Compile error difference, ojc vs javac

We recently upgraded to JDeveloper 10g from 9i. Overall, definitely a big improvement, but I'm running into one very annoying issue.
We have a customer who is obsessive about avoiding vendor ties, so everything we do has to be based purely on Sun's JVM. To that end, we compile using javac rather than ojc. This works, but has a few annoyances. For one it seems to take forever for JDeveloper to start javac - upwards of 15-20 seconds in some cases.
That I can live with, but the bug that's starting to drive me completely nuts is that the detail for compiler errors, especially "cannot resolve symbol", is different between the two compilers. Under ojc, I get all the detail you'd expect: The unknown symbol, even the column it appears in. But using javac, all I get is the line number and a "cannot resolve symbol" message. This makes it a lot harder than it should be to find the problem.
I don't get this using ojc, or Eclipse, or 9i, or even javac on the command line. It's very annoying, and quickly pushing people to want to go back to 9i, or even move to Eclipse. Is there a setting we're missing here?
Our current target is JDK 1.4.2.
Thanks,
- KEA

Hi Manoj,
I had the same problem.
This is what worked for me:
I'm running Win2k.
So, in C:\WINNT\system32 I found the following files
javac.exe
javaw.exe
java.exe
I removed them all, since I have the jdk pointed in the right classpath in my environment variables.
Once this was deleted. It worked fine!
I hope this helps.

  • Ojc autobox compiler error?

    Hi,
    JDeveloper 10.1.3.3.0
    compile with \jdev\lib\ojc.jar -source 1.5 -target 1.5 etc
    The following pseudo code compiles with "javac" but does not compile with JDev ojc compiler; displays the errror "incompatible types; found long, required: interface java.io.Serializable".
    long id = 56L;
    Object o = session.get(MyClass.class, id);
    The method signature is: get(Class clazz, Serializable id);
    Shouldn't the ojc compiler be 'autoboxing' the primitive long into the Long wrapper as per the javac compiler?
    Thanks for any suggestion.
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
    This OJC bug is scheduled to be fixed in a future release of the 10.1.3 series.
    If you can upgrade, please use the 11.1.1 OTN4 preview release, this bug is fixed in that release.
    Alternatively, you can use a Long object instead of a long primitive.

  • How do I see javac compiler errors during JSP precompile?

              I played with all the options that "weblogic.jspc"
              supports. I couldn't get the javac compiler errors to
              show up when there is a problem with the generated
              Java file.
              Interestingly the same JSP when compiled automatically
              by the weblogic server, the javac errors show up in
              the output.
              Any tricks? or ideas?
              thanks

              In WL 5.1, earlier service packs would sometimes not show the errors. Get sp6 or later.

    Please could somebody help me out with this? Basically I am not able to understand how to deploy the EAR file created under the MyWork folder under jdeveloper\jdev to the applications folder of j2ee\home. I am new to both EAR deployment as well as web services and would like to get a good understanding of the working of a web service which includes SOAP components and the like.
    Any help with regards to building and deploying a web service on standalone OC4J would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

