Cloning Oracle Applications

Hi all,
We have this situation.
We have made some modifications in our production init.ora file (source of cloning) initPROD.ora,
for example we have changed the sga_target parameter from:
sga_target = 1G
to
sga_target = 2G
After that we have finished the cloning procedure to new target instance and value of our modified parameter is still old value of sga_target (1G).
Do we need to change manually every parameter we have changed on production (source of cloning) or there is some other way to include this changes in new cloned instance?
Thanks,
Regards,
D.

    Hi,
I was going through metalink doc 406982.1 Cloning Oracle Applications Release 12 with Rapid Clone.
    I couldn't understand a few points.
I would appreciate if someone can guide me regarding the following queries.
There is a statement in the doc
1)An important principle in Oracle Applications cloning is that the system is cloned, rather than the topology ....
--What is meant by topology in this description?
2)The Cloning methodology posted on this document requires full Autoconfig complience.
    --didn't get this point.
3)Note: In the copying tasks below, UNIX/Linux users should ensure that the symbolic links (soft links) are preserved when copying. On most UNIX platforms, this can be accomplished with the cp -RH command. Consult the UNIX man page for the cp command to check the parameters available on your platform.
--what soft links are being talked about?will the regular cp -R  command not preserve the soft links?
4)For patching AutoConfig on the E-Business Suite R12 instance, AutoConfig needs to be enabled on both the applications tier and the database tier. (387859.1)
--HOw do I check if AutoConfig is enabled or not?
5)Why do I need to synchronize appsutil on database tier from application tier?
6)Why do we need to maintaain snapshot information?
    What does snapshot actually do?

  • Cloning Oracle Applications Release 11i

    Hi,
for Cloning Oracle Applications Release 11i , is it ncessary to copy jre, oui and oraInventory directories from source database tier file system to trget ?
    Many thanks before.

Applications / EBS is discussed in this category http://forums.oracle.com/forums/category.jspa?categoryID=11 (and there are more, if you look at the forums home page)
But, in general the oraInventory must exist to be able to patch or otherwise maintain the installation. Wouldn't think copying directories is a supported cloning method... Again, check with the proper forum. And use the Search function!

  • How to reduce the size of cloned Oracle Applications Instance

How to reduce the size of cloned Oracle applications instance, so as to save the storage space for the cloned systems.
How can we remove unimplemented modules in the instance so that we can reclaim the space occupied by them.
can any please suggest on this..?

    mumbai,
I would recommend to leave it as it is.
If you can add some inexpensive HDD to your test system then do so.
The Apps DB storage decreasing process is quite painful and isn't straightforward.
You can’t just delete unused schemas & tablesapces (if they are not used than they are not consuming reasonable space anyway). The modules in Apps are using each other procedures and objects. The effect of deleting one module (schema) is highly unpredictable.
If you will do something like that than you will not be able to patch your cloned system after that.
Some things can be done however in order to reduce size of a testing Apps system:
    - Decries UNDO & TEMP tablespaces. Normally you do not need that big tbs in test system as you have got in the production.
    - If your REDO LOG files are quite big and you have got a lot of redo groups you can recreated smaller REDO log files.
    - On Apps tier you can delete OUTput and LOG files
In case you still would like to decrease data volume in your testing system you need to take a look on some tools which provide data subtracting capabilities from Apps DB. This process has to be quite intelligent. The tool have to know the data structures in APPS DB and subtract data in the way to not harm logical relationships between records. After a subtracting process you will need to make multiple FULL exp/imp cycles in order to reduce physical space consumed by the database. Beside the fact that those tools are quite expensive you will need to spend a lot of your time to implement those.
BTW: That is the size of you production DB? Have you analyzed which module takes most of the space? May be you can identify top 10 objects and try to archive a data from those object preventing the future grow of the production database.

  • Oracle application cloning error

    Hi
I tried to do the cloning in oracle application 11.5.10.2, but I got the following error control file creation failed, now my database status is nomount stage, now I create the control file manually its possible please give me the solution.
    Regards
    D

    Hi,
What is the complete error message?
If you have managed to create the control files manually, you can follow the steps in (Note: 230672.1 - Cloning Oracle Applications Release 11i with Rapid Clone), under "Appendix B: Recreating Database control files manually in Rapid Clone." section. Otherwise, you will have to shutdown the source database properly, take a backup, and repeat the normal cloning steps.

  • Recteaing database in Oracle Application

    Dear all
I have two on prod and dev .there is any way to refresh database without recloning again .
    like using rman ?>>>>
    Best Regrards,

You can use rman hot backups in conjunction with rapid clone, but you cannot just use rman, unless you can guarantee there were no applications changes like patches since the last refresh.

