Config the [ctrl]-[alt]-[F..] being console, X, log ...

what i know:
in /etc/inittab you can set with
c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/1 linux
c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/2 linux
c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/3 linux
c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/4 linux
c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/5 linux
c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 vc/6 linux
to have consoles at [F1] to [F6]
and when you start the X11 it will be at [F7]
what i wondered how to setup: (well maybe it's a little bit crazy to start more than one X, but i want to know if it is possible or not --- it should be possible)
1-> if i try to start another X, it cannot connect to :0.0 what is logical, because the first X is running there --- now, how (and where) can you config the behaviour of X11-servers that the second automatically runs on :0.1 (=usually [F8]) and the third on :0.2 (=usually [F9]) ?
// i know that this is possible on a UNIX ... should be possible also here, right?
2-> i want to have the system-log on [F12] ... how do i set this?
like the consoles in the /etc/inittab ?
thanx for sharing your knowledge with me :-)

You don't need to configure anything else :-) just start the second X with
startx -- :1
and it will be display :1
Note that display :0.1 would be a second graphic card with a second monitor IIRC
I once wrote a shell script that would let me start a number of X's automatically by looking through /tmp/.X11-unix/ to see which ones are available. They will be accessible by Alt-F8 and higher. I'm not sure you can force a certain virtual console, though.
There is one caveat, though. Only the first X you start (be it on display :0 or :1 or wherever) will have DRI, i.e. 3D acceleration.

  • Latest xkeyboard-config prevents ctrl-alt-backspace from killing X

well, as I wrote in the topic latest xkeyboard-config (1.6-1) is preventing ctrl-alt-backspace combination from killing X.  I have DonZap option set to false in my xorg.conf. I don't know if it should be like that. Is it a bug? If not, is it any workaround to make it work again?

How did you get that magic spell? RTFM or sth else?
I searched for stuff in google, opened a lot of tabs and somewhere in between there was a site about some patch that said something like "this patch removes the ctrl+alt+backspace keyboard shortcut in xorg - to reenable it, you have to type...".
So I pasted it into a terminal, hit strg+alt+backspace and it worked. Which is why I don't know, where I found that Information.
Might have been an ubuntu patch... maybe I should have mentioned that (in case someone added an ubuntu patch to xorg recently to make it "safer" and this is the result...?). edit: no, it wasn't - just found the ubuntu page I was on, and the information isn't from there. But it was on a patch site. Mostly plain text, code, patch info & lots of stuff I didn't understand.

  • The Ctrl+Alt+C shortcut isn't working in InDesign CS6.

The Ctrl+Alt+C shortcut isn't working in InDesign CS6. I don't have a ATI video card, so the hotkey it's not binded to the Catalyst Center.
I own a Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 video card and I have reinstalled Windows 7 x64 three weeks ago. Since then, the Ctrl+Alt+C shortcut isn't working.
I tried to reinstall the program. I tried to clean the preferences file. Still, nothing helped. I googled if there are any other programs that could take the shortcut to themselves. The InDesign menu says that the Ctrl+Alt+C is binded to the "Fit Object" action. But nothing happens.
If you have any suggestions on what should I do to repair this, please help.
P.S.: before the reinstall, everything worked just fine.
    MB: ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe
    CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-3770 3.4GHz
    GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980

No. But I think I figured it out somehow.
I just reinstalled the InDesign CS6 from scratch, as mentioned in the post above. Everything as new as possible. And it still had problems. Then I disabled two things from autostarting:
Broadcom 802.11 Network Adapter Wireless Network Tray Applet
    and
    Logitech SetPoint driver.
After that, everything went back to normal.
I assume one of them had grabbed the hotkey without mentioning it, so that must have been the fault. I don't think that other programs (other than Adobe's) have the same key bindings as InDesign.
P.S.: Just restarted each disabled program and it's the Broadcom 802.11 Network Adapter Wireless Network Tray Applet that shows issues with the keys.
So, thanks for trying to help me fix my problem.
If anybody else have troubles with the keys and they have this specific tray applet running, better disable it to be sure. In Windows Task Manager it is called WLTRAY.EXE.

