CMD.EXE DIR command returns incorrect files for wildcard

So, I'm at a Windows 7 command prompt.  The current folder has both old and new Excel files in it.  That is, some have a file extension of ".xls", while others are ".xlsx".  I enter the following command:
dir *.xls
This is returning all files in the folder.
Anybody with a knowldege of regular expression language would say that the ".xlsx" files should be excluded, since the "*" is to the left of the ".", and should only apply to the file name, not to the file extension.
If I wanted to return all Excel files, I should have to specify "*.xls*".
Am I missing something here?  Is this not a bug in the Windows 7 cmd.exe?   Seems like a pretty dangerous one, since it could lead to the unwanted deletion of files.
- Mark Z.

This is because 8.3 compatible filenames (aka short filenames)  are created for your files. By default, creation of short names is enabled. Use dir /x to verify.

    Without some care, it seems that that can cause some very unexpected results in batch files if you use wildcards to process files.
    This is correct. You can suppress the generation of 8.3 file names with this command
    fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 1
    or check what the parameters mean like so:
    fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 /?
    The command will affect newly created files only. Existing files will retain their 8.3 names unless you remove them with this command:
    fsutil  8dot3name  strip  FolderName
    Your file retained its unexpected 8.3 name most likely from an early name that started with "ind".

  • Java returning incorrect values for width and height of a Tiff image

    I have some TIFF images (sorry, I cannot post them b/c of there confidential nature) that are returning the incorrect values for the width and height. I am using Image.getWidth(null) and have tried the relevant methods from BufferedImage. When I open the same files in external viewers (Irfanview, MS Office Document Imaging) they look fine and report the "correct" dimensions. When I re-save the files, my code works fine. Obviously, there is something wrong with the files, but why would the Java code fail and not the external viewers? Is there some way I can detect file problems?
    Here is the code, the relevant section is in the print() routine.

    Figured it out. The files have a different vertical and horizontal resolutions. In this case the horizontal resolution is 200 DPI and the vertical is 100 DPI. The imgage width and height values are based on those resolution values. I wrote a section of code to take care of the problem (at least for TIFF 6.0)
       private void setPageSize(int pageNum) throws IOException
          IIOMetadata imageMetadata = _reader.getImageMetadata(pageNum);
          //Get the IFD (Image File Directory) which is the root of all the tags
          //for this image. From here we can get all the tags in the image.
          TIFFDirectory ifd = TIFFDirectory.createFromMetadata(imageMetadata);
          double xPixles = ifd.getTIFFField(256).getAsDouble(0);
          double yPixles = ifd.getTIFFField(257).getAsDouble(0);
          double xRes = ifd.getTIFFField(282).getAsDouble(0);
          double yres = ifd.getTIFFField(283).getAsDouble(0);
          int resUnits = ifd.getTIFFField(296).getAsInt(0);
          double imageWidth = xPixles / xRes;
          double imageHeight = yPixles / yres;
          //if units are in CM convert ot inches
          if (resUnits == 3)
             imageWidth = imageWidth * 0.3937;
             imageHeight = imageHeight * 0.3937;
          //convert to pixles in 72 DPI
          imageWidth = imageWidth * 72;
          imageHeight = imageHeight * 72;
          setImgWidth((int) Math.round(imageWidth));
          setImgHeight((int) Math.round(imageHeight));
          setImgAspectRatio(imageWidth / imageHeight);

  • Creating exe projector linked to flv file for cd rom

    Hi! My Contact
    nha khoa
    I have a large flv video file that I want to create an exe
    projector file (a "click me to start" file for users) that is
    linked to and plays the flv video when you open the exe. These
    files would then be burned to a cd rom.
    Does anyone know how to create the link from the exe
    projector to open the flv file for cd rom distribution.
    thanks!

