Column order in Mail (or From column won't stick)

Not my first post about this, but thought I'd try again. Back in January I was asking if anyone else had the issue where the From column just won't stay on the left side. I like From, Subject, Date, To. But one way or another, the From column jumps over to the left of To. ALL THE TIME.
Anyway, I switched to Entourage and have been using it for 8 months. But I was missing some Apple-gui-goodness and thought I'd try Mail again.
One day has passed, same problem.
So I know there's at least a few of you with this problem, but now my question is this - does not -everyone- have this problem, or just nobody else cares? Do YOU have this issue, and if so, why are you not pulling your hair out?
It's also during research like this when I see just how inaccessible Apple support really is. I've bought Applecare on every Mac I've ever owned, yet I just can't bring myself to spend an hour with someone on the phone with a...uhhh....well, an accent I have trouble understanding. Not to mention the mind-numbing-madness of rebooting, deleting prefs, root user, blah blah blah. I've tried it all.
Maybe I just needed to vent.
I'm going back to Entourage, because Mail is still a POS (it's Junk filtering is basically worthless as well, compared to Entourage, but I'd live with it if the stinking columns would stay put).
But please tell me, how is it that there's not thousands of people screaming and complaining about this? Am I just one of the cursed????? Sigh.
Quadcore G5 2.5Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   ENTOURAGE USER. AGAIN.

JF, I did understand you. It seems you've misunderstood me, though.
My desired arrangement:
FROM / SUBJECT / DATE / TO
And that's what I've been using these 4 days without a hitch. My preferred arrangement is this:
Subject / From / To / Date
move on if you wish, I was kind of hoping for some fresh
insight - nothing personal
It seems you missed the smiley. I'm willing to figure out what's going on here, and that's the reason I've been trying to reproduce the problem. But I can't, that's all. I'm just wondering whether, according to your observations, I should leave the settings that way a few more days before giving up.
Also note that the -only- other column visible is the 'dot'
column (message status?) that you can't remove anyway.
In my case, I also have visible (both before and after making the change) Flags on the left and Size / Attachments on the right, i.e. my preferred arrangement is this:
Flags / Read Status / Subject / From / To / Date / Size / Attachments
What I've been using the last 4 days (and am still using) is this:
Flags / Read Status / From / Subject / Date / To / Size / Attachments
I clicked on the 'Drafts' mailbox, then back to the Inbox
Just tried it. No change. Your preferred arrangement sticks for me no matter what...

  • Mail selecting from column - Yosemite no good.

In Mavericks and previous OS's if I select a person's name in my inbox, then click the 'From' column I then see that email along with all the others from that person. If I use Mail in Yosemite performing the same action puts all the From mail into alphabetical order and unless the person you selected starts with 'Z' it disappears.
Either they have done a poor backward step or they have tried to be clever and there's a new method in doing this.
    Can anyone offer any suggestions?
    Thanks

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Change mail's from column (received from)

I am trying out the LetterBox plugin for Mail (to get 3 vertical panels rather than the two horizontal panels). The only thing is, the "From" column shows the address, and I rather it show the smart name if I have them in my Address Book (to save some space in the panel & to make it look cleaner).
I know that I can get the e-mail header to show the smart name rather than the address, but what about the "From" column?

I don't think you can change this. The from column uses whatever name the sender has supplied, without the email address, so "Joe" <[email protected]> will show as Joe. When I view the message, this will be matched against my address book and the name from the address book will be used in the viewing pane. If the sender has supplied only an email address without enclosing angle brackets this will be used in the from column. If they supply only an email address enclosed in angle brackets then the bracketed form will be used twice in the from column. This last has to be a bug!

  • Anyway to cleanup Mail's "From" Column???

OK let's say my Dad's email is [email protected] & he is listed in my address book as Dad Monroe.
How come in the "From" column it lists I received an email from [email protected] & then in the header of the email under from it correctly lists it as "Dad Monroe"
Is there anyway to configure it such that when I receive an email from someone that has that email listed under their name in my address book, I see in the "from" column just their name as I have it listed in the address book, much like what I see in the header of the email?

  • Mail sent from iPad won't show on MacBook

I've had my iPad for less than a week and just noticed that the emails I send through my Gmail account (IMAP) from the iPad won't download to my MacBook, whereas the ones I send from my laptop do appear on my iPad as soon as I press the send button. This is odd for the ones I send directly from the Gmail page also show up on my laptop when I open Mail. Anybody knows of a way around this synching problem? I've searched this forum as well as the Gmail website but haven't found any solution so far and don't know where else to look.