  • Oracle application binaries

In addition to checking code into Harvest, my client requires application binaries to also be checked into Harvest.
The challenge is that the Oracle Fusion Middleware suite is very large (over 20Mb).
    1) Are you aware of other options for checking in application binaries?
    2) Are you aware of specific Harvest limitations for application binaries, including file size limitations?

    Hello,
    The procedure seems OK.
Don't forget to also backup EBS software, including:
    [INST_TOP]
    [APPL_TOP]
    [COMMON_TOP]
    [OracleAS Tools ORACLE_HOME]
    [OracleAS Web IAS_ORACLE_HOME]
The most straightforward database backup should be cold backup.
To test your backup you might during a downtime period stop the server and restore the backup on a separate sever with the same mount-point layout, user, os-setup, etc, and temporarily the same IP-address and hostname. Or restore on a separate server and run the cloning scripts as per Note 406982.1 : "Cloning Oracle Applications Release 12 with Rapid Clone" or Note 230672.1 : "Cloning Oracle Applications Release 11i with Rapid Clone". The pre-clone must have been run in the source env before of course.

    Hi
I am looking for documentation on cloning a production HTB instance to a test instance
Kindly let me know where I can find the documentation for the same

Oracle Healthcare Transaction is part of Oracle E-Business Suite so you just need to follow the steps in Rapid Clone documentation.

  • Oracle Application Server 10g Cloning

    Hi All,
Could anyone please advice on How we can create a cloned copy of 10g AS(including infra DB) for DR purpose.Any document or guideline will be highly appreciated.
    Regards,

    Hi,
    </p>
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think cloning is fine to copy or clone a middle-tier instance. But for a copy of infrastructure DB one needs to use the chapter next to the referred one.

The term cloning is commonly used for copying the systems but in Oracle AS, it is for copying the middle-tier instances only. That difference is often misleading.

  • Oracle Application Server 10g Cloning - Urgent

    Hello All,
I have been given a new assignment which involves Oracle Applications server 10g, i am new to oracle application server and hoping that some one will please clarify my doubts.
i have to clone a production machine (Solaris 10) which has oracle AS 10g, this machine had oracle database 10g before and just the application server was installed on it, i have to clone a test environment for this machine, i have the following two doubts
    1) Is it possible to just install Oracle Application server 10g on a machine which already contains oracle 10g database, if so then what about the database that gets installed when installing Oracle application server 10g.
    2) How to clone the above production machine, should the oracle 10g database be cloned first and then oracle application server 10g cloned on the new machine?
    Eagerly waiting for a reply

    2) How to clone the above production machine, should the oracle 10g database be cloned first and then oracle application server 10g cloned on the new machine?1) Yes, it is possible. The DB that comes with OAS as the infrastructure DB for it (I presume you are installing a full OAS with infrastructure and midtier both) does not affect the DB you already have on your system ... obviously ... as long as you install them in their separate homes.
    2) I always say, this term cloning is somewhat loosely used in general communication meaning making copies. In OAS context, Cloning works for middletiers only. You cannot clone an infrastructure.
To make a redundant/alternate environment for OAS, you can do the following:
    - a) either use the same infra on machine 1, and install another midtier and register with the same infra.
    - b) or install a separate infra on machine 2, and also a midtier registered with it.
Here for the first option a), Cloning can be used because you can (*only*) clone a middle-tier. There are pros and cons for this setup, including that you share the SSO, and OID, and hence users and groups bases, etc on those two environments - something that you may or may not want. But then there are also some way-outs to avoid them or minimize their effects too. Please see the following reference for cloning and search on Metalink for how to minimize effects, once you get better familiar with the processes.

For b), you will need to Stage a server as defined in this reference.

There are some notes on Metalink which address issues about benefits or procedures of Cloning and Staging an environment too.
There are some other ways to export/transport your applications to another instance across DB. Please also read about them.
    hope that helps!

  • IStore - Cloned Apps Schema to access standalone Oracle Applications

Client has business across different continents and are using standalone oracle ebusiness applications across the locations.
They have recently bought an single iStore license and wants to use it across the locations. Oracle has recommended to buy four licenses of the same as they have standalone oracle e-biz installed at four locations.
Client is not happy buying so many licenses as they may have business in new locations in future. Client has agreed with the approach of cloning the APPS schema four times and then create/replace synonyms with DBlinks which points to four different locations.
This is similar to creating a responsibility using APPS_READ_ONLY schema. The only difference is creating a read/write APPS schema instead of ReadOnly.
    • Database
    •     Create a Database Link in iStore instance pointing to the US Oracle Apps instance
    •     Create a Custom schema XXAPPS (contains synonyms + code objects), which is a clone of APPS schema
    •     Provide Grants on objects in APPS schema for XXAPPS schema
    •     Recursively re-compile the invalid code objects in XXAPPS schema
    •     Create/Replace the synonyms in XXAPPS using the DBLink created for US instance, only for the products/modules used by iStore functionality
    •     Investigate and fix the invalid objects
o          e.g errors due to accessing the remote objects, pl/sql feature constraints like FORALL cannot be used on the remote table, etc.,
    •     The standard Oracle objects which are modified due to the above are placed in the custom top XXIBE_TOP/patch/115/sql
    • Oracle Applications
    •     Register the new Oracle User XXAPPS
    o          (N) Security -> Oracle -> Register -> Database User Name: XXAPPS
    •     Register the custom application per location/instance
o          (N) Application -> Register -> Application : XXUS iStore Customizations, Shortname: XXIBEUS, Basepath: XXIBE_TOP.
o     Please note that XXIBE_TOP is the common top used for all the custom applications (existing and new)
    •     Register the new Oracle User in the DataGroup
o          (N) Security -> Oracle -> DataGroup -> Standard -> Application: XXUS iStore Customizations, Oracle ID: XXAPPS
    •     Create a custom responsibilitie(s) based on the application 'XXus iStore Customizations'
    o          (N) Security -> Responsibility -> Define
    iStore
Create an iStore User/Dealer/Superuser & approve the user
Assign theto custom responsibilitie(s)  the iStore User/Dealer/Superuser in Oracle Applications
I have an apprehension that there will be issues that needs to considered from maintainence perspective. If you have followed such an approach, what problems would you forsee ? and important things that needs to be considered before implementing such a solution?

  • Oracle Application Performance Tuning

    Hello all,
Please forgive me if I am asking this in the wrong section.
I am a s/w engineer with 2 years of exp. I have been working as a performance tuning resource for Oracle EBS in my company. The work mostly involved SQL tuning and dealing with indexes etc. In this time I took up interest in DBA stuff and I completed my OCA in Oracle 10g. Now my comany is giving me an oppurtunity to move into an Application DBA team and I am totally confused about it.
Becoming an Apps DBA will mean that the effort I put into the certification in 10g will be of no use. There are other papers for Apps DBA certification. Should I stay put in performance tuning & wait for a Core DBA chance or shall I accept the Apps DBA oppurtunity.
Also, does my exp. in SQL performace tuning hold any value as such with out an exposure to DBA activities?
Kindly guide me in this regards as I am very confused at this juncture.
    Regards,
    Jithin

Hello bigdelboy , Thank you for your reply.
Yes, By oracle Apps DBA I meant Oracle EBS.
Clearing 1Z0-046 is an option. However, my doubt is will clearing both the exams Admin I and Admin II be of any help without having practical expericnce? The EBS DBA work involves support and patching, cloning, and new node setup etc.
Also, is my performance tuning experience going to help me in any way in the journey forward as a DBA/ EBS DBA?
Thank you for your valuable time.
    Regards,
Jithin SarathThe way I read it is this.
People notice you are capable of understanding and performance tuning SQL. And you must have some knowledge of Oracle EBS. And in fact you also have a DBA OCA.
So there is a 98% + chance you can be made into a good Oracle Apps DBA (and core DBA). If I was in their position I'd want you on my team too; this is the way we used to bring on DBA's in the old days before certification and it has a lot of merit still. Okay you can only do limited tasks at first ... but the number of taks you can do will increase dramatically over a number of months.
I would imagine the Oracle Apps DBA will be delighted to have someone on board who can performance tune SQL which sometimes can sometimes seem more like an art than a science. The patching etc can be taught in small doses. If they are a good team they wont try to give you everything at once, they'll get you to learn one procedure at a time.
And remember, if in doubt ask; and if you dont understand ask again. And be safe rather than sorry on actions that could be critial.
If your worried about liinux: Linux Recipes For Oracle Dbas (Apress) might be a good book to read but could be expensive in India
Likewise: (Oracle Applications Dba Field Guide) may suit and even (Rman Recipes For Oracle Database 11 G: A Problem-solution Approach) may have some value if you need to get up to speed quickly in those areas.
These are not perfect but they sometimes consolidate the information neatly; however only buy if you feel they are cheap enough. You may well buy them and feel disappointed (These all happen to be by Apress who seem to have produced a number of good books ... they've also published some rubbish as well)
And go over the 2-day dba examples as well and linux install examples n OTN as well ... they are free compared to the books I mentioned.
