Command-r boot oddity

Hey Folks,
Im just about to install a second SSD in my mini and testing a few of my software options for re-installing OSX after creating a RAID. My problem is that when I hold command-r to boot into recovery the entire software language is Chinese characters!?!?!?!?! Which, unfortunately, I don't read.
Is there a way to change this language to English so I can navigate the menus to perform back-ups etc.
This may or may not be releveant but my Mac was a custom build shipped to me from China.
Thanks,
Kyle

To see if there is atleast a Recovery HD partition
execute the following command in terminal:
diskutil list
If the Recovery HD is present, it should list something
like this (the underlined one):
/dev/disk0
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.1 GB   disk0
   1:                        EFI                         209.7 MB   disk0s1
   2:                  Apple_HFS Server HD               249.6 GB   disk0s2
   3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3
   4:                  Apple_HFS Mountain Lion           249.5 GB   disk0s4
(I don't actually have Mountain Lion Installed, just a partition
set up for it when it is released)
If it does, try booting with the option key held down and
see if it shows up as a selection.

  • Invalid command in boot strap mode

    Hi All,
I am trying to install peoplesoft HRMS 9.1 with PT 8.51.
Firstly I encountered problems running grant.sql ,it showed that PSSTATUS, PSOPRDEFN, PSACCESSPRFL TABLE OR VIEW does not exist.(So i tried following "Using Data Mover, You can login in to the SYSTEM schema and EXPORT those tables (Using the 'EXPORT <RECORD>' instead of 'EXPORT *'). Then using Data Mover again, login to the SYSADM schema and IMPORT the data. NOTE: You will need two DMS scripts, one to export and one to import, as well as making sure you're using the right USER/PW combination" solution).
Secondly I can login to DATA MOVER using three combination of id's and psswds i.e system/oracle(original bootstrap mode id's) and PS/PS, SYSADM/SYSADM but the last two combinations also shows as bootstrap mode inside datamover.
Lastly i triesd to import the three tables from one schema to other by logging in to system/oracle as all three tables are present under this schema but when i run,
    set log C:\REF0001_EXPORT.log;
    set output C:\REF0001.dat;
    export PSSTATUS;
It shows the below error in logs,
Invalid command in boot strap mode
    Ended: Tue Jun 14 00:37:12 2011
    Unsuccessful completion
    Pls help!

    Thanks Nicolas,
So now what do you advise me to do...Do i need to start a fresh from scratch??..I beleive half of the tables present r under SYSADM and rest half under SYSTEM..So is there anything which i can do to import those??

  • Adding simple commands to boot under systemd

now that the rc.xxxx files are gone, where is the preferred location for adding a simple command one might like to execute upon boot, e.g. "echo 'search somewhere.somedomain' >> /etc/resolv.conf"
obviously there are several ways to do this, i'm just wondering what a systemd expert would do.

djg1971 wrote:olive:  please try to think a little more abstractly.  it is not for you to judge whose one-line commands are good, not good, stupid, etc.
Please read my posts more carefully. I never said that there is no valid reason to run a custom command at boot, I was just pointed out, in a part of my post, that your example was not the best one; that's all and I do not understand why it seems to affect you so much.
Anyway, forget about the bad example. I have tried to answer your original question the best as I could: to run a custom command at boot, you have to write a .service or use a general rc-local script but apparently you do not like the answer. What do you want now? I do not know if I am an expert but I have read enough of systemd to know there is no real other way: systemd take in charge every program that is run at boot via .services (or .target, etc...) files. So this is the way you have to follow to run a custom command at boot. Writing a .service file is not that difficult, maybe easier than to write a custom rc.somewhat file. Just take one existing .service file, understand what there is in it and modify it.
The post of ewaller give a method to create tempory files, often used by .service files (or the programs they launches); I was not under the impression that is what you really want.
As for the benefits of systemd, there are a few advantages. Anyway it is not me that I have decided to switch to systemd and discussing lengthy of the advantages of disadvantages of it would lead to nowhere.

  • Run 'echo' command at boot.

    Hey!
I am trying to run the following command at boot:
    "echo 10 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness"
So far I've tried in /etc/rc.local. That didn't work
    Any thoughts?

