Configuring MySQL on Mac OS 10.4.5

I recently downloaded MySQL Version 5.0.20a-max via socket (Server) 5.0.18 (Client Version) on my Mac. Everything seemed to install just fine. I even have the MySQL server in my preferences and it always seems to be running. I am using the MySQL admimistrator and I can connect with the host set at: localhost - but when I pop in a user name and password - I get access denied. So, I just log in with my login name without a password and I gain access at least to the admin window.
However, when I try and create a new database using YourSQL - I'm denied access to everything but the MySQL test database.
I've tried to set up a root account early on in the UNIX terminal, but I must have fouled something up, because every command I try and use from every help article I've read I'm still denied access - I've even tried to run an uninstall of the MySQL installation and I keep getting the no such directory exists.
How can I remove this app and start over - or can I somehow get in the admin and reset my password.
Everything seems to work up to a point. It's like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but I'm denied access to anything new I would like to create.
If you require a step by step process to see where I may have gone wrong, I'd be more than happy to supply it...
Thanks...

On the server in the terminal set the root password by typing:
mysqldadmin -h localhost -u root password "rootpassword"
where rootpassword is the password you want to set.
Next connect to mysql as root:
mysql -p -u root
then create the new database
mysql> create database databasename;
where databasename is what you want to call it (don't forget the closing semicolon).
then
mysql> grant all on databasename.* to 'username'@'yourclientIPaddress' identified by 'yourpassword';.
This last command will give access to all operations on this new database to your username at the ip address of your client machine. Yourpassword = the password you want to use for your mysql connection, not the root password.

  • MySQL and Mac

I came across this article because I am trying to set up a database using MySQL. It explains how to set it up on your Mac but mentions "When installing MySQL, you need to be aware of the potential effect this will have on the security of your system, as a database server can open an avenue of attack." What kind on attacks are they talking about? I am a complete beginner to this and the method for optimal security installation doesn't make any sense.
    http://developer.apple.com/internet/opensource/osdb.html

There are several different levels of security that are possible with MySQL. Depending on your installation, you may not need to worry about all of them.
If you did a default installation, with no firewall running, anyone on your local subnet could connect to your MySQL. If you are behind a NAT router (such as a Wifi router), that will be very few people. If you were directly connected to the Internet (very unusual) that would be everyone. If you don't want anyone else to connect to your MySQL, it would be best to make sure the firewall is running and that the MySQL port isn't open. (By default, most firewalls are designed to allow access to server software like MySQL. Otherwise, the server software wouldn't work! Running MySQL for your own purposes is a special case where you do want a firewall and you don't want ports open).
On another level, you can configure MySQL to handle its own security. Usually, user accounts in MySQL are configure to only allow connections from "localhost". This is a very good idea. Then, only local users, such as your self can connect. There is still a slight chance of potential vulnerability from unknown and unpatched security bugs in MySQL itself. A firewall would protect you from that infinitesimally small risk.
Finally, many people like to use the phpMyAdmin web-based admin tool. That is what most web hosting providers use so it is good to know how to use it. And it is very handy. The problem is that the firewall will allow port 80 access by default and that would give people access to your admin tool. It would be best to set the firewall to "allow only essential services". If you do want to open the web server port, make sure you have a localhost-only MySQL user account and make sure the password is good and maybe even put an htaccess file in the phpMyAdmin folder to further restrict access in any number of ways.
I think I've covered it all! Let me know if I've missed anything.

  • How can I configure my new Mac Pro to output the timeline via HDMI

How can I configure my new Mac Pro to output the timeline in FCP 7 (yes, I have X, but I'm using 7 right now). I have two monitors running from TB2, but want to have the third for a client monitor.
If I use all three via TB2, it's literally three monitors, and I want to edit on my CineDisplay. I only want the client to see the timeline video on the third monitor. When I hook up HDMI I get no signal, in fact, I can't have the HDMI cable hooked up for TB2 to work with the third.

If you use all ThunderBolt displays, or stick with DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort (free conversion between the two with only a cheap cable) you can have up to six displays.
If you attach "legacy" displays with "any-old adapter", you can have up to two, and the built-in HDMI counts as one if you use it.
    Any more requires ACTIVE Adapters.
The US$100 Apple ACTIVE Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter works in every case, even displays over 1920 wide.
StarTech and Accell make US$35 ACTIVE adpters that work for displays up to 1920 wide.

  • I just bought an airport express and I am in the process of configuring but my mac does not detect any airport devise. internet is working wirelessly and the airport is plugged next to the mac. any clue how can I fix this?

I just bought an airport express but when trying to configure it my mac is not capable of detecting the devise. The airport is plugged right next to the modem and the wireless internet is running perfectly. does any one experience this before?

