COM - RMI

Hi,
No group for this... so next closest one is here.
I am attempting to compile an .exe com object using weblogic.comc and jview.
My environment seems to be right. I can compile support DLLs for the exe.
However, when I attempt to compile the exe, I receive an error:
C:\>jview weblogic.comc -d \weblogic\classes
OPCClientServer\OPCTest\Debug\OPCTest.exe
error: Failed to load typelib: Error loading type library/DLL.
Failed to execute: jactivex.exe /X:m- /xh /l /w /r /nologo /p weblogic.com
/d \weblogic\classes \OPCClientServer\OPCTest\Debug\OPCTest.exe
The "Using WebLogic COM" example says a COM object may be an ".tlb, .old,
.ocx, .dll, or .exe".
Anyone know why it won't accept an exe?
Thanks,

* Systems Engineer
* Ztango.

that exception doesn't provide a lot of useful information. my guess is that you are missing some classes on the client side.

  • RMI server behind firewall--must use host as name, not IP

    Server is running behind a firewall, which runs such that any machine behind the firewall cannot use the external IP to get back to itself.
    That is:
    - outside IP = 192.171.20.5 (port forwards 1099 to 192.168.1.5:1099)
    - inside IP = 192.168.1.5 (rmi server listens on 1099)
    from the machine inside (192.168.1.5), it is IMPOSSIBLE to create a socket to [outside ip](192.171.20.5), port 1099, and expect it to get back to the machine inside--the firewall prohibits this.
    I -can- use name-based lookups, such that I can edit the hosts file on the inside box to route (myhost.com to 192.168.1.5). So, if everyone's DNS resolves myhost.com -> 192.171.20.5, then clients anywhere can go to myhost.com:1099 and will be redirected to my internal machine (192.168.1.5:1099).
    The problem with this is that the names get translated to IPs and sent back to the client.
    Is there a way to keep the names as names, so that both client (using external real-world DNS entries) and server (using local hosts file) can both resolve to the proper IP addresses?
    I'm starting server, as follows:
    java -Djava.rmi.server.codebase=http://myhost.com/rmi/ -Djava.security.policy=/policypath/policy -Djava.rmi.server.hostname=myhost.com mypkg.myclass
    The client connects and gets this message (from a connection exception):
    java.rmi.ConnectException: Connection refused to host: 192.168.1.5;

    Server is running behind a firewall, which runs such
    that any machine behind the firewall cannot use the
    external IP to get back to itself.I dont really understand this statement.. Machines behind the firewall referring to the external ip would be going to the gateway, not themselves.. Or do you have an internal AND external ip on the machines behind the firewall? Or are we referring to the gateway machine as an internal machine as well as external?
    That is:
    - outside IP = 192.171.20.5 (port forwards 1099 to
    192.168.1.5:1099)
    - inside IP = 192.168.1.5 (rmi server listens on
    1099)looks good, what kinda OS/firewall? If we're talking linux/ipchains (or iptables) with ip masquerading, I may be of some use to you...
    from the machine inside (192.168.1.5), it is
    IMPOSSIBLE to create a socket to [outside
    ip](192.171.20.5), port 1099, and expect it to get
    back to the machine inside--the firewall prohibits
    this.If you're on the internal network, why can't you just go for the internal ip addr? If I'm understanding correctly, you want internal dns requests for myhost.com to resolve to 192.168.1.5, and external dns requests to resolve to 192.171.20.5? That should't be a problem...
    I -can- use name-based lookups, such that I can edit
    the hosts file on the inside box to route (myhost.com
    to 192.168.1.5). So, if everyone's DNS resolves
    myhost.com -> 192.171.20.5, then clients anywhere can
    go to myhost.com:1099 and will be redirected to my
    internal machine (192.168.1.5:1099).the hosts file has nothing to do with routing, it's simply a dns-type thing... If your dns is giving external users a 192.168 address as the ip for myhost.com, they will never get to it. 192.168 is not routable on the internet, i think most inet routes will drop packets from 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x.
    Is there a way to keep the names as names, so that
    both client (using external real-world DNS entries)
    and server (using local hosts file) can both resolve
    to the proper IP addresses?As long as your dns is working correctly, java doesn't care if you use ips or host names.. Hostnames are preferable, so when you change your network around, you wont affect your rmi server.
    I'm starting server, as follows:
    java -Djava.rmi.server.codebase=http://myhost.com/rmi/
    -Djava.security.policy=/policypath/policy
    -Djava.rmi.server.hostname=myhost.com mypkg.myclass
    The client connects and gets this message (from a
    connection exception):
    java.rmi.ConnectException: Connection refused to host:
    192.168.1.5;Is your server compiled with the 192.171 ip? That's not gonna work, you have to use the same IP the server is running on. I'm still not clear on your network layout, is 192.171.20.5 and 192.168.1.5 the 2 gateway ip's, or is 192.168.1.5 a physically different machine? I'd be willing to bet that your server is compiled with the external address, and if that's not the same machine, then there's no chance of that working....
    There's more than port forwarding going on.. IIRC, java rmi keeps track of its own ip's.. A client request to an external ip will not connect to a server running on the internal ip, even if you forward the port, rmi itself doesn't recognize the internal as the ip it's trying to get to (even if it is true), so it bombs out.. This can happen if you run the rmi server on a gateway, and compile the server with the external ip, and try to connect to the internal ip.. If you want external machines to connect, you MUST run the server on an external ip.
    Give a little more info, we'll getcha running... I'm also assuming you have full control of your network (ie, firewall/dns)