I can think of a primitive way to do it, but there's probably a better (and simpler) way than this...
Edit ~/.xinitrc and add your command above the "exec ..." line:
    $ nano ~/.xinitrc
    echo 10 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness &
    exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
The "&" at the end should be probably added in, for good measure. Backgrounding this task is (probably) a good idea, else your GNOME session (or whatever DE/WM you use) may not start.
Then edit your sudoers file, so that it doesn't ask for a password:
    $ sudo EDITOR=nano visudo
    Defaults editor=/usr/bin/nano
    root ALL=(ALL) ALL
    dspider ALL=(ALL) ALL
    dspider ALL=NOPASSWD: /bin/mount, /bin/umount
    dspider arch=NOPASSWD: /sbin/reboot, /sbin/poweroff, /usr/bin/pacman -Syu, /bin/echo 10 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
The easier way is to use the "-b" flag from gtk-redshift (inspired by f.lux):
    # pacman -S redshift
    $ gtk-redshift -l 44.42:26.10 -b 0.5 -g 0.8 -t 6500:3800 -m vidmode &

  • Command setenv boot-file ""

The command is putting "" in the field instead of making it blank. Any ideas?

    yep,
not sure why its doing that but if you want to set boot-file blank as per default, do:
    <ok> set-default boot-file <cr>
    note: not set-defaults<------

  • Command & R boot not working?

Ok so last week I bought and installed a new hard drive for my computer. I have a Macbook Pro from mid-2009 that had a 250GB Hard Drive. I replaced that with a 1TB Hard drive. After putting in tht 1 TB drive I turned on the computer and proceeded to use Time Machine to get all of my files, applications, etc back. I found out that my Time Machine was not backing up correctly and my newest Back up was from 10 months ago. I put the old 250 GB Hard Drive back in my computer, erased my time machine and created a new back up with everything up to date. Then I put the 1 TB back in my laptop and I have been trying to use Command + R to get to the disk utitlity so I can add my new up to date files, applications, etc but my Mac Book seems to be not recognizing Command + R and takes me straight to my desktop and everything looks like it did 10 months ago. What am I doing wrong?

So you're saying thatthe Mac is booting but to your normal startup? If so (from Apple's recovery tech page)
Note: If you see a login window or your own desktop and icons, it is possible that you didn't hold Command-R early enough. Restart and try again.

  • What is open firmware command to boot a Powerbook G4 from a CF card in the PCMCIA slot?

I have a Powerbook G4 Titanium with a bad motherboard that will no longer power the internal hard drive. I want to to install an OS and boot from a CF card in the PCMCIA slot. I understand this has to be done from Openfirmware, but I cannot figure out the command to do it.Does anyone know?

    Charles,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
What I've found so far is a non-Apple solution drivers.
I assume you've found the IO Xperts driver. (http://www.ioxperts.com/products/80211b_X.html)
Is there an Apple developed solution out
    there for third party cards?
Not exactly. Apple uses the Broadcom chipset. Some third-party manufacturers also use the Broadcom chipset and those cards would then work with the AirPort drivers. Here is a link to a list of wireless cards that note the chipset, OS and driver.
    http://home.earthlink.net/~metaphyzx/Wireless.htm
(Note: the list is dated August 2005.)
Manufacturers change their chipset so the version number of the card will make a difference. For example, the list shows that the Linksys WPC54G uses the Broadcom chipset. Well, that is true with version 1. Version 2 uses a Texas Instrument chipset and version 4 uses the Inprocomm chipset, which means these two do not work with the AirPort Driver.
I use the Linksys WPC54GS v1.0 (SpeedBooster) that uses Broadcom. It was plug 'n play.
It is hard to get an original Airport card today.
A quick search found a number of sellers, but they cost 2-to-3 times more than a third party card. (I didn't check eBay.) A third-party card also avails you to the faster option of 802.11g.
    Hope this helps.

  • Running commands at boot time (ex: amixer mute)

Alright, this is out of curiosity (and also a good reference for newbies)
What are the places you can put commands to run commands on startup, the respective init levels for that place, and whats the "right" way to do it?
    thx

Just a side question since this topic is here...can that be used to actually run a normal program? There's an interesting PowerPC emulator for the x86 architecture that I found that can successfully run OSX, and I was curious that if I installed it, whether or not I could possibly boot it on startup...

  • Command on boot - systemd tmpfile

    Hi.
I have a laptop with ATI/Intel hybrid graphics. I am never using the ATI graphics when in Linux, and i simply want to turn the ATI card off on boot for battery-life. I used to do this in Ubuntu, simply by putting the command:
    echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
    in /etc/rc.local
Now on Arch i have to go around making a tmpfile for systemd (by searching around it seems this is the "correct" way of doing this kind of stuff on boot), that will perform this action for me. However i find the syntax very difficult to understand, so if someone could help i would appreciate it. The tmpfile i have created so far (which ofcourse isnt working), is
    /etc/tmpfiles.d/fix_graphics.conf
    and contains the line
    w /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch - - - - OFF
Could anyone give me a pointer to what could be wrong? And just for future reference: What would one do in order to run a general command or script (for doing stuff more complex than writing a line to a file etc.) as root on startup with systemd?
    Thanks in Advance
    Esben

    Hi
According to the wiki you have to blacklist the radeon kernel module and then load it manually afterwards before executing the echo OFF >...
Also you've to enable debugfs in your fstab, all described in the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hy … ons_So_Far
As for systemd I do this with a little script that is called by a custom service file, wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … vice_files
I've added some After=, Requires= and Before= "tags" to the service file to make sure it executes at a good time, (After/Requires=systemd-user-sessions.service, to not execute too early and cause a kernel panic and Before=xinit.service to start it before X is started)
Edit: Alternatively you could use acpi_call from AUR to switch off the DGP completely. However this requires some similar steps to execute on boot.

