Run 'echo' command at boot.

Hey!
I am trying to run the following command at boot:
"echo 10 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness"
So far I've tried in /etc/rc.local. That didn't work
Any thoughts?

I can think of a primitive way to do it, but there's probably a better (and simpler) way than this...
Edit ~/.xinitrc and add your command above the "exec ..." line:
$ nano ~/.xinitrc
echo 10 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness &
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
The "&" at the end should be probably added in, for good measure. Backgrounding this task is (probably) a good idea, else your GNOME session (or whatever DE/WM you use) may not start.
Then edit your sudoers file, so that it doesn't ask for a password:
$ sudo EDITOR=nano visudo
Defaults editor=/usr/bin/nano
root ALL=(ALL) ALL
dspider ALL=(ALL) ALL
dspider ALL=NOPASSWD: /bin/mount, /bin/umount
dspider arch=NOPASSWD: /sbin/reboot, /sbin/poweroff, /usr/bin/pacman -Syu, /bin/echo 10 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
The easier way is to use the "-b" flag from gtk-redshift (inspired by f.lux):
# pacman -S redshift
$ gtk-redshift -l 44.42:26.10 -b 0.5 -g 0.8 -t 6500:3800 -m vidmode &

  • [SOLVED] Running Two Commands at Boot

    I've tried adding to the Startup Manager in Gnome and since that didn't work, I tried adding to rc.local to no avail. The only way I can run these scripts is manually through the terminal. The commands are to enable wireless and compiz:
    wireless.sh
    sudo wicd -foe
    /usr/bin/wicd-client
    compiz.sh
    LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace ccp & emerald --replace &
    Here's what I put in rc.local
    /etc/rc.local
    #!/bin/bash
    # /etc/rc.local: Local multi-user startup script.
    sh ~/Scripts/wireless.sh

    They didn't work in rc.local since that loads before you log in (I think right after it finishes loading all the daemons). You'll need to run the full path (not using ~). Also, that won't help you with running GUI apps (like compiz, or the wicd tray icon). Also, if your sudo asks for a password that's probably why it doesn't work from Gnome startup (not sure about the compiz one, maybe try putting env before the command like "env LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace ccp && emerald --replace" And oh yeah, to run another command it's "&&", not "&" (you can also use a

  • Adding simple commands to boot under systemd

    now that the rc.xxxx files are gone, where is the preferred location for adding a simple command one might like to execute upon boot, e.g. "echo 'search somewhere.somedomain' >> /etc/resolv.conf"
    obviously there are several ways to do this, i'm just wondering what a systemd expert would do.

    djg1971 wrote:olive:  please try to think a little more abstractly.  it is not for you to judge whose one-line commands are good, not good, stupid, etc.
    Please read my posts more carefully. I never said that there is no valid reason to run a custom command at boot, I was just pointed out, in a part of my post, that your example was not the best one; that's all and I do not understand why it seems to affect you so much.
    Anyway, forget about the bad example. I have tried to answer your original question the best as I could: to run a custom command at boot, you have to write a .service or use a general rc-local script but apparently you do not like the answer. What do you want now? I do not know if I am an expert but I have read enough of systemd to know there is no real other way: systemd take in charge every program that is run at boot via .services (or .target, etc...) files. So this is the way you have to follow to run a custom command at boot. Writing a .service file is not that difficult, maybe easier than to write a custom rc.somewhat file. Just take one existing .service file, understand what there is in it and modify it.
    The post of ewaller give a method to create tempory files, often used by .service files (or the programs they launches); I was not under the impression that is what you really want.
    As for the benefits of systemd, there are a few advantages. Anyway it is not me that I have decided to switch to systemd and discussing lengthy of the advantages of disadvantages of it would lead to nowhere.

  • Run shell commands using java program

    Hi guys,
    I am trying to run shell commands like cd /something and ./command with arguments as follows, but getting an exception that ./command not found.Instead of changing directory using "cd" command I am passing directory as an argument in rt,exec().
    String []cmd={"./command","arg1", "arg2", "arg3"};
    File file= new File("/path");
    try{
    Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process proc = rt.exec(cmd,null,file);
    proc.waitFor();
    System.out.println(proc.exitValue())
    BufferedReader buf = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(proc.getInputStream()));
    catch(Exception e)
    {e.printStackTrace();
    So can anyone please tell me what is wrong with this approach? or is there any better way to do this?
    Thanks,

