Colours in 'Print with Preview' window are wrong

I am using Photoshop CS on a Mac G4 (PPC) with OS X 10.4.11.
I usually use 'Print with Preview' to print photographs. I used to get good results, but something seems to have changed (or I have accidentally changed a setting somewhere). When I open an image in Photoshop, the colours on my monitor (which I regularly calibrate) look right. But when I go to 'Print with Preview', the image shown in the small layout window is now much darker, reds are more brown and in general the colours look quite wrong. And what is even worse is that when I print, the results match the wrong colours in the Preview window and not the correct colors that I see when I look at the image directly in Photoshop.
I attach a screenshot, showing (on the left) a colour test image opened directly in Photoshop CS and (on the right) how it looks in the Preview window.
Can anyone suggest what may have gone wrong? I should be very grateful for suggestions.

The words that helped [me] the most to understand Photoshop color management theory are:
Color Management starts with a good monitor profile (to PROOF the color accurately on the monitor), and Color Management ends with a good target profile to PROOF the color accurately on the print.
The file (the document's Source Color Space) is independent of Photoshop:
The Color Management System CMS, Photoshop, ONLY uses the monitor profile for one thing: To PROOF source file on the monitor (the monitor profile has zero to do with how the file prints).
The Color Management System CMS, Photoshop, ONLY uses the printer (target) profile Print Space for one thing: To PROOF source file on the paper (the printer profile Print Space has zero to do with how the file looks on the monitor).
+++++
While this simple PROOFING ANALOGY doesn't address the pitfalls of relying on a bad monitor to evaluate and adjust digital color, it does make two important facts about Photoshop and professional color-managed printing workflows:
1) The printer can PROOF (print) the source file faithfully regardless of how right or wrong the monitor is set up, and
2) The monitor can PROOF (display) the source file faithfully regardless of how right or wrong the printer is set up.
Getting a known good file (like the Adobe RGB—or better yet the ProPhoto RGB—PDI Photodisc-GettyImages RGB reference image) into Photoshop allows me to evaluate the monitor alongside the print to help me identify where the problem is occurring.
+++++
BTW, thank you for the helpful and solved hits.

  • Print with preview different than image using ICC's

    Hello;
I am using CS2. Suddenly when I print with preview and choose "any" icc profile, I see an off color image. This off color image is printed off color and not what I originally had. It is approximately 1/2 to one stop density lighter (and redder) and the shadows are cyan/blue, instead of neutral black.
If I choose Adobe RGB as the profile and print, the image is close but not correct. This is happening with CS2 and elements 6.
Of course the r1800 is set for ICM and off - no color adjustment.
I have down loaded new profiles, reinstalled my epson r1800, checked for missing files in CS2.
I am running windows XP Home, 2gig memory, dell xps. I have been using this system for over two years without a problem until now.
Does any one know where I can check for the problem and how to correct for it?
    Thanks

I can't determine whether you mean the print preview dialog's image, or the
preview that is optionally displayed by the Epson driver. The preview
shown by the Epson driver (as opposed to the one shown in the CS2 print
preview dialog) is misleading. The reason is that the RGB values for the
printer are being displayed directly on your monitor. Epsons tend to print
a bit on the cool side, so it's normal for the image to have an overall
    reddish look to it.
You say two other things that seem ambiguous to me. One is that if you
choose "any" icc profile, the colors change. Does this include your
monitor profile, and other profiles such as sRGB and Adobe RGB? If they
all appear the same, then I would suspect that something is highly out of
kilter here - for example that you have ICC enabled in your printer driver
settings and are double profiling. The second thing is that the final
printed output matches the off color preview image. I have no explanation
for this, other than random coincidence.
It's hard to be definitve, about either of the above points, because I'm
not sure which preview image you are referring to.

Printing to Adobe RGB should produce very subdued colors, yet you are
seeing close to normal colors. Again, a puzzle that would cause me to
check your printer driver settings. It is very easy to double profile, and
with Epson's this almost always produces a magenta image.
    > Of course the r1800 is set for ICM and off - no color adjustment.
For Windows, I'm used to the Epson drivers providing you with about four
choices, which include a "no color adjustment" choice, manual,
PhotoEnhance, and an "ICM" choice. On the Mac, I believe you can select
ICM from a pulldown, then disable color adjustment with a separate check
box which disables the pulldown. If you could explain this descrepancy
    that might be helpful.

Next step is to reset your prefs - hold down shift, ctrl, alt during
startup and say yes when it asks for your first born child.