Sounds like you do not have SMTP for your iPad Mail configured correctly with Gmail. SMTP is used for sending email. When you send email from the Gmail web page using Safari on your iPad you are completely bypassing the Mail client app which is why that works.

  • Show items from subfolders won't stick when searching (CS5)

For some reason after selecting a folder, and making sure "show items from subfolders" is selected, when I do a search in that folder, "show items from subfolders" gets deselected. Any idea why this might happen? I'm pretty sure it has worked normally in the past.

Well, in that case, it sounds like this is causing the problem. If you can't read the cache, then you probably can't read an index either.
Without knowing anything about your computer system, I'd suggest that you need to check for general account permission setup problems before looking at Bridge specifically.

  • Mac Mail 'Sent' Folder Column Settings get lost after exiting application

In Mac Mail, I have set the columns I'd like to view in my 'Sent' folder to "To", "Subject" and "Date." Those are the only fields I need to see in that folder. It is NOT a smart folder. If I exit Mail with the 'Sent' folder open, when I come BACK to Mail, the 'To' column has disappeared and the 'From' column has taken its place. Has anyone noticed and fixed this bug?
On the up-side, Letterbox works just fine.

You haven’t answered what type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)...
Report the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/ folder in the Finder.
In order to post the exact file names and avoid typing mistakes, proceed as follows. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, if you’re looking at it in View > as List mode, first collapse any expanded folders so that the Finder only shows the files and folders at the first level of ~/Library/Mail/. Now, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post.
Before actually posting that information, edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you should keep private, e.g. replace any real username with “username” to hide your real email address. Try to be consistent in how you disguise those details, though, as we may need to refer to them in subsequent posts.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Mail application trouble--columns wont stay

I keep resetting the order of my columns, trying to put the FROM column to the left of the SUBJECT column, but it keeps going back to a position on the right, just left of the the TO column.
How can I get my customizations to stay put?

Mail has some glitches when it comes to preserve these settings, and I still don't know of a sure fix. Note also that Mail stores these settings globally for all mailboxes, so you can't customize them differently for each one, except for small variations such as the sort order or whether messages should be organized by threads.
If Mail refuses to preserve your changes when a particular mailbox is selected, try doing it with a different mailbox. In particular, if you have more than one account, try with the Inbox aggregate and also with any of the individual account mailboxes in that group.

  • BUG: SQL Developer 1.5.3 CSV export column order broken

There's a bug in the 1.5.3 release of SQL Developer regarding data export. This bug re-orders the column order in the data export to be alphabetically sorted. This produces mangled CSV files if used on a table or a view.
This is a critical bug to me since I need to produce lots of ad-hoc data CSV export files. I'm staying with SQL Developer 1.5.0.53 (53.38) for now as it doesn't have this problem.
This is the same bug as present in Jdeveloper 11.1 as described in my post here: BUG: Jdev 11.1.1.0.0 -- DB table data export column order is not preserved
    Quoted from that post:
When I connect to Oracle database, get the table list, right click on the table and select 'Export Data'->csv. The dialog box opens with three tabs: Format, Columns, Where. The column order displayed in both tabs Columns and Where is alphabetic. Because alphabetic ordering re-arranges columns from their initial ordering in the table, this screws up CSV export because columns are not in their intended order. This same problem occurs when I try to export data from views to generate a CSV file with a particular column order.
Please open/check bug report if it's already open.
    Thanks!

This happens with all of the export options for tables or views if you right click from the connections tab table list. If I pull it up in the main window and go to the data tab, I can then right click and it will keep the column id order for some of the views and tables. But not all.
I am running 1.5.3 Build Main 5783 on a Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 platform

  • BUG: Jdev 11.1.1.0.0 -- DB table data export column order is not preserved

    Hello,
I've ran into a problem with Jdeveloper 11g, public release, Build JDEVADF_MAIN.BOXER_GENERIC_081002.2127.5156. Oracle IDE version is 11.1.1.0.31.51.56
When I connect to Oracle database, get the table list, right click on the table and select 'Export Data'->csv. The dialog box opens with three tabs: Format, Columns, Where. The column order displayed in both tabs Columns and Where is alphabetic. Because alphabetic ordering re-arranges columns from their initial ordering in the table, this screws up the export because columns are not in their intended order. This same problem occurs when I try to export data from views to generate a CSV file with a particular column order for our vendor. Since Jdev scrambles the column order I have to rely on SQLdeveloper to generate CSV exports, since SQLdeveloper has the same functionality but it preserves the column order.
It would be nice if Jdeveloper preserved the column order on export.
    Thanks!