You don't mention what function you want the AirPort Express to accomplish.
If you are trying to configure it to "join" your existing wireless network, you need to know the exact type of security that your wireless network is using fo you can use that same information to provide the correct settings to the AirPort Express.
You may be getting a message that the settings have been stored successfully, but unfortunately the settings that you have provided to the Express are likely the wrong settings.
The only way that you really know if the settings that you entered were correct is if you get a green light 20-30 seconds after you click Update.  If you don't get a green light on the Express, the settings that you provided were not the correct settings.
When you click Update, the Express will "disappear". This is normal. Up until the time that you click update, AirPort Utility is communicating to the Express on a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxxx. As soon as you click Update, the Express switches (or tries to switch) to another network, so of course it will disappear from the AirPort Utility window.
As soon as you click Update, close AirPort Utility. There is no reason to keep watching a window when the Express will never appear.

    Hi,
I have setup mysql for use with a rails project using the version installed with server 10.5 and associated directory dependencies as given in the Web Technologies setup manual. I think there are other posts providing efforts to install a separate mysql from scratch.
Anyway - my procedure was setup MySQL Service in Server Admin
    Initial Conditions:
I wanted my databases to be stored on an external drive:
    1. Server -> Settings -> Services with MySQL checked. Save panel.
    2. Set permissions on /Volumes/<ext drive folder path>
owner = _mysql, group = admin
owner rwx, group rx, world rx (r=read, w=write, x=execute)
    MySQL Settings panel
    1. Check – Allow network connections (if connecting remotely)
    2. Set database location to - /Volumes/<ext drive folder path>
    3. Set MySQL Root Password – xxxxxxxx
    4. Save and start MySQL service
    5. In MySQL logs verify MySQL daemon started
and datadir = /Volumes/<ext drive folder path> with log entries for service up and running
    6. In Terminal create a database:
    mysqladmin –u root –p create <database name>
Note that database names are lowercase (case insensitive file names)
from here you can access the database with the tool of your choice. For a ruby on rails application I was able to upload data with fixtures and interact with the data through the script/console.

    Harry

  • Upgrade mysql in Mac Os Server Snow Leopard 10.6.8

    Hi
The built in mysql server on Mac Os Server Snow Leopard 10.6.8 that I have bought is 5.0, I need to upgrade it to 5.5, how do I do that?
    I followed these instructions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4006
Everything went smoothly except that the server is not upgraded still the same version.
    Thanks

Chris is right. The only way, you can upgrade to 5.5 is by doing it manually. Apple will probably update to a later version with Lion. But MySQL version updates have been rare in the past.
Installing a different version is pretty straightforward, but you can not use SA anymore and have to configure the php, apache in the correct way. There are plenty of links out there which can help you.
    So long.

  • Configure Jabber for Mac with local CUCM and WebEx Connect

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has been able to configure the Jabber for Mac 8.6.2 client to use the WebEx Connect presence server with a local CUCM and Unity Connection servers. The preferences accounts tab does not show or allow the addition of the voice services. I have added from a working local CUCM preferences plist file what I believe are the correct entries however I still cannot see the accounts on the preferences tab. We currently do not have a local cisco presence server hence the requirement to trial the WebEx Connect server as I can't get past the first configuration step without it.
    regards
        paul

Hi - I have done this via the admin portal but still cannot get the Jabber client for Mac to register for voice.  The Windows version works fine for the same user and CUCM device.   Are there any other settings that need to be enabled specific to the Mac client?
    Thanks.

I guess you mean whether I would be able to add one of the iPads to the new AC Mac by putting it in Restore mode and supervising it from that Mac? That will probably work. My problem is, that I've done that with the whole batch (60+ as I said earlier) when moving to a dedicated account within my own PowerBook some time ago. That takes an awfull lot of time, because it involves doing manual tweaking per iPad and adding the purchased apps again (in the Netherlands we don't have VPP so that is a manual process).
I would really rather have the settings transfered and continue working on the Mac Mini than starting all over again.

  • How can i transfer my installation of Apple Configurator from one Mac to another?

I work at a secondary school in the UK. We currently have 20ish ipads, all configured and supervised through Apple configurator. As the mac we were using is rather old, we bought a new one, and I need to transfer all the apple configurator date from the old one to the new one.
I tried using the information from this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5194?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
I don't want to do a full restore from the old to the new as the old one has so much extra stuff on its HDD that isn't necessary any more. I only want to transfer the configurator data across so that I can plug our ipads into the new mac and they will work as before.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks.

The Apple Document covers this. See the footnotes of my google docs
I've done this, it is easy, but takes time and patience.
On the existing mac with OSX and Configurator:
    ========================================
    - run disk utility and verify your disks are ok, a must
    - make note of the user logged in when using configurator  such as "bob"
    - connect a new or newly reformatted USB formatted for Apple
    - run time machine and backup to the USB
    - Take the mac off the network,
    - Buy a new mac
    - setup the mac with a new logon account like Paul or  "bob2"   do not use BOB !!
    - finish the new purchase setup, get to your desktop
    - now run the migraiton assistant  moving bob from the USB to the new mac
    - reboot, logon as bob, launch configurator and connect just one ipad.  Test