Read Ian Lyons's web page on how to set up your color prefs
    http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ps9_colour/ps9_1.htm
After resetting your prefs, and going over your color settings, I would
advise you to do a systematic test as follows:
o Set your printer, and photoshop's working space to sRGB mode
o Create a one inch by 8 inch neutral gradient
o Print it, and verify that the gradient is reasonably neutral, and about
    the right brightness.
o Set your printer to no color correction
o Have Photoshop print using the profile for your printer
o If the gradient looks wrong - too dark, or with color casts as you
descrive, the problem may be a bad profile. Use Curvemeister's profile
plotter to get an idea of the quality of the profile, whether it has abrupt
    breaks, etc.
    http://curvemeister.com/downloads/profileplotter/dercurvemeisterprofileplotter.zip
If you decide the profile is bad, and cannot find another one, then live
with PhotoEnhance mode over sRGB, and specify sRGB as the printer profile
in Photoshop. Work that way until you find a better profile.

  • Print with Preview: Screen option

Might be a bit obscure but this is a question about the screen option in print with preview.
For the purposes of photoetching (transferring a half tone positive image onto a metal plate through the use of photosensitve film for the purposes of fine art printmaking) I am trying to print a black and white photographic image using my epson printer. I have been told that by adjusting the screen option in print preview it can convert my black and white photograph into a version that has finely spaced white dots in the black / grey areas. I have tried completely different ways of doing this (eg. the mezzotint effect) but this doesn't have the desired effect. The fine dots are needed so that one it is transferred to a metal plate and etched the ink will hold in these tiny dots (or the spaces between them).
Anyone have an idea how the screen option works? I have been told it may be totally dependent on the type of printer I have. The following link explains the process and mentions they use an inkjet printer.
    http://artmondo.net/printworks/articles/photshop.htm
Even if you can't help me please can anyone explain what the screen option does as I have experimented with it and it does seem to add fine dots of sorts to the image, although very fine dots which I may be confusing with the grain of the paper.
    http://artmondo.net/printworks/articles/photshop.htm

When Print screen comes up, I click on print, but the option for selection is not bold. I cannot access it to print a selection that I have highlighted. What am I doing wrong? The only options available to me are "all" and "pages". In order to print I must send an e-mail to another server and then print the selection from there. This a very convoluted way of printing. There must be something easier in Firefox.

  • CS5 Disabling Print with Preview

I have this problem where some images, not all, when I go to the print dialog box (File->Print) and then print the image, it brings up preview first and then prompts to click print at the bottom. You all know what this is; it's Print with Preview. But I don't want ths. We have this fancy copier at work and the copier codes are not sent when using this method and thus it won't print the image.
Some of the images when you hit "print" it will go directly to the printer. The only thing I can seem to figure out is that those images that are flattened (jpeg's or even PSD files that are flattened) use Print with Preview and images that have alpha transparencies or layers go directly to the printer.
How do I prevent Print with Preview alltogether? I can't make it stop going to the "Preview" application.

Go into the "Print Settings" dialog. If you exit that dialog by clicking "Preview", the print will go to Preview.app. If you exit that dialog by clicking "Save", the print will go to the printer.
The settings are saved with the document, and also in the application preferences as the default for new documents that don't have settings.

  • Where is print with preview in cs5?

    Hey guys!
I have a huge problem. I run a small screenprinting company
We just upgraded from CS to CS5.
We use photoshop to via channels seperate CMYK pictures for imprint on clothes etc.
In the old "print with preview" dialog box there was a choice where you could change the screen angles and lpi to get different raster when you make film positives. This choice is not available any more but is a very important feature that I need badly to be able to use photoshop.
Is there another way to do this?
    Please respond quickly
    Thank you
    B rgds

    So here's the printing engineer.
The reason "Screen" was removed was that it was using PostScript Level I screen commands which did not work correctly on many Level 2 and Level 3 printers. And on most RIPs / PostScript printers, there is a way to set the default screen angles and frequencies. We didn't have the time to fix the problem correctly, so after some discussion, we decided to remove it and add it to our feature list for the future, making sure to do it in a way that's compatible with newer printers, while maintaining compatibility with the old, too.
The good news is that it's not entirely removed. If the screen settings were working for you in an early version of Photoshop, and you save a document with those screen settings from that earlier version, you can print that document from Photoshop CS5 (to a PostScript printer) and the settings that are saved in the document will be used. If you change anything in the "Output" portion of the Photoshop print dialog, they'll likely be clobbered, but if you don't, they seem to work correctly (it's hard for me to say with 100% certainty, as I don't have a printer available which actually uses the old screen commands, so I'm stuck reading the PostScript, but the commands are in there with an old document that I saved from CS3, and it appears there were no changes to the output settings between CS and CS3).
So what you can do is make a document with Photoshop CS with the correct screen settings in it, then open that document in CS5, paste in new content, and Save As... a new file (so you don't clobber the document you created), you should be able to make any number of new documents in CS5 which will screen the way you want. You will also need to go into "Print Settings" to get the page setup correctly, but you could also save that information into the file you re-use so you don't have to do it every time.
I know it's not a perfect solution, and it's pretty clunky. Sorry about that. I'm hoping to get time to add back the screen functionality in a way that will work with today's printers.

