Compressed files does reduce in file size.

Help please trying to send a pdf file 22MB and compressing it does not reduce the size.
How do i reduce the file size.

funlola,
By nature PDF files are already fairly optimized and compressed.  Preview or Adobe Acrobat may be able to reduce the file size a bit more but at a cost of a noticably lower quality PDF.  If a lower quality PDF is acceptable for your use-case then Carolyn's suggestion will work wonderfully and for free.
If the process of optimizing your PDF further produces a poor quality PDF, then you may be better off skipping email and exchanging the original large PDF using a better tool for the exchange of large files such as Dropbox.com or Gogle Drive.
Hope this helps,
Tim

Yes, you do this when you export the images from the Library.
    File -> Export
in the Size section, you don't need images larger than the frame size, so you can specify that and in the Jpeg Quality you can select the amount of compression used.

  • MP4 & compression & file size, etc.

I know very little about video exporting and compression other than the most basic steps. My project is creating a long list of 4-10 minute tutorial videos for internet streaming. I have produced one video so far, and at 5 minutes, 1280x800, H264 mp4, it's 65mb. That's way too big.
After many hours of research and numerous trial exports, I'm not gaining any ground. I just don't have time to spend days/weeks learning this in depth.
I used a screen capture video program and recorded at the full screen resolution, 1280x800. The initial streaming presentation would be a smaller resolution, but should the viewer choose to go full screen, I would like it to be crisp and clear, so my goal is to maintain 1280x800, or close to it.
Lowering the quality seems to defeat the purpose as the quality is substantially degraded. My question is, what are my reasonable expectations in terms of file size for a 5 minute mp4 video at 1280x800? Is 65mb about right? I have no idea but if I have 30 videos, and 5 minutes is one of the shorter ones, that could be many many gigabytes. Is there something I am missing how to get smaller file sizes?
H264 compression was recommended, and tried out several resolutions, having to calculate different multiples of 1280x800 - it all seems very manual and tedious. I just don't know how to proceed since the first video was just so big... Any guidance is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Actually, 65 MBs is quite a reasonable file size for a 5-minute, 1280x800, H.264/AAC MP4 file. (File Size = Total Duration X Total Data Rate so your data rate is only on the order of 1.7 Mbps which was originally the limit for 640x480 5th generation iPod files.) In order to make the files smaller you will have to either settle for reduced video quality and/or a smaller display size. (You could, for instance, create a 1024x800 anamorphic encode that displays as a 1280x800 file, but this would only reduce the file size by a small amount whereas a 640x400 non-anamorphic file could cut the file size significantly while retaining similar quality in the smaller display. In short, you need to re-evaluate your streaming/fast start requirements. (I.e., I typically use 2 to 4 times your data rate for what I consider "good quality" 720p24 file encodes for viewing on HD capable devices.)
After many hours of research and numerous trial exports, I'm not gaining any ground. I just don't have time to spend days/weeks learning this in depth.
It is unlikely you will be able to further reduce your file size without a loss in video quality and/or a reduction in the file's display dimensions.
I used a screen capture video program and recorded at the full screen resolution, 1280x800. The initial streaming presentation would be a smaller resolution, but should the viewer choose to go full screen, I would like it to be crisp and clear, so my goal is to maintain 1280x800, or close to it.
The only way to reduce file size is to either "throw away" data or use a more efficient, higher compression codec. H.264 is about the most scalable, highly efficient, highest compression capable codec you can use which is why it is used for everything from FaceTime to BD/AVCHD encodings.
Lowering the quality seems to defeat the purpose as the quality is substantially degraded. My question is, what are my reasonable expectations in terms of file size for a 5 minute mp4 video at 1280x800? Is 65mb about right? "Reasonable epectations" are realative—and may be quite different for each person. Basically, the expectation is reasonable if the file delivers the quality you want at the display dimensions you want in a file size with which you can live. If not, then you have to re-evaluate your "expectations." Further, encoding is driven by the content itself with every file being different and should be treated as such depending on the graphic complexity of the content, the number/type of vector motions involved, ratio of light:dark scenes, display dimensions, etc. There is no "one shoe fits all" here and what is "reasonable" for one file may not be "reasonable" for another. What you are actually missing here is an overall goal strategy.
H264 compression was recommended, and tried out several resolutions, having to calculate different multiples of 1280x800 - it all seems very manual and tedious. I just don't know how to proceed since the first video was just so big... Any guidance is greatly appreciated!
You say you are creating tutorial files for internet streaming. If this is your goal, how do you plan to deliver these files in terms of internet connection speeds? The target speed for internet delivery will determine the data rate limits within which you must work. Once you determine the playback data rate limits for target users, you will know the data rate limits at which to encode your file for playback. In turn, this data rate will determine the combination of display dimensions and level of video quality you will have to accept. At this point the size of individual files is of lessor importance because once the file begins to stream or play in the fast "start mode," the file can continue to play as the data continues to stream or download to the end user's local platform/media player. In fact, at this point you can actually decide if you want to create multiple file versions for users having different target internet connection speeds or just a single file. Frankly, until you are able to answer such questions, there is very little advice that anyone can give you.

