Collecting media for archival purposes

does anyone know about a way to collect all the media in a DVD Studio Pro Project? We have many, many projects, but the media used are across several hard discs - now to burn the projects including it's media on DVDs it would be great to have a collecting media function such as in InDesign - does that exist? Any suggestions???

There is no internal mechanism, such as in InDesign or Final Cut Pro, in DVD SP to gather assets like that -take a look here for some thoughts on project management in general

  • Backing up original DV tape data for archival purposes

I have >50 hours of unedited family video on original source DV tapes. I want to duplicate the data on the tapes so if the original tape is lost or corrupted, I'll have a backup. I've been looking at options that have a shelf-life on the order of decades for archival purposes.
Someday I may be able to afford a Blu-ray disc burner and (Delkin) gold archival BD-R discs, but while I wait for prices to drop the most economical way seems to make duplicate DV tapes.
    I have two questions:
Question 1: Is there a way to make a duplicate DV tape using FCE and a single DV camera (e.g. print to tape) or dubbing using two cameras without using FCE? If so, how, and which way is best?
Question 2: The original DV tapes contain data that indicates the date and time the video was originally shot. Is it possible to preserve this date/time data when making a backup DV tape?
    Thanks for your help.
Footnote --> For other people looking for ways to archive their video data, gold archival CD-R and DVD-R discs are available (e.g. MAM-A or Delkin) but their capacity is rather small and IMHO would require an inconveniently large number of them to store many hours of original video data. Blu-ray is still rather pricey and Delkin seems to be the only manufacturer of archival gold BD-R discs so far (BTW, they advertise 200-year life span; I've seen no details of their testing process for BD-R media). I've also investigated the longevity of data on hard disks and hard disks are unsuitable for safely archiving data for tens of years or longer. Magneto-optical discs are reliable but this format seems to have fallen out of favor. While magnetic tape is susceptible to EMI and other environmental risks, it is very economical.

It's easiest to dub between two DV cameras. Get a 4-pin to 4-pin FireWire cable and connect the two.
You have to test the second. It's dependent on the device. Most likely not. BTW, that information is not preserved in FCE.

  • Since loading Lion I can no longer burn photos form iPhoto on a dvd for archive purposes

Since loading Lion on my MacBook Pro, I can no longer burn photos form iphoto for archarving purposes.  I used to load the dvd and it would showup on the screen then drag highlighted photos onto the dvd.  Now, dvd only shows up sometimes and when it does, it tells me the new disk is full.  How can such an easy task become obsolete with this update.   I have also tried using idvd for archiving purposes but this process will only allow viewing.  I want to be able to reload photos back onto the computer at a later date.

I habe the same problem and cant find a helpful post on the web!
How can i get it back to work???

  • Highest compression for archive purposes

    Hey Everyone,
I'm looking to compress my videos at very high quality for storage using compressor. (some of my videos are 1-2 minutes others are 5 minutes). I tried a couple of times but my exports were 20 gb...too large.
In case I ever put together a demo reel or something, i'd like for my archives to be at the highest quality with the minimum space being taked up. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

Many institutions use MPEG-2 at very high data rates for archival or mezzanine storage. You can do this in Compressor. Create a custom MPEG-2 setting; set the stream usage to Generic; and then crank the bitrate up as high as you want to go...with the understanding that the higher the bitrate the better the quality, but the larger the file size. If you move the slider all the way up to 40 for SD material you can get around 3 minutes per gig.
You can then choose Program Stream in the extras tab and YUV encoding (Compressor 3.5) for higher quality muxed files.

  • Can I use Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection Edition for Commercial Purposes?

The title says all. Can I use the student edition of Creative Suite Master Collection CS5.5 for business and commercial purposes? I will use it to create a website for my mother's business, possibly a trailer, a logo, and art along the way. Also, I would like to make videos for a YouTube channel. Can I use the student edition for that?

Are the Student and Teacher Edition products the same as the commercial products?
Yes. Adobe Student and Teacher Editions are the same full-version software products.
So this would count as a yes, correct?

  • Best encoder for archival purposes?

I have been using AAC with 256 resolution recently for all my CD imports to iTunes but I occasionally get skips in the songs (happens on all computers). So two fold question.
    1) Am I better off using MP3 with Constant Bitrate of 256 or higher for best quality for importing and archiving to iTunes, and
    2) What causes the skipping of imported CDs even when the originals play just fine in other applications or CD players?
    Steve

