Columns in playlist

Is there a way to display a song's start and end time at the play list as a columns? Or is there a plug-in for this functionality?

No it is not possible to display start and stop times in a playlist. All the available columns are shown in View Options.
I do not know of and application that does this, although someone else might.
In theory it should be possible to write one as start and stop times are available in the iTunes COM interface.

• ITunes 11: Can't remove Genres column in playlist List View

In previous versions, when playing playlists, I use List View, displaying only Artists and Albums. In iTunes 11, I'm unable to remove the Genres column; the items in View > Column Browser are grayed out.
Also, ⌘-L (Go to Current Song) doesn't work.

Just uncheck "Genres."

• How do i apply same column headings in a playlist to..

all the other playlists in itunes?
This should be easy to do because many people only want to see the same column information displayed regardless of what playlist they in.
For example, if i only wanted to see 'file type', 'date modified', 'artist', and 'album name' for every playlist in itunes there should be a way to apply the same column header settings for playlist "wonky music" to every playlist in itunes.

and if the columns in playlists reflect the 'Library' column settings, then how do you explain the fact that every one of my playlists is different?
Because you changed them.
They are the same as the library view when they are created. They don't change if you change the library view.

• Playing tunes in a playlist in random order

How does one set music in a playlist to play in random order (is that the same as 'shuffle'?)
Within my various playlists I've set them all to be 'shuffle' by clicking on the shuffle button in the bottom-left of the itunes screen (the button turns blue to show it's been depressed). However, all the playlists still play in the default order. This also happens in the main music window.
I get so bored with the same old tune starting each time I switch my ipod on! (It happens in both my ipod classic and my iphone 3GS)
I'd also like to have my podcasts play automatically in the order they were added. Is that possible?
Appreciate any help. Thanks.

How they play and how they are displayed in iTunes are two different things.
If Shuffle is turned On, the songs will play shuffled. If you sort on the first column (with the numbers), the songs will be sorted and displayed in the Shuffled order. (turn Shuffle off and on and songs will be displayed in different order)
If you sort on any other column, the playlist will still be displayed in that order but the song playing song will jump around.
If Shuffle is turned Off, songs will play in order of the column you are sorted on.

• What happened to easy column chooser?

In iTunes 12, it looks like they took away the easy checkbox panel for choosing columns in playlists (formerly accessed by command+J).
Now, when you hit command+J you get the "view options" panel, then you have to pull down the "show columns" dropdown menu over and over to add or remove columns - many of which are nested in additional flyout menus (e.g. personal).
So, the functionality is still there, but you have to use many additional clicks to do the same job.
What gives?
Am I missing something?
Seems like a small thing perhaps - unless you manipulate playlists a lot (like me).

KT,
Under "Responding", I have "Quote the text of the original message" and "Increase quote level" boxes checked.
I also have the "include selected text..." radio button checked.

• Can't change track location in playlist by dragging anymore

can't change track position anymore on any playlist, what am I missing?

Make sure that the sort indication (the little black triangle) is above the left-most column, i.e. the column of numbers.
If the triangle is above any other column, the playlist will stay sorted by that column, and you will not be able to drag individual tracks up or down

• How do I easily find out what playlist my songs are in?

I'm an iTunes novice and have about 3000 songs on my computer. I've put most of them on playlists but compared some numbers and discovered that there are a couple hundred stragglers that I haven't put on playlists.
Is there a way to quickly/easily see what playlist my songs are in? It would be great to have a "view" option column showing playlists. I know I can right-click on each individual song and do "show in playlist," but that's a real pain in the neck when you're dealing with thousands of songs.
I'm open to any suggestions!

Welcome to AD!
All I can think of, is a smart playlist 'match all' where
playlist is not playlist1
playlist is not playlist2,
etc
except.....you need to leave out the main playlist, Music, from that

• [Desktop][Playlists] Album Art for Playlist Tracks

I'm pretty visual when it comes to music. I'll identify with an album cover rather than a band/artist name.
So once I've created a playlist of new music I find it hard to recall where it's come from or who the band are as there is no visual reference for each track.
I propose that there is an additional column in playlists which displays a small thumbnail of the album/single cover. Perhaps this could enlarge on hover.

• ZEN MICRO PLAYLISTS PROBL

LOVE MY ZEN MICRO SO FAR. ONLY DILEMMA IS THIS. THE PLAYLISTS DONT SORT BY SONG TITLE OR EVEN ARTISTS. ALSO THEY DONT DETECT DUPLICATES. FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU ARE ADDING TO A PLAYLIST, THE PLAYLIST WILL BE IN THE ORDER THE SONGS WERE ADDED. IS THERE A WAY TO SORT THE PLAYLISTS BY TRACK TITLE ON THE PC OR MICRO. THE COLUMNS DO NOT SEEM TO BE PORTABLE. I REALIZE THIS IS NOT SUCH A LARGE CONCERN BECAUSE GENERALLY I PLAY MY PLAYLISTS ON RANDOM. HOWEVER I WOULD LIKE IT IF THESE WERE SORTED SIMILAR TO THE ALL TRACKS MODE OF PLAY. PLEASE REACH ME AT [email protected]][email protected]

>> You cannot sort the columns on the playlists.
MTORT44, this issue has been discussed before. Don't you think that allowing sorting by clicking column in playlist is quite dangerous? Imagine that you have spend hour to arrange the order of 00 tracks in a playlist. An unintentional click on the column will destroy the order that you have built earlier. And you need to spend time arranging the order again.
For tracks in a playlist, it is unlikely that you want to sort the order of play by title, artist, or whatever. Usually, you would manually sort it. In MediaSource, you can drag and drop the tracks in a playlist to re-arrange the order.

