TB from SSDs and also creating indexes for column storage during instance startup. What is the order of magnitude for instance startup: Seconds, minutes or hours?
    Regards,
    Mark

    Hello Mark,
    here's some more background: Tables are either in row or in column store. Row store tables are loaded into memory during startup. Column store tables are set as a default to be loaded on demand i.e. the system loads columns when necessary. You can change the preload behaviour for column tables using ALTER TABLE (see http://service.sap.com/hana > SQL Reference).
    Since most data will be stored in column tables, actual startup time is indeed pretty quick. If you want to avoid a performance hit on first data selections, you could create a simple SQL script that executed a LOAD statement your most critical tables and run it once after start up and when it fits best to your requirements.

  • My iPod takes minutes to eject

    When I eject my iPod from the computer through iTunes, the Safely Remove Hardware option, or through My Computer it will take minutes to eject. My friend connected his iPod to my computer and it only took seconds for it to eject but he owns a 30GB. My iPod will continue to say "Do not disconnect" until finally it ejects and I can remove the iPod. What's the deal? I'm using USB 2.0
    iPod Video 60GB   Windows XP Pro

    So here's another tidbit that I just discovered: if the Visualizer is on in the iTunes window, then this 9th second freeze does not happen. In fact, if you hit ctl-T during the 7th second, view a couple of seconds of the visualizer then ctl-T again at the 10th second, the freeze does not happen at all.
    ..So there's probably some "track listings" iTunes<->iPod usb communication initiated 9 seconds into a track, the iPod doesn't give back the correct response which puts iTunes into an "infinate loop" that overwhelms the PC's CPU until a certain # of these loops have occured and then iTunes gives up and returns to normal operation
    ..apple? are you there? is there a fix in the works? is it just my iPod that does this? should I return it and try another unit?

  • Does any one know , how to delete the others in itunes. it takes lot of space

    does any one know , how to delete the others in itunes. it takes lot of space, i wanna delete that... Actually what it contains

    Those are the data of the installed apps. Don't listen if someone says that it's an iOS, because it is not. On your iPhone, go to general > usage. It will show you all the programs installed on your iPhone. If you click any of them you will see how much of "others" it has (documents and data)
    There's no way to delete it if you want to still have those apps. You can reinstal those which has the most "others" but after some time of usage, it will raise again.

    Then when I try to click on the screen again the screen goes opaque and I get the same message re " Mozilla Firefox not responding" - and it is minutes before I can get back in to close down screen.
    I have downloaded Fire fox version 4 and this is still happening.

  • My itunes will not start in Win XP. I get an error that says MSVCR80.dll can't be found. I am scared if I just reinstall iTunes that I will lose all my music and apps that are in the old itunes. What can I do.

    My iTunes will not start in Win XP. I am getting an error that says MSVCR80.dll can't be found. I am concerned that if I just do a reinstall
    of  iTunes it will overwrite or delete all the music and apps I have on the current app that won't start. When I boot the PC I get the following:
    APSDaemon.exe - unable to locate. MSVCR80.dll not found. Reinstalling application may fix this problem. How can I get iTunes started without losing
    all my music and apps? Thanks

    It won't unless a problem occurs. Back them up, uninstall iTunes and all related components, and reinstall them.

    HI

    That's unfortunate.

  • When installing itunes 10.5.1 for win 7 64 bit get message that installer is 32 bit.

    Atempted to install itunes 10.5.1 for Win 7 64 bit. Receive dialog box that the installer is 32 bit. Points me to an address in Apple for Bonjour Print Services for Windows. After clickin on OK the install proceeds but Itunes will not start.
    Itunes has also reformated the library so an older version of itunes can nolonger read the file.

    I got the same message about the network resource that I can't access.  The only difference is that I couldn't install Itunes 10.3 because I can't remove the old version of Bonjour.  I couldn't get rid of anything in add/remove programs, but I went into my program folders and deleted everything that had to do with Itunes.  I also ran a Windows Cleanup Utiltiy.  Nothing will work.  I still can't remove Itunes, Bonjour, Quicktime, MobileMe Control Panel, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Application Support, or Apple Software Update in add/remove programs because they are on a network resource that I can't access even though I deleted them from the program folders.  This is very frustrating!

  • Dialog with a lot of XML content takes minutes to open in IE7.

    Good day to all.
    This is my first week with JDeveloper ADF, so, please, be forgiving. I have a page, which has this code
    <af:commandButton text="Show XML" id="cl2"
    action="dialog:showxml" useWindow="true"
    windowHeight="200" windowWidth="500"
    partialSubmit="true">
    When clicked, this one is invoked:
    <f:verbatim>
    <jsp:include page="xml_original.xml"/>
    </f:verbatim>
    The xml file is 500KB. The dialog pops up very fast in Firefox, but in IE7 it takes minutes to open. When opening it in the page, without the dialog, the performance is fast.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

    Does it open fast when you load the xml file manually in IE (without using it from the ADF / dialog)?
    something like http://<host>:<port>/..../xml_original.xml ?

    == Some time back, beggining with Firefox updates, at least three, or more updates ago.

    Thanks for the tip. I took the following steps:
    1) Backed up the existing profile (presumably corrupted somewhere);
    2) Deleted the existing profile;
    3) Moved the existing Firefox to the Trash and downloaded a fresh copy;
    4) Started Firefox (thus allowing it to create its default profile)
    5) Copied the following files from the backup copy of the previous profile: places.sqlite, key3.db, signons.sqlite, permissions.sqlite, persdict.dat, cert8.db ---
    I'm posting this from a Firefox browser, so I guess I'm OK now.
