Configuring JSF (ClassNotFoundException)

Hi,
I have a standard JEE compliant web-app that uses JSF. Since J2EE 5 and further app servers are mandated to provide JSF implementation I’m not including JSF libs in the war. The app deploys successfully on JBoss, and I believe it will deploy on other app servers.
With WebLogic 11gR1 I’m running into trouble – my web app fails to deploy with ClassNotFoundExceptions.
First it was javax.faces.* classes that were not found.
After searching docs I added weblogic.xml with <library-ref> to jsf 1.2 and deployed jsf library from \wlserver_10.3\common\deployable-libraries\jsf-1.2.war.
This should be enough (I thought :)) but now jsf 1.2 dependencies (apache commons) are not found.
Question: am I supposed to package jsf dependencies with my web app to be used by WL? Strangely enough - jsf-myfaces-1.1.7.war and jsf-ri-1.1.1.war in \deployable-libraries are packaged with its dependencies.
What is the correct way to configure web app use JSF in WL?
Thanks,
Valery

Are you sure you are using JSF 1.2 and not JSF 1.1
When you use JSF1.1 you need the following libraries:
- commons-beanutils.jar
- commons-collections.jar
- commons-digester.jar
- commons-logging.jar
- commons-logging-api.jar
- jsf-api.jar
- jsf-impl.jar
- jstl.jar
- standard.jar
In the case of JSF1.2 the following libraries should be sufficient:
- jsf-api.jar (for example Specification-Version: 1.2MR2)
- jsf-impl.jar (for example Specification-Version: 1.2MR2)
- jstl-api-1.2.jar
- jstl-impl-1.2.jar
- jsf-facelets.jar (when you also use facelets)
"What is the correct way to configure web app use JSF in WL?"
- You can package the libraries with your application or you create a deployable library
- The benefit of using deployable libaries is that your deployment file is smaller
- Note when you have multiple application deployed that use the deployed library that classes are loaded for every application separately
(WebLogic has application classloader isolation).
"Since J2EE 5 and further app servers are mandated to provide JSF implementation I’m not including JSF libs in the war."
It is? You always have to include your jsf-impl files as they contain tld's that must be loaded through the WEB-INF/lib loader.

    Thanks,

    It seems to me that a library is missing...
    for example in directory \common\lib of your tomcat
    you should have something like
    myfaces-impl.jaror something like
    jsf-impl.jar in the webapps\ <your application> \WEB-INF\lib
    Inside the jar file you should see in META-INF directory a file like
    jsf_core.tld... and so on

    How did you install IM,via pkgadd or via Comms Installer ?
    I have set in iim.conf

    Here is the error in the svc log:
    Is there some dependency again? or problems because i have not installed in the default path?
    Check if you have installed SUNWiimdv package installed,it is a shared component of IM.

    All my JSF code work, but I don't want this annoying message to display. Anybody knows what it is saying about message? Thanks.

    So you don't know what Facelets is? Why have you added this line to the faces-config then?
    If I check the requirements of the Trinidad component libraty, I read nowhere that Facelets is required. So you can just remove that line. But if you actually want to use Facelets instead of JSP, then you indeed need to install facelets.
    For links and information just consult their own websites. Install Google at your machine and use the search terms wisely.

    Please help me in configuring JSF 1.2.

    If you are new to JSF, then I'd try and simplify the environment in which you are working as the first step to achieving a successful outcome.
    JSF 1.2 is a certified and well tested component of WLS, so we know it works. I'm not sure of the effect of all those additional modules you are adding in there -- it appears as if you have gotten a Faces implementation instantiated, but there could be some form of version difference/conflict since it can't find a method its looking for.
    Using Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oepe/oepe_11115.html) you can build yourself out a pretty simple JSF application to get started from and deploy it to a WLS server. This would remove all the additional libraries you currently have, provide you with a bundled applicaton to deploy and give you a pretty good environment from which you can learn and experiment with JSF.

  • Problems while deploying a JSF/ ADF Faces App to Apps Server 10.1.3.0.1

    Dear All,
    I built a JSF based application (Using ADF Faces Components) developed in JDeveloper 10.1.3.1.0 (Application Configuration: [JSF, ADF BC]. The application is running fine with the embedded OC4J intance (automatically aunch by JDeveloper).
    I am now trying to deploy it on the installed Oracle Application Server (running on the same local machine). The details of the versioning for different components in this App server are as follows:
    1. OracleAS J2EE 10.1.3.0.0
    2. Oracle ADF 10.1.3.1.0
    The deployment steps I followed (as given in Chapter 34 of 'Oracle ADF - Developer's Guide for Forms/4GL Developers') seems to be running smoothly. This is because the deploy process ends up showing no erros in the message window.
    However when I tried to test the application with a browser using the Apps Server URL (HTTP://localhost:8888/<my-app>/<firstfile.jspx>), I am finding 'Page not found error'.
    I also tried a manual deployment (using deploy to a WAR file then copy the resulting war & ear files and the xml descriptor file to the Apps server's http root) and gives the war file URL in the browser.
    In this case now I am getting the following error page:
    =====================================================
    The XML page cannot be displayed
    Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
    An invalid character was found in text content. Error processing resource
    'http://localhost:8888/HousingWithADF.war'.
    =====================================================
    Any idea?
    Regards,
    Irfan Ilyas
    PS: I am doubtful about creation of Deployment Descriptors step as the documentation is not very clear about exactly which descriptors we need to create. Using my own idea, I tried to create J2EE descriptor, and one tld (taglibrary) file. However, the manual war deployment generates only the tld file in the deploy folder.