    Is it possible that you could advise me on the best settings
    to have when playing an FLV back from CD-Rom, I have a similar
    problem in that my FLVs playback ok on high-spec PCs/Macs, but when
    I launch in on an old PC/Mac there are serious staggers in the
    playback and some audio glitches.
    If anyone has any advice on how to combat this I would be
    very grateful.
    THE BASICS
    I am using flash to present 2 FLV files via a CD Rom.
    THE ISSUE
    The FLV files are quite large, 1x 40mb file and 1x 43mb file
    (dimensions 1024x576). Playback on a high end PC with 2GB Ram is
    great, no staggering in the playback. Testing this on a high-end
    Mac too yeilds no performance issues with playback.
    However, when the settings are reduced to a low-end PC/Mac,
    there are glitches in the audio and staggering in the visual
    playback as the lower spec machine tries to cope as best it can
    with the Hi-Res video.
    The flv files are externally loaded into a movie clip that is
    designed for FLV playback using a buffer speed 0.1.
    QUESTION:
    Does anyone have any tips/ advice on the best way to resolve
    the staggered playback, audio glitching.
    The obvious routes ahead of me are;
    Reduce the quality of the FLVs I am playing.
    Reduce the dimensions of each FLV.
    Cut the FLV into smaller pieces and link them together via
    the movie clip loader (NOT sure how to do that though?)
    Does anyone have any advice on my annoying problem?
    Thanks for reading.

  • OracleDataAdapter.Fill returns incorrect data for small numbers.

    Hi All,
    Recently we moved to Oracle client 11.1.0.7.20 with ODP.NET and instant client.
    And we encountered the following issue.
    When FetchSize of the command is set to any value that differs from default for some number fields with size <5 incorrect values are returned.
    I used the following code to reproduce the issue:
    var query = "SELECT * FROM RT ORDER BY ID";
    var connectionString = "Data Source=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=server)(PORT=1531)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=test)));User Id=user;Password=password;";
    var column = "IS_LEAF"; // data type is NUMBER(1, 0)
    using (var connection = new OracleConnection(connectionString))
    using (var cmd1 = connection.CreateCommand())
    using (var cmd2 = connection.CreateCommand())
    cmd1.CommandText = query;
    cmd2.CommandText = query;
    cmd2.FetchSize = 512*1024; // 512K
    var adapter1 = new OracleDataAdapter(cmd1);
    var table1 = new DataTable();
    adapter1.Fill(table1);
    var adapter2 = new OracleDataAdapter(cmd2);
    var table2 = new DataTable();
    adapter2.Fill(table2);
    for (int i = 0; i < table1.Rows.Count; i++)
    var row1 = table1.Rows;
    var row2 = table2.Rows[i];
    if (!object.Equals(row1[column], row2[column]))
    Console.WriteLine(string.Format("values don't match: {0}, {1}", row1[column], row2[column]));
    there are some ouput lines:
    values don't match: 0, 3328
    values don't match: 0, 3
    values don't match: 1, 3
    values don't match: 0, 318
    values don't match: 0, 264
    values don't match: 1, 10280
    values don't match: 1, 842
    values don't match: 1, 7184
    The column type is NUMBER(1, 0) and only values in the database are 1 or 0. So as you can see most of the values filled with custom fetch size are totally incorrect.
    We have several tables with small number fields and for some of them the issue reproduces but for others does not.
    And the issue doesn't appear:
    1. with Oracle client 11.1.0.6.20
    2. if I use data readers and compare values record by record.
    Our Oracle DB version is 10.2.0.4.
    Thanks,
    Maxim.

    For anyone that may find this at a later time, this behavior has now been corrected, and is available in 11107 Patch 31 and newer, available on My Oracle Support. Note that the "self tuning=false" did not work in all cases, so the only reliable solution is to get the patch.