  • What is an ergonomic placement of the 'Ctrl' & 'Alt' Keys

Is there a better idea than my observation below?
Which key is more frequently used with Microsoft Office during School days and in Work?
For me, the “Ctrl” key e.g. for “bold” or “undo” commands in Office software is frequent used.
Instead of moving you entire hand with more effort into a awkward position to execute the keyboard shortcuts, would reversing the position of “Ctrl” and “Alt” keys provide a least effort and more ergonomic way of executing Computer commands?

  • Disable the CTRL+ALT+DELETE when log in xp T60

I have T60 and i just installed lenovo xp again, and every time i log in XP i need to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, how i can get this uncomfortable think off?
I just want to sing by my fingerprint

You have to install the Thinkvantage Fingerprint Software, then configure it to act as the logn provider.
Remember, you can also set Single Sign On and enroll your prints then configure those speicifc fingers to allow BIOS logon and assuming you are starting thes ystesm ffom a cold boot,  use the finger at bios, sit back and watch it logon to windows
IF YOU ARE HI SEC MODE / POSSIBLY EVERY OTHER MODE TOO AND YOU JUST RESTART FROM ONE WINDOWS SESSION TO ANOTTHER W/O POWERING OFF.... SSO doesn't apply and you will have to swipe at Windows logon.
A TIP, if a Thinkpad is configured for BIOS logon and the ThinkVantage Fingerprint software is removed or the entire OS is reinstalled....you can still makeshift a SSO:
    1. Most likely, the thinkpad will preserve your BIOS biometric finerprint logon settings
    2. Avoid resintalling the Thinkvantage finter software and use tweakui to set the Windows Autologn function. Since you've successfully used your fignerprint to start the laptop, it is still as secure as it would be if you had Windows Thinkvantage Finger soft installed but your SSO is now Windows provided but the user experience is the same and just as fast.
Don't just sit there, take a second and use the Kudo's button to compliment the people who help you.

  • To be able to edit images in ps from lr I have to launch lr with the ctrl, alt, and shift keys pressed in win 8.1.

This was the resolution by adobe techs. Was only supposed to be necessary for each catalog once if I check its integrity, but that turns out to not be the case. Don't even need the integrity check for this to work. (Uninstalling and reinstalling everything a couple of times didn't help.)
    Fix, anyone?

    Hi,
Since it works fine with same command in Windows 7, this issue may be caused by Windows 8.1 client side.
According to the error message, I find an blog for Exchange server side. For your reference:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2010/02/04/3409289.aspx
Just in case, please open IIS manager and switch to Default Web Site. Right-click Default Web Site, and then click Edit Bindings to double check the configuration for HTTP:
    1. Make sure the value of Hostname is empty.
    2. Ensure the port is 80.
For your question, I have test this command in Windows 8, it works fine.
Is there any extra software installed on it? please try to run Windows with clean boot, also we can try this within a new Windows.
Besides, please try to telnet port 5985 and manually open this port in firewall ports.
    Thanks

  • Disable Window keys ALT+TAB, CTRL+ALT+DEL

Hello i am developing an application in which i need to catch the ALT+TAB and CTRLALT+DEL key events and handle it in my own way.
The default action of showing the next window or the task manager should not take place.
In the event handler i have given
    eventName.consume();
also. But the default handling is also done.
How do i stop the default action from being done?

Windows will not allow any application to catch the CTRL+ALT+DEL keystroke. In Windows NT-kernel OSes, this keystroke brings up a menu which, among other things, allows the user to change his or her password. If an application could intercept CTRL+ALT+DEL, it could present itself in such a way as to look just like that dialog. Then, if a user typed his or her password into that dialog, the program could log or transmit that password plaintext, severely violating security.
All sorts of exploits like that would be possible. This is why you can't block system keystrokes.
Is there any particular reason you need to override this behavior? Perhaps we can help you find another solution to whatever problem made you decide you wanted to catch those keystrokes in the first place.