    Thanks for the hint.
    OBSERVATION #1:
    After looking through the administration console for OC4J instance, I found my application name with UP status. When drill-down further, the console gives me the URL which can be used to test the application.
    While using the URL, a different error message was found:
    URL: http://localhost:8888/KFUPMHousing/
    Error:
    ====================
    HTTP 403:(Forbidden)
    ================
    You are not authorized to view this page
    You might not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied.
    From my experience of Microsoft IIS, I know here I may need to configure the folder permissions for a web-user. But exactly which user and where it is defined (at OS Level or in AS), I am not much sure.
    Can you elaborate?
    OBSERVATION #2:
    The log text for my application shows the following error (for the attempt I did with the URL shown above)
    Log Text
    07/01/05 22:43:38.62 HousingWithADF: JspServlet: unable to dispatch to requested page: Exception:java.io.FileNotFoundException: C
    :\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\j2ee\home\applications\HousingWithADF\HousingWithADF\HosReqInfo.jspx (The system cannot find the file specified)
    However, I can browse the file on my local disk in the path specified with a little change in the path. The file is found in 'pages' folder within the last folder,named HousingWIthADF. I tried to move the file in the exact path specified in the log and now finding the 'Page not found' error.
    Any idea?

  • JSF Getting Started Example not Working

    I've installed and configured JSF according to CoreJSF 1st Chapter example "A simple JSF Application" (available at http://horstmann.com/corejsf/). The only different thing i've done is to put the jsp pages in a separate folder within the root web application folder. The JSF seems to be properly configured, since i'm able to see the UI components in the login page. However, once I click login button, the application takes me once more to the login page (same page that put the request). I figure it is a problem with the navigation file, I've changed the faces-config.xml including "jsf/welcome.jsp" as target since "jsf" is the separate directory I created for JSP files. I does not work (not getting exceptions though). Any prompt help will be highly appreciated.

  • Announcing: Developing JSF Portlets with WebLogic Portal Whitepaper

    Just Released: Developing JSF Portlets with WebLogic Portal Whitepaper
    A supplemental developer's guide has been published to help guide WLP 10.x customers that wish to use JSF as the web framework for building portlets on WebLogic Portal. This is a sizable document (150 pages) that covers a large number of topics. It also coaches developers on best practices and common pitfalls.
    Important: It also clarifies the supported configuration of JSF within Portal Web Projects. Workshop for WebLogic by default configures a web project in a configuration that is not supported by WebLogic Portal. The guide explains how to address this:
    * Change from the unsupported MyFaces JSF implementation to the supported Sun Reference Implementation (RI)
    * Change from the unsupported "client" STATE_SAVING_METHOD to the supported "server"
    The guide can be downloaded here:

    Hi Peter!
    First, I wish to thank you for the great work.
    We followed your whitepaper and managed to deploy a JSF portlet on WLS.
    But we are not able to register it (consume it) as remote portlet in Oracle Portal 10.1.4. The error log is as follows:

  • JDev 10.1.2 - JSF 1.1_02 - error hangs entire application

    Hi,
    I'm building my first JSF application and an issue has arisen during testing which has us all stumped! Whenever an error occurs for a particular user, the entire application then falls over and all other users then see (different) error messages too.
    Let me try to describe the scenario in detail.
    1. 10 users are using the main page of the application quite happily.
    2. Another user logs in and visits a different page in the same application. This page contains a bug.
    3. The application serves the error page to this user as an unhandled exception was thrown when processing the request.
    4. The other 10 users also get the error page even though they have not visited the buggy page! The application has fallen over and requires the container to be restarted.
    Steps 1-3 are obvious, but I don't understand step 4 - why should the application fail to continue serving bug-free pages to all other users? Is this the expected behaviour for JSF applications? (Other platforms I've used don't behave this way.)
    I can easily replicate this issue by introducing a typo to a component's EL binding. The initial error message is
    javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Error getting property 'thisisatypo' from bean of type com.mypackage.MyBeanAll other users then see a secondary error message:
    java.lang.IndexOutOfBoundsExceptionOther applications on the app server are not affected.
    Is there a way to configure or recode the application to better handle exceptions so that the application itself doesn't hang and other users can continue to use it? Is it a threading issue? Or is this an issue with the application server, which requires reconfiguration to fix it?
    A thread on Sun's JSF forum mentions a similar issue, but no-one has answered it: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=881&threadID=5049367
    My environment:
    JSF: v1.1_02 (Sun JSF RI)
    IDE: JDeveloper 10.1.2.3.0
    Java: 1.4.2_06
    App Server: Oracle App Server 10g (OC4J 9.0.4.0.0)
    (Upgrading to more recent versions of JSF or application server are not options at the moment - my organisation has already scheduled upgrades sometime within the next 12 months or so, but I cannot bring them forward!)