    Hello JAAZ,
    I got the same error yesterday. I was a little frustrated, because the day before everything was fine...

            at sun.rmi.registry.RegistryImpl_Stub.lookup(Unknown Source)The solution was, that I did some refactoring and some of the classes were now in different packages. I updated the system on the client-side and now everything works again.
    I think debugging RMI-applications is not as easy as "normal" applications ..

    But after compiling the below iam able to generate only the stub not the skeleton i dont understand why it is. But it is working whenever i use the Registry application i.e given below

  • Mysterious NullPointerException when loading class by RMI

    Hi,
    I have a distributed application where an RMI server puts tasks in a queue and clients connect to the server to obtain tasks to process. My problem is the following. When I install the task code on the clients, and just use RMI to obtain tasks from the server (i.e. no dynamic code loading is being done), everything works fine. However, this approach is not efficient since every time the task definition changes, I'll have to reinstall code on the clients. Therefore, I use RMI to load the task class dynamically and instantiate it on the client (note: a task does not implement Remote, nor is it serializable, for reasons that I'll explain below. Instead I obtain the task class from the RMI server and instantiate it on the client). When I take this approach, I get a NullPointerException inside the task code, that does not occur when I install exactly the same code manually on the clients. The exception always occurs at the same point in the code, but not at the same moment (e.g., sometimes a client processes 100 tasks before it happens, another time 5000, etc.). Moreover, when this happens, all client processes running on the same physical machine (but different JVMs) stop processing, but without throwing any error.
    My question is if anyone has seen this kind of problem before. I know the above description is rather vague, but the specifics are a bit of a long story. Here they come:
    RMI server code snippet:
    public interface ConcurrentEvaluationManager extends Remote {
    //An Individual is serializable and constitutes the data needed for the task
    Individual pollNextToEvaluate(long timeout, TimeUnit unit) throws RemoteException;
    //A FitnessFunction is not Remote nor serializable and constitutes the task algorithm
    //(Performance evaluation of Individual, involving some heavy physics simulations)
    Class<? extends FitnessFunction> getFitnessFunctionDef() throws RemoteException;
    }Code for the class that loads the FitnessFunction code dynamically:
    public class RemoteEvaluatorLoader {
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    //Obtain evaluation manager from RMI registry
    ConcurrentEvaluationManager evalMgr = getRemoteManager(hostName, rmiServerName, port);
    //Obtain fitness function definition and instantiate it
    Class<? extends FitnessFunction> fitnessClass = evalMgr .getFitnessFunctionDef();
    FitnessFunction evalFunction = fitnessClass.newInstance();
    //Start getting Individuals from the manager and evaluate them using the fitness function until the
    //manager says there will be no more Individuals to evaluate
    Evaluator eval = new Evaluator(evalFunction, evalMgr);
    eval.run();
    }Specifically, a task consists of evaluating the performance of a robotic controller using some heavy physics simulations. A task is therefore made up of two things: the encoding of the controller (an Individual, basically a list of numbers), and the performance measure/simulation (the FitnessFunction). The latter is subject to frequent change, so I want to load this code dynamically on the clients using RMI. I can't pass an instance (either serialized copy or remote reference) of the simulation to the client, since it involves communication with a native DLL.

            at jbeagle.concurrent.RemoteEvaluatorLoader.main(RemoteEvaluatorLoader.java:33)The line where the error happens is where the insect robot tries to move its legs. One of the legs is null. Again, this doesn't happen when I run the application without loading the code dynamically and install the code for the InsectFitnessFunction, Experiment etc. on the client manually. In the current scenario, all code (InsectFitnessFunction, Experiment, Insect, and other necessary classes) is loaded dynamically and instantiated locally on the client (of course, the necessary native library and the JNI wrapper for it are installed manually on the clients).
    Has anyone encountered something like this before? Might there be a problem with the way I am dynamically loading and instantiating the class? At first I thought it might be due to some problem with distributed garbage collection, but I don't see how since the relevant classes are instantiated locally, even though they are loaded from a remote codebase.
    An alternative version of the error is one where my JVM crashes (error log below). I believe this is basically the same problem, except when the JVM crashes the null pointer happens in the native library.

