[CLOSED] sound over hdmi and optical

Ok I know sound of hdmi is a pain for everyone but I've have been all over the wiki and Google and have yet to get mine working! The weird thing is... sound works in XBMC. I got movies with 5.1 sound and 2.0 sound to work as well as music and everything else (except sound effects on menu selections but i can live with them) by setting the audio device to Optical/Coax, speaker config to 5.1, enabling DD AC3 capable and setting both audio ouput device and passthrough output device both to hdmi. However it ONLY works in XBMC. I'm trying to get some emulators working and it doesn't work in them. it doesn't work in an lxde environment either or when I run:
speaker-test -c 6
If I can just get sound working over hdmi I would be happy, If I can get it to work over hdmi and the optical out both that would be even better (although I have a feeling that'll just make things harder).
Here's my soundcards listed  with "cat /proc/asound/modules"
1 snd_hda_intel
2 snd_hda_intel
Here is my aplay -L ouput:

I can get "speaker-test -D surround51:SB -c 6" to work but it's analog through 3 different 3.5mm jacks which apart from not being ideal, can't be hooked up to my surround sound system if I wanted it to.
Whenever I run "speaker-test -D iec958:SB -c 6" or "speaker-test -D hdmi:Generic -c 6" I get:
speaker-test 1.0.25
Playback device is iec958:SB
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Channels count (6) not available for playbacks: Invalid argument
Setting of hwparams failed: Invalid argument
(obviously for the hdmi the playback device line reads hdmi:generic but otherwise they're the same)
I've been all over the alsa page of the wiki. When I tried the settings under https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … DIF_Output they were already correct.
To anyone who's bothered to read all this ( I sorry it's so long I'm just trying to be thorough) Thank you!
If anyone has any clue what I can try to fix this I would be forever grateful.
Edit: Well it looks like all that messing around I did last night trying to fix things only made it worse. Now the sound in XBMC doesn't work either.

Hi!
I spent the day asking friend google, browsing the arch wiki, ubuntu wiki and xbmc wiki.
Lastly, I made it work. I have to admit that I don't know why and don't actually understand a thing of what I did, it was trial and error. However, here is what I did:
installed alsa-oss (probably irrelevant)
set the audio output settings in xbmc to "Audio output"="Optical/Coax", "Audio output device"="Defaults" and "Passthrough output device"="hdmi".
used the following as my .asoundrc
pcm.dmixer {
type dmix
slave {
pcm "hw:0,3"
rate 44100
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
That's it. In case you are a sound guru willing to share your wisdom or else trying to make it work like I did, you might want some more info. Here you go.

  • Sound over HDMI works, but laptop sound isn't working after...

    Hey,
First, sound over HDMI was not working on my laptop, but when I followed this section of Alsa Wiki it worked.
So I created the ~/.asoundrc file containing:
    pcm.!default {
          type hw
          card 0
          device 3
But now, when I unplug my HDMI cable, and want to listen to music using my laptop built-in speakers/jack speakers, it doesn't work anymore, even if I restart Alsa.
In fact, I need to delete the .asoundrc file AND restart Alsa in order to get it work.
Is there a way to make both sound over HDMI, and built-in speakers works automatically depending on if my laptop is/is not connected to my TV ?
    Thanks

You need to restore the card and/or device number to those for your laptop speakers, as determined by:
    aplay -l
To do this automatically, you will need to use scripts called by udev, as described a little further down.

  • Qosmio G50 No sound over HDMI

*Qosmio G50 No sound over HDMI*
    Hi all,
Hopefully anyone recognises the following and would be so kind to help me. I have searched the forum and tried severall of the offered solutions mainly applicable to Vista, but still.
I hooked up my Qosmio G50 to my Philips LCD by HDMI cable. Picture is ok but there is no sound. I tested the cable with a Toshiba Satelite Pro L550 and it works allright. Picture and Sound are working. But that laptop has Intel HDMI audio.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I upgraded by Toshiba update DVD from Vista 64 bit. Sadly I do not know for sure if HDMI audio did work before that. I think so because I did use the laptop for watching a movie on a Panasonic plasma. But I can not remember if that was before or after the upgrade.
Realtek HD Audio device is installed driver version 6.0.1.5923
Realtek HDMI Output is selected als default playback device.
Testing gives me graphical response ( the indicator flashes ) but no audible sound from my tv.
Choosing the other audio device Realtek Digital output changes nothing and I do not believe that this would work anyway.
I have tried removing the device and reinstalling the original drivers. I have tried REaltek drivers from their website.
I have tried changing the view to HDMI only but that does nog change anything either.
One thing that worries me is that under Sound / Realtek HDMI Output / properties / Supported Formats there are no formats present. The Satelite gives me DTS audio and some other. So I am wondering if there should be formats present and if so how can I change this / add any.
Please forgive me if there are errors in the text. I am translating this from a dutch language version of Windows 7.
Please help me. Any suggestions are welcome!