  • CL_ABAP_ELEMDESCR returns incorrect help_id for dobj types

    If runtime type services are used to retrieve the help_id of a dobj type (dbtab-field), the data element type is returned instead of the type dbtab-field. The describe statement provides a work-around since it works correctly, but data objects created from the data descriptor lose the information completely. Also, GET_DDIC_OBJECT seems to return the wrong information in the TABNAME and FIELDNAME fields.
    Can anyone tell me if I am just missing something?
    e.g.
    *Use describe statement to find the help_id.
    data foo like T100-ARBGB.
    data descHelpID type string.
    describe field foo HELP-ID descHelpID.
    *Now we use RTTS to find the help_id.
    data elemDescr type ref to CL_ABAP_ELEMDESCR.
    data rttsHelpID type string.
    data myX031L type standard table of X031L.
    elemDescr ?= CL_ABAP_TYPEDESCR=>DESCRIBE_BY_DATA( foo ).
    rttsHelpID = elemDescr->help_id.
    if elemDescr->IS_DDIC_TYPE( ) = abap_True.
    myX031L = elemDescr->GET_DDIC_OBJECT( ).
    endif.
    write: / `help_id via describe: `, descHelpID.
    write: / `help_id via RTTS: `, rttsHelpID.
    break-point.

    the DESCRIBE statement does not give exactly the help-id, it gives the definition of field in form TABNAME-FIELDNAME
    for class CL_ABAP_ELEMDESCR, I agree to say that HELP-ID attribute is not very useful !
    in fact help-ids can be found in table DD04L for elements and in DD35L for fields of a table - those are the only reliable sources for this piece of information !

    SQL is not changed at all. When run again , it populates correctly.
    any help is highly appreciatied.

  • Stop weblogic services using StartStopServices.xml parameter leaves cmd.exe

    When using the "Start > All Programs > Oracle Business Intelligence > Stop BI services" function it calls the StartStopServices.cmd file. This file then references the StartStopServices.xml file using the following statement;
    <target name="stop_all" depends="set.is.stop.all, opmn.stop, wls.mgd.stop, wls.wait.mgd.shutdown, del.generated.managed.server.credentials, wls.stop, wls.wait.admin.shutdown, del.generated.admin.server.credentials">
         </target>
         <target name="set.is.stop.all">
         <property name="is.stop.all" value="true"/>
         </target
    The problem that I'm having is that when the weblogic services are successfully stopped, 2 cmd.exe windows are left open on the server. I've created a batch file to call the StartStopServices.cmd and added parameters such as
    Sleep.exe 30
    c:\windows\system32\TASKKILL.exe /F /IM cmd.exe /T
    Theoretically this should pause for a few, and then close the open cmd windows. However whenever the StartStopServices.cmd is called it closes the original command window before any statements are executed. So essentially I don't get to the taskkill or sleep parameters. I'm assuming that I need to edit the XML file somewhere to make it so it doesn't stop_all and close, but simply stops all and allows my added entries in the cmd windows to execute so ALL cmd windows are closed.
    I'm scheduling a backup using RMAN in NOARCHIVELOG mode, and need to stop the weblogic processes in order to complete this backup function. However I need to end these cmd windows otherwise over the course of time they will be cascaded everywhere. Has anybody accomplished this?

    Hope still you need a solution for your question.
    Follow these steps to achive as expected file using StartStopServices.xml, do let me know for any questions.
    File loc: MW_HOME\instances\instance3\bifoundation\OracleBIApplication\coreapplication
    1) I've added a new target attribute( as 'veera' to existing code) at the end of the tag
    <target name="stop_all" depends="determine.language, set.is.stop.all,find.or.get.credentials, opmn.stop, wls.mgd.stop, wls.wait.mgd.shutdown, del.generated.managed.server.credentials, wls.stop, wls.wait.admin.shutdown, del.generated.admin.server.credentials, veera">
    </target>
    2) Added new code as show below
    <target name="veera" if="wls.domain.exists" depends="wls.check.exists" description="Stop WLS">
    <echo message="Srini..." />
    <exec spawn="true" executable="cmd.exe" osfamily="windows" dir="${DOMAIN_HOME}/bin">
    <arg value="/c" />
    <arg value="taskkill /f /IM cmd.exe" />