    Initially I followed the following steps to start up OC4J:-
    Settings :-
    1) Jdeveloper is setup under C:\Lester\Testing as Jdev10.1.3 folder
    2) I downloaded the extended oc4j zip folder and unzipped it under a new folder oc4j at the location C:\Lester\Testing\Jdev10.1.3
    Steps followed to run oc4j and deploy application
    1) Setup a standalone oc4j from the jdeveloper ide giving C:\Lester\Testing\Jdev10.1.3\oc4j as the root folder for oc4j.
    2) While doing step 1 added password and deployed it. Changed server.xml under C:\Lester/Testing/JDev10.1.3/oc4j/j2ee/home/config
    to include the following:-
    <shared-library name="global.libraries" version="1.0" library-compatible="true">
    <code-source path="C:\Lester/Testing/JDev10.1.3/oc4j/j2ee/home/applib"/>
    </shared-library>
    AND
    <java-compiler name="javac" in-process="false" options="-J-Xmx1024m -encoding UTF8" bindir="C:\Jdeveloper\jdk" extdirs="C:\Jdeveloper/jdk" />
    3) Opened a command prompt and went to the location C:\Lester\Testing\JDev10.1.3\oc4j\j2ee\home and ran the following command:-
    --> java -jar oc4j.jar
    4) Deployment: Then I deployed my primewebservice application from command prompt at C:\Lester\Smart Cylinder\Example code\prime\PrimeNumberService>
    using:-
    --> java -jar C:\Lester/Testing/JDev10.1.3/oc4j/j2ee/home/admin.jar ormi://172.20.13.164:8888 oc4jadmin welcome -deploy -file PrimeNumberService.ear -deploymentName DocStyleWebService
    5) Web Binding: Then I bound my primewebservice application from command prompt at C:\Lester\Smart Cylinder\Example code\prime\PrimeNumberService>
    using:-
    --> java -jar C:\Lester/Testing/JDev10.1.3/oc4j/j2ee/home/admin.jar ormi://172.20.13.164:8888 oc4jadmin welcome -bindWebApp DocStyleWebService PrimeNumberService_web http-web-site /docws
    6) Steps 4 and 5 went through without error.
    7) However when trying to access the web service using the following link I get the standard HTTP 404 (Page not found) error:-
    http://localhost:8888/docws/prime
    This was before I tried deploying the web service through jdeveloper IDE.
    I had tried the document web service given at the following link:-
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/sample_code/tech/java/codesnippet/webservices/docservice/index.html
    from the web services how to links
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/sample_code/tech/java/codesnippet/webservices/index.html
    Please could somebody help me out? Also periodically I recieve the ojc.exe not found error when trying to deploy an application using jdeveloper ide. There are two conflicting jdeveloper versions one comes with this exe and one without.

  • BUG: Internal compilation error, terminated with a fatal exception

    After downloading the new Oracle JDeveloper 10g production, migrating all my projects, everytime I try to make/rebuild any file or package, I get the following error:
    Internal compilation error, terminated with a fatal exception
    This happens if use either JAVAC or OJC.
    Regards,

    I think the error reporting is wrong, since dbMessages.java is a translated SQLJ file, and the specified method exists in the SQLJ file around that line number - and not in the java file resulting from the translation.
    Note that line 2958, in the SQLJ file, was the simple MessageHeader.Iter messageHeaderIter; line.
    The definition of this class, is in a SQLJ file, which content is:
    package telemessage.db.impl.iterators;
    import java.sql.Timestamp;
    * Contains an iterator for viewing message headers in folder view.

  • Compilation Error in basic java class

    Hello,
    I am newbie. And, I have developed following java classes. But the child class is results in error. Below is step by step event. What am I doing wrong?
    Step 1. Created a compiled class Shirt(parent). No issues
    public class Shirt {
    public int shirtID =0;
    public String description = "description required";
    // color codes
    public char colorCode = 'U';
    public double price = 0.0;
    public int quantityInStock = 0;
    // methods
    public void displayShirtInformation() {
       System.out.println("Shirt ID: " + shirtID);
       System.out.println("Shirt description:" + description);
       System.out.println("Color Code:" + colorCode);
       System.out.println("Shirt price: " + price);
       System.out.println("Quantity in Stock :" + quantityInStock);
    } // end of method
    } // end of class
    Step 2. Child class results in compilation error
    public class ShirtTest{
    public static void main (String[] args) {
         Shirt myShirt;
         myShirt = new Shirt();
         myShirt.displayShirtInformation();
    Step 3. Error show below
    C:Java>javac ShirtTest.java
    ShirtTest.java:4: cannot find symbol
    symbol  : class Shirt
    location: class ShirtTest
         Shirt myShirt;

    Hello all. I am in a similar boat as far as getting the error message:

        23  }This is basically from the Fundamentals of the Java ^TM^ Programming Language SL-110-SE6 Student Guide(pages 9-12 & 9-13). We are working on Encapsulation if that makes any difference. Maybe it's just me but this book is not very new programmer/user friendly. At least in my opinion. I find it very frustrating that I can't even type in examples from the book and get them to work.
    I have tried the javac -cp . ShirtTest.java suggested here but get the same error. I have removed all *.class* files and still no luck.
    OS:
    uname -a
    SunOS 5.10
    JAVA:
    java -version
    java version "1.5.0_26"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_26-b03)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0_26-b03, mixed mode)
    Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

  • BUG. 10.1.3.EA: Internal Compilation error. Large project.