Jeka-?? & PinkPanther thanks for your replies!
The solution for the G30 you mention is not the one for me I am sorry to say. I have tried that one allready. Windows automatically switches on the HDMI audio out when I connect an HDMI cable. Connecting the cable before switching on the TV and laptop is a good thing to try because it eliminates possible problems with the connection. The connection in my case is ok.
At some point I concluded that there must be a softwareproblem of some sort.
I have found the solution over night. Could not sleep anyway. I did not know that the videodrivers are also handling HDMI audio out but in a way it makes sense. I have completely deinstalled the NVIDIA video drivers. After downloading the latest drivers and installing them everything works absolutely fine!

  • How does apple tv2 switch between hdmi and optical

I have the ability to connect my Apple TV2 to my avr using both HDMI and optical......is there any benfit using the optical for lossless music as opposed to HDMI and if so how can I get apple tv2 to differentiate....or does it use HDMI as default if connected?

AFAIK, sound is sent simultaneously via HDMI and optical. mute the sound on your TV as necessary.

  • Use sound output hdmi and bluetooth at the same time?

    Hi
Im using a Mac mini and its connected to my magnifier and then to my TV.
I just bought a new speaker that I placed in my kitchen. I would like to play the same music in the livingroom and in the kitchen at the same time, is it possible?
My speaker got bluetooth and AUX.
I tried using midi but it doesn't work, is it because of the hdmi?

    Brian
Regarding the HDMI and Optical, yes they are both active, I have HDMI to TV and OA to soundbar, both work simultaneously and stand alone too.

  • HDMI and Optical Out

After the update I can not output audio to hdmi and optical audio at the same time. Anyone having the same issue? Did apple remove this functionality?

You and  several thousand other people are having the same issue. Try leaving a Apple  a bug report through their feedback link.

  • Running HDMI and Optical  to Denon Receiver for separate zones

I have the AppleTV (generation 2 I think) that I had setup in the following manner:
HDMI direct to Denon receiver for main room (both video and audio) - Zone 1
Optical audio to "Optical to RCA" converter then RCA cable to Denon for audio to patio - Zone 2
This allowed me to AirPlay music from my iPad to the AppleTV and output that audio to both zones at the same time. The added convenience was to carry my iPad around (in or out) to change music as needed. I hadn't used the patio speakers in a while but now notice it won't output to the patio (zone 2) speakers. I have double checked cabling, confirmed speakers work outside by changing to the radio tuner, etc. I have power to the Optical to RCA converter with a red light On. So my guesses are:
    1) something has changed on the AppleTV not allowing output to both HDMI and Optical (new update make changes?)
    2) possibly the converter isn't working although it is showing power and I have done nothing with that box since setting this up a couple of years ago
When I look into audio settings I see "auto" and 16bit for output, Dolby Digital auto, on, or off, but nothing that specifically calls out optical.
    Any ideas?

Well,  chalk one up for Alley_Cat. I went back to the drawing board and started playing around with various settings to see what I could find out. After playing around with the various listening modes, I noticed I could not get the receiver to play in "Stereo" mode in Zone 1 at all - everything coming from the center channel. Did some research and found I needed to push a button on the remote D/ST (Direct/Stereo..I think) and that fixed my Zone 1 issue. Thinking that would solve the Zone 2 issue, I checked those speakers and still nothing. After playing with it some more, I took one last look at the back of the receiver and noticed in my frustration earlier I put the RCA plugs in the "out" jacks and not the "in". Switched those and lo and behold worked again.
To be clear, the mis-aligned RCA jacks was not the original problem, and I cant say for sure it was the D/ST button because I tried a number of things before switching the jack locations...but it is fixed for now. Fingers crossed it will stay that way! Thanks.

  • Simultaneous audio over HDMI and line out optical

Anyone know if this is possible on the new mini?
I currently use an AppleTV with HDMI to TV and optical digital to my older surround processor which does not accept HDMI.
AppleTV is useful in that it outputs audio simultaneously over all audio connections - I suspect new Mac Mini might only allow single audio output at a time.

...I assume by saying this you're implying you can deliver video over HDMI but audio over toslink through the line out i.e. audio out to non-HDMI destinations is not automatically disabled by an active HDMI connection...
Correct. You choose your audio output in the sound control panel (or Option-click on the sound icon in toolbar).
    That's ideal then really.
...- that would then allow HDMI video to TV, toslink to AV processor, and analogue audio from AV processor to TV analogue audio in to use when you only need the audio via TV speakers...
I doubt the TV will take an analog audio in at the same time as HDMI video in. It likely only accepts analog audio on inputs that are also analog for video (component, s-video, composite).
You're right, unlilely to be configurable for HDMI, there might be the odd set that allowed something like this but in general most wouldn't.
...A small utility/script might be feasible to toggle between the two on the Mini...
    Yes, entirely possible.
Another option would be to do what I do: Disable the TV speakers and use the receiver for all sound. Since TV speakers suck, this is a great option. I haven't used built-in TV speakers for at least 15 years.
I generally do that too, just sometimes for late night listening when others are in bed I switch to the TV speakers, but actually it'd be far easier with no TV audio as you'd not run into those instances when both TV and hi-fi are outputting and messing up the audio effect entirely.

