Coherence Security

I am trying to understand the security configuration(s) that i need to perform to secure the coherence usage for our application:
Our application uses the following coherence features:
1. Distributed Cache
2. Portable Object Format
2. Invocation Service
3. Active Cache Configuration
4. Coherence JPA implementation
At a bare minimum reading the security guide. It seems I need to perform the following configurations:
1. Specify Coherence Privileges in the Java Security Policy File
2. Configure Host-Based Authorization
3. Enable the Access Controller Security Framework
Q. Is there any other security measures I need to uptake ?
Q. I am finding a bit hard to follow the security guide, is there some sort of whitepaper or presentation around which covers this security section for coherence as well ?

    When Coherence security is enabled, every call to do the cache operation do a security check. This is negatively impacting application's performance. I'm using the built in DefaultController & java keystore login. Is there any workaround so that the performance can be improved.

    OK apologies as I was going to just post the bits of code but I didn't get much time last night.
    This code was originally written by a couple of us who wrote some security and single sign on code for Coherence. The project is on Google Code here: http://code.google.com/p/coherence-security/
    The source is a Maven project so it follows the Maven directory structure. If you look in the coherence-security-core test sources there is a package called com.oracle.coherence.patterns.security.test.starter which contains all the ClassLoader code and classes to start a Coherence "cluster" in a single JVM.
    The com.oracle.coherence.patterns.security.ApacheDirectoryTest test class uses this code to start a cluster to run its unit tests. To start the cluster you call CoherenceClusterStarter.getInstance() for example the com.oracle.coherence.patterns.security.ApacheDirectoryTest testSecureClientWithUnauthorisedCredentials() method.

        }In the code above the first line sets the coherence.incubator.mainclass System property to the name of the class that will be run (in this case our secured DefaultCacheServer wrapper). Then the next line starts the psuedo-Cluster which the rest of the code uses.
    Note
    The Google Code above was originally done due to a requierment to secure Coherence using Active Directory (Kerberos). The code was started on 3.4 and eventually on 3.5.3 and then used to help Oracle change the Security API for 3.6. There are a few things not quite right and a few "gotchas" that are not in the code online.
    Anyone is welcome to take it and use it but I and the others who worked on it offer no warranty or guarantee it will work for you.
    As of Coherence 3.6 there are much simpler ways to do security - although if you want to use Active Directory or Kerberos some of the code on Google will still be useful.

  • Issue while enabling Access Control for a Coherence server node

    Im trying to enable access control for a Coherence server node, using the default Keystore login method shipped with Coherence. When i start the server i get the error "java.security.AccessControlException: Unsufficient rights to perform the operation". Please see below for the sequence of steps I've followed to enable access control. I just need to be enable Authentication (not authorization) at this stage

    Did you create the weblogic domain with the Oracle Webcenter Spaces option selected? This should install the relevant libraries into the domain that you will need to deploy your application. My experience is based off WC 11.1.1.0. If you haven't, you can extend your domain by re-running the Domain Config Wizard again (WLS_HOME/common/bin/config.sh)

  • NIO and Security

    I've run into essentially the same problem described here: http://kr.forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=576199. But I'm using Coherence 3.5.3 and I have set the '-XX:MaxDirectMemorySize=512M' prop, as suggested in that question from 2006. The curious thing is that the problem only occurs when Coherence security is enabled.
    I ran into this while testing an upgrade from Coherence 3.2.3. I've inherited the code, so I'm not positive that the test worked in v3.2.3.
    When security is disabled, this test runs OK. And other tests using the same security configuration work. It's only the combination that fails. Is there some special security configuration required icw NIO?
    I'm running on Windows XP, with Sun's JDK 1.5.0_15-b04.

    This security config is missing tags for class-name under access-controller and for callback-handler, but it seems to work in other tests, so I assume the defaults are used:

    The test driver is very simple, it attempts to write more data to the cache than is available in memory. The data it writes has a string key, '1', '2', ... and byte[1Meg] value.
    I've discovered that reducing the Java memory (-Xmx=?) from 1G to 512M gives me consistent behavior between security enabled and disabled runs. I'm now getting an OOME, but I think that's a backing store configuration issue - the OOME is thrown regardless of security setting.

