Concentric circles, but not quite.

Does anyone know how to easily reproduce an expanding pattern made of circles like this: http://i1.creativecow.net/u/181152/screenshot2011-09-01at6.35.16pm.png
Many thanks.
Richard.

Richard,
To avoid confusion, the term dots is used for the small filled circles here.
The distance between dots seems to be about the same as their size. This corresponds to 6 dots times the number of the circle (6 dots in the first circle round the central dot etc).
A  way that is more accurate than using the Polar grid is a Blend based on a single outer circle. The exact size and number of Blend steps depend on the desired number of circles/dots. For 61 circles round a central dot (with 366 dots in the outermost circle), you may:
1) Create a circle with Width = Height = 233 times the size of the dot, give it a Stroke Weight = the dot size, set the Cap to Round, tick Dashed Line with Dash = 0 and Gap = twice the dot size;
2) Ctrl/Cmd+C+F to create a copy and set W = H = 0;
3) Object>Blend>Options set Specified Steps = 60 (I always prefer to set Orientation to Align to Path unless specifically not, silly sometimes);
4) Select the two circles and Object>Blend>Make;
5) Enjoy.
If you have too many circles/dots, you may:
6) Object>Blend>Expand and delete the unnecessary ones from the outside in.
You may change the dot colour at any time.
It may be mentioned that the size of the outer circle is adjusted for the inherent inaccuracy of the circle shape.

  • Window Manager delimma! TWM is almost perfect, but not quite :(

    Hi,
I guess I should start out by saying I'm pretty new to Linux, so I'm not experienced with all the DEs and WMs out there.  I've trief (very briefly) KDE, Xfce, and Openbox, but honestly none of them really got me as excited as TWM.  I've spent hours writing my own .twmrc from scratch, and I love it... unfortunately, there seem to be a few critical things things that TWM just won't do.  These are listed below in descending order of importance to me:
    * task-switching (alt+tabbing): I've been able to do something simple with this using f.forwiconmgr to switch focus, and I like it fine; the only problem is that I can't make it raise the windows, too.  I tried a function {f.forwiconmgr f.raise}, but for some reason it would raise the CURRENT window before switching focus to the next.
    * maximize (or fullzoom) on double-clicking the titlebar.
    * I have one TitleButton which fullzooms on being clicked.  For some reason there's an issue where after clicking it, the next click anywhere in TWM's domain will be ignore and changes the cursor to a tiny mouse icon.  I have no idea why, and I haven't been able to get around it.
    * fullzoom margins: I have my icon manager at the bottom of the screen and an xclock, almost like a taskbar which blends in with the background.  I don't like maximized windows blocking them.
    * I'd really like to be able to force certain windows to always be in the back.  This is mainly because my icon manager and xclock are colored to look like they're part of the background, but I guess if the previous one is satisfied this becomes less important.
    * I can't (or haven't figured out how to) make windows raise to the top when you click within them.  If I write a line to f.raise when clicking in the window, then TWM consumes the click-signal and it never reaches the window.  This is at the bottom because I'm already learning to live with this, and could even see myself starting to appreciate it as a feature before long.
I suppose what I'm asking for is either a solution to these issues with TWM, or suggestions for an alternative WM that will do all of these plus what I like so much about TWM.  Of what I've tried, I liked Openbox the most, but having to customize it in xml and its themes kind of turned me off.  At the bottom you'll find a link to a screenshot of my current TWM setup, just for some idea if what I'm getting at.  I just don't know what to do!  I've become very attached to TWM, but also very put off by its flaws.
    Thanks!

    Hello!
    I'm trying TWM.
    It's rather interesting.
With my .twmrc, I can switch between windows pressing Alt + F3, and then Alt + F11 or F12 to select which window, and then Alt + F9 to raise it, or Alt + F10 to deiconify it.
If several windows are deiconified, I can switch pressing Alt + F1.
I made several keyboard shortcuts to start programms, to handle windows, etc…
With vdesk I have multiple desktops. I set Ctrl + F1-4 to switch to a desktop to anothers.
I made a menu with some programs I use often, but I must add some programs.
I use slim as login manager. I have the slim picture as background. It's good.
I wonder if I won't continue to use twm. It's rather nice, and well made.
Here is the .twmrc I modified:

  • Ipod needs to be restored but not quite so simple

my ipod 30gig video said it was corrupt after a week or so of use, so i pressed the restore button in itunes as advised. i get all the warnings about losing all my data and such. i press ok and continue, it tells me its recovering it. then recovery is done and it says ipod restarting do not disconnect. simple enough, but after its restarted it tells me 'ipod is in recovery mode' and tells me i have to restore ipod before continueing... but i just did this. i've tried pressing restore again but this just seems to turn into a vicious circle of pressing restore, it telling me its restored, and then telling me i have to restore again. i'm using itunes 7.0

I had the same problem. I uninstall itunes 7.0 and downloaded the previous ipod installer before 7.0 and it worked perfectly. Just make sure you uninstall if you don't it will not let you install previuos versions.