How can I share a laser printer with a windows laptop. I can't install software or drivers on the laptop for a USB switch box, but the printer drivers are already installed.
It is a work laptop and printer. There is no WiFi to the laptop, just USB.
Is there a USB switch box that does not need any drivers?
    Thanks
    Julie

    Hi
    Thanks.
I am not able to install any drivers or software on the work laptop and WiFi is not allowed either.
Currently I am swapping cables, but it means crawling under the desk and is a bit of a pain.
I was hoping that there would be a switch box that does not require drivers.
Crawling and banging my head it is, then!

Customer names with Cyrillic characters are wrongly shown in Bex Analyser. The master data is correctly maintained and extracted\loaded by BW for these customer (Master Data object is correct). This might be a Bex Designer issue.
Furthermore, it has nothing to do with the local settings, when copying the name of the customer to Bey Analyzer the name is correctly shown.

    Hi,
We are facing the same problem with the turkish characters, Our system is BW 3.10 (3.30 Cont) and ECC 6.0. The turkish characters are displaying correctly at the table level, but not at the RSRT or the Bex level.
The turkish characters are displaying correctly at the table, RSRT and Bex level if we load the same record from the Non-unicode Prod system to the Non-unicode BW Dev system, but if we load from the unicode QA system the same record is not displaying correctly.

Always check your LAYERS panel to ensure you've activated the image layer on which the pixels reside, and not an adjustment layer.  Also make sure you've clicked on the image if there's a layer mask present, so the filter won't be inadvertntly working on the mask.
Assuming you're not on the wrong layer, have you checked to see whether new drivers are available from the web site of the maker of your video card?  Many, many display problems are resolved by updating display drivers.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, selectHelp from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Mar 11, 2012 4:13 PM (in response to Linc Davis)
Did all of that yesterday, with the Apple Representative on the phone, and nope, still a problem...it was kind of exciting, really, they kept going up and up the tiers of support until I got disconnected...Fortunately I had the email address of the gentleman who was helping me so that I could email him back and let him know that we got disconnected...as you might imagine, he still has not emailed me back.  They were able to receive a copy of the form that I use for charting and try it in their facility on their computers, so we know:
1- it is not just my computer.
2- it occurred only after installing Lion OS X, not sure if they have tried it on Snow Leopard, but that's what I would have done if I was them...assuming that somewhere in Apple someone has not upgraded to Lion.
3- it is not just my software.
I think the problem is with the newer iteration of Preview  not communicating well with the Adobe .pdf.  probably some line of coding that needs to be written and insertedinto their program for multiline text.
:-)  Thank you for your help!

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart

Hi Mattia, Welcome  to the HP Support forums.  I see that you would like to learn how to print from your HTC Windows phone to your Officejet Enterprise X585 printer. There is not a Windows version of the HP ePrint mobile app or the HP AiO Printer Remote app and I am unaware of any timetable for the release of a Windows version of the mobile apps. Once the ePrint feature on your printer is setup you should be able to email the printer from your HTC Windows phone.   I noticed that you are also requesting help on connecting your printer to the Cloud.  For this I recommend posting it in the commercial forums.  You can do this at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/ I hope this helps.

  • HT203687 Apple Imap servers in iCloud for Windows are wrong

I have several problems with syncing iCloud with Outlook 2007 running on 64-bit Windows 7.
The first is that iCloud Control Panel assumes the IMAP server is p08-imap.mail.me.com.  This does not work. My login is [email protected]  If I use the Login Name MYNAME and my iCloud password the mail works when I rename the servers imap.mail.me.com.
Apple - can you please reset the iCloud control panel so that (a) the user can set the email server names (b) the defaults are imap.mail.me.com?
There are several posts noting this bug - please correct it ASAP.
Problem 2 - is only Mail is synced. No Contacts, No Tasks. I suspect it's because it can't log on or times out. I have over 3000 contacts that I can read on iCloud.  In fact, I did sync them for a while yesterday - but when I shut a .PST file it vanished and when I reopened the .PST file the contacts never came back - so I suspect they are not really on my PC.  I think this is a timeout or security issue.  I have McAfee Security Center - but Outlook trusts you!

Of course I did. I opened every single .pst file I could see.
In the end I created a new .pst file and made it the default file. I then could use the Contacts and Calendar. However, the email servers still had the wrong names - so I deleted the email account in Outlook so it wouldn't ask me for a password that didn't work.
The problem in Outlook was that iCloud gave the incoming and outgoing mail servers the wrong name - it was prefixed by p08.imap.  The Apple iCloud client for Windows software should check that the mail servers have the wrong name.  It is not robust software at all.
I suspect that either the .pst file was corrupted or one of the other supporting files.
So your answer did NOT help.