  • Button/command for booting from external drive?

i have a PB and want to install and run linux fedora from an external drive on the PPC processer.
(don't worry, im not abandoning apple, i like them to much for that, i just want to see what linux is like)
now, i asume that the traditional method of going into sys prefs and choosing the startup disk with linux will not work cause it probably wont show up as its not OSX.
so does anyone know how i could boot from the external drive via a button or some commands in single users mode or something??
    cheers

    Kappy & rack0 tack0,
Thanks again for the responses ... this is along the lines of what I was looking for.
    Two questions:
    1. My understanding is that the Boot ROM does the POST and then the EFI portion selects which installed OS to access, and that is where I thought the Option key comes into play; giving the user the option of which drive to boot from instead of the EFI defaulting to the last used, and at this point the drives are just coming into play.
Based on that assumption, I thought that any system logging would be done solely on the drive which is being booted from.  If this is the case, then I'd think that booting from the ineternal drive and then checking the log files would result in no entries related to having booted from an external drive.  Is this incorrect?  I certainly do not know for sure ... again, this is simply an assumption on my part.
TL;DR  Is the boot activity logged by the ineranal drive no matter what, or will those log entries only appear on the drive being booted from?
    2. When I open Console, select All Messages, and type boot_time in the search box, I get no results.  What am I doing incorrectly?
    Thanks agian for your time!

  • How can I keep bootable partitions from showing when I want to use my usb stick without the option command at boot up?

Im using a usb stick with bootable diagnostic partitions and a extra partition for diags that run in the OS. When i want to use diagnostics from this extra partition on a mac thats already booted, I have to wait for all the bootable partitions to mount as well as the one partition that I need. Is there a way to hide these bootable partitions when using the usb drive as a storage device to run diags in the OS?
    Thanks

I think I may have to look into a redirect line in my htaccess file so that direct loads of my mp3's route through my website page.
If you do this you may find iTunes won't read the files, so I should test carefully on one file first if possible.

  • Solaris 10 boot oddity

I'm pretty new to Solaris, but I have a pretty solid background in unixy/linuxy type OSes. I've been getting into Java lately so I figured I might as well install Solaris just cuz'. So I have my root account, and my "poweruser" account that's simply a non-root admin type account. The thing is, when it boots up Solaris insists on setting the login screen to the world's biggest possible resolution, which in VMware is more of an irritation than anything else because both accounts of the system run in 1280x800. How on earth do I get the login screen to load up into 1280x800 and not....what appears to be 1600x1200?
    Thanks

I think you are right about doing the "exclude", but I couldn't decipher the information from that link... Notebook in question is a "Dell Latitude E6410" if that helps.
I got a bit more information from logging Re: Boot hang - Can I stop it looking for the wireless lan? but missed the line that probably contains the driver name!

  • Computer won't respond to single user or "C" command when booting up

The machine goes straight to the regular log-in screen. To repair, I have to redesignate my start-up disk. And I can't use applejack as I can't get into single user mode. I also tried to zap the PRAM, one of my favorite activities when I had an original I-Mac and was running OS 9, but I couldn't do that either. It does eject a CD while booting up when I hold down the right button on the mouse.
I've repaired the disk, repaired permissions, run the maintenance scripts, and checked my preference files. I've also redone keyboard set-up. I haven't done a hardware check.
I'm using a Macally ikey keyboard but the same thing happens with the apple-delivered keyboard that came with the machine. (I spilled coffee on the latter so its only partially functional.)
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Replace the keyboard with another MacAlly, or Apple wired keyboard.
    Don't drink near your keyboard.
    Use the startup manager:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
Limping along with a keyboard that has been shorted is only asking for something wrong to be typed at the wrong time.

  • [SOLVED] Running Two Commands at Boot

I've tried adding to the Startup Manager in Gnome and since that didn't work, I tried adding to rc.local to no avail. The only way I can run these scripts is manually through the terminal. The commands are to enable wireless and compiz:

    compiz.sh
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace ccp & emerald --replace &

They didn't work in rc.local since that loads before you log in (I think right after it finishes loading all the daemons). You'll need to run the full path (not using ~). Also, that won't help you with running GUI apps (like compiz, or the wicd tray icon). Also, if your sudo asks for a password that's probably why it doesn't work from Gnome startup (not sure about the compiz one, maybe try putting env before the command like "env LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace ccp && emerald --replace" And oh yeah, to run another command it's "&&", not "&" (you can also use a