  • AI Compression & File Size

    Hi
I desperately need to reduce the file size of my AI files. They generally have multiple layers, avatars, editable regions etc... and exists as 2-4mg files on disk. What steps can I take to reduce the filesize as I need to transmit them across the internet?
I've tried FXG but I lose brush strokes which is important in my AIs. Is there any suggestions about redundant data or particular file types that would reduce the file size suitable for web transmission?
Any suggestions at all will assist.
    Thanks

Is the winzip/stuff final element to protect interception of the ai file and eavesdropping or simply for further compression?
Zip or StuffIt compression may not yield much file size reduction with .ai files. It is, nevertheless, a recommended practice.
Unless you encrypt with a password, compression archives do not necessarily offer any protection against "eavesdropping." However, they do offer very good protection against possible data corruption during transmission. Certain file types, including .ai, seem more prone to corruption than others -- especially when transmitted as e-mail attachments -- and compression archives are an excellent way to prevent those kinds of problems.
The only possible drawback is that some corporate mail servers routinely filter out .zip file attachments because they've been used to spread malware. However, I'm seeing less and less of that lately (the filtering, not the malware, unfortunately).

  • Compressing file size from within a portfolio?

I've got 16 files within a PDF portfolio ranging from 80MB to 227Mb and I'm trying to compress them, the portfolio size is 1.41GB.  When I view the file size in Bridge as I compress each file I don't see any change in the individual file sizes nor in the Portfolio size.  Are the original files being compressed or are they stored seperately within the portfolio file?  And any idea why the portfolio size nor the original file sizes are changing after PDF optimization?

    Thanks, Leo.
To my mind, this looks about right : http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/pdfgenerator/
Do you know whether this will be suitable for integration into .net code?
Can it cover our needs (Concatenation, Compression, Bookmark-Editing)?

  • Compressing File Size

I am building a video and have it completed. Just that now it is 4.93gb and using a 4.74 disk. Is there a way to compress the size down to fit on the video or change some settings so the total size goes down enough to fit on disk?

    John,
If your Exported MPEG-2 (DVD-compliant) was > 4.7GB, you could have altered the bit-rate of the Export to end up with a smaller file.
Doing the Export, and letting Encore do the Transcode on Automatic will do the same thing. It will take your Duration and the disc capacity, and drop the bit-rate to match. Quality will suffer a bit, but as close as you are, depending on the bit-rate that you chose for your initial Export to MPEG-2, you will likely never notice this.
    Good luck,

  • How to reduce file size in Illustrator CS4?

    Hi!
I'm having troubles with the size of my files in Illustrator CS4, My files always ends with sizes near 100mb!
    I made some tests:
Create a new doc (7x5 cm), type some text, save: 1mb
Place an image (PSD file: 12mb), save without embedding: 8mb
Embedd the psd file, save: 16mb
Delete psd image, and place JPG (2,5mb), save without embedding: 8mb
    Embedd the JPG, save: 15mb
I0m using the save with compression option.
If I uncheck the compatibility with PDF, then my file goes from 15mb to 8mb, but it's too big anyway, my image is only 2,5mb!
I don't know, I think I'm doing something wrong or illustrator is the most inefficient program that I ever use.
Why if my file without the image is only 1mb, and my JPG only 2,5mb, when I put them together the .AI goes to 15mb???? that's 500% the real size of my files!
Please I need help with this.
    THANKS !

Think about it for a minute and you might find the answer yourself?  Ok perhaps it has something to do with the fact that a 2.5 mb jpeg, which is a compressed file size, is something like a 15 MB uncompressed file. I know but it is a compressed file but Illustrator has to uncompress it and make it pdf compatible turn off the pdf compatible option and see what happens.
I just tried it myself and sure enough a 4.1 jpeg place in AI makes the file 13.1 MB the uncompressed image is 15.8 MB
without pdf compatible the 4.1 mb file in AI is now a 1.1 MB file.
It makes sense to me perhaps if you think about it it might make sense to you as well.

  • Alac file size changes when added to iTunes

    Hello,
I've converted some FLAC files to ALAC using dbPowerAmp.  The file bit rate remains unchanged.  However, when I add the ALAC files to iTunes, the bit rate shown in iTunes is reduced.
Example - Alice Cooper, Hello Hurray
FLAC Bit Rate - 4608 kbs
Converted ALAC Bit Rate - 4608 kbs
iTunes ALAC Bit Rate - 3012 kbs
    Any ideas what's going on?
    I'm using iTunes 10.7.0.21
    Thanks.

    Nothing has been changed.
Sounds like iTunes & dbPowerAmp figure the bit rate differently.
dbPowerAmp uses the uncompressed file sizeand iTunes figures the compressed file size.
Since the file is smaller, the bit rate will have to be lower.

  • Sound file size

    Hi,
How do people have music controls on their sites WITH a
selection of 3 OR 4 SONGS? Is there a way to compress file size?
ONE song I have for example is close to 50 megs. I would like to
put a player (soon to be created in Flash, using tutorials) on my
home page, but before I do one song alone is toooooooo large of a
file. And I would like to have a selection of maybe three songs.
What do I do? Can anybody help?
    Thanx so much,

    Hi,
Thanx for gettin back to me.

I will learn to build the player, but like I said song files
are to be too large. I havent compressed anything, I thought maybe
    others were. I dont know.
    What do ya think,

  • Curious: How does "Save for Web" reduce the file size?

I do know HOW TO USE "Save for web" -- no questions there. I'm wanting to understand better what's going on under the hood.
When I start with say, an 8x10 JPG at 300 dpi, I understand completely how bringing that down to 72 dpi yields a much smaller file. Simple math.
What I don't understand is how the "Save for Web" function can reduce that smaller file size so drastically at the same dimensions, still 72dpi, with negligible image loss (at least at the 80% quality). Maybe it's just my amateur eyes, but for everyday casual web pages, I can discern no significant difference between the two 72dpi images. (At lower quality settings, I do see differences.)
Can anyone explain a bit more of HOW Photoshop does this? Is it simply compression? For example, is it -roughly- analogous to converting an AIF sound file as an MP3?
    Thanks,
    cb

Thanks, that worked. I figure there was a setting in there somewhere and was even in the right tab, but didnt think to click on that.

  • Reducing file size #1...what exactly does file, reduce file size do?

Questions on reducing a pages to pdf file size…I will post each question seperatly.
    1) I was surprised to see page reduce file size take it from 50 megs to 20 megs…when I looked at a large jpeg file, its size went form 230k to 70k, but the entire image (not just the visible part after the mask) was there (I was hoping it would crop to the mask).
I am curious, what exactly is reduce file size doing?
Is it applying a quartz filter that I can control through colorsync (I think not)?
    Thanks, bob

You will need to test the results, but I suspect it is definitely lowering the resoltion to either screen resolution (72dpi) or double (150dpi) and upping the compression of the .jpegs.
In contrast to the Quartz filters, the results from file reduction in Pages is disappointing with a hefty loss of quality for not so much file reduction.
I would work with known distiller settings in Acrobat Pro for a better result.

  • Is there a way to "compress" or reduce keynote file size?

I have transferred some PowerPoint presentations to Keynote and in general have had no difficulty. However, I can "compress" the pictures in PowerPoint which makes the file size much smaller.
Is there any way to reduce the file size of a Keynote presentation?

hi I am trying to do a project of putting a keynote saved as a quicktime into garageband and adding audio and then compressing it via Share ...sent to itunes etc. It does get smaller.
But Are there any experts out there on putting a keynote with narration into garageband. I loose all of the timing control when I send it to quicktime. It seems like a LOT of steps.
Also, putting a narration into keynote is so long. Power Point just lets you record the narration on each slide. So I was putting it into garageband and trying to add the narration podcast style. Any suggestions.

  • How can I reduce the file size when PDF Optimizer does not do much?

I have a PDF form that exists of 48 pages. 44 pages are forms / have form fields, the other 4 are just informative. Each form-page has approx. 80 fields (checkboxes, text fields).
When I started setting up the PDF form the file size was 12 MB and I had placed fields on 21 pages. Then with 34 pages the file size was 19 MB. And with 40 pages it was 35 MB big! Finally with 44 pages the file size is 34 MB.
So I searched with Google and found some tips. Using the "PDF Optimizer" option inside Acrobat for example. So I did, and the file was reduced only with 3 MB... 31 MB was the file. Also used the option "Save as.... Optimized".... no difference. I also found a suggestion about removing embedded fonts. Using the "Audit Space Usage" option I noticed the fonts taking many MegaBytes:
    * Content Streams: 5.287.000     15,09 %
    * Fonts:                24.556.810     70,08 %  !!
    * Acrobat forms:      3.349.164    12,05 %
In the older PDF version (I saved and kept this one too) with just 21 pages with form-fields, the  "Audit Space Usage" shows:
    * Content Streams: 5.292.000     40,14 %
    * Fonts:                 1.290.224     9,79 %
    * Acrobat forms:      1.588.758    12,05 %
So I could save many many MegaBytes by -UnEmbedding- fonts. But if I do this (unembed ALL fonts), the file size stays almost the same!?!?!? Why? What can I do to reduce the file size? I would like it to be 8 MB if possible (32 MB -  24 MB = 8 MB)?
    Thank you for your help!

If you have authored the form, reduce the number of different fonts for the content and form fields.
Any font used in a form field will cause that font to be embedded into the PDF.
If you are going to Optimize the PDF be very careful with forms. Optimization does a lot of removal of items and rearranging of items which can really mess up forms.

  • Why Does Save As-PDF/A reduce file size when I don't want it to?

I scanned a 4-paged printed card with my Epson Perfection 4490 scanner in order to digitally archive it. Each page is about 5x7 inches, and I scanned at 100 percent. I scanned each page as an individual TIFF image file, at 600 samples per inch.
I brought each TIFF image file into Photoshop one at a time. I saved each TIFF as a JPEG, at Quality: 8, Baseline ("Standard").
Then, I brought the JPEG's into Adobe Acrobat Pro to create a 4-paged PDF. Initially, the file size of the saved 4-paged PDF was 5 MB. (Later, I determined the individual JPEG's add up to 5.2 MB.) When saving as PDF/A, the final format that I want to use, the file size was unexpectedly reduced from 5 MB to 2.5 MB.
What is the reason for the file size being reduced to 2.5 MB? I had already done the compression that I wanted in Photoshop. The PDF was not downsampled. I purposely did not use Optimizer.
I did a test. This time, in Photoshop, I compressed each TIFF to JPEG, at Quality: 5, Baseline ("Standard"), the Medium setting instead of the High setting. After bringing these JPEG's into Adobe Acrobat Pro, the saved 4-paged PDF was 2.8 MB in size, an expected smaller size. Saving as PDF/A produced a file of 2.6 MB in size, very close to the same size this time, possibly indicating it accepting the Medium quality level.
Apparently, saving as PDF/A reduces the quality level of JPEG's to Medium quality, when they are of higher quality to begin with. It seems to be designed to optimize even when I don't want it to.

Here's the Audit Space Usage for the original 5 MB file. It shows the images taking up the majority of the space, as expected:
