Code Insight and mixed case PL/SQL identifiers

Let’s assume I hava a package “Test” with a procedure “DoSomeReallyHardWork”.
I would like code insight to complete a call of this procedure and preserve the original case.
I don’t like “test.dosomereallyhardwork” and I strongly dislike “TEST.DOSOMEREALLYHARDWORK".
Is there any way to achive this kind case preservation?
I recompiled my code with PL/Scope turned on, but it seems that all identifiers are stored in uppercase. Bug or feature?

The identifiers are case insensitve, so your code could as easily read
create or replace procedure TestProc is
ThisVarHasNoMeaning varchar2(100);
begin
ThisVarHasNoMeaning := 'Test';
THISVARHASNOMEANING := 'Other';
end TestProc
You only have one identifier, but can have multiple capitalizations. While it would be nice if the declaration was the 'definitive' one, it looks like they've gone the easy route and uppercased them all for consistency.
If you used _ (the This_Var) in your variable names, at least you could use initcap to pretty them up.

  • "completion insight" and "change case as you type" won't work for sql file

    Hi there,
    Just updated to 3.1 on my Mac Lion. It's very likely a bug since it used the work with 3.0.
    I have a "temp.sql" file where I store several queries. I start SQL Developer, open "temp.sql", connect to a DB but "completion insight" and "change case as you type" won't work anymore.
    If I click in "Unshared SQL Worksheet", the new worksheet tab will work fine with completion and change case, but I want to use my temp.sql and save things there when closing the application.
    To reproduce yourself the issue:
    Open SQL Dev, connect to a DB (it will open a worksheet), do some queries and check that change case and completion are working, quit SQL Dev, but save the worksheet in a sql file before. Re-open SQL Dev and open the sql file. Connect to the same DB and try to change the queries or create another. Completion and change case won't work anymore.

    Well, it's partially working, if your sql file is big (like mine), say with more than 1000 lines, then, maybe because of memory usage, the automatic completion won't work as expected, though, sometimes, after a while, crtl-space would stil work.
    So, the problem may have been addressed, but I believe this feature can be definitely improved.

  • Code insight and possible side effects

    Hi,
    I'm using SQL Developer 1.2 on MacOSX 10.4.9 (MacBook Pro) and noticed the following problems:
    In SQL Worksheet, start typing a query and use the shortcut for code insight ie: "SELECT * FROM SCHEMA.EMPL":
    Nothing happens, no completion popup is displayed (first problem)
    Hit backspace to correct the table name : the backspace is disabled (second problem) as other keys (already mentionned in the forum).
    Load presets from preferences: keys are now working again (... except code insight)

  • Code Insight and Fedora Core 2

    Hi,
    Code insight doesn't seem to work on my FC2 system. Does anyone know how to fix it ?
    Leighton

    One or more of the following steps makes it work: ( Our system is Fedora Core 2 / KDE 3.3.0 / Java 1.4.2_04 / kernel 2.6.5 / AMD Duron 1800+ / 512MB RAM + 1GB cache )
    1. upgrade to kernel 2.6.9-rc3 ( not likely to be relevant )
    2. upgrade to Java 1.4.2_05 and configure JDeveloper for this library
    3. make it a system library
    4. turn of IPv6 lookups in KDE ( set env var KDE_NO_IPV6=true )

    Does anybody can help me how I can enable code insight feature of jdeveloper?

  • Code insight is not working correctly in Jdev 10.1.3 (preview) and java 1.5

    The code insight does not work for me. I followed the advice of Steve Muench given here:
    http://radio.weblogs.com/0118231/stories/2003/01/17/whyIsntMyCodeInsightWorking.html
    but that did not change the problem. The problem seems to be related to new java 1.5 features. As soon as I start using generics the code insight is lost...
    Any clues what is going on? I s this easy to fix?
    -- example: (NOTE that iI use double (( )) to indicate generics definitions. the forum software would not let me put in the correct syntax!)
    package mypackage;

    private Set ((Integer)) intSet = null;
    public tester1()

  • Code Insight.... Cloumn Names?

    Hi Guys,
    I was recently using SQL Worksheets and toyed with the code insight, and noticed that if I type in the schema name, code insight kicks in an provide a list of table names in that schema.
    But when I reach the where section of my SQL and the code insight does not provide a list of column names for the table alias. That sucks! :o)
    Am I missing something?
    Example:
    select *
    from xx.(1) xse
    where xse.(2)
    (1) code insight provides list of table names.
    (2) code insight does NOT provide a list of column name for table xse.