  • NVIDIA display over HDMI and ATI sound over HDMI using one mainboard

    Hello everyone,
I was curious to know if it is possible to use a setup where I use an NVIDIA card to send display over HDMI to my receiver and at the same time I use an internal ATI chip to send audio over HDMI to the same receiver.
In my setup it is a GA-MA78GM-S2H mainboard with a built in ATI HD3200 IGP and an NVIDIA 9500GT GPU and I'll be using XBMC as media centre.
The problem is there is no hardware acceleration support for the display of full-hd (1080p 24) for the ATI chip, whereas NVIDIA using  VDPAU is.
On the other hand the 9500GT doen not support audio over HDMI (unlike the newer models like GT210 or GT220), I can connect SPDIF to the NVIDIA card to allow some sort of audio over HDMI, but in that case I'll still have the bandwidth limitation associated with SPDIF.
I tried to set up a box with both NVIDIA and catalyst drivers to use the above functions, but when I try to install catalyst drivers I get a hardware conflict notice that NVIDIA and Catalyst drivers cannot be installed at the same time on the same system.
AFAIK I need the catalyst drivers (or hd-radeon) in order for also to recognize the device (?)
Anyone any information if installing both drivers is required and possible? Or are there any other methods to achieve such set up?
    TIA,

  • Separate audio sources for HDMI and optical?

    Hi there,
I'm setting up an Apple TV 2nd gen for my parents. I want to set it up in the following way:
How do I set it up so that when they're watching Netflix (or whatever), audio comes through HDMI, but when they're using airplay wirelessly with the iPad, audio comes through the optical cable? Currently, it's an all or nothing kind of thing... without the optical cable plugged in, EVERYTHING plays through HDMI. But when we plug in the optical cable, EVERYTHING plays through optical.
The way their A/V receiver is set up is that the HDMI port is on zone 1, where the speakers are in the bedroom, and optical is set up for zone 2, which goes to the speakers on the back porch, so obviously they don't want audio going out there when they're watching videos.

No, just that the sales guy at the Apple Store said this could be done. Ah well, pretty much par for the course for Apple products. They work how most people want them to work (or more specifically, how Steve wanted them to work), but the minute you need to do something that's slightly out of the ordinary, you're pretty much out of luck, because they give end users so little control over anything.

  • No sound over hdmi, ION2 system

    Hi there
I'm trying to get sound output over hdmi connection without any success. I'm totally out of ideas as I tried it with openelec.tv and a xbmc live system. All the time I never heard anything. I tested with speaker-test and mplayer. I tried stuff from the guide here: http://breden.org.uk/2010/09/30/shuttle … ta-2-live/, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=157347 and also from xbmc wiki:
-different settings of asound.conf (however afaik this does not affect speaker-test -D plughw:X,Y -cN)
    -options for the snd-hda-intel module
    -unmuting
-different input channels of my receiver
    -different nvidia driver versions

What I noticed is that dmesg does not show any hdmi hotplug event, something like: "HDMI hot plug event: Pin=5 Presence_Detect=1 ELD_Valid=0"
So I thought maybe you arch linux people have some creative ideas what the problem is here?
PS: It can't be the hardware because it works with windows7.

No, does not work either... I need to help to figure out why the hotplugging and detecting of the receiver does not even work.

  • ATV2 Audio Problems on BOTH HDMI and Optical w/Denon

I know that it is a known issue that occasionally the ATV2 stops outputting audio over HDMI. But I'm having this problem over the optical out as well. I have it connected to a Denon 3808CI receiver, and it will work as expected for a couple days, they the audio will just go away and the only way to get it back is to unplug the ATV2, which is annoying.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
Also, those of you with Denon receivers... can you chime in if you're having NO problems? Maybe I have a faulty unit...
    Thanks!

I use a 4308 and never had audio trouble with either atv1 or2.

  • HT1586 Use both HDMI and Optical Port on Apple TV?

Can you use HDMI to port to TV and Optical Digital Audio Port to go to Audio receiver for surround sound?

    Yes.

  • Using HDMI and optical

Can HDMI be connected to TV and optical connected to separate stereo reciever? I want to have music sent to different receiver/speakers than home theater setup

I have a related question: same setup but I want to match the word length (bit depth) of the Atv optical output to the input of my DSP (Meridian 519). I can select the output word length as either 16bits or Auto, but my assumption is that the only feedback the Atv will get for auto is via HDMI, which is connected to the display... a separate device. Yes, I can select 16 on both, but I don't want to unnecessarily down sample the bit rate. OTOH, the display probably says 24bit is just fine.... provided the Atv can deliver that. Unfortunately, there is no auto detect on the Meridian. Just 16-24 in increments of 2.
    So:
Can the Atv (v3) deliver a consistent 24 bit word via the optical output?
IF not, what bit rate can it reliably deliver?
What bit rate is the Sony display (current 4k model) likely to be asking for via HDMI?
    thanks!