  • Extends security

    Hi folks,
    I'm trying to get a reasonable cluster security solution working using Kerberos. I want to be able to secure nodes joining the cluster and secure things
    like Extends connections via the proxies. So far the cluster node security piece seems to be working fine (using the standard Coherence security).
    To secure the Extends connection I've tried using the Oracle example solution from here [http://wiki.tangosol.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=1343626 |http://wiki.tangosol.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=1343626 ]
    (even though it doesn't seem ideal due to the number of security checks) but it causes a problem when the Extends proxy node itself is
    authenticated with the cluster. The example solution uses an EntitledNamedCache class that calls checkAccess() in every method. In this
    checkAccess() method the code fetches the current subject from what it says is the "calling thread". The problem is that it actually returns the subject
    that the Extends node used to authenticate against the rest of the cluster - not the subject associated with the Extends call. Has anyone tried something
    similar and got it to work? Like I say - this only seems to be a problem if you have your Extends node authenticating with the rest of the cluster. I guess all it needs is a successful way to get the subject details from the Extends call.
    Another interesting issue is that if you obtain a Subject from the Coherence Security.login(..) call and then call Security.runAs(..) the subject
    is POF serialized and sent over the wire. If you obtain the same subject by using standard JAAS login, and call Security.runAs(..) it's not serialized. Odd.
    I'm using Java 1.6 and Coherence 3.5.1b461. Any help/comments would be much appreciated. Many Thanks,

    Hi Reon,
    The root problem seems to be that somehow the Subject is not being passed by Extend for you.
    Extend will always run in the context of a Subject if one is available. The security framework (standard Coherence security) will only log in if there is no current Subject. So, if the Subject is passed by Extend, the proxy will execute the message in a Subject.doAs(). The security framework checks to see if there is a current Subject and, if so, it will use it. Otherwise it will call the configured callback handler to log in. If in EntitledNamedCache you are seeing the security framework Subject, it means no Subject was passed and the security framework called the callback handler.
    Also, it shouldn't matter whether you use standard JAAS or not because the implementation of Security.login and Security.runAs just use JAAS.
    Extend only passes the Subject when a Channel is created, which is the first time a cache reference is retrieved. After that, the Subject associated with the Channel will always be used. My guess, is that you are not running in the context of a Subject when you get that first cache reference. Here is some sample code:

            cache.put("key", "value");The final issue for you is that the built in SubjectPofSerializer does not serialize public or private credentials and PrincipalPofSerializer only serializes principal name, so the built in serializers will not serialize a Kerberos ticket. The only solution currently is to write a custom serializer.

  • Where to start the journey with conherence

    Hi All,
    I am new to coherence, so would like to know from where I can start exploring cohrence mechanism for caching. I'm trying to explore integrating coherence with webcenter server.
    while installing webcenter stand alone server, even coherence will also gets installed (I guess) since I can see in my middleware home a folder with name "coherence_3.6".
    How can I start using this with my webcenter application? Can anyone help me on this?

    I would suggest you to learn the fundamentals of Coherence and start doing basic exercises and/or examples before integrating to WebCenter. I think the tutorial available at the URL below is very useful for people new to Coherence, as it explains step-by-step the basic installation (stand-alone first), the interaction with Java classes and the basic usage of the Coherence API and then more sophisticated steps like advanced features of Coherence, security, interaction with JPA and WebLogic.   • Well Known Address (wka) issue

    I am hitting some issues whilst trying to configure and use multiple wkas in my cluster using Coherence 3.5.3.
    It appears that only the first WKA is being picked up from the configuration file, rather than the full list.
    For example, if I include the following in my tangosol-coherence-override.xml config file:

    If we try and bring proxy and storage nodes up on tornado they will not start up, as they will attempt to use cyclone.