  • Incorrect ClassDoc for nested classes

    Hello,
    I think there is a bug in Javadoc concerning nested classes ClassDoc records extracted through the doclet API.
    In particular, ClassDoc records are correct if the container class is directly specified on the command line as a .java file or part of a package (i.e. the source is available), but they are (at times) wrong if the records are built from .jar (.class) files through the classpath.
    Example with "java.io.ObjectOutputStream" from JDK 1.3.1_01:
    If the ClassDoc for this class comes from RootDoc.specifiedClasses(), its nested classes are correctly listed as:
    private static final class java.io.ObjectOutputStream.HandleTable
    public abstract static class java.io.ObjectOutputStream.PutField
    static final class java.io.ObjectOutputStream.PutFieldImpl
    private static final class java.io.ObjectOutputStream.ReplaceTable
    private static final class java.io.ObjectOutputStream.Stack
    but if the ClassDoc of the container class is extracted from a method parameter, like in org.apache.xerces.dom.ParentNode.writeObject(ObjectOutputStream out), this is the result:
    final synchronized class java.io.ObjectOutputStream$HandleTable
    public abstract static class java.io.ObjectOutputStream.PutField
    static final class java.io.ObjectOutputStream.PutFieldImpl
    final synchronized class java.io.ObjectOutputStream$ReplaceTable
    final synchronized class java.io.ObjectOutputStream$Stack
    According to my tests, at least ClassDoc.modifiers(), ClassDoc.qualifiedName() and ClassDoc.containingClass() return incorrect results for HandleTable, ReplaceTable and Stack.
    This behaviour seems common to both Javadoc 1.3.1_01 and 1.4beta3. I admit I didn't test 1.4 final, but I searched the Javadoc site, the forum and the bug database without finding anything similar.
    Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Windows Could Not parse or process unattend answer file for pass [specialize] after WDT Litetouch 'sysprep and capture'

    I setup an ACER VM6620G (Win7x86) how I wanted, including disabling the administrator account and creating an administrator user "PVA"
    Navigated to \\wds\DeploymentShare$\Scripts and ran the litetouch script. Chose my "Sysprep and Capture" task.
    Everything went off without a hitch until I restarted the technician pc.
    I got the dreaded
    "Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file [C:\windows\Panther\unattend.xml] for pass [specialize]. A component or setting specified in the answer file does not exist"
    I tried to deploy the captured image to the same computer and got the same error
    I've scoured the internet for solutions (Shift+10 opens command prompt. Good to know!) with no luck.
    I've saved the unattend.xml and looked for errors- going as far as to install an x86 Win7 virtual machine to validate the unattend.xml file in WISM
    Other information that might be useful:
       I never used WISM to create an unattend.xml nor did I attach one to the image.
       I didn't try to copy user profiles/settings/migrate etc
       I imported the captured image to WDT. Created a standard task and added 2 nodes
         -Inject Drivers
         -Install Application
    As a side, I've got another image that I've already injected the drivers/installed the application as a test. Everything went smoothly.

  • What return values do the cmd.exe commands return?

    I have only begun to use PowerShell which I find way to complex at this time so for me the cmd.exe batch file does much of what I need, but I tried to find a list of the errorlevels returned by each of the commands but I couldn't find it. I found descriptions
    of the command here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772390(v=ws.10).aspx but they don't give return values.
    In particular I was looking for the return value of the find command. I assumed 0 meant found, and 1 meant not-found, but nothing told me that. It could be that 0 only meant the find did not return an error, irrelevant to the finding something or not, when
    1 might mean find exited prematurely (such as when using find in a protected directory). I since found that 0 means found and 1 means not found, but what if I needed to plan for how to handle exit codes other than those two?
    I'm looking with respect to W7 Pro for return values for all the commands, not just find. I did a search in this forum and "on the net" before I submitted this question, but with more than 108K results just in this forum,
    I found I didn't have the time to look through them all. "On the net" gave me some results for specific commands, but not all of them.
    So, can someone point me to a list of cmd.exe command return codes for W7?