    Might be worth posting this one over on the SQL Developer forum - I believe we get this functionality from SQL Developer in future releases of JDeveloper.
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • SQLdeveloper on mac and code insight

    Hi!
    Just downloaded SQL developer 2.1.0.63 and running it on snow leopard. (BTW, for others out there, make sure that you unzip the file with the standard apple utility).
    I cannot get code insight to work for an Oracle or a Teradata DB.
    For Oracle, i type in SELECT * FROM <DB_NAME>. ctr+space and nothing happens. this is in sql worksheet and in newly created files.
    BUT if i just type in SELECT, in a second it gives me select * from table autocompletion.
    as for teradata, i only get autocompletion after select in newly created files, but in sql worksheet - nothing works at all.
    any luck on this?

    when in type in select * from DBNAME.
    this is what i see in the console:
    *...?aux tok2?, parse time = 16

  • BUG: Export DDL and Data fails for mixed case table/column names

    Hi there,
    I have found a bug in SQL Developer. See details below.
    Description:
    When "Export DDL and Data) function is used on a table/columns not named in UPPERCASE, sql generated by SQL Developer is invalid.
    Steps to reproduce:
    - open SQL Developer, connect to DB
    - make a table named "lowerCase" (in double quotes, so it won't be automatically changed to capital letters)
    - you may also add some columns, for example "lowerCol1", "UpCol2", ALLUPCOL3
    - add some data rows to the table
    - choose Tools -> Export DDL and Data
    - check exporting of tables and data, on "filter" tabs choose your "lowerCase" table
    - press "Apply"
    Error:
    Generated SQL contains invalid INSERTs: mixed-case table and columns are referenced without obligatory double quotes, which yields an error when generated script is executed (see below, relevant line is underlined)
    -- DDL for Table lowerCase
    CREATE TABLE "DBO_HT"."lowerCase"
    (     "lowerCol1" VARCHAR2(100),
         "UpCol2" VARCHAR2(100),
         "ALLUPCOL3" VARCHAR2(100)
    -- DATA FOR TABLE lowerCase
    -- FILTER = none used
    -- INSERTING into lowerCase
    Insert into lowerCase (lowerCol1,UpCol2,ALLUPCOL3) values ('lc','uc','auc');
    -- END DATA FOR TABLE lowerCase
    Remarks
    SQL Developer: version 1.2.1, build MAIN-32.13
    Oracle DBs: 9.2 & Express
    OS: Windows 2000 Professional
    If you need any more details/testing, let me know. I'd really appreciate a quick patch for this issue...
    Alternatively, do you know of any other simple way of copying a single database (it's called a schema in Oracle, right?) from one computer to another? Possibly something so simple like detaching->copying->reattaching mdf (data) files in SQL Server... I thought that this "Export DDL&Data" function will do, but as you can see I couldn't use it.
    I just need a simple solution that works - one operation on source to stuff, get the resulting files to other computer and one operation to have it running there... I think that such scenario is very basic, yet I just can't achieve it and I am simply not allowed to spend more time on it (read: our test project fails, my company rejects my "lobbying" and stays with MSSQL :/ )
    Thanks a lot & bye

    Thanks for your reply.

    You're right. I just wanted to give some very short feedback on my experiences with SQL Developer, so I didn't think starting new threads would be necessary, but as I was writing it became much bigger than I initially planned - sorry about that. I will make proper threads as soon as possible. Having "Edit post" button on this forum would also be useful.
    ad. 2)
    Generally, you're right - in most cases it's true that "switching DBMS is a major commitment" and "you will produce terrible code" if you don't learn the new one.
    However, I think that you miss one part of market here - the market that I think Express is also targeted on. I'd call it a "fire&forget databases" market; MySQL comes to mind as possibly most common solution here. It's the rather small systems, possibly web-accessed, whose data-throughput requirements are rather modest; the point is to store data at all, and not necesarily in fastest way, because given the amount of data that is used, even on low-end hardware it will work well enough. What's important here is its general ease of use - how easy is to set up such system, connect and access data, develop a software using it, how much maintenance is needed, how easy this maintenance is, how easy are the most common development tasks as creating a DB, moving a DB from test to production server etc. There, "how easy" directly translates to "how much time we need to set it up", which translates to "how much will the development will cost".
    Considering the current technology, switching the DBMS in such systems is not necesarily a major commitment and believe me that you will not produce terrible code. In many cases it's as simple as changing a switch in your ORM toolkit: hibernate.dialect = Hibernate.Dialect.OracleDialect vs MySQLDialect vs MsSql2005Dialect
    Therefore, in some part of market it's easy to switch DBMS, even on project-by-project basis. The reason to switch will appear when other DBMS makes life easier => development faster. From that point of view, I can understand my colleagues giving me an embarassing look and saying "come on, I won't read all these docs just to have db copied to test server". And it doesn't mean "they are not willing to learn anything new", it's just that they feel such basic task should have self-explaining solution that doesn't require mastering any special knowledge. And if they get such simple solutions somewhere else, it costs them nothing to change the hibernate dialect.
    I think Oracle did the great job with introducing the Express to this "fire&forget" market. The installation is a snap, it just works out of the box, nothing serious to configure, opposite to what I remember from installing and working on Oracle 9 a few years ago. In some places it's still "you need to start SQL*Plus and enter this script", but it's definitely less than before. I also find the SQL Developer a great tool, it can do most of what we need to do with the DB, it's also much better and pleasant to use over Oracle 9 tools. Still, a few basic things still require too much hassle, and I'd say taking your schema to another machine is one of them. So I think that, if you do it well, the "schema copy wizard" you mentioned might be very helpful. If I was to give any general advice for Express line of DB/tools, I'd say "make things simple" - make it "a DB you can't see".
    That's, IMHO, the way to attract more Express users.