archival is a tricky word. it implies you want to keep the files in as close to original as possible. for true archival quality, you could use the apple lossless format, but its not practical at all.
VBR is the best comprimise, it just sorts out the difficult to compress areas and gives them a higher bitrate than the rest of the file. i just set it as 192kbps with VBR, which is what i used with MP3, i figure the MP4 AAC LC encoder in itunes has improved since its early days, (not all that confident though it doesnt matter too much)
however, in your case, i think that the 'ripping' engine in itunes is the problem.
if the gaps and pauses are in the middle of tracks, then it is the drive correcting data incorrectly by using the ECC values from the cd/dvd drive to smooth over the invalid areas. try switching it off, it might help, but it depends on the drive and the CD in question.
it's been a problem in the past for most removable media, reading errors and correcting them has 2 approaches, guessing what is supposed to be there by using the error correcting codes (faster, default behaviour) or re-reading the data several times at low speed until the same data is read back (slower, can damage hardware by constantly spinning up and down to re-read the same sectors).
if the gaps are only near the end and beginning of tracks, then it's more likely due to the encoder and/or the disc. but ts uncommon, encoders are pretty good these days.
some copy protection methods break the mastering conventions (known as red-book CD audio) so you'd probably need to read the disc at 1x speed instead of 30x to 40x as you normally would. even then, it might not work OK.
there are worse forms of copy-protection, most are oriented towards disabling or slowing down 'ripping' across the entire CD's content.
if you have windows, getting a hold of EAC to rip the files is the preferred fix.
or, get a 1:1 cd copy program (i.e. programs used to rip copy-protected games will also rip copy-protected audio CD's) such as blindwrite or clonecd, which will allow you to make a backup from a damaged/copy-protected disc. you can then mount the disc image in a virtual cdrom and test that the virtual image is error-free.
you can also use slysoft's anyDVD to have an on-the-fly application that repairs copy-protected media i.e. dvd's and audio cd's with copy-protection for personal use. it also makes reading dvd's and cd's faster and less hardware intensive.
for mac, well, there's umm ... bootcamp. a regular toast/dmg creator won't do the job if its one of the nastier copy protection mechanisms, they damage/alter the error correcting data on the disc intentionally so that the drive itself mangles the data every time it grabs that section of the cd.
programs like EAC just read the data in it's raw form over and over then compare each pass for integrity. if the drive is passing the mangled data to the OS and correcting it on the fly (via ECC), then your drive just wont be able to read the audio cd's without those gaps and breaks.
so, in short, it's been a problem for a while.

  • ProRes versions of VHS tapes for archival purposes

I need to create archival digital copies of some aging VHS tapes. I have a sony mini-dv deck that I used with iMovie as a passthrough for my VHS deck. Final Cut Pro X won't let me import the footage without the timecode. I know other people have had the same issue and they end up using iMovie but I haven't seen a solution that will allow me to import the video Pro Res quality. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Kara

I recently archived about 400 hrs of original VHN footage shot back in 1985-95 era. Majority of them were captured directly via s-video cable and rca audio. The codec I used was DV25 and few DV50. Pro Res is quite overkill for VHS. The format is a mere 240 lines. Quite outdated to today's 1080p TV standards. Used FCP 7 and no tc needed. When comes to edit, switched to FCP X.
When you're doing DV on any deck, you're adding another layer of hardware decode and encode. DV has a 5:1 compression ratio w/ 4:1:1 sampling. It's not the best intermediate format. I'd try to minimize anything via DV and get it directly by using real time hardware. But this needs a decent capture card to do the job right the first time.
But for Betacam SP w/ analog component, I did capture via DV50 and Pro Res std. That should preserve ther analog 4:2:2 Beta SP tape formats.

  • Using a single Content server for DMS and also for Archive link documents

    Hi,
We have Planned for a single content server for managing the documents in DMS, parallelly as DMS Standard SAP objects are not available for all SAP transactions, i have proposed for making use of SAP Archivelink funtionality to maintain the documentations where Std SAP DMS does not provide a Solution.
    so here the question is
can a single content server be used as a content repository for Both DMS and archivelink,
can any one having done this pls state if it is possible to create different or Many Content repositories for DMS, Archive link in the same server,
is this a virtual creation or can we assign each repository a specific storage space which it should not exceed.
    Thanks and regards
    Sathish

    Hi sathish,
-- Through the ArchiveLink docuemnt Management interface, an SAP sytem can use various content servers as storage media. similarly, one contnent server can be used by multiple SAP systems.
-- A Content server always has a single database assigned to it. A database can therefore be used by only one content server.
-- A databse is split into as many repositories as necessary. The design of the repository is mapped in the SAP system.A repository contains documents.
Depending on your requirements,(if u have limited documents or with low requirements)  you can use the same content server for both DMS and Archivelink.
The number of documents stored on the content server is limited only by the size of the database.
Its better to have an external content server for archiving purpose, if your database size is increasing. Since the archiving systems storage is not dependent on the database.
U can also refer to the below thread :
How to Archive SAP DMS Data?
    hope this helps....