Not everyone updates their hardware porfile but it should have been spotted that yours lists 10.5.8 which was a big clue and reason to ask and check what you are runnning.
Apple sells 10.6.3. Unlike the prior two which did come out with 10.X.6 which would work and allow boot from DVD you may need the 10.6.8 on flash memory that comes with Lion except that is $69.
We usually do but get tired now that we've been saying "ATI 5x70 needs 10.6.5 or later" when people upgraded their graphic card like you did.
I wish that wasn't so. I don't know how ATI does it for Windows but they do have to retool their drivers when a new OS comes out but end up with a package that supports more than one OS version.

  • Webpage not displaying certain characters correctly. Similar question already asked but not quite the same

I am using version 4.0.1 and it was a clean install after I reformatted my hard drive and did all the updates. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with a 3.0 Ghz CPU with Hyperthreading and 2 GB memory.
On this one particular website I belong to, where a colon is supposed to be, I get this little square box with the letters FF IR in it. I have the default settings for Western (ISO-8859-1) for the Default Character Encoding.
I've asked other members of that website and they have the same settings, but they see the colon and not the FF IR.
I will include a link for the site and I don't think you have to sign up to view it and I did a screen shot for both Mozilla/Firefox 4.0.1 and Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 but in Internet Explorer, where the colon is supposed to be there is just a little square.
I will include a link to the site and if you scroll down to post # 2, you will see the screen shots of the problem for both Mozilla/Firefox and Internet Explorer.
    Here is the link:
    http://forum1.aimoo.com/theyulelog/MESSAGE-BOARD-TECHNICAL-ISSUES-QUESTIONS/RE-Not-sure-if-this-is-a-technical-issue-or-not-1-2021099.html
I know you can't help with Microsoft programs and that is fine as I only used Internet Explorer for Microsoft Updates and to download Mozilla/Firefox.
Initially the responses from the site owner didn't have any problems on his end, but another person gave me some tips but they didn't work and then we found out that it is indeed supposed to be a colon.
I didn't have this problem with earlier versions, but when I had to reformat and reinstall everything, the only version I could download from Mozilla/Firefox was 4.0.1
I'm also including the information from this help section where it says "We've made some educated guesses about your current browser and operating system. Show details>>

I'm not sure what screen shot you are referring to, but if it is in your initial reply, before you typed the thing about''' "I do not seem to have a font to display" ''' But I see the FF IR and then the FF IR with quotation marks on each side.
Then pretty much of the whole page instead of having different characters for each font set, it shows several rows of FF IR.
I did notice the same problem today with a site I belong to that I take surveys for, the whole page was filled with FF IR
If the oxFFoo - oxFFFF block, I actually went to the search function for the page the link you included brings me too and neither of them showed up so I don't know what to do. I did earlier try to do a search for how to add the : font to my Unicode and the first thing that came up was "Basic Latin" Unicode Character 'COLON' (U+003A
Someone from the website I'm having the problem with told me something about UTF-8 encoding and gave me a link to check why Firefox doesn't detect UTF-8 encoding. I checked the fonts and under UTF, it starts with UTF-16 so I guess I have to figure a way to add UTF-8.
I thank you again for your help.

  • I need a page Behavior! (Kind of a Redirect, but not quite...)

I use DW MX to build & maintain index pages for a library
of scanned docs on a company network.
The pages are static, just links to pdfs, so we don't use an
    app server.
The PHB has decided that he wants links pre-built (monthly)
for docs that don't exist yet, and until they do exist he wants a
"These pages don't exist yet" page for each of dozens of
    non-existent pages.
    Don't even ask...
What I need is to have a single "These pages don't exist yet"
page that will open whenever a link is clicked that doesn't have a
corresponding file in the directory, but when the named file is
added to the directory, the link opens the file.
This doesn't seem like a novel idea, but I've searched for an
extension, a behavior, or a javascript, or anything which will do
this, with no luck; . Does anyone know of something that would do
    this??

It sounds like you need a custom "404 Not Found" page. I
    Googled and found a
    few such as
    http://www.alistapart.com/articles/perfect404/
    and
    http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/custom404.shtml
    hope this helps

  • Embedded or in-line web page in mail!  Almost there but not quite.