  • Code insight not working in sql developer 1.1.0.23

    i just downloaded today. insight options all checked in preferences section. popup time set to less than a second. i get nothing to work in sql worksheet or while modifying a package body.

    Hello,
    You should see things from this side sometimes ;-) It's a small team, working hard, very focused! Yes, there is indeed a sense of urgency and we are testing a patch SQL Developer 1.1 at the moment. There is always the battle between wanting to get an updated release to you, the community, quickly, and delaying to ensure what you get is good.
    Code insight, performance and many other issues have been addressed in this patch.
    As for your other point, we want the tool to be lightweight, easy to install, easy to use with a clear user interface. Perhaps there'll be a new battle when adding features, but that's the goal.
    Regards
    Sue

  • Table aliases and Code Insight Completion

    Oops, never mind, I see there are lots of threads on this... so the big question is: Does anyone know when this will be supported?
    One thing I am noticing with the new SQL Developer is that if you use table aliases (as we do here) that Code Insight Completion doesn't work. For example, if I type the following SQL:
    SELECT *
    FROM My_Table mt
    WHERE mt.
    At the point where I put the dot (i.e. mt.) I would assume that code insight would drop down a box showing me the columns in the alias mt (i.e. My_Table). But nothing happens. Now if I put the full table name My_Table in there (i.e. WHERE My_Table.) then the drop down occurs. But not if you use a table alias - and putting the full table name in defeats the purpose of using aliases.
    I know that in other SQL developers (such as PL/SQL Developer) this works fine and we are used to it working this way with aliases. Is there another way to get SQL Developer to do it this way? Or is this going to have to be a NEW feature later on?
    Thanks.

    TABLESPACE "USERS"

    2. Export from Resultset tables in query. As insert statements
    REM INSERTING into TABLE1
    Insert into TABLE1 ("ID","HIREDATE") values (1,to_date('12-DEC-06','DD-MON-RR'));
    Insert into TABLE1 ("ID","HIREDATE") values (2,to_date('21-JAN-07','DD-MON-RR'));
    I'm also getting the others working well too. I 'm running the latest version that we are about to release a patch on so it should be good when it comes out.

  • Mixed case table/col names and JDeveloper?

    I am thinking of trying to use mixed case table/column names in my Oracle 8i database.
    My hope is to achieve table/column names consistent with Java conventions (which I am happy with).
    Would this work with Jdeveloper 3.1? 3.2?
    Will JDeveloper/BC4J then generate mixed case names?
    Will I cause my self lots of pain and suffering? (I don't consider having to enter a correct mixed case name a pain; I do consider always having to quote it and/or use TOUPPER, etc. a bit of pain)
    Thanks

    I do consider always having to quote it and/or use TOUPPER, etc. a bit of pain)<<<JDEV isn't as much the issue. If you have simple applications and don't intend to change things over time, or create lots of interfaces, or support multiple development tools against the same database, mixed cases seem to work fine.
    To give yourself an idea of how cumbersome things will be, go in and
    create "myTable" ( "myField" varchar2(20) );
    now DESC ribe the table,
    select myField from it.
    Putting doublequotes around things all the time gets very irritating. Remember it is also for having special characters and embedded spaces... and I don't know of any PL/SQL SET ( other than the opposite: SQLCASE that forces just about everything to uppercase ).
    Oh, and then you get to encounter fun things like ODBC and JDBC drivers that may or may not like it. Or if you MOVE/EXPORT the data around, your target may or may not be happy.
    Working at several diversified, large organization with MANY database products/targets, I've become very disenchanted with making mixed case attributes and table names!
    All tools should support mixed case correctly. Reality has returned a mixed case of results. grin or not, as the case may be.

  • Case of schema names with code insight

    I'm running SQL Developer 3.0.04. I want my SQL statements to be of the form "SELECT * FROM schema.table" but I can't seem to find the right code insight option to make this happen. There seems to be a way to make everything lowercase (including keywords) but the closest I can get to what I really want is "SELECT * FROM SCHEMA.table".
    How do I stop the schema name being upper-cased when using code insight without affecting the keywords?

    I don't think you're understanding the issue. This is about code insight, not about the tables being defined in lower case. Here's a step by step example:
    SELECT * FROM mys<ctrl+space> -> SELECT * FROM myschema
    SELECT * FROM myschema.f<ctrl+space> -> SELECT * FROM MYSCHEMA.fred
    when what I want is "SELECT * FROM *myschema*.fred"