    I tried to compile large project (~4,000 classes) using extenal "javac" compiler and 1.4.2 JDK. When I "clean the project" and then run "make" the follwoing error frequently ocures. Once it fails it's true both for entire project and if I try to compile a single class not depending on anything else. This makes me to beleive that the problem is not related to any particular class (also see notes below, looks like "javac" process doesn't even start).
    Compiling...
    Internal compilation error, terminated with a fatal exception
    It doesn't happen if I use "rebuild" function instead of "make". It doesn't happen always but most of the times. I tried different versions of 1.4.2 (02,03,04) and don't see any specific pattern.
    Also looks like once I "rebuild" the project, "make" runs ok.
    I run Task Monitor and here is what I found out:
    - CPU maxs out at 100% for about 10 - 15 % and then the error is reported;
    - Error is reported before "javac" process is started;
    - There is plenty of memory available. I have 1 G with 640 set as max for JDeveloper, but it doesn't exceed 400 MB.
    I compiled a smaller project (~1,000 files) and didn't have this problem.
    I wont' be able to send the sorce code but I can send project files if it helps.
    Is there any logging I could enable to get more information? Did anybody reported anything similar? Is there any configuration parameters I can play with?
    Thanks in advance,
    Noel.

    I run JDev using jdev.exe and here is a stack I got in console window. Any ideas?

  • Error: Internal compilation error, terminated with a fatal exception

    Hello,
    I am getting the dreaded "Error: Internal compilation error, terminated with a fatal exception" build failure and cannot remedy. I've tried the various suggested fixes from previous posts regarding this compiler error. The file that the build fails on will compile with javac without errors. This error has occurred before with this same application. Restarting JDeveloper has worked in the past, but not this time.

    Try switching your project compiler from ojc to the native one and see if there is a change in the results.

  • Compiler error when useing switch statements in an inner class

    I have defined several constants in a class and want to use this constans also in an inner class.
    All the constants are defined as private static final int.
    All works fine except when useing the switch statement in the inner class. I get the compiler error ""constant expression required". If I change the definition from private static final to protected static final it works, but why?
    What's the difference?
    Look at an example:
    public class Switchtest
       private static final int AA = 0;
       protected static final int BB = 1;
       private static int i = 0;
       public Switchtest()
          i = 0; // <- OK
          switch(i)
             case AA: break; //<- OK, funny no problem
             case BB: break; //<- OK
             default: break;
      private class InnerClass
          public InnerClass()
             i = 0; // <- OK: is accessible
             if (AA == i) // <- OK: AA is seen by the inner class; i  is also accessible
                i = AA + 1;
             switch(i)
                case AA: break; // <- STRANGE?! Fail: Constant expression required
                case BB: break; // <- OK
                default: break;
    }Thank's a lot for an explanation.

    Just a though:
    Maybe some subclass of Switchtest could decalare its own variable AA that is not final, but it can not declare its own BB because it is visible from the superclass. Therefore the compiler can not know for sure that AA is final.

  • Af:serverListener on jspx page - compilation error - jDeveloper 11.1.1.4.0

    I have a weird problem that adding a serverListerner component on jspx page causes compilation error:
    The class of the deferred-methods return type "{0}" can not be found.
    No property editor found for the bean "javax.el.MethodExpression"
    If I remove serverListener (to pass compilation) and then add it again in run-time, it works normally (the backing bean method is being triggered correctly, including passing params, etc).
    It is happening only on the current project, but when I make a test case it works normally. I suspect it has something with the project settings, but I couldn't find the cause regarding that the project has advanced and there are so many differences to be able to do simple comparison.
    Does anyone know what could be the reason for af:serverListener to break compilation, please?

    Hi,
    Try like this
    <trh:script>clientListenerMethoName= function(event) {
    var source = event.getSource();
    AdfCustomEvent.queue( source, "serVerListenerType", {}, false); }
    </trh:script>
    Next :
    <af:clientListener method="clientListenerMethoName" type="click"/>
    <af:serverListener type="serVerListenerType" method="#{beanName.methodName}"/>

    I've a class I compiled used in JDev 10.1.2.1.
    Now I try to compile it with JDev 10.1.3 but I get an error :
    Error: Internal compilation error, terminated with a fatal exception
    What does it means ?
    How can I solve it ?
    I tried to use both 5.0 and 1.4.2 compilers but the result is the same.
    Tks

  • Compilation Error: "class or interface expected" for simple EAR???

