Configuring Mail Program

I am trying to configure my internet mail to the mail program on my Mac and it is not recognizing it. I already spoke to my internet provider and everything is working fine on their end. Any help would be appreciated.

First tell us what you have done to configure Mail for your ISP. For additional help select Mail Help from Mail's Help menu and search for "account." There should be an article on how to add a new account.
You will need several items for your configuration:
1. The type of email account - POP or IMAP.
2. The incoming and outgoing mail server domain names.
3. Your email username and password.

Right click on the email  in the left hand pane.  Select Mark as Unread to return it to an unread state.  Click Delete to move it to the trash or file it in a folder if you have any configured.  You may need to click the show button on the upper left hand side of the window to see your folders.  The + sign at the bottom of that pane allows you to add a new folder.

  • How do I configure Entourage to be default mail program?

After problems with the Mac Mail program, I have switched everything over to Entourage. I can't, however, figure out how to make it my default mail program. I'd like Entourage to open when I try and send an email from an internet site, but can't figure out how to switch from Mail opening to Entourage.
I have set it as the default mail program in iPhoto already.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  • How do I add a Gmail account to my Mail program

    Hi
Until now, I have only had @verizon.net email accounts. I now how a @gmail.com email account
I don't know how to configure my Mail program so I can receive gmail to my computer, and not have to get it using a Browser.
I have attended to configure, but it does not work: I get the following:
For Incomgin Mail Server I use:
    mail.gmail.com
    I get this response:
The POP server “mail.gmail.com” is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the “Incoming Mail Server” field. If it still doesn’t respond, the server might be temporarily unavailable.

First off Gmail supports "imap" which will allow you to keep your computer Mail app, and gmail account in sync. I would suggest you setting gmail up for imap instead of POP.
    1. Open Mail go to preferences, select Accounts.
    2. In the account window in the left pane "Accounts" press the "+" button at the bottom to add a new account.
    3. An Account window will appear asking for information, select IMAP for account type, Description put what ever you wish such as "Gmail IMAP" or if you are going to have more that one accunt fro gmail the "User Gmail IMAP", Enter your Name, and your new Gmail address ex. "[email protected]".
    4. Enter the information for incoming mail. In the incoming mail server box type: imap.gmail.com, Your user name should appear in the User Name box automatically if it is incorrect the correct it, enter your password that you use to access the mail from the web with gmail. Then press Continue.
If all the info is correct it will let you continue, as mail at that point actually goes out to that gmail server and attempts a login with that account and password, if it fails at this point then some info like your user name and password are incorrect. If it all goes well go to step 5.
    5. The next screen will be the Outgoing mail, in the Outgoing mail server: box type: smtp.gmail.com, select authentication and put in your username and password for that account like you did on the prev step. Then press continue. Mail will again go out to that server and attempt a log in to very the information. If all goes well then mail will come back with an account summary window, you can then press continue.
That should do it, if it doesn't work post back.

  • How do I configure mail to keep email in my inbox longer other than archive?

Email in the Mail program stays in my inbox only so long and then it goes away.  I cannot figure out how to set email to stay there until I delete it or archive it.  Can someone point me to the configuration on this?  I'm using POP and IMAP accounts in the Mail app.  Thanks.

In the accounts preferences you can configure POP accounts to leave mail on the server.
If you don't have it set to leave mail on the server then whichever device reads the mail will have the mail downloaded to it.
That is the advantage of imap accounts. You can read from any device and the mail remains on the server unless you specifically move it.
By the way, comcast accounts can now be set up as imap in Mail.

There is no default for those entries. you need to set it up manually by using the custom label.

  • Clicking on an e-mail address will NOT open Windows Live Mail which is already the default mail program which is already set as the default mail program

Clicking on an e-mail address will NOT open Windows Live Mail. Windows Live mail is already set as my default e-mail program.

Sorry you're having this problem. I think it was previously reported only by Windows XP users.
When you reinstall, were you making Firefox your default browser? Some users have reported that ''not'' making Firefox the default browser was an effective workaround.
However, you may have success with this approach, suggested by a user in another thread, which appears to more thoroughly update the Windows registry:
    # Open Adobe Reader / Acrobat
    # Edit->Preferences
    # In the Categories column click 'General'
    # Near the bottom of the page click the button marked 'Select Default PDF Handler'
    # In the dialog, select 'Adobe Reader XI' (or Adobe Acrobat, as the case may be) and click 'Apply'
    # A Windows Configuration screen will appear. Allow it to do its stuff (takes a few minutes), then restart your computer when prompted.
Does that resolve the issue for you?