  • Unable to find moniker information for archive collection ArchiveCollection

In attempting to setup archive transfer between PROD and DEV I needed to rename an existing outgoing provider and the only way I found I could do this is to delete the existing provider and recreate it with a new name. I think by doing this it has caused and issue and now the CS log displays an error similar to below:

Does anyone know if this is caused by deleting the existing outgoing provider and if it is how can I resolve it?
    Regards,
    Andrew

I misspoke when I said to recreate the outgoing provider because an outgoing provider only provides the "connection" from DEV to PROD. What I meant is that if the provider is deleted and the automated archives are left alone, they would fail because that connection is gone. Since you recreated an outgoing provider (even with a different name), that connection should be there again.
I highly doubt each archive "stores" the name of the outgoing provider in its configuration, so I doubt either of those options would work. The only thing that makes sense is that the collection is "gone" (ie. DEV cannot find 'ecmprd2') or the PROD collection isn't called 'ecmprd2' anymore. I'm assuming "ecmprd2" is the instance name of your PROD instance, right? If you can, try deleting all archives and see if the error exists afterwards.
Why did you have to "rename" the provider to begin with?

  • Tiger Archive and Install Using External Disk for Archive?

Any way to do an archive and install by moving the saved stuff to an external usb drive? My 10.4.3 install disk is offering me only erase and install, I was updated to 10.4.8 and quite invested with software, etc., would really like to at least try archive and install, but of course the main drive is too full for that.
As an alternative, is there any way to use single user mode command line to locate and move files before doing the erase and install?
Finally, I gather I cannot boot os 9 with my mini. Is there any workaround for that?
    Thanks for any help.

    > One of the unexplained mysteries to me is what users are supposed to do about iTunes libraries?
Create and maintain a backup saved to an external drive or media (used for backup purposes only) as should be done with all other data that is important to you - for this very reason and for other important reasons. It isn't a matter of if but when your hard drive has a partial or complete failure since none last forever.
Since an iPod can be accessed/used via Disk mode as with any other external drive, many use their iPod for backup purposes which is a big mistake IMO since this isn't what an iPod is designed for. There are ways to retrieve music from an iPod but if you have your iPod preferences to automatically launch iTunes and update with iTunes and/or don't have Disk mode enabled, it makes it much more difficult if not impossible.
Do you have access to another Mac that supports being connected to another Mac via Firewire Target Disk mode? If so, you can connect your Mini to another Mac this way to retrieve your data and then you should probably consider reformatting the drive (which completely erases the drive) and then re-install Tiger and all software.

  • "recover database until cancel" asks for archive log file that do not exist

    Hello,
    Oracle Release : Oracle 10.2.0.2.0
Last week we performed, a restore and then an Oracle recovery using the recover database until cancel command. (we didn't use backup control files) .It worked fine and we able to restart the SAP instances. However, I still have questions about Oracle behaviour using this command.
First we restored, an online backup.
We tried to restart the database, but got ORA-01113,ORA-01110 errors :
    sr3usr.data1 needed media recovery.
Then we performed the recovery :
According Oracel documentation, "recover database until cancel recovery" proceeds by prompting you with the suggested filenames of archived redo log files.
The probleme is it  prompts for archive log file that do not exist.
As you can see below, it asked for SMAarch1_10420_610186861.dbf that has never been created. Therefore, I cancelled manually the recovery, and restarted the database. We never got the message "media recovery complete"

    Frod.

    Hi,
    Let me answer your query.
    =======================
Your question: While performing the recovery, is it possible to locate which online redolog is needed, and then to apply the changes in these logs
    1.   When you have current controlfile and need complete data (no data loss),
then do not go for until cancel recovery.
    2.   Oracle will apply all the redologs (including current redolog) while recovery
         process is    on.
    3.  During the recovery you need to have all the redologs which are listed in the    view    V$RECOVERY_LOG and all the unarchived and current redolog. By querying  V$RECOVERY_LOG  you    can find out about the redologs required.
    4. If the required sequence is not there in the archive destination, and if recovery process    asks for that sequence you can query V$LOG to see whether requested sequence is part of the    online redologs. If yes you can mention the path of the online redolog to complete the recovery.
    Hope this information helps.
    Regards,
    Madhukar

  • Prevent collective billing for a particular customer

    Dear Gurus!
A customer has requested that they DO NOT want collective billing, in other words they want a separate invoice for every delivery note.
All other customers are currently subject to collective billing where if there are multiple deliveries on the day, they are consolidated into a single invoice for the customer.
    Many thanks in advance!
       -Alvin

    Alvin,
When you want to create the collective invoice in VF04, there is also a field called "Sold to Party" where you can not only include the customers, you can also exclude the customers you want to exclude from collective billing. The exclusion is not visible when you just double click on the field. You click teh multiple entries button (which is at the right end of this field) and there double click on the column where teh values are given. Now a screen comes. Here you can select "Not equal to" indicator and then give the customer number for whom you dont want collective invoice.
You can save this as a variant and then process the invoice for all customers other than this customer. If you want to create individual billing for this customer in VF04, you can just create another variant for this purpose.
