Configuration of the Build Controller in TFS

For automation of testcases(Coded UI test) & create new Build Definition of Team project in Team Explorer, whether Build Controller need to be configured in TFS server. What is the role of Build Controller Configuration in automation?

Hi Nazimanasir,
Thanks for your post.
Yes, you need to install and configure the TFS Build Server for your current collection, then new Build Controller and new Build agent in TFS Build Server. And
you need select Run the Service interactively in your TFS Build Service properties if you want run Code UI test in build definition. Please refer to the detailed information in this document:

    Hi Nazimanasir,
You can automate a testcase by attaching a test method to it (and you can start the test manually using VS & MTM but to automatically kick start after a build you would need team build). To create a build definition you would need a build controller (at
least one in an offline state)
The first step in the continuous deployment (or integration) is to automate the build. To automate we need to configure TFS build, controller & agents. TFS build automation is broad topic. Microsoft have put together some good resource here http://www.visualstudio.com/get-started/overview-of-get-started-tasks-vs
And to be specific about the role of build controller, its job is to queue build requests (few other lightweight tasks like labelling version control, reporting build status etc) and send them to the available build agent, which performs the actual build on
build server. You can get more details on how to configure build controller here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee330987.aspx

  • Configuration of the BRAM controller

    Hi guys,
Using the core generator, I have put in my design a custom BRAM suiting my needs.
    This BRAM :
    - is a true dual port, 64 kB BRAM
    - does not use EN pins (it is always enabled)
    - has each of the port A and port B use a WEN pin of width 1
    - does not use reset pins
The problem I have is that my two BRAM controllers (on the data and instruction sides) were generated automatically with my MicroBlaze processor, and they present a BRAM interface that was the default one, and that is not compatible with my custom BRAM (it as EN pins, its has WEN pins of width 4, and a reset...).
So what I'd like to do is configure those controllers so as to make them compatible with my custom BRAM. Problem is I'm only given a very limited parameters to configure in the XPS, and those are not relevant to what I want to do (they dont concern the BRAM interace).
So my question is, how can I configure those controllers to make their BRAM interface compatible with my custom BRAM block ?
Thanks in advance for any help :)

    Hi Kanchan,
    Thanks for your post.
What’s the version of your TFS?
Please ensure the build agent(s) created and enabled under your build controller. You can check the TFS Build Service information in your TFS Admin Console>>Build Configuration tab. For more information about TFS Build Server, please refer to this

    Hi Kanchan,
So on each computer, you create a local user account that is a member of the Administrators group, and use the same account and password on each machine(controller and Agent), am I right?
Could you enable the detailed log message?

  • TFS 2012 Update 4 - Build Alert - "A build controller or agent's status changes" doesn't work correctly

We are running TFS2012 Update 4 and have set up some build alerts.  The alert we have set up is "A build controller or agent's status changes".  When this alert is first set up the default filters which are included are for fields "Team
Project" and "Status".  However through much testing we have discovered that when either of these fields are included as a filter the alert doesn't work.  When other fields are used in the filter the alert works fine (as long
as neither of the stated fields are included), indeed if all alert filters are removed then the alert also works successfully.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there an issue with the fields "Team Project" and "Status"?

    Hi T Quinn,
    Thanks for your post.
I reproduced this scenario in my TFS 2012 Update 4 Server and received the same result.
For this scenario, please submit it to Microsoft Connect Feedback portal at:
https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio. Microsoft engineers will evaluate them seriously.

  • How to configure the GPIB controller in LABVIEW or MAX to send UNLISTEN and UNTALK when each message ends?

In a PC to PC GPIB configuration, one PC is used as a non-controller and it reads either LACS or TACS status bits continuously. It apears that the controller PC does not send UNTALK and UNLISTEN at the end of each message. The non-controller reads and writes therefor times-out.
What is the correct message synchronisation for a non-controller?
    I use Labview 6, PCIIA, WIN98SE.
    Thanks.

