Conky vs. xcompmgr [SOLVED]
While using xcompmgr my conky becomes transparent and barely visible. Obviously i don't want this to happen. Solutions?

is there no way to sanely use conky w/ xcompmgr?
Try:
update_interval 1
own_window yes
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_type desktop
own_window_hints undecorate,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
double_buffer yes
I know own_window_hints aren't supposed to be necessary with 'own_window_type desktop' but I left it in and it works.
EDIT: Ooh, another thought... do you have the double buffer extension enabled in X? ('Load "dbe"' in the Module section of xorg.conf.)

It is aligning correctly to the right, but because of the size of the conky text area you have set, right happens to be in the middle of the screen, i.e., conky has no idea how wide your screen is, it is right aligning against the size of the text area.
The code where you change the size of the text area is here:
# Minimum size of text area
minimum_size 280 5
Try increasing the "280" number until the entire text area is as wide as you'd like. At that point, the right align variable will have moved your output away from the center towards the right edge of your screen. By the way, if you had "text" + spaces that was as wide as your screen, it would force the conky text area to that size (as long as it was not constrained by another variable, "maximum_width"). However, trying to adjust everything with text + spaces gets messy.
Also, just for grins, you could set the "own_window" variable to yes:
# Create own window instead of using desktop (required in nautilus)
own_window yes
for the time being. This will allow you to better visualize the text area size because you wll see this area as a window with title bar, etc. Set it back to "no" when done. I have mine set to "yes" all the time because I'm using Nautilus to manage my desktop, so in order to make the window appear "windowless", I have to do this:
# Create own window instead of using desktop (required in nautilus)
own_window yes
own_window_type override
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
Hope that helps. -
(conky) mixerbar problem [solved]
Hi there.
I want to put the $mixerbar variable in my conky. If I only put $mixerbar, it works, but I would that all my "bar" have the same size.
So I try ${mixerbar 5,100}, but when I start my conky, I've this error :
conky: mixer.c:841: snd_mixer_handle_events: Assertion `mixer' failed.
I rly haven't any idea to solve this... I'm looking on google since 1-2hour, but nothing..
Anyone ?

Conky, Openbox and Xcompmgr
Hi :)
After visiting this post to learn how to get conky and xcompmgr to get along, I'd like to know if there's anyway we can make openbox show its menu when we right-click on conky's window.
As it is, conky already displays fine, with no flicker and no shadow... it virtually is part of the desktops' background now. However, i still wanted to be able to right-click on it and have it act as if it indeed was part of the background... like, making conky "pass" the right-click to openbox
Does anybody know how to do this?
Thanks in advanceSorry to resurrect this, but I was just curious about the same issue. Here's what I ended up using:
own_window yes
own_window_type override
You can set own_window_transparent to whatever you want. I'm not having any problems with redrawing/windows disappearing/etc. own_window_hints are ignored.

[SOLVED] Problem With conky and or xcompmgr
So I tried to search for this issue but i don't know quite how to explain through words on what is going on. basically i got corky installed. and so when i login my screen all around corky doesn't refresh. and i believe this to be because of xcompmgr. because thats when I installed it that is when my problem started. so here is a screenshot
Last edited by Sicariuxs (2012-11-14 21:13:45)no i don't have the problem when xcompmgr is running (lol didn't mean corky!! kept thinking about league of legends xD) but the problem is that if i don't have xcompmgr running that i don't have true trnasparancy on guake or any of my other applications. what i believe it to be is that maybe conky doesn't do so well with compositing. because this also has happened to me with compiz. but i know it has to be possible to combine the two! i've seen it done all over youtube. but i keep getting this problem. any suggestions? and thanks for the quick response

[SOLVED] xcompmgr, feh and openbox don't play nice
Hey,
I started using Openbox with xcompmgr a few days ago. I start xcompmgr in .xinitrc, then a few apps later Openbox (see .xinitrc file). Problem is, xcompmgr paints my background gray. Calling feh later doesn't paint a new background image. I read in the wiki that the problem is with xcompmgr and the solution is to use hsetroot (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xco … Openbox.29). This doesn't solve the problem for me. All it does is paint my background before xcompmgr repaints it gray. If it matters, my login manager's SLIM and this is my .xinitrc:
#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
hsetroot -solid "#000066"
xcompmgr -cfF && feh --bg-scale /home/gal/Pictures/fiji.JPG &
tint2 &
tilda &
gnome-power-manager &
xscreensaver --no-splash &
sleep 5
feh --bg-scale /home/gal/Pictures/fiji.JPG &
conky -b &
exec ck-launch-session openbox-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
Any comments about how to sole this problems are welcome.
EDIT: The sleep 5 statement was to try to make feh work by giving it some brake. Sadly it did not help.
Last edited by Greenstuff (2010-01-01 14:25:12)I use similar settings to yours, but:
- they are in ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh
- no "hsetroot"
- nitrogen, instead of feh
Besides: why did you place xcompmgr and feh on the same line? Did you try with two different lines, one for each command?