  • Default Mail Program and Mail

Rather than Mail.app that came with my iMac, I want to use Thunderbird as my default mail program which I have set as such in Preferences in both Mail and Thunderbird.
However, I keep receiving an occasional email in the Mail.app rather than in Thunderbird - and it doesn't even appear in Thunderbird but only in Mail.
I would like to receive all of my email in Thunderbird rather than Mail. How can I make sure this will happen? Should I rename Mail.app to something else?
I would appreciate any suggestions you may have; and also, if you have good reasons for this not to be done, please let me know in a kindly manner. Because I became use to using Thunderbird in my PC, I feel more comfortable with it and would like to continue using it.
    Thanks for your help.

This doesn’t make sense. What you’ve chosen as the default mail program is irrelevant here.
If Mail receives any messages, it has to be because (1) it’s running AND (2) it’s configured to automatically check for new mail AND (3) the accounts are configured to be included when automatically checking for new mail. It looks like you’re making it really hard for Mail to not download any messages...
And except in the case of a Gmail account (which allows messages to be downloaded only once by POP mail clients), receiving a message in Mail should have no bearing on you being able to receive that message in any other mail client as well if Mail is configured with the default account settings...
    More info, please.

  • My (postage stamp icon) mail program will not send outgoing mail - only receives, what's up with that?

My (postage stamp icon) mail program will not send outgoing mail - only receives mail.
Says the outgoing mail server is wrong, but Comcast says it's right - what's up with that?
Is there a way to reload the standard (postage stamp icon) mail program?

Clearly there's something wrong with the configuration. Reverting to some other mail application (whatever the 'standard' one is...) won't help.
What does the Connection Doctor (Mail -> Window -> Connection Doctor) have to say about it?
Chances are your username/password for your SMTP server are incorrect.

  • Gmail is giving my grandparents headaches in mail program

So i talked my grandparents into ditching their old windows 2000 machine for a new macbook.
I signed them up for a gmail acct. and set everything up in Leopards mail program and everything was great for about 4 weeks. Now they are constantly getting error messages from Mail that the password is being rejected. Occasionally it will work and let an email or 2 through. This is mostly occurs on sending but occasionally on recieving as well. Is gmail and osx mail just a bad combo or what? is there a better free email acct option out there that will work with osx mail?
And by the way, am I blind or has the search option disappeared for these forums?
    Thanks, tim

    they can try:
    Open Mail.app,
Go to Preferences, Account, select Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):, select the drop-down box "Edit" server List, click on "Advanced" button in the center, make sure the gmail User Name is input in the box (do not include @gmail.com), just the log-in name, make sure the password matches the password they set at gmail from the web interface. Also check and make sure the port for outgoing mail is set correctly, close windows and Save.
    Optional:
They can also go to gmail.com and click on troubleshooting POP or IMAP whichever they are using and there is also a section on password resets including step-by-step configuration of Apple Mail 3.0

  • SBC Global and Apple Mail program woes

So I have SBC Global mail account and I use Apple's mail program to manage and access my mail via POP3 configuration. About 5-10 times a day randomly throughout my Mail program asks me to enter my password because the server rejected it, I know the password is correct because it works other times. I then enter my password and check the box "use this one" and it gets the mail but later on in the day it will reject my password. I use a gmail and school email account in addition to my SBC one, and they all work fine, thus ruling out a Mail glitch. Perhaps there are settings, or a known problem with apple and SBC? Does anyone have any experience, tips, or the same problems?
    Thank you,
    TM

  • HT2500 How do you delete bulk mail folder in Mail program?

In my Mail program on my MacBook Air there is a Bulk Mail Folder usually full of annoying junk mail. How do I eliminate this folder so I don't get Bulk mail anymore?

