Commanding a parent movie clip

Hi guys, hope you can help. Firstly I'm new to Flash - please
be gentle!
I have 2 SWF files, A and B. A is a master page which loads B
into itself (for use as a menu) using loadmovie. In B there are
images that, when clicked, load an image into a programmatically
created mc in A . Loading and rotating this mc from B is fine,
however I cannot seem to, for example, apply filters to the mc in A
from B . Also I can't seem to draw into A either.
My ultimate aim is to have, when clicked in B, the mc in A
display the photo (this works). Then I want to draw a white
rectangle behind the mc and apply a drop shadow to it - the idea
being that it ends up looking like a polaroid.
I hope that makes sense!! Below is the code I am running
(using Flash 8).
Thanks a lot!
Dan

sorry had very less time i jus gave a glance to ur code bu
don have the sufficient time to do it all at my end n c whats the
prob...
but i guess i know where u r stuck ....c lockroot
property..when u load a file using loadMovie...using _root..here in
ur case its _level0..it refers to _root of the loaded movie n not
_root of the movie into which u loaded ...so use _lockroot property
first in the fla that u r trying to load..
i hope that ll solve the problem

• Movie clip stops playing for no reason

I am making a banner that has multiple movie clips sharing the same area, creating different rainbow effects when different areas (invisible buttons) are moused over.
First of all I couldn't figure out if there was a way to have one invisible button over the whole area that changed to a different colored effect with each mouse over (first mouse over the black and whites would change to reds, second would change it to blues, third would change it to browns, etc.). Since I couldn't figure this out I settled on creating three buttons covering a third of the banner each, so when the mouse passes over one button it changes to reds, over another button it changes to blues, over the third it changes to browns.
The effects are movie clips where each frame has another stripe changing color so it goes in a wave effect from one to the next, and then goes back to white and black in the same manner. The first frame of each movie clip I had to turn into a nested movie clip so I could turn the alpha to 0, since I was going to have these color effect movie clips on top of one another in the main timeline on different layers, and so you could see the effect even if that color layer wasn't on top. I used the same nested movie clip with zero alpha for the first frame of each color effect clip (reds movie clip, blues movie clip, etc), so I dont' know if that's an issue.
Anyway, it seemed to work fine for a while, but after working on it for a while longer (and not getting any further since I removed most of the changes I made), now when I test the movie the mouse over does not seem to work correctly. It works fine, seemingly, for the first time I mouse over each button, but in order to have it work again I have to mouse over the button twice, and then it will pause randomly during a part of the clip and I have to move my mouse back over for the movie clip to continue.
I can't tell if this is because of the overlapping movie clips, or because my buttons are messed up, or if my actionscript is messed up, or if the timeline has to be longer, or what. Currently the timeline is 55 frames, the same as each movie clip.
I put a movieclip_instance.stop(); command in the first frame of the main timeline, is there a better way to do this? Should I put the stop command in the movie clip itself?
Here is a section of my AS in the main timeline, this is my first time programming ever, in any language, and trying to learn from the internet is more difficult than I thought it would be.
redmovie.stop();
red_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, playRed);
function playRed(event:MouseEvent):void
redmovie.play();

I am not sure of what the problem is, so I don't know if this will help or not. One thing I might suggest is that you use gotoAndPlay(1) instead of play(). That way, if your movieclip is in the middle of playing it won't continue but will start from the beginning.
You could use one button to have the different movieclips play in sequence if you prefer that. You would just need to have some form of counter that keeps track of which is the next to play. Somethin like...
var mcCounter:uint = 0; // start at 0 since an array is being used to identify which movieclip to play
var mcs:Array = new Array(redmovie, bluemovie, brownmovie);
only_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, playMC);
function playMC(event:MouseEvent):void
mcs[mcCounter].play(); // tell the current mc to play
mcCounter += 1; // increment for the next mc
if(mcCounter == 3) mcCounter = 0; // reset the counter if it exceeds the array

• Target a movie clip inside a movie clip

When I go to the symbol editing mode on the first movie clip, I drag the instance of my 2nd movie clip to the stage. I then am duplicating my work, (it is over lapping) not sure what I am doing wrong here? and I am finding that my child movie clip is taking on the parent movie clip properties. How do I stop this from happening? I thought they are to remain independent? Any help is greatly appreciated. TY.

Will the child timeline be independent of the parent timeline. My pend_mc is the child and has taken on the hand_mc properties. Also why is there brackets around some and not the others? Thank you so much for your time.

• Buttons inside movie clip dont work

I have a simple HTML website with 5 buttons one of which, a movie clip, drops down 3 more buttons but the buttons dont always work. I get wierd issues for instance: whether I'm on the mcs page or another page completly the drop down buttons only work when Im on the parent movie clips page. When the buttons do work and you click on the button of the page your on they only work once then the whole issue repeats itself. Hopefully to clarify here is the code inside of the movie clip that directs the drop down buttons.
stop();
var cdButton:URLRequest= new URLRequest("character desin.html");
cd_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, cd);
function cd(event:MouseEvent):void
navigateToURL(cdButton,"_self");
var caButton:URLRequest= new URLRequest("concept art.html");
ca_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, ca);
function ca(event:MouseEvent):void
trace("ca_btn");
navigateToURL(caButton,"_self");
var dsButton:URLRequest= new URLRequest("draw sketch.html");
ds_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, ds);
function ds(event:MouseEvent):void
trace("ds_btn");
navigateToURL(dsButton,"_self");

From what I see you are trying to somehow program a Actionscript only iframe navigation. That will never work without an external Interface call to the Browsers Javascript. This is complicated stuff and surely not what you have in mind. If concept art, draw sketch etc. are all separate swf files, you should load them (instead of the html you embedded them in)

• Movie Clip Thumbnail Gallery

I'm using Flash 8 Professional
Here's the swf:
http://208.131.133.122/flash/
And my fla:
http://208.131.133.122/flash/scene.fla
(8MB sorry!)
Right now, when the mouse is in the same _x position as the
last thumbnail, the thumbnails slide gently to the left to reveal
more thumbnails then slide back to the right when the mouse moves
to the left again.
The problem is that they start sliding to the left whether or
not the mouse is over the thumbnail gallery. If the mouse is at the
bottom of the screen or the top of the screen and in the same _x
position as the last thumbnail, they will begin sliding.
I would like the thumbnails to begin sliding only when the
mouse hovers over the row of thumbnails and not when it is outside
that thumbnail area.
I added some actionscript to stop the movement of the
movieclip when the mouse is above the max or below the min _y
position of the clip; but, it does not work.
I don't really know what I'm doing. Can someone.... anyone...
tell me if this is something that can be done? And if yes, how?
Much thanks in advance.

I see that your first wooden button is a 'scroll down' button
which plays through
the length of the thumbnails. Do you mean you want to
replicate and reverse this on the third wooden button 'scroll up' ?
I'm just guessing here but I'd say you accually have your
thumbnail gallery scrolling down as a motion tween and your scroll
up button just has a 'goto previous frame' type function on it?
If the previous statement is true then I would suggest two
options for you.
1.) You take the scrolling functionality out of a timeline
and do it all with action script. This would be the most effective
way of doing it.
2.) Since you probably don't want to make serious edits to
that .fla. Here's another way. You have a boolean called 'is_rev'
and a function called 'play_backwards'. These are contained within
the same movie clip as your thumbnail gallery.
<!-- code
var is_rev:Boolean = false;
-->
Your third wooden button has these actions on it.
on(release)
this.is_rev = true;
this.prevFrame(); // This is to start the reverse loop;
Your first wooden button would have this on it.
on(release)
this.is_rev = false;
this.play();
Your second wooden button would have this on it.
on(release)
this.is_rev = false;
The function would be:
function play_backwards()
if(this.is_rev)
this.preFrame();
Now on every single frame of your scrolling gallery you need
to call this.play_backwards();
Please note the way I structured the coding assumes every
object is on the same timeline. If your buttons are in a
different/parent movie clip relative to your gallery movie clip,
your going to need to make sure 'this' is set relative to the two
objects. (i.e. on your button -> this.prevFrame(); would
probably be this.gallery.prevFrame(); )
A quick design note. If your buttons symbolize scrolling not
movement they should be reversed since as the thumbnail gallery is
moving upwards the user is scrolling downwards.

• Movie clips within movie clips

I have a movie clip (I'll call it B_mov) inside another movie
clip (A_mov). When you click a button in A_mov, B_mov plays. At the
end of B_mov, I used stop(); to make it stop. How do I return to
A_mov from there? I assume this is ActionScript territory.
This is coming from someone who has just taken his first baby
step into AS, navigating a single timeline via buttons, but I have
no idea how to move between different timelines.
Is this something that can be easily explained? If it's
really complicated, I don't want to burden anyone.
...Would I be better off finding an online AS tutorial? Can
someone please point me in the right direction?

supaaman,
> I have a movie clip (I'll call it B_mov) inside another

Okay.
> At the end of B_mov, I used stop(); to make it stop.
Makes sense so far. :)
> How do I return to A_mov from there? I assume this
> is ActionScript territory.
Well, you've already entered ActionScript territory by
programming your
button and adding that stop() action, so that's a good thing.
When you say
"return to A_mov," what do you mean? What would like like
A_mov to do at
this point?
> This is coming from someone who has just taken his
> first baby step into AS, navigating a single timeline
via
> buttons, but I have no idea how to move between

Timelines are synonymous with movie clips, and movie clips
are defined
by something called the MovieClip class. In fact, all objects
in
ActionScript are defined by corresponding classes (text
fields are defined
by the TextField class, arrays by the Array class, and so
on).
Thinking of it this way, you can consult the MovieClip class
entry of
the ActionScript Language Reference (the Help panel) to find
out everything
you need to know about movie clips. The characteristics of
the object are
called properties (you'll find references to width, height, x
and y
position, etc.). Things the object can do, such as stop(),
play(), and the
like, are called methods. Things the object can react to --
mouse clicks,
for example -- are called events.
You haven't stated what version of ActionScript you're
using, and the
exact wording of your code depends on that, but for example,
in ActionScript
2.0, you'll find that movie clips have a _parent property (in
ActionScript
3.0, it's simply parent). This property allows the movie clip
in question
to refer to its parent timeline (that is, its parent movie
clip). That
might be a step in the right direction for you, but I'm not
sure what you
have in mind.
Instead of simply invoking stop() in the final keyframe of
B_mov, you
might do something like this:
stop();
_parent.play();
... which invokes the MovieClip.stop() method on B_mov's
timline (because
that's where the reference to stop() appears: in B_mov's
timeline) and then
makes a reference to B_mov's parent via the MovieClip._parent
property.
That reference therefore invokes MovieClip.play() on A_mov.
The reason it works here is entirely because of the point of
view from
which the code operates: namely, keyframes in B_mov's
timeline. If your
code were all on the main timeline, your methods would be the
same -- stop()
and play() -- but your object references would be different.
Does that make sense?

• Accessing a Movie Clip in a parent Scene.

Setup:
*Scene 1:
- MovieClip1
*Inside MovieClip1:
- Actions:
stop();
next_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onNextButtonClicked);
previous_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onPreviousButtonClicked);
function onNextButtonClicked(e:MouseEvent):void {
if (currentFrame == totalFrames) {
gotoAndStop(1);
} else {
nextFrame();
function onPreviousButtonClicked(e:MouseEvent):void {
if (currentFrame == 1) {
gotoAndStop(totalFrames);
} else {
prevFrame();
(THIS CODE IS FOR MY NEXT AND PREV BUTTON TO CYCLE THROUGH MY PIECES OF WORK)
Then I have...
- Pieces of work Layer:
This includes each piece on a single frame, with a label name. (5 total frames on this layer)
Then I have....
- Next and Prev buttons on a layer
And Finally....
- The last layer in this scene has a background frame.
***** Now inside each frame containing each piece of work there is:
1st Layer = Actions
Containing this code: stop();
2nd Layer = This is the movie Clip that Fades my pieces of work in.
****** Inside this movie Clip of the piece of work fading in will contain:
1st Layer = Actions
Containing this code:
stop();
function openLabel(event:MouseEvent):void {
switch (event.currentTarget) {
case identity_cplogo_btn :
gotoAndPlay("cplogo_lv");
break;
identity_cplogo_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, openLabel);
2nd Layer = 1st frame blank, then frame 2-10 contains a movieclip with a label of cplogo_lv. This movie clip is the clip that has a large view of the image popup and darken the background. (Like a lightbox effect)
3rd layer = the logo which is a BUTTON. THis is located on the first frame and is called "identity_cplogo_btn." So when this is clicked it opens the large view.
*****Now....
When I click inside the movieclip that is the lightbox effect and go inside of it there is.....
1st Layer = Actions with the code of:
stop();
function openLabel(event:MouseEvent):void {
switch (event.currentTarget) {
case lv_close_btn :
gotoAndPlay("return");
lv_close_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, openLabel);
****After the actions keyframe, which is locate on frame 10, there is a label called "return" from frame 11-24. It is a blank label meaning there is nothing on it but the label name.
2nd Layer = the "Close" button which appears when the large view is opened and is located on frame 10 right underneath the action code.
3rd Layer = This contains the Large view of the logo, which I have made a movie clip for making it fade in then I paste reverse frames after right underneath the "return" label making it fade out.
4th Layer = Contains the Dark background that pops up which also fades in then underneath the "return" label it has its' reverse frames which are making it fade out.
SO... I have the code making it so that when the "Close" button is clicked it is going to the "return" label which is making everything fade out.
***************************** NOW WHAT I NEED TO FIGURE OUT *************************************
I need to know the code to be in the last movie clip I just explained and when I click the close button and it plays everything underneath the "return" label, THEN i need it to access the movie clip with the logo fading in so that it appears to go back to BEFORE clicking on the logo and expanding the view.
I understand that this code will be places right after the "return" label so that when the return phase plays it will then play the code making it go to this movie clip then it will stop.
I have tried
MovieClip(parent.parent).gotoAndPlay("return_2");
stop();
And giving the movieclip that has the logo fading in the "return_2" label name. THis allows it to go to that movie clip, however, it doesnt play it is just blank on the screen.
I also have tried accessing the movie clip after giving it an instance name, but it was doing the same thing.
Help PLEASE!

I actually tried a post earlier that was simplified, but I think the setup of scenes might be important....anyways, here it is.
Setup:
Scene 1 > MovieClip1 > MovieClip2 > MovieClip3 > MovieClip4
Explanation:
I am in MovieClip4, in which I have a "Close_btn" that when clicked, it takes you to label "return" (still inside MovieClip4), which then plays the movie clips in the layers below label "return." What I want it to do is....Once label "return" plays, I need the code to make it go into "MovieClip2" and play a movie clip with the "Instance" Name of "Logo_1."
I have tried this by setting a label name above the movie clip and referencing the label, however, it does access that movie clip, but it doesnt play it...It is just blank.
Hope this is understandable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For the sake of space, I'll leave out all the package declarations and class declarations and just talk about the functions.
First, the Game class, it has two functions. The first one is the constructor function and it launches at the beginning of the game: First the Game function:
public function Game():void
//Game code goes here
}//Game
We want to listen for someone to click the mouse on the MenuPage, so lets create a new MenuPage and add a listener to the button contiained within it.
public function Game():void
menuPage = new MenuPage;
menuPage.startButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, startGame);
addChild(menuPage);
}//Game
You will notice that before I declared a variable var menuPage:MenuPage, but that's all I did was declare it. I didn't really make a new instance of it, I just set aside space for it. In the first line within the Game function, I'm actually turning that variable into a new instance of a MenuPage.
We don't have a picture of this imaginary menuPage instance, but lets' assume that in our MenuPage MovieClip in the library, we created a SimpleButton called startButton. Here, I'm adding an EventListener that patiently waits for someone to click that button. Once we receive that event, Flash is told to call the startGame function.
As you get better at this, you'll get into custom events, and the eventListener for the button will exist in the MenuPage class file, or even in another class file that you create just for the button. Something like StartButton.as But for now, we can do it as above.
Now the startGame function:
public function startGame(evt:MouseEvent):void
//Remove the start Page
//Add the zombie
//Add the gun
}//startGame
And we'll replace those comments with real code. It follows along with what we just did above.
public function startGame(evt:MouseEvent):void
zombie = new Zombie;
addChild(zombie);
gun = new Gun;
addChild(gun);
And we also want to clean up some by removing the menuPage, and throwing out the eventListener.
public function startGame(evt:MouseEvent):void
zombie = new Zombie;
addChild(zombie);
gun = new Gun;
addChild(gun);
menuPage.startButton.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.Click,startGame);
removeChild(menuPage);
}//startGame
Now our Game class is complete.
The Zombie Class
public function zombieWalk(evt:Event):void
this.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,zombieWalk);
this.x = this.x + 10;
}//zombieWalk
Notice we've added a function to the Zombie Class.
The first function adds an EventListener to the zombie. We can use the word this and actionScript knows we're talking about the zombie that the class is written for. This listener fires off every frame. If our FLA file is set to 12fps, then 12 times every second it will call on the zombieWalk function.
The zombie walk function moves the zombie 10 pixels to the right every time the function is called.
On a more advanced level, you'll want to add animation in the MovieClip to move the zombie legs. You'll also want to use Timer events to space out how often the funtion fires and not ENTER_FRAME events. And you'll want to use a static constant to establish how far the zombie moves. We have it now set to 10 pixels, but that can get irritating if we want to change that value later. But again, baby steps.
And finally, the Gun class
public function Gun():void
this.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fireGun);
}//function
public function fireGun(evt:MouseEvent):void
this.gotoAndPlay(2);
}//fireGun
First we add an EventListener for when someone clicks on the gun. Once this happens, the listener calls on the fireGun function.
The fireGun function takes advantage of the frames within the Gun MovieClip. Say we have three frames in the Gun MovieClip. The first is just a picture of the gun. The second is the gun with a flash coming out of the nozzle. And the third is the gun at rest again. The line this.gotoAndPlay(2) sends the gun to the second frame with the flash graphic.
For this to work, each frame in the Gun MovieClip has to have some stop and play commands.
But.. you said no code on our timeline!! Liar!
I know. This is the exception. You will need basic stop() commands and gotoAndPlay commands to loop animations. Any MovieClip that has more than one frame will need something to control it.
So our Gun MovieCLip has the following:
Frame 1: stop();
Frame 2: no actionScript... and I mean nothing, not even the words, "no actionScript"
Frame 3: gotoAndStop(1);
This will loop the gun to the beginning and wait for the next time the user clicks the gun.
Advanced features of the Gun class might include a Bullet.as sub-class that creates a bullet MovieClip to fly across the screen. Sound to play when the shooting takes place. Object collision detection to see if the bullet hits the target. And a means by which a custom event will tell the Game.as class that a zombie has been hit and it should be removed from the stage.
As you go down the rabbit hole of ActionScript 3, you will find yourself at a point where it's just a matter of getting the syntax right for all the built in functions and classes. Arrays, Loaders, casting variable types.. all that stuff will come.
I hope this has been helfpul. It's been on my to-do list for a long time. When I first started out, no one could provide me with basic answers for how all these classes and whatnot worked. After teaching myself AS3 for 2 years and reading a gabillion books, I think I've gotten to a point where I'm pretty comfortable with it all.

• Playing multiple movie clips one after other on main timeline

Excuse the probably simple question but I'm just starting off with Flash.
I have imported a few video trailers directly into flash and saved them as movie clips.
I want to be able to insert these movie clips onto the main timeline and play them one after the other, repeating once they have all played.
On the main timeline I have set a layer for each clip and a keyframe where the clip is inserted for each layer.
When I go to play the flash file, it is showing the first frame from each movie file and then moving to the first frame of the next movie file.
What do I need to do to make flash play the entire movie file in that specific frame before moving to the next frame where the next movie file is and playing all that movie?
Sorry for what is probably a simple thing to ask.
thanks