[solved] "what's my linux doing?" conky-bar + script?
Hi!
I'm searching for and/or am trying to figure out a conky config + script that lets me "sort of see what my pc is doing atm", just a little peek, something that "helps guess" and "blends in". Couldn't find anything that lets me see some random details like that, so I did this for now:
stuff.bash:
#!/bin/bash
touch stuff.1 stuff.2
ps -A -o "cmd" > stuff.x
#pstree -U > stuff.x
if [ "$(diff -q stuff.x stuff.1)" = "" ]; then
cat stuff.diff
else
mv -b stuff.1 stuff.2
mv -b stuff.x stuff.1
diff --suppress-common-lines -d stuff.1 stuff.2 | grep \< | tr '\n' ' ' | sed "s/^[0-9a-f ]*//" > stuff.diff
cat stuff.diff
fi
which I'm using in that conky bar:
own_window yes
own_window_type dock
own_window_title conky
own_window_colour 555577
background yes
double_buffer true
use_xft yes

So... that gives me a sort of nice conky bar with some random "what's being done" - now p.e. It tells me that yaourt is calling wget and pacman... and cmake has been started... and for some reason firefox is calling itsself... and some strange python script in /tmp/... with my home directory written behind it as parameters... mmmh... well.... maybe I should check on that later, so back to the topic - what I'm sort of missing is more or less...:
(edit: [solved] / -I would rather have done something like this with lsof, but I didn't manage to get rid of some of the constantly changing columns of lsof output - those lead to way too many reoccurring info's and doesn't give me the feeling of "a little peek behind the curtains" like it's supposed to be )
- There must be an overall better ways to do something like that, right? Any ideas for a smart little script that gets a few lines of "chaotic random backgrund info" with a good: "ooooh, I seeee"-ratio and not too much spam?
(edit: [solved] - "network stuff"! I can't see enough network stuff!!! So if anyone knows an easy (easy as in "call-it-once-per-5-seconds-with-concy"-easy) to show what processes are meddling around on the network most atm, that would be great... maybe I'll try netstat again for just that... )
- Also the whole rest of that config & script are far from perfect...
So: Any hints & stuff? Thanks!
Last edited by whoops (2009-07-19 11:12:24)Ooooh, that explains it.
Thanks, but I'm looking for (see example) a single line or something for a conky bar and something a lot less "systematic"... hard to explain... something to "see stuff fly by"... the "strange small line where I can recognize stuff from time to time"... like at the moment it's telling me "kjournal2d < n/usr/libhistory < bla bla bla < www.archlinux.org < ninotify < npipe < npipe < /bin/bash ./stuff.bash < /dev/input event....." and its going on an on and on which does not make thaaat much sense for but I like seeing it...
That's my "best one" so far:
stuff.bash:
#!/bin/bash
touch stuff.1 stuff.2
ps -A -o "cmd" > stuff.x
lsof -F cn | grep -v -E "p[0-9][0-9]|proc|stuff|lsof|grep|conky| sed " | sed "s/^.//g" >> stuff.x
diff -BEbw --suppress-common-lines stuff.x stuff.1 | grep \< | tr '\n' ' ' | sed "s/^[0-9a-f ]*\|IPv4//g" | sed "s/ */ /g" > stuff.diffx
if [ "$(diff stuff.diffx stuff.diff | grep \<)" = "" ]; then
cat stuff.diff
else
mv -b stuff.1 stuff.2
mv -b stuff.x stuff.1
mv -b stuff.diffx stuff.diff
cat stuff.diff
fi
... just I think it might suck a little too much CPU... and I didn't manage to filter out all the stuff this script generates itself without loosing too many unrelated info... and some stuff that keeps showing up every few seconds. Somehow I'd like it mostly to show "stuff that doesn't happen all the time".

[SOLVED!] Conky won't run undecorated, please assist.
Greetings,
As suggested in my other thread, I have been working on customizing a conky script that simply shows the time, date, calendar, current weather, and forecast, and I have completed it.
However I have ran into a problem. Up until I basically had it completed, it would run fine undecorated without any window borders and the like. But now it won't, and it laughs at me instead. If I want to see my conky, I have to have it decorated in the window border, which is a pain and something I don't want. I want it to simply blend in with my desktop.
Anyways, I am hoping someone can help me solve this. I know it runs. If I set it to decorate, it pops up, info and all. If I set it to undecorate, it laughs at me, but shows up lxtask and htop.