    Hi Macmonter,
i have seen the complete post here and realised that your answer should have been selected as most useful, unfortunately Charlie7 didn't tried it and hence it was ignored. I still appreciate your experiemnt.
I am pretty new to this community thing, but i did a lot of experiments with Mail application and hence i m writing this post specifically which might be helpful to others. I use Yahoo Mail (only) for all online services like Facebook, G+, LinkedIn, Twitter etc. all possible. It's my central ID now and i cant change it any more. Going online and checking yahoo mail is sometimes very resource taking hence i decided to use mail client like Mail.app. Let me tell you that i personally tried all other mail apps including thunderbird but noticed one very imp thing that when u use Mail.app then your mails 7 their attachments are automatically indexed by Mac OS which is very important feature and when you search something then it searches within your mail also, this is really awesome. This will not happen if u use thunderbird or any other mail client. Also you get to use free Cloud with auto sync. Now this also tells you that I am stuck with 2 (idiotic) giants : Yahoo & Mac OSX Mail.
The thing is, Yahoo now uses IMAP (prior it was POP). IMAP has many advantages over POP for sure. Basically when you use multiple devices, filters and folders and want all those things in Sync. Google for more comparison, but let me tell you IMAP is really good. Now the problem is, Yahoo has powerful spam engine but it calls it 'Bulk Mail'. Apple also has powerful Spam Engine but they call it 'Junk'. So some how you have make apple understand that they are the same words, which is suggested by Mr. Macmonter which is really a great & very useful thing. If you mark 'Bulk Mail' folder as 'Use As Junk' then you are done. All messages from Bulk folder will be routed to Junk and you will see common Junk Folder.
I know there are people who dont want to see that Junk at all! And for that this is smart trick :
Configure your Yahoo as IMAP (which is default). Clear all messages from online Bulk Mail folder using browser login. Then Sync so all your online folders are downloaded if any and all your mails. Basically this is for people who has created online filters and folders (i have 12 folders)
Once your account is in Sync, disconnect. Export all your folders one by one slowly. It takes times if you have many mails and attachments. Once this is done successfully, DELETE this account!
Now create Yahoo POP account. Apple dont allow you to do this now, but there is trick. You will have to give wrong user-pass and shift to manual settings and there you can give correct server config which should be POP settings of Yahoo. And take this account online.
In online Yahoo Mail, set 'Do not download spam' under POP and Forwarders. So this will only start downloading Inbox messages. Remember POP dont see any other folders, hence we removed all filters and downloaded all folders. IT will download all mails coming to Inbox filtering Spam. So you never see spam. If you want to see some then you can go online periodically and check manually.
Now import your recently exported folders in this account and create filters and rules in Mail.app for routing of incoming messages for particular messages.
This gives you all old messages, pure inbox from yahoo, 2 way spam filter yahoo & Mac, and local routing of messages with index, smart folders and cloud! Only thing you dont get here is Sync with multiple devices if you have iMac, Air & iPhone. But there i suggest you to keep one of them as center for downloads and others should keep just 15days old copy. This will also save your resources!
    Enjoy..

  • Mail program on iMac

Hi, how can I find out why one of my email accounts on my iMac mail program has one of those triangles with the exclamation mark in the middle of it? I looked the the preferences, restarted computer... it says there is a problem with the network or server.... The other accounts are receiving messages fine. I appreciate any suggestions. I unplugged the router and modem for starters too. Thank you for any help.
    Julie

If some email accounts are working but one is not, forget about turning the computer on & off or restarting the router. You've not configured that email account properly. Check your spelling - I know, but working in tech it is amazing how many times people assume they entered their account information properly but didn't. Try re-entering your password and make sure caps lock is off - another common mistake. If those two aren't the solution find out exactly how it should be configured. Some mail servers want the full email address [email protected] while others just want the name bob. Also see if that email server uses alternate ports and what kind of authorization is required. Finally, I've found that sometimes everything looks good but the darn server still won't connect - delete that account from the email program and start over.

  • HT4759 Configuring Mail on desktop running 10.6.8

    Hey all,
My old iMac 24" desktop is still running 10.6.8 because I'm too cheap to buy RAM & upgrade (yeah, I know ... I should just spend the money).  At any rate, I used MobileMe and mac.com address for 10+ years and it stopped working yesterday.
I do have a year old MacBook Pro running 10.7.4 which I was able to use to set up my iCloud account and use the iCloud account to send/receive email through the Mail program on that machine.
So here's my question:  What's the best way to configure Mail on my old desktop running 10.6.8 now that MobileMe is kaput?
BTW, I added my iCloud account as an associated account using the Accounts feature under Mail preferences and it seems to be working (although the little gear next to the account name is constantly spinning).  Should I now just delete the associated MobileMe account?
(Incidentally, I tried calling Apple Support but ran into a brick wall.  I've paid $99/year for my mac.com account for over 10 years, and the guys on Apple Support just couldn't help me, because my desktop is out of its support contract.  What kind of customer support is that?)
Thanks for advice or links to appropriate on-line articles.
    Cheers,
    Bert

If you can't get your mail to work on Snow Leopard after June 30, you might want to try one of these approaches
    1. Configuring Mail in Snow Leopard
    2. Delete your mail account from Mail preferences and set it up again using the Mail Server Information.
Some users have apparently encountered issues using this information in pre-Lion set ups (I haven't), Roger Wilmut has kindly provided instructions for those who find themselves with this problem.
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