• LIstening to multiple podcast episodes at one time

Is there a way to have your iPod go directly to the next episode of a podcast instead of going to the main menu? For instance, if I suscribe to a serial and want to listen to multiple episodes in one setting is there a way to do this without having my iPod so back to the main screen at the end of each episode? Thanks.

Hi CJS
That should work with normal Playlists in iTunes 5 (probably in iT 6):
- Chose your Podcast episodes and drag em to the left side into the Source column (new Playlist will be added)
- name Playlist and sort the episodes the way you like (e.g. click in the first column an then drag your episodes in order as you like them to play)
- Check iPod "Settings..." and chose the Music tab and select your new Playlist to update with your iPod.
- After Update has finished you should find the new Playlist in the Playlist folder on your iPod (in the music Menu or at the Top in main Menu)
enjoy listening to your Podcasts without pause
I am doing this on my iPod mini with smart Playlists (rules with PlayCount and ratings)
(does not work with new firmware on iPods older than Video iPod and iPod nano
--> see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=179445 )
PS: if your episodes are listed (on iPod) the wrong way round - go to your Playlist in iTunes and reverse the column you have chosen (click on top of the Row)

• I cannot change song order on playlist with highlight and drag. I have turned off shuffle and highlighted the far left column( up/down arrow) of playlist. My mac pro is running 10.5.8  and am using itunes 10.4.

I cannot change song order on playlists (old or new) with highlight and drag. I have turned off shuffle and highlighted the far left column (up/down arrow) of playlist. My mac pro is running 10.5.8  and am using itunes 10.4. I can't drag and drop "music" to "playlist" but can right click and get the option to "add to playlist." No such option for moving song within playlist, only the up and down arrow which moves song from top to bottom list, so if it is #4 from top it will move to #4 from bottom. Stupid I know. I spent over an hour with Apple support, reinstalled itunes, restarted and rebooted computer. Networked with my laptop which is running 10.6.8 and itunes 10.4 and it can drag and drop. The final Apple support solution was to reinstall my operating system. I would prefer not to. Any other ideas?

After looking at other people's posts, I think it's official: there is a bug. Itunes support said I should not have lost the drag/drop tool and I haven't on the laptop that is running itunes 10.4 and operating system 10.6.8. I chatted with someboby who lost both his drag/drop and side scroll and what we have in common is a wacom tablet for a mouse. My laptop is a wireless mouse. I reinstalled whatever updated driver that wacom has out there, shut the system down for night, hoping for magic, but alas none to be had. So if I want to change song order, I network the laptop and desktop, share the screen on the laptop, drag and drop to my heart's content and curse Apple for making me work this hard to find the tool that was once at my fingertips. Apple also let me know that if I want to share songs in household that the hundreds on songs that were purchased for .99 need to be repurchased for another .30. Maybe Apple is holding my drag/drop tool captive til I pay up the money or Maybe the next update will fix the problem, I for one give up for now.

• Why can't I use column browser on my new playlists?

Is it just me?  But I used to be able to hit Cmd-B in order to look at the column browser in iTunes in any playlist I created.  I looks like it's been taken away in iTunes 11.  What gives?

The column browser doesn't make as much sense in your playlists as it does in your library and does seem to be gone. It does still work in your library. While you're in the Music tab, choose Songs to see everything. Cmd-B will still bring up the column browser.

• The column browser is no longer available when trying to view music in iTunes. I'm only able to use the column browser only when viewing playlists. Why?

I noticed that after one of the recent updates to iTunes, I am unable to view my music using the column browser type view. Only when I select one of my playlists is the music displayed with the column browser. When I select Music to view the contents of my library, only the album covers are displayed on the right side. The old column browser type display is not available any more - it is grayed out. I do have "show list views for all media" checked in my Preferences / General tab.
Did Apple screw up or is it me?

You're welcome.

• Shuffle no longer syncs the playlists correctly and I cannot "see" the shuffle at all.  There is no "device" folder in the left column.  This may have occured after an Apple I-Tunes software update, but I am not sure. Software or hardware??

• I can't change the view of a smart playlist in iTunes 11.  Columns display at the top will not convert to list

Hi -  I just upgraded from the previous version of iTunes to iTunes 11.  One of my previous playlists appeared as a smart playlist, and when it displays there is a set of columns at the top with a separation splitting the columns from the list.  I am trying to get rid of the columns from the top of this screen, but have been unable to find any information on how to do this.  This only happens in this playlist, and I am unable to locate a view option or display setting that will change it.  The "Column Browser' is unavailable in the view menu.
Thanks

Is the App-Installation restriction in Settings/General/Restrictions on that iPod activated?
Does the problem come back after restoring "as new iPod" without using the backup?