    What gives you the idea that the process to execute is called "./command"? If this is in Windows, it is "cmd.exe" for example.It does not have to be cmd.exe in Windows. Any executable or .bat file can be executed as long as one either specifies the full path or the executable is in a directory that is in the PATH.
    On *nix the file has to have the executable bit set and one either specifies the full path or the executable must be in a directory that is in the PATH . If the executable is a script then if there is a hash-bang (#!) at the start of the first line then the rest of the line is taken as the interpreter  to use. For example #!/bin/bash or #!/usr/bin/perl .
    One both window and *nix one can exec() an interpreter directly and then pass the commands into the process stdin. The advantage of doing this is that one can change the environment in one line and it  remains in effect for subsequent line. A simple example of this for bash on Linux is
    import java.io.OutputStreamWriter;
    import java.io.Writer;
    public class ExecInputThroughStdin
        public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception
            final Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("bash");
            new Thread(new PipeInputStreamToOutputStreamRunnable(process.getErrorStream(), System.err)).start();
            new Thread(new PipeInputStreamToOutputStreamRunnable(process.getInputStream(), System.out)).start();
            final Writer stdin = new OutputStreamWriter(process.getOutputStream());
            stdin.write("xemacs&\n");
            stdin.write("cd ~/work\n");
            stdin.write("dir\n");
            stdin.write("ls\n");
            stdin.write("gobbldygook\n"); // Forces output to stderr
            stdin.write("echo $PATH\n");
            stdin.write("pwd\n");
            stdin.write("df -k\n");
            stdin.write("ifconfig\n");
            stdin.write("echo $CWD\n");
            stdin.write("dir\n");
            stdin.write("cd ~/work/jlib\n");
            stdin.write("dir\n");
            stdin.write("cat /etc/bash.bashrc\n");
            stdin.close();
            final int exitVal = process.waitFor();
            System.out.println("Exit value: " + exitVal);
    }One can use the same approach with Windows using cmd.exe but then one must be aware of the syntactic differences between commands running in .bat file and command run from the command line. Reading 'help cmd' s essential here.
    The class PipeInputStreamToOutputStreamRunnable in the above example just copies an InputStream to an OutputStream and I use
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import java.io.OutputStream;
    public class PipeInputStreamToOutputStreamRunnable implements Runnable
        public PipeInputStreamToOutputStreamRunnable(InputStream is, OutputStream os)
            is_ = is;
            os_ = os;
        public void run()
            try
                final byte[] buffer = new byte[1024];
                for (int count = 0; (count = is_.read(buffer)) >= 0;)
                    os_.write(buffer, 0, count);
            } catch (IOException e)
                e.printStackTrace();
        private final InputStream is_;
        private final OutputStream os_;

    I'm a newbie when it comes to Applescript and was wondering if someone could help with a basic request. I need to write a small script to do the following:
    1. Launch terminal

  • Using Echo Command in PowerShell Script for Configuration Item

    Hello All,
    Before you tell me to post my PowerShell question to the PowerShell Forum, please know that the PowerShell portion of my task works just fine. It is the SCCM portion of my task that keeps failing, so that is why I am here. To give some background...
    There are two servers in our SCCM test environment. Both the SCCM server and SQL DB server are 2012, patched and updated.
    Test servers in my Device Collection being used for running Baselines and Reports against are 2008R2 and 2012, patched and updated.
    I have created a Configuration Item that checks to see if the FTP Server Role Feature has been installed on a 2008 or 2012 server. To do the check, I am using the following PowerShell script:
    (get-windowsfeature -Name Web-Ftp-Server).Installed
    When I log into my 2008R2 and 2012 test servers, and run this command directly on the server, it will return a "True" if the FTP Server Role Feature is installed on either server, and a "False" if it is not installed. Basically,
    it works as advertised.
    When I setup my Configuration Item and then deploy my Baseline, or run a report against my device collection of test servers, SCCM will return a correct response (True or False) for the 2012 test server, but throws the following error for the 2008R2
    server:
    0x87df00329 application requirement evaluation or detection failed
    Google searches for this have not been very helpful.
    Now, when I created the Configuration Item and referenced PowerShell, the configuration screen has the following note:
    "Specify the script to find and return the value to be assessed for compliance on client devices. Use the echo command to return the script value to Configuration Manager."
    Since I did not include an echo command in my PowerShell script above, I figured that was my problem, so I did the following:
    Logging onto both of my test servers (2008R2 & 2012) I was able to successfully run the following PowerShell commands and get the expected responses of True or False:
    (get-windowsfeature -Name Web-Ftp-Server).Installed | echo
    (get-windowsfeature -Name Web-Ftp-Server).Installed | write-output (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh849921.aspx)
    (get-windowsfeature -Name Web-Ftp-Server).Installed | write-host (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee177031.aspx)
    However, when I use any of these PowerShell commands in my Configuration Item, NEITHER of my test servers returns a response to the SCCM server.
    When I check the report, both servers show as "Unknown" and when I click on the number 2 (as in 2 servers unknown), the following report page (List of unknown assets for a configuration baseline) has absolutely no data/information at all.
    So...I am at a loss.
    SCCM tells me to use an echo command to return a script value to Configuration Manager. The PowerShell scripts above, with the various echo related commands, work just fine on the servers themselves, but they return no information when run via SCCM.
    What am I missing?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance for your time.

    Sorry for my ignorance, but I don't understand. (I forgot to mention that I am new at both PowerShell and SCCM.)
    After I change the PowerShell script to add the echo/write-output/write-host cmdlet, I open the ConFig Item and "Clear" the PowerShell script and then re-add it. When I do that, it correctly shows the change in the ConFig Item.
    Next I open the Baseline, then open the ConFig Item within the Baseline to make sure the change is reflected there as well, which it is.
    I then deploy the Baseline to my Device Collection. After that, I run a report against the Baseline and Device Collection and it returns the "Unknown" result.
    If I open the PowerShell script and remove the echo/write-output/write-host cmdlet, then go through the rest of the process of updating and reporting, the result it returns changes, showing one server in compliance and the other server out of compliance,
    which leads me to think that all changes have taken correctly.
    Does that sound right? If I manually deploy the Baseline, is that the same as the client retrieving policies from the management point?
    Sorry to be so thick but I'm learning as I go.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Password keystrokes won't register in Run SQL Command

    I'm sorry if this has been answered before. I searched but I couldn't find this particular problem. I'm new to Oracle and I'm trying to install it on my computer. I'm used to using the Enterprise Edition that is available at school, so the Express Edition seems so much different.
    In case it is important, I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit). When I go to Start > All Programs > Oracle Database 10g Express Edition > Run SQL Command Line, I enter "connect", then it prompts me for a username. I enter "SYSDBA", then it asks me for a password and my keystrokes are not recognized. I tried to just go ahead and enter the password I created when I installed and press ENTER but that didn't work.
    I tried going to the Database Homepage, and I can log in with SYSTEM and my password, but my SQL commands and scripts (from school, that work with the Enterprise Edition) don't work. I get this pop-up window with the title "Enter Bind Variables" and the page itself has a SUBMIT button, but there is nothing else there.
    I'm totally lost. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    sysdba is a privilege, not a user. SYS and SYSTEM users have the DBA role privileges, SYS owns the catalog (database, tables, datafile, user and object info, all the metadata).
    The sys and system users can manipulate just about anything in the instance, using a connect sys as sysdba grants the ability to do a few more management tasks (i.e. shut down the database). Its best to only use those database logins when they're really needed (backups, startups, etc) and create other database users for all the other stuff. A quick way to get started is
    connect sys as sysdba; -- or connect / as sysdba;
    create user joe identified by joepasswd;
    grant resource to joe;
    grant connect to joe;
    grant create session to joeThe resource privilege is a quick way to get all the rights needed to create tables, indexes, procedures. There are a couple of rights in resource that most admins don't like to hand out to just anyone but it'll get the joe database user rolling.
    Now on to that "bind variables" dialog, the script that is running needs some input, take a look at the .sql file and there's probably an ampersand in there somewhere- maybe it wants a user name name, just have to figure out what it wants.
    And sqlplus does not echo characters typed in at the password prompt, that's normal.

  • Running Powershell command from PHP returns blank page

    Hi. :-)
    I have this script :
    <?php
    $q = shell_exec('powershell Get-Help');
    echo $q;
    ?>
    This works well and gives me output.
    But... When I change Get-Help with Get-VM it gives me blank page as ouput. I have simillar problems with other Hyper-V cmdlets.
    This is code 1:
    <?php
    $q = shell_exec('powershell Get-VM');
    echo $q;
    ?>
    This code gives me blank page.
    Code 2:
    <?php
    $q = shell_exec('powershell Start-VM 'Vm1'');
    echo $q;
    ?>
    This code gives me that it cannot find VM with that name.
    What's the problem, what to change in script or system settings.
    Note: All this commands WORK and gives me output when I run it from cmd
    Things that I did:
     1. Changed execution policy to Unrestricted
     2. Added 2<&1 at the end of shell_exec.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    I think we should run powershell as adminitrator to get VMs.
    Start-Process "$psHome\powershell.exe" -Verb Runas -ArgumentList '-command "Get-VM"'