I have successfuly made a small web page in GoLive ( one small images, an animation GIF and a short block of text to act as an extended signature) then rendered/ viewed the page in Safari and everything looks OK at this stage. Then from file menu gone to 'Mail contents of this page' which of course opens the Mail.app and I can then see the images and text embedded into the mail and not as an attachment.
Sending to myself it works fine so that when I receive it the images appear as part of the message but send out to others and they just see ? marks in blue boxes.
What have I missed. Is there something I need to put into the header?

Which options do you see enabled and which greyed out in the bottom part of the View > Message menu? If Best Alternative or Next Alternative are enabled, does choosing them fix the problem?
There is a hidden setting that makes Plain Text the preferred alternative for viewing messages. Maybe something has caused that setting to be turned ON, in which case you might be able to fix the problem by turning it OFF.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>:
defaults write com.apple.mail PreferPlainText -bool FALSE
Alternatively, you could issue the following command to revert to the default setting (which should accomplish the same, since the default is to not prefer Plain Text):
    defaults delete com.apple.mail PreferPlainText

  • Huey pro issue, almost resolved, but, not quite

This machine and windows 7 are not a match made in heaven. Love the operating system, but, its totally a pain with the W700 stuff.  I have fully updated *everything*, it beeps like it is calibrating, it says its finished and successful, but, it doesn't do a thing. I have had this machine since 2009 and its always an issue after a clean reinstall of windows. this time worse than usual. This was working absolutely perfectly until I reinstalled windows. Yes, I have the latest driver. (heck, its taken a ton just to get it to work at all!)   I know it is a minor little software error but for the life of me I cannot figure out what

Yes, you can switch it and it may be that my judgement is bad. I went in and messed up the color and it did change it. I think the monitor I am on is too warm and that may be affecting my perception on the Lenovo being too cool. I am going to mess with it some more this evening. Its my favorite feature on the w700

  • My Publisher 2007 Font Times document printed to Adobe X Printer has 150% clear display of PDF but not quite as clear at 100%

    (1) HP 2311X LED Monitor and monitor LED HP Pavilion 27XI LED, Windows 8.1 on HP ENVY 700-qe computer system: (2) Windows XP Dell Computer Inspiron 530 Model: DCMF with NVIDIA Video Card GeoForce 8400 with Monitor Dell LCD model S2409Wb (3) I am using Publisher 2007 to print to Adobe Pro version X  PDF printer to produce a PDF.  We produce one PDF set up for 5.5X8 set up in printers spread and another PDF set up for readers spread.  At 100% on both computer systems the print on the screen is not as clear (just a little like when an inkjet runs low on ink-some parts of the printed letters aren't as distinct as when viewed at 150%.  We are using the Times Font.  Clear Type computer enabled on both the Windows 8.1 system and the XP system displays.  I tried using Publisher 2013 to produce a PDF and it seemed just as good at 150% and a little clearer at 100%.   The PDFs are displayed on a web page for people to download.  The web page is www.cbcb.org – a good booklet to look at on the first web page is “Appointed Times”.
What is going on here?  The document has been viewed on the above two computers with three monitors and results are the same.   With the Publisher 2007 I was printing to an installed Adobe Printer in the printer dialogue box to produce the PDF and with the Publisher 2013 I was creating the PDF by using the "SAVE AS" option.
Would appreciate some pointers on what is going on.

This is a pretty unusal error that i dont even think Adobe has an answer to. Either A.) They are really bad with keeping all their customer case information or B.) They know this is something they have no answer to so they are giving us the run around. It just doesnt make sense that it will work with excel and powerpoint now and not word. Only thing i have not tried is reloading Office...It may be something to attempt. If anything comes to mind i would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

  • InDesign almost hanging with tables, but not quite.

InDesign CS5 (7.0.4) on iMac 2.7i5, 12GB RAM, OS 10.7.3 runs very slowly when editing tables, applying cell styles and table styles. Almost hangs - no spinning beach ball. This has only been happening for the last few weeks, and also happens on a MacPro (Also 10.7.3), 2 x 2.26 Xeon & 12GB RAM. Have tried SING removal, but makes no difference.
    Any ideas?

I'm guessing John, or resident expert on these things, will want to see it, so please when it hangs, run Activity Monitor, select InDesign, and run Sample Process. You'll get a report. Upload it to http://pastebin.com/.
If it were an actual hang, he'd want you to do more, but we'll wait and see what he says.