    Hi,
    Some discussion about return value:
    Windows PowerShell Exit Codes
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/powershell/archive/2006/10/14/windows-powershell-exit-codes.aspx
    As you can see, it indeed depends who set it.

  • WINE err:"wine cmd.exe /c echo '%ProgramFiles%' returned empty string"

    So as the tittle states WINE is throiwng this error:
    wine cmd.exe /c echo '%ProgramFiles%' returned empty string
    As for what might have caused it? probably the last system update which was performed a few days ago, my old prefix works fine but I have a habit of creating new prefixes for troublesome applications, or applications I am unsure of whether they will cause trouble or not.
    Hence I created a new prefix using:
    export WINEARCH=win32
    export WINEPREFIX=~/.problematic
    winecfg
    As for how wine is run, it's run as a normal, unprivileged, user.
    Oh and I also tried generating yet another prefix like this:
    $ WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.problematic-new winetricks steam
    Executing w_do_call steam
    wine cmd.exe /c echo '%ProgramFiles%' returned empty string
    Didn't work either.
    I'm at loss, any suggestion on how to fix it?

    Wine cannot find the ncurses library (libncursesw.so.5).
    why is ncurses a dependency anyway? besides, wicd-curses works so this shouldn't be the case.
    Anyway, trying winetricks in the same prefix
    $ WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/testprefix winetricks steam
    Executing w_do_call steam
    wine cmd.exe /c echo '%ProgramFiles%' returned empty string
    Anyway, I expected notepad to work since it resides in %WINDOWS% not %ProgramFiles%
    Is there any registry key I can set for this? all my google searching says this can cause with a mismatch of wine versions but why would that happen?
    Either way checking wine --version outputs wine-1.7.20 which is the same as it was pre-update (when it still worked).

  • Windows 7 Command Prompt Message Errors (cmd.exe)

    Opening a command prompt in Windows 7 and running any command results in error messages such as the ones below (in this case a dir command):
    01/28/2010  09:06 AM    The system cannot find message text for message number 0x2373 in the message file for Application.
                                           Windows
          The system cannot find message text for message number 0x2378 in the message file for Application.
          The system cannot find message text for message number 0x2379 in the message file for Application.
    For other commands it references "System" rather than "Application" in the error message.  I've seen other posts online describing the same behavior linked to the copies of Win7 distributed at the Gartner Symposium in October as part of the general availability announcement (this is where I got my copy).
    Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Explorer has never really been able to accept drag-dropped files from multiple users very well, i.e., dragging a file from a window from a user-opened folder into an admin-opened folder.  It can be done though with a hack.  What I have been able
    to do in the past, as a workaround, is hot-login.  Hot-login is as opposed to warm-login in which is logging off Explorer and logging back in as a different user, or cold-login which is rebooting the system.  It is considered a hack by most Microsoft
    professionals though is useful.
    To hot-login, then, while logged in as a user use the Task Manager to stop the "explorer.exe" process.  This will close all Explorer windows and cause your taskbar and you desktop icons to disappear, but you will still have other applications running,
    such as your Cmd windows.  Note that due to the user's credentials on that machine, you may need to do this using PsKill (part of PsTools, now a Microsoft Product), using the admin Cmd window itself.  After doing that, immediately run explorer.exe
    from the admin Cmd window before Explorer has a chance to rerun itself (usually several seconds, though it might never come back by itself).
    Doing that should now load the taskbar and desktop back, and they may look different if you previously had them customized.  This is because Explorer is now running as admin, as if you had logged into Windows as the admin account.  But, part of
    the OS is also still running as the user, such as the server and workstation services, so you may, perhaps, be able to drag-drop files between users interchangeably, at that point.  In the least, running Explorer as admin has its enough advantages, in
    some roles (like server administration), to be useful in and of itself.
    This all may of course change after enough updates to Windows security.
    Oh -- to access the user-specific desktop icons which are now gone from the actual desktop, find its icons in the respective subfolder in the \Users\ folder on the system drive and use them from there.  It should in a \Desktop\ folder right in the respective
    user folder.  User-specific Quick Launch icons from the taskbar are probably in AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\, from the respective user folder.
    Now again, this is a hack that I'd use as an Active Directory administrator.  It is only needed once per Windows session, usually in conjunction with an AD admin account I had, as logged in and running Cmd via RunAs.  Local administrator accounts
    function the same way with this process.  I don't expect Microsoft to officially endorse this process, so consider it from one power user to the next as the need arises.