    Never mind. I have now managed to reproduce this condition without RMI, so it seems to be due to something else after all. Marking this thread as answered.

  • Has the RMI registry properly started?

    I removed all the package statements from the ComputePi example in the java.sun.com rmi tutorial. I compiled all the classes in one folder and also generated the stub and skeleton. Then I said start rmiregistry. Another Dos window briefly appears and vanishes. Then I said java ComputeEngine. Connection refused to host. Nested ecxeption is java.net.ConnectException.... Can anyone tell me what the problem could be. I am not getting any confirmation that the rmi registry started properly. I am using windows 2000 professional.

    Is there a registered process in the Windows task-manager that looks like the registry??

    could this be the reason, you don'y say what browser you are using.
    From IBM alphaworks site: http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com
    RMI for IE4 installs the missing Remote Method Invocation (RMI) support for the Microsoft Java virtual machine, thus enabling RMI for all Java applications that use the Microsoft Java virtual machine.
    Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (IE 4.0) is one of the applications that uses Microsoft Java. Once installed, this package enables IE 4.0 to run applets that use RMI; such applets include the Java Management Applications for the IBM Nways Manager products.

  • Server Callbacks with a AWT Client

    I have writen an online auction system which has 2 clients, a bidder and a seller.
    When a seller closes an auction i want to refresh the list in the list box on the bidding client. I know that to use callbacks the client needs to have ain interface and stub and skel file blah blah but my client is AWT.
    How can i make it extend UnicastRemoteObject and Implament my interface file if it already extends Frame?
    I am a little comfused. If i create a whole new ClientImpl.java, ClientInterface.java how do i call these methods from the client and how do i start the GUI?
    Argh. Help pls.

    1. Create a CallBack Object (I think there is a manual for that in java.sun.com RMI Part)
    2. Send this object during login to the Server
    3. In the callback object store a reference to your frame
    4. in the frame class create some methods for the callback

  • RMI-IIOP JNDI lookup returns com.sun.corba.se.internal.iiop.CDRInputStream

    I have two different RMI-IIOP java clients, one is working fine and the other is not. Both are using weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory from wlclient.jar in WLS 8.1sp5 and JDK 1.4.2_6.
    One java client is a straight-forward java main. JNDI lookup is returning EJBHome_Stub correctly loaded by sun.rmi.server.LoaderHandler$Loader
    The other java client is a complex java program with multiple threads and many jars. A thread does the same JNDI lookup as the simple java client, but the object returned is of type com.sun.corba.se.internal.iiop.CDRInputStream_1_0$1 which has NULL classloader (bootstrap classloader).
    What condition triggered the WebLogic InitialContext to default to com.sun.corba.se.internal.iiop.CDRInputStream?

    Kevin Fung <> writes:
    This is usally symptomatic of an IOR without the corresponding stub
    being loaded, usually because the correct security manager is not
    set. However the client jar bypasses the security manager to try and
    avoid this problem, so I am confused as to why you are seeing this. Do
    you know which object it is accessing? Can you try putting IIOP stubs
    for it in the client?

    Manish

    Hi Manish,
    It seems that you are using a custom security provider and the weblogic server is not able to find the class / jar file that contains the class.
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: Failed to load class com.msl.security.providers.SessionPrincipal]
    Make sure you have all the required jar files in the server classpath.
    You can use the JarScan utility to find the jar that contains the class.
    Refer the below link regarding the jarScan.

    Manish

    Hi Manish,
    It seems that you are using a custom security provider and the weblogic server is not able to find the class / jar file that contains the class.
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: Failed to load class com.msl.security.providers.SessionPrincipal]
    Make sure you have all the required jar files in the server classpath.
    You can use the JarScan utility to find the jar that contains the class.
    Refer the below link regarding the jarScan.

  • HTTP:RMI EJB Unable to create InterfaceType: com.evermind...SubordinateXA..

    Hi,
    I have deployed some ADF BC as EJB to oc4j1013 and want to access them
    using the HTTP tunnel. It works perfectly within JDEV
    1) Calling EJB withing JDEV with RMI
    2) Calling EJB within JDEV through HTTP:ORMI
    3) Calling EJB with RMI as JClient Web Start
    But does not work as JClient Web Start and HTTP Tunneling with the stck below:
    oracle.oc4j.rmi.OracleRemoteException: Unable to create InterfaceType: com.evermind.server.SubordinateXAResource

    Please advise
    Thanks

    I did what Manu suggested with no success. Alternatively, I registered the driver jar with embedded OC4J preferences > global > libraries. Still does not work. Please, note, that when I run JUnit tests against my BC4J application modules with JDBC URL as connection type, everything works just fine. The problem comes while running the JSF application when the application module is using JDBC DataSource as connection type.