  • Something similar to browse path control, but not quite

    Hi all,
in my VI there is a 2D listbox. When I click on a line, in a subpanel a VI is loaded and data from listbox is written into controls in this subpanel. The VI in the subpanel then is finished.
A "browse path" control in the subpanel can be pressed, a new window is opened and I can choose a path, even though the subpanel VI is not running.
Is there an option to have a custom control, where I can open e.g. a new VI when a button is pressed? XControls don't seem to work or I am too stupid.
    Thx in advance

    Hi Tesla,
customize a boolean button to show the same image as the browse button of the path control. Then you can call your own subVI when that button is pressed…

  • Camera profiles good, but not quite on?? D300

At least with the D300 profiles. The in camera jpeg still looks better that the DNG rindered with the vivid settings in the camera profile.
It is a much beter image than the ACR settings.
Would there be anyway to get the settings out of the embedded jpeg preview thumbnail and apply them to the parent DNG file?
    Any Ideas?
    I'm using beta 2 in Lightroom 2.0.
    Braden

I'm using Windows XP. On my computer the path to the profiles is:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles"
If you go to that location you will find a folder designated as beta, among other things. All you have to do is delete that folder, and your beta profiles will be gone. Since that is quite a long path to navigate to, I have created a shortcut to the folder in a place where I can find it quickly.

  • Report for delivered but not billed orders

    Hi All,
I am trying to build a query using logical database to extract all orders for which delivery has been done, but not yet billed. I believe i can extract this data using VAV logical database, but not quite sure if i should use VAV or VFV.
Can someone let me know, which database to use & also what input conditions i need to maintain to extract only the information which i am looking for?
Hope my question is clear, await inputs.
    Vivek

    Hi Vivek,
What I wanted to say that you won't get information from VAV about billing since as far as I know it doesn't contain any relevant table.
You should try create a query using LIKP-LIPS-(joint type: left outer)-VBRK. This will connect deliveries to billing document, you can also get SO number. Please try this.
(Sorrowully I don't know which logical database would be good for you)

  • MBP 15" (late 2008) new Hard drive issues in 10.6.8 but not in 10.8.5

I have a 15" Macbook Pro (Late 2008) with an up to date EFI firmware (ver 2.8).
When I went to replace the hard drive (Hitachi 320GB hard wired at 1.5Gb/s) with a new hard drive (Seagate 1TB SSHD).
This new HD runs at 3gb/s or 6gb/s and my MBP which will only do 3GB/s (link speed) DOES select this speed.
Now I've read over 1000 posts (no, really) about this topic of SATA drives in older MBP's but problem is a bit more nuanced.
I partitioned the new HD as follows (disk1-250GB, disk2-250GB, disk3-500GB).  I have to do this because I run two versions of OSX.
I run OSX 10.6.8 for mobile audio recording and some post-production video editing and my software runs GREAT in Snow leopard.
Of course, there are some good reasons to have a newer OSX and so I put 10.8.5 on disk2.
On my old HD I had two partitions (disk1-150GB, disk2-170GB) and then used disk utility to copy the old drive to the new.
Here's where my problem is more nuanced.  The new drive works AWESOME when running 10.8.5 at 3GB/s.
In 10.6.8, however, I get pinwheels, beachballs, hiccups, etc when running the hard drive at 3Gb/s.
I'll play an aif audio file in Quicktime player and it will stop producing audio, BUT it keeps track of the time.  I swap back in my old HD and everything runs fine.
I'm planning in getting a different drive (one that works at 1.5 and 3.0GB/s) but I'd like to keep this drive as it boots up 10.8.5 FAST!  In about 15 secs or so.  OR, I could just swap out hard drives when I need to use 10.6.8 (which is really easy on my MBP but not preferable) and dedicate the old one for 10.6.8 only.
    QUESTION:::::
Does anyone have any idea why the same physical HD would work fine in 10.8.5 but have constant (every 15-20secs) read/write errors in 10.6.8??
The fact that it works great in 10.8.5 has me a bit puzzled of whether or not there's an inherent hardware incompatibility.
Sorry for the long post, just trying to give as much info as possible.

    Melophage-
I did try booting from the external SATA enclosure and all was fine; no hiccups.  I used disk utility to restore my Snow Leopard partition to a newly purchased HD; a Western Digital 1TB(Mainstream) drive that operates at 1.5 or 3.0 GB/s.  I noticed it's power requirement is about 3/4 of the factory drive which is also good.
Amazingly this drive actually works with a link speed of 3GB/s with 10.6.8.  And no pinwheels/beachballs.
    Possible Conclusions:
My MBP SATA onboard controller is OK with a HD that's 1.5/3.0 GB/s but NOT quite OK with 3.0/6.0GB/s.  Although both drives had a link speed of 3.0Gb/s, only the newly purchased "slower" drive worked flawlessly.  I'm fine with this being that my Apple factory drive was hard wired at 1.5Gb/sec and its speed was adequate for the audio/video recording I do in 10.6.8.  Hopefully it works fine with 10.8.5.  Still restoring that partition to the Western Digital drive.
In the end, I have a HD with over 3X the capacity as before and a link speed of 3GB/s.
I may not have the 15sec boot-up time as I did with the hybrid drive, but I won't miss it.
