Clonning using RMAN Cold Backup?

Hi,
I have a COLD RMAN backup in prod server and now i want to clone test db using this backup through RMAN. I have 2 question regarding this
1) Where do i need to place the prod RMAN COLD backup files in test server?
2) If i ran below command how RMAN will know where did i placed the backup in test server?
In Test Server
RMAN> duplicate target database to test;DB Version is : 10.2.0.4

RAC to RAC CLONE FROM RMAN Cold Backup

Hi All,
I need your kind assistance in Cloning my Oracle RAC 11.2.0.2 Environment to remote host. Following is Disk layout
DGVOT (ASM Disk group holding OCR and Voting Disk)
DGDATA (ASM Disk Group Holding Data FIles)
DGFRA (ASM Disk Group Holding Fast Recovery FIles)
Remote Host is on different location so cannot use RMAN duplicate with auxiliary channel.
Have luxury of downtime so I want to take RMAN Consistent( Cold Backup)
SAME Disk layout is available to remote hosts.
11.2.0.2 CLusterware (GI) Plus the oracle binaries are already installed.
Can any body tell me the steps to
1) How to take cold backup to disk so that I can tar and copy to remote host
2) clone the database on remote host
3) How i will add the database listener and other resources of this databasee to clusterware.
actually this is my first RAC clone so i am not much aware of detail steps.
I have gone though many metalink notes but no one is matching with my requirements. your expert advice will help me a lot

Use Rman for cold backupIn mount stage execute
RMAN>backup database plus archivelog format '<disk_path>/dbp%U';
RMAN> backup current controlfile format '<disk_path>/ctl%U';
Copy thse backup sets to remote host
2) clone the database on remote host
Create Similar ASM Disk groups as on source
create pfile/spifile, startup instance in nomount mode
catalog backup set
RMAN> catalog start with '<backup_set location>';
Restore controlfile
RMAN>restore controlfile;
RMAN> restore database;
RMAN> recover database;
On successfull recovery
RMAN>sql 'alter database open';

It oracle 10g database version 10.2.0.4
I took the cold backup of the database using rman ( Database name TEST)
1.RMAN> startup mount;
2.RMAN> backup database include current controlfile;
3.RMAN> alter database open;
I aim to create the new database called DEMO using this backup
Please let know the setps for creating new database

or after cold backup, go to mount ,
create trace file of controlfile becuase you are chaning database name
recreate the controlfile
open database in resetlogs;

Clonning Using RMAN

I am trying to clone 10g database from one windows machine to another windows machine. I am using RMAN for this purpose.
I have carried out following steps in order to do so ..
On machine - 1
1. Done alter system switch logfile thrice;
2. Shutdown Immediate
3. Startup mount
4. Then took full database backup using RMAN with controlfile autobackup on
5. On machine two I coped backup pieces to same location as that of machine 1
On machibe-2
1. Started database in nomount stage.
2. rman target /
3. restored controlfile from autobackup
4. alter database mount;
5. run{ restore database
Recover database;}
At the end of step 5 on machine-2 I am getting following error

Cant we take true cold backup using RMAN.. (true in the sense it should not ask for any recovery at the time of restoration)

Hi,
You cannot use RMAN to clone the Apps tier of the EBS and you may use RMAN only on the DB tier. For a complete backup, as mentioned by Hemant K Chitale, you will have to use the rapid clone utility.
To perform a rapid clone using RMAN there are plenty of step by step instructions in google which may guide in addition to support.oracle.com, Let me google that for you

1,I am not confused about user manged cold backup.I took the backup (spfile,control file,redo file,datafile,password file.)Is it right one?
2,In rman cold backup in no catalog mod, we used backup sets for backup,control file is autobackup is enabled.
The backup set format is not OS format.The backup stored at flash recovery area.
Just assume,

Yes you can identify format manually for spfile. ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE ... this statement use to getting script for recreating controlfile again.So this is not backup and you can notuse for restoring controlfile.If you do not have a backup of controlfile and all datafilesd available then you can use this statement.

RMAN Cold Backup FINAL

We are upgrading our production database in 2 weeks. We will be using datapump to export the source and then import to the new target database. As a final backup before the source export I want an RMAN cold backup to get a consistent point-in-time backup. The database is in archivelog mode. After shutting down and using RMAN to perform the cold backup, I will have to open the database to do the export. So how would RMAN restore the production source database back to the time the database was down if additional archive logs are generated during the export? Would I have to specify a time or SCN or would I have SCN gap issues in the recovery of the source database? This is for the source database that will no longer be used once the import to the target and subsequent ERP upgrades are applied. However, I need to preserve the source for a month or so. I could also continue to take hot RMAN backups after the export is completed, but I need the point-in-time recovery to the exact time of the export. I currently only use online RMAN backups since this is a 24/7 database, but I have a short window to upgrade to the new production database.

How to I find out if rman backup that was done is Rman Cold backup or Rman

Hi,please help me I have backup set ,that is backupset that have rman data backup and autobackup that have control file,I want to restore this backup but I don't know how the backup was done .please advice me how to check if this was Rman cold backup or rman hot backup.I have pfile that is extracted from database before backup was taken.