Again, all I need help with is having it run undecorated without any window decoration. I am running Fluxbox as my WM. If you need any other info, please let me know. Thanks.

About the widget; I used Sid's conky script from the conky screenshot as my base, it was the first conky I had tried. Though I only ended up keeping the forecast portion after editing it massively...
I think it must have been the own_window_hints throwing me off. -
[Solved]Conky and word wrapping - Is there a way?
So I have a very limited area to work with, something like 176x360 (+/- a few pixels), and I want the ability to show an RSS feed. Well, the feed works of course, but due to the limited width, I'm in great need of word wrapping, and for that problem I have found no solution and going on for 2-3 hours straight, my head hurts
Anyway, here's my .conkyrc, not that it's needed of course.

I know this looks confusing and probably is full of critical error, but that simple because I'm a conky noob. I basically just downloaded a profile I liked and completely changed it over the course of a few hours.
Anyway, I'm rambling again, but if you've got any idea's, please do let me know.
Best regards.
Last edited by zacariaz (2012-08-27 17:19:35)Okay, so I've found sort of a solution to part of the problem, so what I have so far look like this:
wget -quiet -O - archlinux.org/feeds/news/ | fmt -w 25 -g 25
It works as long as there are no words longer than 25 character, which I should think is rare, even including package names and such.
However there's still the issue parsing the xml so I get only what I want:
<item><title>$content</title><link>
This may be solved using some sort of terminal rss parser, but I would rather prefer not to.
Then there's the issue with reloading.
My current conky is set to reload every second, but of course one can't just pull the feed every second and I'm not convinced that conky has any built in solution for that problem. Of course I can always start a cronjob and save it all to a file, but portability would be nice.
anyway, I'll return later. -
Conky doesn't show (XFCE 4.8) and keeps asking password? [SOLVED]
I've finally got XFCE4.8 all dressed up the way I want it to look.
Only problem left is Conky:
1.It simply doesn't show on the desktop.
2.It keeps asking for a password?
If i start conky via terminal i get this:

[SOLVED]Compton, Conky and RXVT-Unicode not playing nicely
Hello. I'm having some problems making my desktop how I want it. My window manager is fluxbox.
First problem is just a minor inconvenience, but annoying. When I login, a transparent terminal spawns to my specification, but it is skewed.
http://i.imgur.com/hrEEh3H.jpg
However, as soon as I open any window it fixes itself
http://i.imgur.com/WXQZ9e3.jpg
Second problem is that I can't figure out how to remove the shadow under conky. I know that it is coming from the slit, but it just won't go away. I can get it to go away if I set conky to desktop instead of panel, but then when I launch any window it overlaps with the conky bar, and that is unaceptable. Maybe there is a fluxbox configuration option that reserves some space so nothing can overlap it? But I couldn't find anything.
Here are the config files I think are relevant:

Last edited by Chetyre (2014-04-10 16:51:23)using lowercase conky in compton doesn't change anything. I'm pretty sure that shadow is not from conky, but from the slit. When I set the slit to autohide in the init file, the shadow hides as well. And there is no shadow in any other conky window type I've tried, except type panel. Unfortunately, it is the only one so far with the behavior I want.
I would like to use true transparency in urxvrt, since that does solve the skew issue and I think it looks better. However, in doing so the terminal is quite useless since there is a lot of text that I can't see, because the font becomes the same color as certain backgrounds. Unless there is a way to separate it? I want it to look like the one on the left (left = fake transparency, right = true transparency).

[SOLVED] xcompmgr and nvidia geforce 6800 LE
Hello everybody,
I am installing arch on my main desktop on which I have a nvidia 6800 LE. I used wiki and almost everything works fine. However I am used to have xcompmgr running with awesome wm. But my xorg configuration for my geforce 6800 LE should be not correct because it's not working at all.
I observed that both modules freetype and type1 that are highlighted in wiki are not found on my computer ...
You can find my xorg here :

[SOLVED]Conky Forecast problems
I upgraded OpenOffice yesterday and for some reason everytime I run Conky, this error message shows up
/usr/bin/conkyForecast: line 3: :/usr/lib/openoffice/basis-link/program/:/usr/lib/guake: No such file or directory
If anyone knows how to solve that problem, any help would be appreciated.

[solved] WMFS statusbar and conky - conky appears on desktop as well.
Hello guys. I recently got into WMFS. I was able to use conky in the status bar. However, some text shows up on the desktop. I could not find any fix for this issue by searching. Here is a screenshot- http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/69 … x768s.png/
and this is my conkyrc- http://pastebin.com/gAJgnu9k
Would using double buffer or user_space none help?
EDIT: I just tried out_to_x no and it appears to fix the issue for me.
