Compatibility of Solaris 8 vs. Solaris 10.

We are getting core dump randomly in Solaris 10 box. The bin(s) & lib(s) are generated (compiled) in Solaris 8 box.
a) Are the Solaris 8 bin&lib(s) are compatible in Solaris 10.
b) If not in direct Solaris 10 box, but atleast can we try with container in Solaris 10 box.
Can you please let me know where the SunMicro stands on these compatibilities?
I guess the jar/class files shouldn’t be problem but mainly it’s about C/C++ files.
Please let me know if the core and/or box architecture details will help. :-)

A mismatch between the compile-time directives on the build machine and the execution environment seems like a promising place to look. The elf_xx calls in particular suggest your code and your platform don't see eye-to-eye on the section mapping of the process to virtual memory.
Of course, it's also a cool place to look, so there may be a bit of tunnel-vision in that estimation.
If root causes interest you, this seems like an outstanding opportunity to use DTrace and speculative tracing. Using the fbt provider, you could trace the elf_* calls of your application. You could discard any records upon exit from the given function -- those which work fine -- but commit to recording buffer the calls that don't finish. So long as you don't commit to the tracing buffer the data you can't use, the probe effect (i.e. performance overhead) should remain small.
The OpenSolaris DTrace wiki has a good chapter on speculative tracing. There are also three example scripts in /usr/demo/dtrace that use speculative tracing: errorpath.d, specopen.d, whoqueue.d. These should give you a good sense of how to proceed if you want to nail down root causes.

Michael

I have Solaris 9 installed and I am unable to use the Solaris Management console.
I have managed to start it:
    /etc/init.d/init.wbem start
    /etc/init.d/init.wbem status -> shows it's running
But if I try browser with the link http:// host:898, I have got the following error:
"A web version of the Solaris Management Console is not available at this time."
    any Idea why?

Are you running Trusted Extensions? What patch cluster are you on? What toolbox are you opening?

Oracle Instant Client was a "feature" introduced with Oracle 10g. There is no 9i version.
Code that links with Oracle 9i libraries should be able to be linked with Instant Client 10gR2.
The resulting application will be able to connect to databases from Oracle 8.1 onwards.

Is there anybody who can tell me the difference between them?? And does anyone have any experience with an easy to use solar charger than can be used to charge a laptop battery? I'm trying to help a friend out and i've got no experience with these.
    I really appreciate, thanks!

  • Is there a way to undelete files in solaris, either solaris 8 or solaris 10

    Hi Everyone,
Want to check with you whether any option available to undelete a file in solaris8 or solaris10. Please let me know.
    Thanks everyone,
    Lakshmana Immidi.

Maybe, but mostly no. If you do a Google search you will see many ways to undelete files, but all are based on a number of assumptions:
    1. You are not using ZFS. Most of these methods work with UFS or ext2/ext3.
    2. You stop immediately upon accidentally deleting the file. A multiuser system is continually generating files, whether from users or from temporary processes that are running all the time. Any disk blocks your original file was on may get over-written very quickly by new files. Inodes of the files may get re-used, and inodes don't contain the name of the file they reference.
If using ZFS on Solaris 10, using snapshots is the best way to preserve user files. You can roll back to a previous snapshot, or even just go to the directory the snapshot is stored in and copy the file over. You can set up a script to take snapshots at various times to ensure you always have a fairly recent copy. You can also take incremental snapshots so you don't have to copy tons of data with each snapshot.

  • LDAP over SSL for Solaris 9 / Solaris 10

I am thinking about pam.conf file or ldapclient's configuration file, any suggestion?

I have now sat down and looked at your suggestion and I am pretty certain we can't implement it ... :( I was hoping it was just going to be configuration files that were copied (maybe a naive hope, but there you go!) This system is going to be deployed as a live service for a government agency so I do not think we can, in all good conscience, have binaries from two different OS releases residing on the same server as it will make the system nigh-on non-patchable.
Let's hope Sun have somethig constructive to say about our issue which, I am slowly beginning to think, is related to the password.
If I su to the test AD user we have whilst logged in as a root user (which does not, of course, prompt for a password) it all works nicely - home directory, shell, the id command gives all that is expected of uid and gid. Now, should I be in a as a non-root user and try the same I get prompted for a password and it all fails - despite me providing what should be the correct password.
If I do a getent for the user the returned data has a blank for the password field (as opposed to the usual x).
I think that somewhere, somehow, in the transmission of data that the password is getting a level of encryption that the AD is not setup to unravel. The packets are all encrypted through ldap (we are using tls simple) but what of the password within the packet? Does anything encrypt that first, and if so, does AD know how to decrypt it?

