Command line display disappears during boot [solved]

I've brought my machine up to date with systemd, and have run into this latest problem.  I boot with syslinux.  My machine has started giving me kernel panics when I boot with the primary configuration, which had
acpi=off
in the append line, I believe to address this very problem.  If I boot with the fallback, which does not have this entry, I get a boot that I can access over ssh, but the command line display disappears after running through a few lines.  Commenting out the acpi language in the primary gives the same result as the fallback.
If I can't boot with it in there, and can't see the screen with it out, what do I do?
[edit]
I was looking for some information on the boot process to explain what changes during the boot to cause the screen to go from visible to invisible.  When it used to boot, I remember a font change happening part way through the boot, but don't remember what caused it.  Searching for the boot process on the wiki only gives the systemd page, and I didn't find anything there that was helpful in this regard.
I am downloading a live iso and will try booting with that to see if the display issues are present using that approach.
[edit]
Ok, it had nothing to do with acpi.  I was running the nvidia driver.  My machine has a processor with a gpu, and apparently it decided to hand off to my intel gpu, which has nothing attached to it, instead of sticking with the nvidia.  May have to do with KMS (wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_Mode_Setting).  So I deleted the nvidia driver per the wiki instructions and added the nouveau driver, enabled the KMS per the instructions, and now I have a command prompt.

    hi, i've a problem with my macbook pro 13" late 2011! After an re-initialization on my macbook happens that only during boot i see a green vertical line on the right side of my display and it disappear after login. This green line starts from the upper side and finish to the down side. Can it be a problem deriverd from a bad os installation??
    i'm attaching a photo but i'm sorry for bad image.
    thanks for the help!

    Try a pram reset:
    Shut down your Mac.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
    Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears. Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • PSE 5 disappears during boot up

    I have installed PSE5 onto a new Vista machine. It opened fine untill I did a catalog restore. Now the opening sequence begins but after a few seconds and before the program opens, the window closes and is gone. I can find the program in the Task Manager Processes window but it hasn't opened. I have to end the process before I can try to open the program again but to the same result.
    There may be a software conflict? I've installed a lot of software recently because this is a new machine but no software that wasn't on my old XP machine. Could there be another reason? Problems loading the catalog?
    I have un-installed and re-installed the program with the same result.

    Many people have reported that 5.0.2 runs well on both Vista 32 and Vista 64, so I suspect your problems are independent of Vista 64 per se.
    Your symptoms suggest installing the Adobe licensing-service update. I don’t recall any one before reporting the need for the update with PSE 5, but the symptoms are a very close match, and it’s easy to try:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Install_the_licensing-s ervice
    If that doesn’t work, you could download the free trial of PSE 7 and see if it’s worth your money.   Many people have reported that PSE 7 works well on Vista 64 (I have it on one of my computers but use it there very little).  See this FAQ about PSE and Vista 64:

  • Command Line Support Not Working in OSD

    I am trying to deploy an image to a dell optiplex 760. I have added all of the storage and nic drivers from Dell's WINPE package, and then all of the drivers from the Intel site for the nic to my boot image. I then enabled command line support on the boot
    image,  after all of this I updated the boot image on my DP. When the SCCM splash screen comes up it says loading network, and then all dialog boxes disappears and the machine reboots. During this time when i press F8 nothing happens. I get no command
    prompt window, and it doesnt pause the reboot. Any Ideas?

    Sorry for my ignorance, when you say you installed every driver in there are you referring to adding them to the driver database or to your bootwim. Also if you cant grab the logs you might be able to get a report based on an unknown system, look in reporting
    under "History of a task sequence deployment on a computer" if there was anything recorded before it bombed out you might be able to get some info.
    Im still leaning towards a network driver though, can you snap an image of the drivers you have loaded into your preferred bootwim.

  • How are Windows Server Backup and Command Line Tools used in vCSHB installation?

    How are Windows Server Backup and Command Line Tools used during the installation of vCSHB?  Is it required in all types of deployments (PtoV, VtoV, PtoP)? Is it used to create the files that are put in the file share for the second node to use during vCSHB installation or is it only used during a vCSHB clone operation of a Physical to Physical deployment?  Are these tools not used in some deployments?