    Dear all,
    I have access to the customers NW CE 7.1 SP07 and of course I am using the corresponding NWDS 7.1 SP07 that comes with this CE installation. I am trying to study JEE 5 @ SAP and I have created a very simple Application (from the Book http://www.sap-press.de/katalog/buecher/titel/gp/titelID-1480).
    In NWDS I have created the following 4 projects:
    1. Dictionary Project
    Describes 2 Tables (TMP_EMPLOYEES and TMP_ID_GEN)
    2. EJB 5 Project
    Contains a stateless EJB + local business interface + Entity class.
    The EJB accesses the entity class, which is mapped to a simple table (TMP_EMPLOYEES).
    3. Dynamic Web Project
    Contains actually only one JSP (index.jsp) which allows to the local business interface for creating a new Entity.
    4. Enterprise Application Project (EAR)
    Creates a package from 2. and 3.
    I have successfully deployed both the Dictionary Project and the EAR (all to the same server).
    But If I call the corresponding URL via web browser I get the following error:
    500   Internal Server Error
    "Error in compiling [/EmployeeWeb/index.jsp] in application [sap.com/EmployeeEar]."
    Details: "The WebApplicationException log ID is [005056841108002A00000070000007AC0139C8D8862D3EED]."
    In the "Log Viewer" of the "SAP NetWeaver Administrator" (via browser...) I have found the following:
    Message: Processing HTTP request to servlet [jsp] finished with error.
    The error is: com.sap.engine.services.servlets_jsp.server.jsp.exceptions.CompilingException: Error in executing the compilation process: [ Compilation Failed! Exit Code=1

    As you can see there is some compilation error, it says 3 times "'class' or 'interface' expected". If i remove all the relevant EJB java code from my index.jsp everything works fine. So I guess there must be some problem with finding the resources. Unfortunately this "logging" is not helpful at all (thank you SAP!). In NWDS everything is fine no problems at all!!!
    Who can help me here with this?
    Thanks in Advance

    I have found the issue.
    in the index.jsp I have the following lines:
    <!-- Import Statements -->
    <%@ page import="javax.naming.InitialContext" %>
    <%@ page import="com.sap.demo.session.EmployeeServicesLocal;" %>
    Now check the end of the second import ==> ;
    Removing the semicolon solves the issue. But the SAP error message is still not very helpful to me.

  • Compile error: How to modify .ini in 2010 SP1

    Hello,
    I am using the attached VI to stack cycles of data.  Ideally, I would like to stack 200-300 cycles, but anytime I get above 100-125 shift registers/cycles, the VI will not compile.  After 20-30 minutes, the error "out of memory exception caught in llvm gencode" appears.
    Follow past searches, I have increased the virtual memory as detailed below, which did not solve my problem.
    http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361G-01/lvhowto/enable_lrg_ad_aware/
    I see this posting detailing modifying the .ini file as another possible solution.
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/BA4B9038D01F3C99862577CA004BE1AD?OpenDocument
    Being unfamiliar with modifying the .ini file, how do I exactly do this?  Is it as simple as adding a line "LLVMLargeVIThreshold=12000" ? (or something greater than the standard 7500 value).  I have adding this line to the .ini file and still get the compiler error llvm issue.
    Any other suggestions or thoughts?  I dont want to have to roll back from 2010SP1 in order to be able to run this vi and get around this issue...
    Thank you

    I can get it above 200 shift register elements and still get it to compile, but that may be due to system differences.
    However, that design does not scale well.  Any time you want to change the number of elements you need to modify the program.
    Have you considered a queue of datatype Array of Double?
    If you look at buffer allocations in your program you get one buffer for each shift register element and one for the 2D array. Each must have contiguous memory due to the way arrays are stored in memory.  If the input array array grows in length, then all of the buffers need to be reallocated.  This should be a run time problem rather than compile-time, but the compliler may try to do some optimizations, particularly since it knows all the shift register buffers will be the same size.
    The Queue stores each array separately and the arrays can be different lengths.  To get all the data, use Get Queue Status with return elements? set True.  This will return an array of clusters with each cluster containing one of the input arrays.