  • Run powershell commands on a bat file

    Hello,
    I can call powershell on command line as below:
    C:\>echo I am in Command Shell
    I am in Command Shell
    C:\>powershell
    Windows PowerShell
    Copyright (C) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
    PS C:\> Write-Host I am in Powershell
    I am in Powershell
    PS C:\> exit
    C:\>echo I returned to Command Shell
    I returned to Command Shell
    But I want to create a bat file and run these commands in bat file. To do this, I copied and pasted same codes to Test.bat file:
    echo I am in Command Shell
    powershell
    Write-Host I am in Powershell
    exit
    echo I returned to Command Shell
    But after "powershell" command nothing worked as below:
    C:\>.\Test.bat
    C:\>echo I am in Command Shell
    I am in Command Shell
    C:\>powershell
    Windows PowerShell
    Copyright (C) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
    PS C:\>
    I want this output:
    I am in Command Shell
    I am in Powershell
    I returned to Command Shell
    How can I handle this problem.
    PS: I don't want to use powershell file (*.ps1).
    Thanks

    In my Test.bat file there are some commands. My Test.bat file is sth like this:
    @echo off
    echo I am in Command Shell
    powershell.exe
    Write-Host I am in Powershell
    $Var = "Some words"
    Write-Host My ID: $Id, String: $Var
    exit
    echo I returned to Command Shell
    There are other different commands, such as importing modules or setting variables or configuring computer settings,.... So, I think "powershell -command" is not applicable.
    In brief;
    Above codes work in command line.
    But when I use same codes in a batch file, nothing works in powershell. Result is sth line this:
    C:\>Test.bat
    I am in Command Shell
    Windows PowerShell
    Copyright (C) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
    PS C:\>

  • Invalid command in boot strap mode

    Hi All,
    I am trying to install peoplesoft HRMS 9.1 with PT 8.51.
    Firstly I encountered problems running grant.sql ,it showed that PSSTATUS, PSOPRDEFN, PSACCESSPRFL TABLE OR VIEW does not exist.(So i tried following "Using Data Mover, You can login in to the SYSTEM schema and EXPORT those tables (Using the 'EXPORT <RECORD>' instead of 'EXPORT *'). Then using Data Mover again, login to the SYSADM schema and IMPORT the data. NOTE: You will need two DMS scripts, one to export and one to import, as well as making sure you're using the right USER/PW combination" solution).
    Secondly I can login to DATA MOVER using three combination of id's and psswds i.e system/oracle(original bootstrap mode id's) and PS/PS, SYSADM/SYSADM but the last two combinations also shows as bootstrap mode inside datamover.
    Lastly i triesd to import the three tables from one schema to other by logging in to system/oracle as all three tables are present under this schema but when i run,
    set log C:\REF0001_EXPORT.log;
    set output C:\REF0001.dat;
    export PSSTATUS;
    It shows the below error in logs,
    Invalid command in boot strap mode
    Ended: Tue Jun 14 00:37:12 2011
    Unsuccessful completion
    Pls help!

    Thanks Nicolas,
    So now what do you advise me to do...Do i need to start a fresh from scratch??..I beleive half of the tables present r under SYSADM and rest half under SYSTEM..So is there anything which i can do to import those??

  • Running multiple commands in SCCM 2012 R2

    Dear Professionals
        I am really new in SCCM 2012 an i did alot of self study but there are a few things are really killing me ...
    how i run Running multiple commands in a task sequence
    Diskpart
    Sel Disk 0
    clean
    Exit
    And also in what step i should create this command line to solve error code 0x80070070
    Thank you

    i will try that .. but i have been told that command may not fix the problem i have ...
    is there another way to only format c:\ and leave the other partitions as it is ??
    i am booting from PXE and use the USMT TS is that correct or i must run it from software Center ??
    in the text file i only copy and paste the commands as it is or i should paste it in a specific form ?? like
    Diskpart
    Sel Disk 0
    clean
    Exit
    Or
    Diskpart & Sel Disk 0 & clean
    & Exit
    from what i read online i think the main problem is that the partition can not be wiped
    Thank you so much for your time and patience