Create an actions layer on the main timeline and place stop(); commands on that layer in each frame where a movieclip resides.
Within in each movieclip, at the end (last frame) you want to tell the main timeline to play(); so that it moves to the next frame (where it will stop because of the stop() commands you add).
So at the end of each movieclip you will put either:
for AS2:  _parent.nextFrame();
for AS3: MovieClip(parent).nextFrame();
For the last movieclip in the lineup you will replace nextFrame() with gotoAndStop(1);

• Movie Clip "Play" problem

Dear all
I have a singl movie clip which has an embedded video inside.
I use the following actionscript commands to stop and play it
onClipEvent(load) {
stop();
onClipEvent(mouseDown) {
play(); }
onClipEvent(mouseUp) {
stop(); }
The problem I face is that the movie clip should play when
clicked by mouse ONLY on movie clip area which occupies only a
small part of the stage. However, when I click the mouse ANYWHERE
on the stage the movie starts to play.
Any hint? Do I need to control the coordinates of the mouse ?
Thanks
Hagop

sorry, I made a mistake- i had not re-saved my files, so it
worked but not the way i thought...
my code, based on your response is attached- however it
doesnt work...
mcOther is a mc within the "child" - other.swf.
this code needs to be in the "parent" swf...
thank you.

• How can I move clips from one library to another? Clips are still in original drive and not in new drive.

I am using iMovie 10.0.7 on a 1-week old iMac 27" running Yosemite 10.10.2. I migrated from iMovie 9 on a 2008 iMac running Snow Leopard and updated the libraries and events, etc.
I have two external drives connected via USB. I want to move / consolidate the library and clips from one of the external drives to the new iMac's 3TB fusion drive. This is to make room on the external drive to run Time Machine backups.
Apple's instructions on managing libraries and moving/copying clips/events tell me to drag to move between libraries and to Option-drag to copy. However, simply dragging only copies. I find that if I Command-drag the events/clips, I can "move" them. But when I look outside iMovie in the Mac OS X Finder, the event folders and clip files themselves are still sitting in the original drive.
I'm very perplexed as to how to really move the clips and event structure. Should I manually copy the clips and event folder structure outside of iMovie? I worry I will mess up iMovie's internal record keeping and folder structure information.
Thanks in advance.

Ahh, Ok. I actually had to go to Lynda.com to watch a training video of this highly bassackwards maneuver, but now I have it. In other words, while the intuitive thing is to make a new event to hold the clip you want and then open the old event and drag the clip into it's new event, the only way to accomplish this maneuver is to NOT create a new event, but rather, go to the clip AFTER the one you want to move, select it and then Right-Click on it and select SPLIT EVENT BEFORE SELECTED CLIP (or go to FILE>SPLIT EVENT BEFORE SELECTED CLIP). Then you wait a few seconds while the program thinks a bit (no feedback it is doing this - just a pause) and then it automatically creates a new event with the clip you wanted. Now just double-click the new event and name it something meaningful.
Thanks for your help!

• Flash CS4 Link to a Movie Clip from inside another Movie Clip

I am working on a Flash CS4 project which has 5 buttons with 5 corresponding movie clips all on the main timeline. Everything in functional so far.
My problem is this: I want to be able to mouse click on a particular word in the text inside movie clip 4 ("mc4") and have it link to movie clip 3 ("mc3") (on the main timeline).
I've tried many things, and I can't get it working.
I have tried to highlight the word then link it to "mc3" in the properties panel where it says link (I successfully linked to an email address and to an outside website in other parts of the project)....
I tried to link it in the properties panel to "mc3", I tried & "parent.mc3", "root.mc3";
Linking it this ways seems to be the simplest, logical thing to do, but I don't know what kind of prefix it needs.
Then, I tried making the word (inside mc4) an invisible button (button6) then linking it to the mc3, with it's actionscript in the main timeline with the other button functions.
I tried duplicating mc3 and duplicating invisible button 3 and moving it's hotspot to over the word.
I tried putting a copy of mc3 and the button inside mc4, with the actionscript also inside mc4.
I tried duplicating mc3 and calling it mc6, and putting that inside mc4, with the actions back on the main timeline, and tried again with the actions inside mc4.
I tried with mc6 and invisible button 6 on the main timeline, but that doesn't seem possible.
I tried using this code from Adobe Actionscript 3.0:
button6.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, startMovie);
function startMovie(e:MouseEvent):void
this.play("mc6"); [and I also tried with "mc3"]
Nothing works!! Please, I would appreciate any suggestions!!
Thanks,
Suzanne