    Update:
This bug is now also present in the SQL Developer 1.5.3.
I've posted a bug report on the appropriate forum: BUG: SQL Developer 1.5.3 CSV export column order broken

  • How to restrict the columns order movement at runtime in 7.3

    Hi Experts
    We are using EP7.3 Portal.
We have modified the  Cats table in a customized ESS Cats DC . We have added a another table
say subTotals table (This table does not have header) to calculate the hours as per business requiremnt just below the cats table with proper allignment.
Now at run time i.e when launched through Iview in the portal, the user can able to
personalize the columns order of Cats Table (Moving columns from one place to other) by Right click on the
    table>User settings->other-->Re Arrange the columns
We have 2 tables so moving the first table column order will effect the second table which displays the totals (This is readonly)
Our requirement is we should not allow the user to change the column order at run time (At least we need to restrict 8 columns outof 13 to 14 columns)
How can we restrict the columns order through code i.e by controlling the property if any
    Regards
    KALYAN

    nwa->configuration management->infrastructure  --->application modules
filter the name column with "tcwddispwda"

  • Full address in 'From' column

I'm looking for a method to show the actual email address in Mail's 'From' column rather than the 'friendly' name that's shown if it's present in the email header.

There is no way I know of to tell Mail to not be "smarter" than it should be. AFAIK, the closer you can get is unchecking Preferences > Viewing > Use Smart Addresses, but this only applies to viewing the message, it has no effect on the From column.

  • Forms won't do order by after the formula columns or constants in union all

    i have a big select as :

    select ......., id doc_id, '2' op from .....

lets say 5 rows with values id plus 1,2,1,2,3 for op.
In a program unit i have a cursor with this select and i fetch every row and write them in a text file type .csv.
    The problems are :
    1) it won't do the order by after op ,
i say order by id, op but the result is only ordered after id
    ... id op
    ... 1 2
    ... 1 1

    select ......., id doc_id, '2' op from .....
    union all
    select ......., id doc_id, '3' op from .....

in the csv the column op in empty , so i only get the id information
    ... id op
    ... 1
    ... 1
    .... 2
    Any idea ?
Oh and my screen goes white , the form block sometimes when i have a "difficult "

    select * from
    ( select .....,id doc_id, '1' op from .....

if[u] id is 3 column positions, and '1' op is 4 column positions in UNION-SELECT

  • Export TO XXL from ALV Grid - Column order mismatch

    Hi All,
The user is trying to download data from Option -> Export -> Spreadsheet which will create XXL.
But while downloading there is mismatch in the order of columns displayed on the alv grid & columns downloaded.
All character fields are displayed on left, then date fields then quantity fields are downloaded to XXL. but in ALV Grid user has chosen a layout in which date fields come first.
Please help me to find solution

Grid display using    'REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY'. From the alv grid output, user is trying to download data using export -> Excel . so for download there is no custom code.
We have copied standard report and added few more fields to the custom report. strangely Standard report also has this issue.
I searched for SAP notes also..no clue

  • Datagrid Column Ordering from Recordset?

I often populate my datagrids with a recordset, an array of record objects, by passing the recordset in the dataprovider constructor. However, this results in unpredictable column ordering i.e. it doesn't correspond to the order of the fields in the record object. I know you can define the columns and then use add item to add the records to resolve this, but I'm curious why the datagrid doesn't order the columns according to the record object field order in the first place and why the order can actually change between renderings of the datagrid?

Thanks for the response. I understand the method to order the columns, I'm more curious why doing something like this:
    var arr:Array = new Array();
    arr.push({label:"item 1b", qty: 1});
    arr.push({label:"item 2b", qty: 2});
    var dp:DataProvider = new DataProvider(arr);
results in the columns being randomly ordered. It be nice if the data grid always produced columns in the order of
    label   qty
Its probably rooted in the fact a for..in loop doesn't get values from an object in a useful order either.