Are you using LabVIEW as the controller, non-controller, or both?
NI-488.2 does have a configuration option to enable unaddressing. I am not sure of where it is in LabVIEW, but if you search for unaddressing, you should find some information on it. With unaddressing, NI-488. will unaddress the device after communicating with it.
If you are not using LabVIEW as the non-controller, National Instruments does have a software package called NI-Device that may help. This is an API designed for non-controllers. It does not currently have a LabVIEW interface. It works under C++ with a PCI-GPIB board.
A third option is to rewrite your device application. Your device should really not care about TACS or LACS as you read them from the status register Your device
should only look for LACS, DCAS, and perhaps DTAS (if you desire triggering). When it is LACS, it should read data. After a read has completed, it should interpret the data and get ready for a response. It is only at that moment that the device should look for TACS (and DCAS). It is hard to put a flowchart here, but if you design the flow of a standard instrument, you will see some patterns about when to look for certain status bits.

    Hi Hooi,
I'd like to know whether you can build successfully in your local machine with MSBuild. You have to build succeed with MSBuild beore you can build with TFS Build since TFS build use MSBuild as its default compiler.
From the error message, you might build with wrong platform for your project. Please check if the build platfrom is proper. If you have customization of your build process template, it would be better to elaborate the reproduce steps and customization details.
    Best regards,

    Hi All,

Please suggest the solution to solve the above issue.
    Thanks,
    Rajukumar

    Hi Rajukumar,
    Thanks for your reply.
I think the reason is TFS 2010 build process template’s activities created using v10.0
version assemblies in VS 2010, not all these v10.0 build activities support be opened using VS 2013(v12.0 assemblies).

  • Hosted Build Controller does not build test project when using GitContinuousDeploymentTemplate.12.xaml

So basically my unittest project using mspec is not even built and copied to the outputfolder even though I build the sln file. This happens only if I put in a azure deployment environment in the build. It works with exactly the same parameters if I just
remove the azure deployment parameter in the same template. I really don't get why it's impossible to run unit tests and fail the build before deploying to staging. Is it supposed to be like this?

    Hi Espen,
I would like to know what you mean when you say "put in a Azure deployment environment in the build", and whether you have run a post script during the build process. Please give out more details about your scenario, or share you build log here. You can
check whether it's build fine locally by using MSBuild or build directly with Visual Studio.
Maybe you can check whether the Azure environment has the right version of mspec test adapter. Or use Nuget package restore feature to include the needed files in your solution before building. If the build related to hosted build controller, you can configure
an on-premise build controller for VSO. See this
    thread for more information.

By Azure deployment variable I mean "Windows Azure Deployment Environment" variable which you can configure under the Process tab after rightclicking the build definition and clicked "Edit build definition" in Visual Studio.
I actually figured out what was wrong though. When "Windows Azure Deployment Environment" is set, the build target is set to <your_azure_project>:Publish. This target probably only builds the projects useful for that particular project, hence the unittest
project is not built. I fixed the issue by adding a msbuild argument under 2.Build->5.Advanced->MSBuild arguments. I had to set it to "/t <your_azure_project>:Publish;Build" and all worked well. Notice the order of the targets though. If I used
Build first, the whole build failed with some error trying to some virtual web folder. Also, <your_azure_project> is not entirely correct. At least for me it's named like My.Azure.Project, but the build target is My_Azure_Project.
I don't really know if it's supposed to be this way, but it looks to me like a small bug in the template at least.

    Hi NMS,
    Thanks for your post.
Click the Restart to restart your hmf-tfs-001 TFS Build Server, then check result.
If Restart this TSF Build Server still cannot make your Build Controller and Build Agent to
Ready, please try to delete this Build Controller and Build Agent, then recreate them under this current TFS Build Server.

  • Unable to connect on premises build controller to Visual Studio Online account

I've been looking into VSO for our build process, but I'm having some difficulty on the basic set up.
We use Unity3D and would require an on premises build controller. I've created a VM and attempted to set up a build controller using this article for details:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181712.aspx
I'm able to open the build service configuration wizard and I get to the "Connect to Team Project Collection" window. However, when I attempt to add my server, using my username and password (which is also the global admin), I get a TF31003 error.
I've verified that I have build permissions, but I keep getting this error everytime I attempt to connect the controller to VSO.
I also attempted to use a custom build account, which had Build Service and Build Administrator membership. It also got the same error.
What could be causing this issue?