If I limit my attention to the second sentence of your posting, then I suggest the following (borrowing from the rest of your posting)...
If that invisible button6 is inside MC3 (on MC3's main timeline), atop the word you are trying to link to the movieclip, and you just want to make mc4 play by clicking that invisible button6, then assign the following code to the button6 inside MC3...
button6.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, startMovie);
function startMovie(e:MouseEvent):void
MovieClip(this.parent).MC4.play();
If I missed, then I missed following your explanation.

• How to play movie clips for a certain amount of time only

Hello everyone, I think I have a relatively basic question here but I can't figure it out. I have a movie clip loaded using action script 3 at the start of my animation, I want ito to end at the 120th frame. But I can't use the stop(); command because it will also stop the rest of my animations from the 121st frame onwards. So my problem is, how can I stop the movie clip without stopping the rest of my animations?
Thank you in advance!

I don't think I have codes that load the swf, but I've sent you the code that I would like to stop. Thanks!

• How do I assign a mouseclick event Listener to a simplebutton already nested in a movie clip when it's dropped on stage?

I'm trying to assign a mouseclick event listener to a simplebutton nested within a movie clip's later frames, starting at frame 2 and up. This card, however, is not added to my game until later, and when the player clicks on it/turns it over.
There are four files involved in this program:
#1 The main actionscript file, which corresponds to
#2 my dreamQuester .fla file.
#3 my artifactCard file movieClip's corresponding .as file,
#4 my combo1.as file corresponding to a an instance of a simpleButton named combo1 that is already
nested --and this instance is already named-- inside/as a child of said artifactCard movieclip.
What I've done so far isn't working:
In my main dreamQuester.as file, when a player clicks on an artifactCard, its MOUSE_DOWN event
listener takes them to this function (clickArtCard), where the trouble is at:
// player clicked on the artC card--which is a child of posArt1 on stage--to turn card over:
function clickArtCard(a_event:MouseEvent) {
var thisArtCard:artifactCard = (a_event.target as artifactCard);
thisArtCard.gotoAndStop(unclickedArt1); // go to frame number of artifact
// card where combo1 button is.
thisArtCard.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,clickArtCard);
thisArtCard.buttonMode = false;
trace("combo1.combo is:" + combo1.combo);
trace("posArt1.artC.combo1 is:" + posArt1.artC.combo1);
posArt1.artC.combo1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, comboClickedWHO);
when the artC card--the static public instance of artifactCard--is clicked, it only gets to the
trace("posArt1.artC.combo1 is:" + posArt1.artC.combo1); which returns this error message:
TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.
at MethodInfo-61()
So do how would I declare a static public variable of this simpleButton at the start of my main .as
file to make it defined to get a mouseDown actionListener into my pre-existing-and-named-instance
combo1 simpleButton?
perhaps there is a way, while the debug movie program is running, to click on the simpleButton and see exactly
what it's parent heirarchy is, to see the name of all parents above the simpleButton incase they are
different then what I think?
(just in case, I was hoping to squeeze a zip file containing these files to be less than 9MB incase someone was willing to look at my files to see what I've done so far, but 9 megs is just too big! even though all graphics I've imported where turned into vector graphics with trace bitmap. I wish there was a way to check the file size of each symbol in Flash CS4, here...)
Thank you so much for any help!
~Ethan

Just use a
stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, keyPressed);
function keyPressed(event:KeyboardEvent):void {
//trace(event.keyCode);
if(event.keyCode == ???){
// play the sound
Where I show the "???" you would replace with the keyCode for the key you want pressed for that sound. To determine the keyCode you can use the trace line that I have commented out.
Note that when testing in Flash you often need to disable the keyboard shortcuts in the Flash Player in order to be able to use alot of the keys. You will find this option in the Control menu options in the player.