  • Extend + symmetric-encryption

    I am attempting to configure an extend proxy to use the symmetric-encryption filter, therefore am copying the tangosol-coherence.xml from the jar to be ahead of the coherence.jar in the classpath editing the use-filters section of the Proxy service as the following:

          </service>I then start a cache server with a cache-config defining an instance of the proxy service which throws an exception suggesting a password was not set, great! So I set the JVM arg -Dtangosol.coherence.security.password=<pwd> and restart the cache server and it is now up and running with extend proxy server bound to the TCP port and have some reassurance that the filter is being used.
    When I then start an instance of CacheFactory with a client config using a remote scheme with details of the above proxy server I can connect without requiring the same password or suggesting the use of a symmetric-encryption filter. My hope was I would be refused a connection to the proxy server without using the same password, am I missing something?

    Which version of Coherence are you using? The changes to the security API in 3.6 make it much easier to use than previous versions. As Luk has alreay said the security features are common to all editions of Coherence.
    What do you want to secure - presumably you are talking about access to caches etc from an application inside WebLogic. How does you WebLogic application communicate to the cluster, is the WebLogic application a storage disabled cluster member or is it an Extend client? The choice makes a difference to the options available for security.

  • Coherence Error at the time of Starting weblogic Server

    Hi ,
    I am getting below error at the time of starting Weblogic OSB managed server
    We are using osb_cluster1 (Unicast) for osb_server1 managed server.
    When Weblogic server try to start the managed server we get following Coherence errors and startup scripts try to point to Oracle Coherence 3.6.0.4.(its mainly happening in starting osb_server1 managed server, this error is not appearing during soa_server1 managed server start)
    We don't want to use the coherence at all, we are trying to disable the coherence feature, but hardly getting any success in it, every time during server start-up following error appears.
    Let me know if you have any solution to it.

    Hi NJ,
    In WL console while setting up cluster I have given Messaging
    Mode to Unicast,
    By default Multicast address and ports comes up
    Multicast Address - 239.192.0.0,
    Multicast Port- 7001
    I have modified the override file but still getting given error logs while server startup and its trying to look for override file in Oracle Coherence 3.6.0.4/coherence.jar

    Oracle Coherence: The Manifest is corrupted or inaccessible; some functionality may be disabledI can startup coherence manually via the console tools but can't get by this error when starting from within tomcat 6.0.26. However, the functionality of Coherence seems normal except the logging is missing the information contained within the Manifest. I have edited the Manifest manually, replaced it with one from 3.5.3, but nothing seems to work.
    Any help is much appreciated.

    I created a JSP as such:

    Got NamedCache: <%=cache.toString()%>
    </tt>
    </body>
    </html>I called it index.jsp and placed it in the root directory of a WAR file. In the WAR file I created WEB-INF/lib/coherence.jar. When I deploy this, everything works fine. Can you try this in your Tomcat setup and see if it works for you?

  • How to use coherence-web with a struts form bean

    We are trying to switch to Glassfish 3.1 but when we switch the persistence-type from "replicated" to "coherence-web" our struts applications start failing.  The first time we try the application the page loads.  But all calls from then on end in error.  The form bean is called FbCustomer.  Any help is greatly appreciated!!  Here is the error....

    Could you share with is the entire stacktrace?
    It seems that your domain classes are not being founded by the classloader, and this could be a consequence of a lot of things, but in general, it is a classloader issue. Your classloader is broken by some reason. Check if dependencies are well solved, and check if there are some NoClassDefFoundErrors in the stacktrace. Sometimes when the classpath is wrong, the entire classloader brokes generating strange behaviors like this.
    Also review the steps necessary to deploy Coherence*Web on GlassFish: http://docs.oracle.com/middleware/1212/coherence/COHCW/glassfish.htm#COHCW357
    Remember for example that, different from WebLogic 12.1.2, you need to deploy coherence.jar and coherence-web.jar at your package deployment.