  • Ctrl Alt Del and Task manager not working

Hi, Ive been having a problem getting task manager to run at all. On a fresh reboot, if I use the ctrl alt del function the according screen will come up like normal, and I will click on task manager. It bring me back to my desktop and nothing pops up.
Its not running in my task bar or anything. Then if I try to use the ctrl alt del function again, nothing happens. Ive tried running task manager straight from the start menu, but then I get an error saying that the version of that file is not compatible with
the version of windows I am running, which is 64 bit W7. It just started happening on my system a few days ago and I have changed nothing the past few days. I have tried to do a system restore, but to my idiocy, I did not know I needed to manually create restore
points. So I can only restore to yesterday which would fix nothing. I have run antivirus and anti spyware programs and they have shown no problems and my hard drive only has a 1% disk fragmentation. Is there a way to uninstall and re download a 64 bit compatible
version of the windows 7 task manager? Or is there a separate reason why it is not working? Thankyou

Also try it By Registry Editor :
    Start --> Run --> regedit --> ok
    Then
    Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
    Name: DisableTaskMgr
    Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0=Disablethis key, that is Don't Disable, Enable TaskManager

The first fix did not work, I tried doing the second one but there is no system folder in
    Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
The only one its showing is an explorer folder.

  • Ctrl/Alt Keys not Working in Parallels

    Hi,
I'm running Illustrator CS6 using Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7. It appears that the ctrl/alt keys do not work. Has anyone found a solution? I've tried resetting my preferences and restarting my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciaed.

Although this is an old thread, I also seem to be having the same sort of issues with Illustrator CS2 in Snow Leopard running under Parallels Desktop 9.
Re. the proposed solution, there does not seem to be a 'Virtual Machine -> Configure -> Options -> Advanced -> Optimize modifier keys for games' option in Desktop 9 - or I've not found it.
I will pursue this in the Parallels forums, but if anyone here has found a solution, I'd be interested to hear it.

  • How to disable CTRL+ALT+S on Win8

I have an HP notebook (Pavilion 17 or something) with Windows 8 64-bit.
I mainly use it (and primarily bought it) to play video games.
The shortcut CTRL+ALT+S (which opens system information) interferes with playing video games as I use those keys when doing so and far too often at the same time.
How do I disable the CTRL+ALT+S shortcut?
I mean besides a clean install of Windows without any HP programs, obviously.

    Hello @jdk21,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I have read your post on how you are looking to disable the CTRL + ALT + S combination on your notebook computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To disable this combination, I recommend performing a clean boot on your computer. This can be done by following the steps in this document on How to perform a clean boot in Windows. This should help boot your system with a minimal set of drivers and software, enabling your system to keep the settings changed with the keyboard combination.
If the issue continues, I recommend following the steps below by proceeding to this file location:
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\HP Help and Support
    Right click HP Support Information
    Click properties
Click the box next to shortcut key
Hit backspace so the field says 'none'
    Apply
    Done!
(Note, If you can't access the folder above you need to show hidden & system files. In a file explorer window click the view tab at the top, then click options on the right, select 'change folder and search options' if prompted. go to the view tab in the popup. check show hidden files, folders, drives. uncheck hide protected operating system files. apply)

  • Ctrl Alt Delete

Some times the Computer freezes, but I can still use the mouse. I have tried wating for the processor to catch up but that does not seam to be the issue. When the freeze acures The Ctrl-Alt-Delete menue will not appear. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button for an unsafe shutdown. I have ran a virus scan and come up with nothing. What should I do when this problem acures. Could it be a problem with the OS? I am at a total loss. please help.

Try turning off your computer then restarting it with the little One Key button next to the power button. If some windows files are corrupt, they will be fixed by this. You just have to follow the instructions on screen.

  • CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys are sticking (not physically)

I am having a problem with the T-61p I have been using for 2 years now.
About once every 2 days Windows thinks that either the CTRL, the ALT or the SHIFT key is held down.  I only notice this when my mouse's left click or my arrow keys starts behaving funny (like opening dialogs when clicking on icons or highlighting text on a page in MS Word) instead of moving the cursor as they should.
When this starts happening, pressing the CTRL, ALT and SHIFT buttons causes the strange behavior to stop.
None of the keys are physically stuck down.  I am using an external keyboard with my laptop closed and docked.  I have tried switching keyboards, and I get the same results with brand new Logitech keyboards.
What could this be?  Has anyone seen this problem before?
    Your help is much appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum!
It sounds like you've inadvertently turned on the Sticky Keys accessibility feature.  Since you didn't mention which operating system you're using, I can't tell you how to turn it off.  Trying searching for Sticky Keys in Help in the Start button menu.
    Hope this helps!