    we have got below steps from one of adobe person :
    Steps.
    can you please explaine clearly The above steps  and how can we generate PDF for a FM file without manual intervention .
    the actual requirement is :
    1) Goto installed location of FM and launch framemaker with specified process id.
    eg : $Installdir\FrameMaker.exe /progid:MyProcess
    2) Build the asynchronous client exe\dll with the help from attached sample client.
    3) Goto the location where client exe is copied and then run with specified FM process id.
    eg : asynch_script.exe MyProcess
    To resolve few dependencies, you can also copy the client exe to installed location of FM. So the above step in that case would be
    $Installdir\ asynch_script.exe MyProcess
    Hi All , We are going for upgrade of  Frame maker 8 which is on unix system  to FM 10 or 11. We are using Framemaker mainly for renditions, i.e to convert the fm documents to PDF. To convert fm document to PDF we are using the below mentioned command line utility available in FM 8.(on unix). /opt/app/frame8.0/bin/fmprint -i -p Sample.fm.fmtpl Sample.fm Currently the the fm file which need to converted to PDF and the FM 8(installed) are available on the same unix system ,so we were able to initiate/use the command line utility of FM 8. The rendition of the FM to PDF is On -Demand.( We are not running any batch activities/ bulk renditions).We are rendering the document as soon as the document  is available. As we upgrade the FM to newer versions which would be installed on the Windows machine as Frame maker 10 or 11 will not support unix plat form, so can you please let us know which option is better to use i.e we want to convert fm file to PDF using java program without any manual intevention . we came to know that about FDK and extend scripts but we are very new to those !! could you please any one can provide us ways and provide us sample codes/scripts to convert FM file to PDF !! and please let us know which one is better client / server version to do this .
    please heklp us as it is very important

    I am not clear which platform that you are asking this question for. Here is an answer for Windows.
    The icuuc32.dll is one of several unicode support libraries. These files are usually included in same directory as FrameMaker.exe (e.g. c:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker11).
    If your asynchronous client is located in any other directory than this directory, icuuc32.dll will not be found when your asynchronous client starts. You need to set your Windows environment "Path" variable to include it's location (e.g. c:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker 11). The "Path" will be searched when your asynchronous client starts and these files should then be found.
    with Windows Vista (I think Windows 7 in the same) the "Path" is set in Control Panel | System | Advanced System Settings | Environment Variables. I would suggest adding C:\Program Files\FrameMaker11 to the "Path" in the system variables.
    There will be several files in this directory that your asynchronous client needs to start.
    Hope this helps

  • Checking existence of command in cmd.exe

    I want to run somone from cmd.exe using some procedure, for example WEBUTIL_HOST.HOST ('cmd / c start iexplore' | | url)
    Can I somehow check before executing, that command exists and that it will be execute?

    HOST doesn't return an error when the OS command returns an error. HOST only fails when the HOST call itself fails. So checking form_failure is usually not what you want.
    However, in your case you should try:
    HOST ('cmd / c start ' | | url);
    If you just start an URL, Windows will automatically look for the default browser.I understand, it might seem strange.
    Unfortunately, it is necessary to open a web page only IE. However, the browser by default does not necessarily IE. And the forms should check, the IE installed. Ie Command HOST ('cmd / c iexplore' | | url); executed. Just not sure that IE is installed in the default directory.
    That is a problem... :(