    You need Windows Server Backup installed on source and destination, and during the installation of vCSHB the installer will invoke the wbadmin (Windows Server Backup Utility) and will backup configuration and application data (application data is optimal but can decrease the sync time after installation of secondary node). On the secondary node you will need only run the vCSHB installer and everything will be restored.
    Check this blog entry for some more info about some problems in P2P deployment: http://www.vcoportal.de/2013/12/vmware-vcenter-server-heartbeat-restore-on-a-second-node-a-journey/

  • [SOLVED] No display during boot

    Sometimes after the reboot my laptop looses display between the messages "Booting the kernel" and "Running early hook (udev)". This happens in 98% cases of reboot. Even if I shutdown the computer and start again, it won't start; I've to keep the laptop shutdown for 5-10 min then my laptop starts nicely. When the computer looses display GPU fans speed begins too increase.

  • [SOLVED] Random kernel panics during boot (Waiting for UDev uevents..)

    Update 2012-03-31: Workaround confirmed to work, see tenthirteen's post.
    Update 2012-02-03: I've narrowed down the problem to the 3.x kernels. Downgrading to kernel26-2.6.38.5-1, with the other packages up-to-date (using nouveau instead of nvidia driver), solves the problem. Still, I still consider this a problem since it forces me to use an older kernel, so if anyone has any idea how to find the problem I would be very thankful!
    When I came back home after the summer vacations I did a huge upgrade with pacman -Syu (of course I read the announcements before). This included linux (3.0.3-1) from kernel26 (2.6.38.5-1) and udev (167-2 -> 173-3). After this point, the boot process randomly fails from time to time; today I had to restart more than 20 times before my machine would boot successfully.
    It always occurs during "Waiting for UDev uvents to be processed". Some of the errors are:
    1. The computer freezes when the message is shown (cursor stops to blink).
    2. Nothing happens for a long time, then Waiting for UDev uvents to be processed [ FAIL ]s.
    3. Short and long error messages that look similar to this guy's (except for the last line).
    I greped for some of the error messages in /var/log but they don't seem to be logged, so the examples below are from my handwritten notes and thus not very complete (there are a lot of other error messages except these lines). It's also possible that there are some mistakes. Note that they're from different boots.
    BUG: Soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 23 s! [modprobe:256]
    BUG: Unable to handle kernel
    --[End ...]--
    note: udevd[225] exited with preempt_count 2
    Kernel panic - not syncing: stack-protector: Kernel stack is corrupted in: c0147299
    BUG: Unable to handle kernel paging request at f8d20076
    Code: Bad EIP value.
    EIP: ...
    CRZ: ...
    --[End ...]--
    Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle task!
    Lock: Bad EIP value
    Note: modprobe [296] exited with preempt_count 3
    WARNING: at kernel/watchdog.c:240 watchdog-overflow-callback+0xac/...
    BUG: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000286
    BUG: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)
    These errors are seemingly arbitrary which makes it very hard to find the problem. Sometimes it works without a single complaint, sometimes it says something about "No caching mode page present, Assuming drive cache: write through", and sometimes I get different errors (the examples above are only from today!). As you can imagine, it gets pretty annoying.
    So far I've tried to:
    * Use the fallback mode - nope.
    * Rerun mkinitcpio -p linux - nope.
    * Append noapic and nomodeset to the kernel in GRUB - nope.
    * Install and try kernel26-lts - seems to work, although I don't understand what other differences there are (e.g., it doesn't start X). At least this seems to suggest that it's not a hardware problem.
    * Unplug all USB devices before boot - sometimes works, sometimes not. Doesn't seem to be a direct connection.
    * Remove my custom settings in /etc/modprobe.d - nope.
    * A lot of other things I've forgotten.
    Edit: I forgot to mention, once it's booted, the system works perfectly fine. No kernel panics etc. That's the second reason why I suspect it's not a hardware failure.
    I've been thinking about trying to downgrade the kernel and udev, but with the renaming and all dependencies I'm not sure how to do that.
    Since I've run out of ideas how to troubleshoot this issue, I would appreciate if I could get some suggestions here. I've search around and found similar posts but no solution that works for me.
    Finally, here are some more information.

    I've temporarily fixed the problem by doing the following:
    removed cryptsetup (1.3.1-2)
    removed lvm2 (2.02.88-1)
    removed mdadm (3.2.2-4)
    removed linux (3.0.6-2)
    upgraded mkinitcpio-busybox (1.18.5-1 -> 1.18.2-1)
    installed gen-init-cpio (2.6.36-1)
    upgraded udev (173-3 -> 167-2)
    upgraded mkinitcpio (0.7.3-1 -> 0.6.11-1)
    installed kernel26 (2.6.38.5-1)
    upgraded nvidia-173xx-utils (173.14.31-1 -> 173.14.30-1)
    upgraded nvidia-173xx (173.14.31-2 -> 173.14.30-1)
    upgraded initscripts (2011.07.3-1 -> 2011.04.1-2)
    upgraded net-tools (1.60.20110819cvs-1 -> 1.60-18)
    I also restored my old /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, /etc/inittab and /etc/rc.conf.
    I'm still interested in a solution to the original problem. Is it a problem with my configuration, the new kernel, the udev version or something else?
    The difference in inittab is just a -s option and the mkinitcpio.conf files are the same except for some comments. rc.conf has the biggest changes and is now (removed comments):

  • [Solved] Intermittent graphical issues during boot w/ kernel 3.5.3

    Before, my computer booted every time, no problem. Then I updated my system from pacman and got the new kernel, and ever since then it freezes up completely during the boot process... Sometimes. Not always.
    When it happens, it is during the "triggering udev events" part (where the screen resolution changes from the early boot resolution to the normal resolution at which the consoles normally stay). It *always* printed out these messages during that portion before: (not verbatim but these are taken from /var/log/errors.log, and they correspond).
    Aug 29 10:52:28 destruct-o-bot kernel: [    5.035681] sp5100_tco: mmio address 0xb8fe00 already in use
    Aug 29 10:52:28 destruct-o-bot kernel: [    5.569406] kvm: disabled by bios
    Aug 29 10:52:28 destruct-o-bot kernel: [    5.646396] microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin
    Aug 29 10:52:28 destruct-o-bot kernel: [    5.649536] microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin
    The KVM error message is new. But it started happening at the same time as the hard freezes did.
    There are three paths that happen: The computer might get to the triggering udev events, blank the screen as though it were switching resolutions and then never turn the screen back on but freeze up hard. Or, it might black the screen as though changing resolutions as usual, but then turn back on to a screen of vertical lines (black and gray), and be frozen up hard. Or, it might boot normally.
    I didn't see anything in dmesg, but then again I don't really know what to look for. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

    The random blank screen during startup is still there with Kernel 3.5.6. Did a "blind" dmesg this time. I don't really know about these log-files but I did a vimdiff with the dmesg of a proper rreboot and found the difference in the latest radeon entries which didn't show up in the proper-boot-dmesg:

  • G5 will not boot into OSX - stays at a command-line prompt

    My G5 will not boot into OS X. I would appreciate and and all advice. Thanks.
    What happened:
    I had the G5 running one morning, with the Isight camera on, plugged into the front-console firewire port. I was running EvoCam software.
    At about 2 hours into running, the cam stopped broadcasting – I got home to check it out three hours later, and the screen was black, and the fan was louder than I had ever, ever heard it on this box.
    I did a hard shut-down with the powerbutton on the Cinema Display monitor.
    At reboot, I see a grey screen for approx 5 seconds, with a dark grey apple logo, and then the screen goes to black, with a command-line prompt.
    It’s been like that ever since.
    I ran the Apple Hardware test, from the internal CD drive, and it shows no errors.
    I cannot boot from an OSX installer DVD. It won’t recognize it. It goes straight to the black screen and Command line prompt.
    I have re-seated the RAM, as well as the Airport Card. The only other card – which I have not re-seated, it the video card.
    I am able to use the machine in Target Mode, so I can extract data from the drives, which is great. Oddly enough, I’m able to use the front-console firewire port to connect to my other Mac in Target mode – with no problems. Also – in Target mode, the fan never goes above the usual quiet self.
    I would appreciate any advice one can provide. Thanks!
    The machine:

    It’s on it’s 3rd Motherboard – and now it’s fully out of Applecare warrantee.

    4GB Ram
    2 internal drives: 160GB + 300GB

    Well, Apple Support does have articles on:
    Isolating Issues in Mac OS X
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392
    won't boot or login
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464#symp1
    And if those don't work, call.
    With G4 there is/was
    "Fix for a Mac that won't power up
    Mirrored Doors G4. When you pressed the power button, the button would light up, but the computer would not turn on. The fans on the power supply wouldn't turn on.
    FIX: unplug the machine, pull the clock battery, hit the power button to discharge. Then plug it in without the clock battery. The machine should boot perfectly. Shut down, reinstall the clock battery, and now the system is fully functional. Macosxhints

    Reseat video? try another video card?
    My Step #1 is to always boot into Open Firmware (and do reset-nvram, reset-all, if you can't do that, you are sunk).
    Oh, and What do you see in verbose mode on startup?