Hi Thanks for the update,I checked the v$backup_set on the other database ,but it does not tell me whether ithe backup was Rman cold backup in which database was mounted or Rman hot backup ,now I have to do the restore but I don't know what type of backup do I have please assist.

RMAN Cold backup script

DB version :10.2.0.4
Do you find anything wrong in the below mentioned RMAN cold backup script? Any enhancements, corrections required?

Since you are doing a SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE and STARTUP MOUNT before the BACKUP, there will be no ArchiveLogs generated while the backup is running --- as the database is not OPEN.
However, the PLUS ARCHIVELOG can include ArchiveLogs that had been generated from the previous STARTUP or ALTER DATABASE OPEN.
(In that case, I would suggest an SQL 'ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT' before the SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE).
Is your database running in ARCHIVELOG mode ? If not, then this discussion is moot.
If yes, the next question is, obviously : Why not take a Hot Backup while the database is running (in which case you MUST backup archivelogs !)

RMAN cold backup taking more time than usual

Hi everybody.. please help me resolving below issue..
I have configured the RMAN in one of the production database with separate catalogue database six months earlier. I have sceduled weekly cold backup through RMAN on sunday 6pm. Normally it used to take one hour to complete the cold backup and database goes down soon as the job starts.
But since from then every week the time taken to just initiate the database shutdown continuosly increasing and recently when i checked it is taking 1 hour to initiate the database shutdown. Once the initiation starts it hardly take 1 to 3 min to shutdown.
Database is up and running during that one Hour. I was in the assumption that RMAN takes some time to execute its internal packages.

Thank you very much for your valuable inputs.
Yesterday there was cold backup and i have monitored the CPU usage. But there was no load on the CPU at that time and CPU usage was 0%
I have tried connecting to RMAN manually and it connects within a second. And also noticed in prstat -a that rman connects as soon as the job starts.
So i think that its taking time at the deleting obsolete backups.
But I have observerd following observation.
Before executing the delete obsolete command as mentioned before
RMAN> REPORT OBSOLETE RECOVERY WINDOW OF 35 DAYS DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE';

Rman cold backup for oracle rac

Hi experts;
I want to create a cold backup for an oracle 10g rac DB.
It has 2 nodes, it's not in archive log, this will be the next step.
But now, I want to backup before to proceed.
My doubts are:
I need to shutdown the both nodes?
If yes:
I need to startup nomount just in one node?
If there any document with this specifics steps?

Cold backups are done with the DB completely shut down.
For RAC the data files are used by all nodes in the cluster.
You need to shut down all instances in the RAC.
Then use your OS utilities or RMAN to do the backup.

RMAN cold backup vs hot

To apply a patch it taking around 3 hours including backing up database.
My question is why should i take cold backup, why not hot backup that can be taken online by placing tablespace into backup mode. Then we can reduce the downtime of backup.

If you are talking about Oracle Database patch set/interim patch/CPU patch, you don't need to do a cold backup of the database: if you are doing a hot backup with archived redo logs backups, you can restore database to a point in time just before applying patch (incomplete recovery). Of course, this hot backup must be run before patch installation and not during patch installation.
Note that :
- you must also backup ORACLE_HOME installation directories to be able to restore ORACLE_HOME in this case
- you must also backup Oracle Inventory
- if you using RMAN, you don't need to put tablespace in backup mode when doing a hot backup.

Using rman to backup a remote database

I am after a good guide or advice on how (what) to install and (how to) run Oracle RMAN
to backup a remote Oracle database.
RMAN must be installed and run on a Solaris (SunOS 5.8) box remote from the Solaris
box (also SunOS 5.8) running the Oracle database but connected to it via a TCP/IP
network.
The Oracle Recovery Manager and Database version is 9.2.0.1.0.
RMAN must perform the backup of the remote database over the network and store
the backup on a disk local to the RMAN box.
The backups may be full or incremental and may be "hot" backups taken while the
Oracle database is open.
The disk files are to be then backed up to tape using Veritas.
What software do I need to install on the RMAN box ?

writes to a NFS-mounted diskRman is writing to disk or tape (when is bundled (libraries needed) with some backup software for tapes such as Veritas). The disk device could be local, or mounted disk form other host or storage (over NFS as Werner mentioned, SMB and others).

Restoring and Recovering from RMAN cold backup

DB Version: 11gR2
os : Solaris
Before dropping a DB we had taken an RMAN backup of the DB using
RMAN> backup database;We hadn't set a FORMAT (like db_%d_S_%s_P_%p_T_%t) for this DB , so the backups went to ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory. The 2 backup files are

Since We hadn't set a FORMAT parameter for the original DB which we have dropped what format i will give during restore?
Will RMAN automatically recognize the FORMAT of the backup piece and restore ?

Hi,
Before dropping a DB we had taken an RMAN backup.I hope you were in mount mode.
Will RMAN automatically recognize the FORMAT of the backup piece and restore ?No it won't.
First you have to restore a controlfile in nomount mode with:
restore controlfile from '/u04/backup/rmanbkp /02mo9fnc_1_1';
and do alter database mount.
Than you have to run "catalog start with '/u04/backup/rmanbkp'; " so the instance now knows where to find the pieces.
Now you can run a restore database command.
Than open the database with resetlogs.