    Hi Jason,
    Thanks for your post.
Please follow the detailed steps in this
article to configure and connect On-premise Build Service for your VSO account, if still receive the same issue, please share you received the error under which detailed step.
When connecting to VSO account in Build Service, you need provide the user which added in your VSO account.

  • Converged architecture : when the mob Controller goes down, all AP connected to Mob. Agent are disconnected

    Hello
I configured two  SW 3650 in a converged architecture.
    SW3560-1 is Mob controller
    SW3560-2 is Mob agent.
When I shut down the Mob controller, APs associated to the Mob. Agent reload, and could not join anymore to the Mob Agent.
A debug "capawap ap error" on sw3560-2 give this error:
"*Sep  5 07:51:52.144: *%LWAPP-3-AP_LICENSE_REQUEST_ERR: 1 wcm:  License request failed for AP 7c0e.ceb8.f5d0 - AP License Request timedout, ensure MC link is up, Resettting AP"
Both SW3560 has a valid license for 6 AP
So I guess that the Mob Ctrl in a converged architecture, is vital. There is no redundance.
    Could you please help.
    Michel Misonne

    Hi Michel,
When I shut down the Mob controller, APs associated to the Mob. Agent reload, and could not join anymore to the Mob Agent.
When MC is down, if MA connected AP rebooted that is strange. As Sultha mentioned, without MC, AP won't able to register as AP licence hold on MC.
Where is the SVI defined for AP management vlan ? Is DHCP given for AP from 3650-1 ? We need to find out what triggers MA connected AP to reboot.
Configuring both 3650 as MC is not an ideal solution (make it bit complex & roaming is not optimized if these two switches in same building)

  • The build directory of the test run either does not exist or access permission is required.

i am trying to run automated tests
i follow the steps in the web but when i have 2 issues that does not solve
    1. i created console project and add build definition without drop folder and queue builds that success.
    2. i created C# unit test and add build definition and run it from VS and it worked and done what i want to do.
    3. i built lab with 1 machine and define the controller on this pc ( the machine in the lab is another pc)
    4. i created test suite with test cases and from vs 2013 i associated automation nethod that i created in 2.
    5. when i try to associate the builds for the test plan i have a PROBLEM(1):
this happened every new build that i try to assign - all the builds appears after refresh and when i press assign to plan button
a pop up shown with error : " The build that you selected for this plan no longer exist " but he chose it in build in use but there no work item under it - the list is empty even that there are 2 tests under this test suite.
and than when i try to run the automated tests i have this PROBLEM(2):
The build directory of the test run either does not exist or access permission is required. and the test failed.
    Please Help
    Roey

    Hi Rory,
Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.
    According to the error message:
    (1) a pop up shown with error : " The build that you selected for this plan no longer exist "
I tried to create a build definition without the drop folder location for unit test solution from the VS IDE, and then I try to select the Build in use option to add the Available builds, then click this Assign to plan. I found that I get same error message
with yours like the following screen shot.
However, when we try to create a build definition with drop folder location for this same unit test solution and then build successfully in the VS IDE.
After you add the Available builds and then click this Assign to plan in the MTM, it work fine.
Therefore, I assume that the issue is related to that you did not specify a build directory for automated test case. MTM need to know where is the drop location of the build building your tests.
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20033217/couldnt-run-my-test-using-microsoft-test-manager
In addition, I did some research about the problem 2:"The build directory of the test run either does not exist or access permission is required. and the test failed."
I know that the error message occur in either of the following conditions:
    1. The account under which test controller is running does not have read permission on the build directory. (The build directory is same as the drop location of build associated with this test run.)
    2. The build directory itself does not exist.
So please refer the following blog to check this issue:
