Clonning Using RMAN
I am trying to clone 10g database from one windows machine to another windows machine. I am using RMAN for this purpose.
I have carried out following steps in order to do so ..
On machine - 1
1. Done alter system switch logfile thrice;
2. Shutdown Immediate
3. Startup mount
4. Then took full database backup using RMAN with controlfile autobackup on
5. On machine two I coped backup pieces to same location as that of machine 1
On machibe-2
1. Started database in nomount stage.
2. rman target /
3. restored controlfile from autobackup
4. alter database mount;
5. run{ restore database
Recover database;}
At the end of step 5 on machine-2 I am getting following error
Starting recover at 12-OCT-07
using channel ORA_DISK_1
starting media recovery
unable to find archive log
archive log thread=1 sequence=7

I don't understand why RMAN is asking for online redo log when I have taken RMAN backup with database mounted.
Cant we take true cold backup using RMAN.. (true in the sense it should not ask for any recovery at the time of restoration)

Ebs r12 cloning using rman online backup
dear all,
how are you guys? i have ebs r12 on multi node and i want to clone db tier and apps tier using rman online backup,can anybody provide me the detail steps of cloning ebs(db tier and appstier ) using rman online backup and directory structure on source and target database is also different.your help highly appreciated thanks in advance.
regards.Hi,
You cannot use RMAN to clone the Apps tier of the EBS and you may use RMAN only on the DB tier. For a complete backup, as mentioned by Hemant K Chitale, you will have to use the rapid clone utility.
To perform a rapid clone using RMAN there are plenty of step by step instructions in google which may guide in addition to support.oracle.com, Let me google that for you
Thanks &

Cloning using rman backups?
Is it possible to clone using RMAN backups?
How do we do it . Please tell me the steps of configuring.Hi,
Let's take the example to create the auxiliary (clone) database using the rman backup in same server.
1)Building the auxiliary database directory structure
a) datafile, control file, redo file location
b) pfile,bdump,cdump,udump
2) Create the pfile from spfile (if required) and use it for auxiliary database with appropriate modification
3) Make all the necessary changes to your aux1 init.ora file
control_files=….
background_dump_dest=….
user_dump_dest=…
log_archive_dest_1=….
db_name=‘aux1’
instance_name=‘aux1’
remote_login_passwordfile=exclusive
4) Start aux1 instance in nomount mode
ORACLE_SID=aux1
export ORACLE_SID=aux1
sqlplus /nolog
sql>connect / as sysdba
sql> startup nomount pfile=/test/initaux1.ora
5)Configure the listener and tnsname.ora file for auxiliary database. Restart the listener.
lsnrctl>stop
lsnrctl>start
listener.ora entry
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(GLOBAL_DBNAME = AUX1)
(ORACLE_HOME=/ORAHOME1/)
(SID_NAME = AUX1)

AUX1 =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = xxx) (PORT = 1521)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = AUX1)
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
6) Connect to the target and auxiliary instance and run the duplicate command
Rman>connect target /
Rman>connect auxilary sys/password@aux1
RMAN> connect target sys@prod
target database Password:
connected to target database: aaaa (DBID=4199802962)
RMAN> connect auxiliary sys@aux1
auxiliary database Password:
connected to auxiliary database: aux1 (not mounted)
RMAN> run

How to refresh the database from target to clone system using RMAN ?
I created the database using RMAN from target (Node A) to clone (Node B)
I want to refresh the data what are all the changes happened in (Not complete database only chages) target to clone system using RMAN ? or any other way?I want to refresh the data what are all the changes
happened in (Not complete database only chages)
target to clone system using RMAN ? or any other way?Incremental changes can't apply, once database is open using RMAN or any other B&R method.STREAMS can be use to capture and apply changes.

I know you, that was impossible that you said this or asked such a question, but my heart missed a beat. I've had to open the discussion or "preview" your response to be sure about what you said.
We all have to take care about what we are quoting here.

Clonning from RAW file system to Coocked using RMAN ..Possible ?
One of our customer wants(For a project) to migrate their 9.2.0 database from one machine to another using a physical standby. Their current production machine uses RAW files for the Oracle datafiles. On the new machine (what will originally be the physical standby) they want to use filesystems (eg cooked files).
The process (very basically) will be :
1. backup production
2. restore production to new server
3. establish physical standby
4. switchover/failover to standby
5. Former standby is now production
The question is, assuming that the backups are being taken with RMAN, is it possible to restore the datafiles to cooked filesystems (given the original backups were taken from raw)? Are there any additional steps or gotchas we have to watch out for when doing this? Do you have any documentation which details how to clone a database in this way?

As far as I know , no additional steps are needed ( except common step to define new loaction).

Can anyone shed some light on the cause of this error? Thanks
JacksonI found the reason. it was because of the the backup set not available.
But after I prepare the backup set at hte primary host, rman still gave err msg:

Duplicate Oracle Database 8.1.7.0 using RMAN
An old database needs to be duplicated... :(
We have an old database named TAPES running on Windows 2003 (32bit) and Oracle 8.1.7.0
The team wants to duplicate / clone this database to another location. We have setup another server, with Windows 2003 and installed Oracle Software 8.1.7.0 with
starter database. The two machines A and B has no network connection (they are on different sites). Also the structure of the machines are different (the location of the database files are different)
How can I duplicate this using RMAN. We cannot afford any downtime on TAPES prod. The idea is:
-backup TAPES prod using RMAN (hot backup)
-copy and tranport the backup files to the remote machine B
-restore (and recover) the RMAN backup to Machine B
-the duplicate database has the same name
In oracle 9i, 10g and 11g, this is easy...and i must admit...i dont know how to do it in Oracle 8.1.7.0...
I need help... :(
thanks a lot!thanks...i saw one article with this approach..but the document did not present the detailed process...do you have one? i am still searching for a good procedure to follow...since it is an old database and focusing/studying old versions like this is a pain in the a**... :(

R12 clone with RMAN auxiliary db.
Hi all,
We require daily clone for our setup due to testing and other reason. Can we replace only database via RMAN Clone?
R12 clone with RMAN Auxiliary DB. Find below steps, if I am wrong correct me.
1. run autoconfig on apps tier.
2. perl <AD_TOP>/bin/admkappsutil.pl and Synchronize appsutil on db tier.
3. Run autoconfig on dbtier or adconfig.sh <contextfile>) (which is correct? i am using autoconfig not with contextfile)
4. adpreclone.pl dbTier
5. adpreclone.pl appsTier
6. copy source to target including db and apps tiers.
7. perl adcfgclone.pl dbTechStack .
8. create duplicate db (auxiliary db) from rman backup.
9. sqlplus "/ as sysdba" @adupdlib.sql so
10. perl adcfgclone.pl dbconfig <CONTEXT_NAME.xml> (This gives error, I am skipping this step. I have tried with perl adcfgclone.pl database but then also its give error. )
11. exec FND_CONC_CLONE.SETUP_CLEAN;
12. perl adcfgclone.pl dbTier (if we run perl adcfgclone.pl dbTechStack ,Is this step require?)
13. perl adcfgclone.pl appsTier
please correct my steps.
thanks in advance,
sandeepHi,
3. Run autoconfig on dbtier or adconfig.sh <contextfile>) (which is correct? i am using autoconfig not with contextfile)Run $ORACLE_HOME/appsutil/bin/adconfig.sh contextfile=$CONTEXT_FILE appspass=apps -- See (Note: 603104.1 - Troubleshooting RapidClone issues with Oracle Applications R12) for details.
10. perl adcfgclone.pl dbconfig <CONTEXT_NAME.xml> (This gives error, I am skipping this step. I have tried with perl adcfgclone.pl database but then also its give error. )What is the error?
12. perl adcfgclone.pl dbTier (if we run perl adcfgclone.pl dbTechStack ,Is this step require?)After running "perl adcfgclone.pl dbTechStack", you need to run "perl adcfgclone.pl dbconfig <Database target context file> -- See (Note: 406982.1 - Cloning Oracle Applications Release 12 with Rapid Clone) and (Note: 799735.1 - Rapid Clone Documentation Resources, Release 11i and 12) for details.

Cloning using RMAN on two different OS
DB version:10gR2
Can i clone DB running on AIX 5.3 using RMAN and recreate it in a Solaris (5.9) machine?I hope it is possible using transportable database concept for cross platfomr migrations.
It is simple and fastest procedure.

Backup procedure using RMAN for 11i Instance
Hi,
we have 11.5.10.2 instance
Node 1 = Application Tier ( 11.5.10.2)
Node 2 = DB Tier ( 9.2.0.7)
as of now, we are taking daily cold backup of both instances.
we want to implement RMAN online backup for DB and take cold backup every week end only.
so, what are the best procedures for implementing RMAN for 11i Database.
Please share your experience, if you have anybody implemented?
which one you prefer in RMAN backup ( backupsets or copy option or backupsets with compressed option) interms of performance.. our db size is 60 GB only.
we apply apps tier patches very rarely . so we want to take RMAN online backup for DB daily and take cold backup for entire apps and db in the week ends.Hi,
This time, i am going to implement for Oracle 11i Database. thats why, i need you guys advice regarding 11i Database.Well, the same is applicable to 11i/R12 databases. You just need to configure RMAN the same way you configure it on any standalone database.
If you have implemented any where RMAN, can you share, how you are taking RMAN backup? I can share the scripts we use for backup using RMAN. If you are interested, let me know and I shall send it by email.
if we want to clone, are you cloning the TEST instance with RMAN backup or using cold backup.We use both, depends on the time frame of the cloning task and whether it is possible to use cold backup for cloning or not.
Please have a look at the following notes, it should be helpful.