  • Accurate answer for Solaris 9 - Solaris 10 features

    Hi Guys,
We are about to make decision migrating from solaris 9 to solaris 10 but I could not find an accurate answer what differences exist between these versions. I know, there are features mentioned in solaris 10 web page but it is not enough. In an conversation with Chris Ratcliffe, he mentioned there are new 600 features added to Solaris 10. So what are they? I can't understand Why there isn't an informative whitepaper or that kind of article for differences between Solaris 9 - 10 from Sun.
If you can please point out something different then Solaris 10 New Features page, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks.

Very good question. I will try to answer.
    1. Performance : Any application which run on Solaris 9 if you installed on Solaris 10 , you will get 30 % performace gain.
    2. You also get following benefit.
    a. Zfs -- this file system eliminates need of volume manager and easy to use it.
    b. Zone: You can create virtual server inside your server. You reboot the that server. Some limitation exists but nice feature.
    c. Dtrace : You can find point of problem for your application the help of dtrace. Some expertise is needed to use this.
    d. Firewall : Firewall included with this OS.
    e. SMF : This feasure keeps centralised information about all services. ( Complicated for new user. ) This are few one.
    3. Some new system bundeled with Solaris 10 and they do not support Solaris 9. ( T1000 and T2000 )
I am using solaris 10 since last 1 year and are happy about it. But upgradation need to planned carefully. Go for only ( and only ) June 2006 release.
    Best Luck.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong ?

Me too! I'm actually installing Solaris 10 x86 from a Jumpstart server (ultra 10) onto v20z servers. I'm getting and IP address from the Jumpstart server and snoop says it's looking for bootevn.rc which I can't find under /tftpboot. I have found an article that states you must have rpld running and it's not. This could be my issue.

  • Solaris 8 binary compatibility - Solaris 7

    Greetings:
    and TIA.
Also apologies if this issue has been covered via some other resource.
    Note: Hardware Utilized - Sparc
We have recently ported our 4.2 Forte C++/C code successfully from Solaris 6 to Solaris 8. As part of that port, we upgraded the compiler resources from 4.2 to 6.0. With these new binaries we have encountered the following runtime issue:
Solaris 8 code runs fine on Solaris 8, however these same executables dump core on Solaris 7
To troubleshoot this, we built the same code on a Solaris 7 platform. These executables ran fine on both Solaris 7 and Solaris 8
My question: Are Solaris 8 binaries incompatible with Solaris 7? Is there any online documentations which provides an overview/explanation for this behavior?
    Regards:

In general there is forward compatibility for applications between Solaris releases. There is no official backward compatibility. This means you
should always compile on the oldest release of
Solaris that you expectto run on. So, if you need
to run on Solaris 5.6, 7 and 8, compile on Solaris 5.6.
There is a tool called appcert which is shipped with
later versions of Solaris 8 and can be downloaded from:
    http://www.sun.com/developers/tools/appcert/download.html
That will give you a good idea of the forward and backward compatibility of your application. General ABI information can be found at:

  • Solaris 8 backwards compatibility

    Hi,
I am about to begin some java development for the Solaris 8 platform on SPARC, and am setting up a dev server. I'd rather install Solaris 9 for reasons of general superiority, but are there any reasons that compiled java binaries from v9 would have problems running on a v8 platform when its deployed? It won't be particularly low-level design: just some database access, tcp/ip SOAP messaging, and XML manipulations.
    thanks

  • Backward Compatability solaris 10 to Solaris 9

    I am trying to mix
executables compiled on Solaris 10 with C++ compiler 5.8
with shared libraries compiled on Solaris 9.
On solaris 9 it says libm.so.2 file not found.
what may be the solution to run the executable from solaris 10 to solaris 9

Running binaries built in Solaris 10 platform, on Solaris 9 or earlier versions, is not "backward" compatibility. It is the other way round ie., running executables built on earlier versions of Solaris, on Solaris 10.
I believe libm.so.2 was introduced in Solaris 10; and is not available for Solaris 9. If you want to run your executable on both 9 & 10, you have to build it on Solaris 9, but definitely not on 10.