    Hi Frank, thanks for your reply.
    I did indeed manually configure JSF for JDev 10.1.2 & Oracle App Server 10g (OC4J 9.0.4), following the instructions provided by Oracle at [http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/howtos/10g/jsf_howto/jsf.html|http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/howtos/10g/jsf_howto/jsf.html]
    I have just spent some time porting my application to JDev 10.1.3 & OC4J 10.1.3, as you suggest, and I can confirm that the issue does not appear using this platform.
    However, my organisation does not have this version of Oracle App Server in production. As I indicated in my first post, an upgrade from 9.0.4 to a newer version (tbc) should occur sometime in the next 12 months, but we undertook this project on the basis that JSF would work on Oracle App Server 10g (OC4J 9.0.4), as per the "how to" above.
    If this is not the correct forum to pursue this issue, where, or with whom, should I?
    Many thanks,

    Hi,
    I am trying to run the demo according to OTN article:
    How To Use JSF with JDeveloper 10g
    At this stage, I am just trying to see if JSF works. I am using JSF1.1.01 download withe Jdeveloper 1012(build 1811), and I got the following error

  • Trying to custom JSF created with NetBeans 5.5

    Hello,
    I'm trying to create an enterprise application using JSF new technology. I have find an easy way to do this with NetBeans 5.5 with SJSAS 9.0.
    I have an Apache Derby database connected and configurated with my enterprise application. I have created the Entity Classes from this database. JSF pages from Entity Classes are generated and persistence unit is configured successfully. All this steps had maked using NetBeans methods. I have feel a lot of tutorials and guides.
    When I play the enterprise application, a list of classes appears and you can obtain a list of the objects loaded into database of the selected class. When you have obtained this list of objects, you can create a new object or database row, you can view data of a selected object and finally edit this data.
    OK, now I would like to custom this JSF structure created with NetBeans. For example, I would like to call New.jsp page from any JSF class, from index.jsp. Always this error appears:
    java.lang.IllegalStateException: No FacesContext is available to process this request. This is most likely due to the request being sent to the wrong path.
    The same error I have obtained trying to copy-paste code from a JSF Page generated with NetBeans, the same exception appears only pasting this pice of code:
    <%@page contentType="text/html"%>
    <%@page pageEncoding="UTF-8"%>
    <%@taglib prefix="f" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core"%>
    <%@taglib prefix="h" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html"%>
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
    <title>JSP Page</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <f:view>
    <h1><h:outputText value="JavaServer Faces" /></h1>
    </f:view>
    </body>
    </html>
    A way to solve this exception is using a JSF configuration. I have look for info about JSF configuration but I don't know how to configure faces-config.xml file. It seems is file where are configurated JSF enviroment: converted, managed beans and navigation rules are configurated by NetBeans.
    Could you please help me to custom this JSF NetBeans code?
    Or a tutorial or guide where JSF NetBeans 5.5 code is used with an enterprise application SJSAS 9.0 and a Apache Derby database.
    I have look for any example or possible solution during weeks but, I can't find anything that I can use to custom NetBeans code. All examples are too basic and never use an enterprise application.
    Thank you a lot!
    Kind regards,
    Ricard

    Thank you for reply.
    The web.xml configuration file is configured by NetBeans:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <web-app version="2.5" xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_2_5.xsd">

    <param-value>false</param-value>
    </context-param>
    <context-param>
    <param-name>com.sun.faces.validateXml</param-name>
    <param-value>true</param-value>
    </context-param>
    <context-param>
    <param-name>javax.faces.STATE_SAVING_METHOD</param-name>
    <param-value>client</param-value>
    </context-param>
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>Faces Servlet</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>javax.faces.webapp.FacesServlet</servlet-class>
    <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>Faces Servlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/faces/*</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    <session-config>
    <session-timeout>
    30
    </session-timeout>
    </session-config>
    <welcome-file-list>
         <welcome-file>
    index.jsp
    </welcome-file>
    </welcome-file-list>
    </web-app>
    I think all info in the first post is necessary to explain my problem.
    Thank you to offer me a solution but, I don't understand you and I think there is no solution for my question:
    I would like to create a JSP like New.jsp created by NetBeans using JSF but, I won't to use New.jsp. How I can configure my enterprise application to use this new file?
    I'm sorry for my english, I explain better I know.
    Anyone understand my question? May you offer an example or guide or tutorial about this?
    Thank you!
