Connect Enterprise - MS SQL Requirements
Hello,
I've looked through all the documentation I could find and
also searched both the knowledgebase and the forum to find answers.
What I'm looking for is granular "rule of thumb type data" for
instance like in the format of:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_19524&sliceId=2
Anyway:
1. Does anyone have general MS SQL database file size metrics
in regard to Adobe Connect Enterprise? I know it's a tough question
with many answers based on how large of an install, how many users,
etc. However does anyone have metrics based on what they've
experienced?
2. I have seen the Adobe server requirements for a Connect
install, however, what would be the server requirements for a
second server used as a SQL server to support the Connect install?
Regarding MS SQL server to support a Connect install, should I use
the requirements for Adobe Connect as a rule of thumb or the MS SQL
Server 2005 requirements instead?
Thanks!
1) The database file is tiny; the content is the larger
storage hog and is stored in a file system. I believe the database
on one of our installs is about 1 MB with over 1,000 users.
2) We currently have it set up with SQL 2000, but have
started discussing the migration to SQL 2005 on the database
server. I would go with 2005 to start with just because it's one
less migration, but I couldn't say based on experience.

Connection problem to SQL Server 2000
I have a local installation of MSSQL 2000, that doesn't seem to use any port as a listener. when checking the log I can see that even though I said it should use a TCP/IP connection, it says it uses a shared memory (I guess the reason is that the installation I did is not for a server but only for running on my machine).
How can I define through BPEL the connection to this kind of MSSQL? can I define a connection that will run on the named pipes of the SQL server?
Thanks in advance.Hi Ophir,
I tried this exercise of connecting to SQL Server myself via jdbc and I wrote a new section for the developer's guide based on it. It was not completely painless. For your specific question the SQL Server Express install sets up connectivity by either 'shared memory' or 'named pipes' by default, but you can easily add a TCP/IP listener (for me via the SQL Server Configuration Manager), which is mandatory for jdbc access. Please see the section 'TCP Port' below.
Not sure if you have it, I am cutting and pasting from the 10.1.2.0.2 DBAdapter guide:
(Oracle® Application Server Adapters for Files, FTP, Databases, and Enterprise Messaging User's Guide
10g Release 2 (10.1.2))
Using a Microsoft SQL Server Database
When using a Microsoft SQL Server database, follow the database connection steps in Chapter4, "Design Time" and use the following information:
MS JDBC Driver
URL: jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://localhost\NAME:1433;SelectMethod=cursor;databasename=???
Driver Class: com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver
Driver Jar: .\SQLServer2000\msbase.jar, msutil.jar, mssqlserver.jar
DataDirect Driver
URL: jdbc:oracle:sqlserver://localhost
Driver Class: com.oracle.ias.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver
Driver Jar: .\DataDirect\YMbase.jar, YMoc4j.jar, YMutil.jar, YMsqlserver.jar
Note the following when connecting to a SQL Server database:
User name and password
o
SQL Server 2005 installs with Windows authentication as the default. Therefore, you do not log in with a user name and password; rather, your Windows user account either has privilege or does not. JDBC requires you to provide a user name and password.
According to support.microsoft.com, "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 driver for JDBC does not support connecting by using Windows NT authentication." See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313100
However, the DataDirect driver specification states that it does.
If you use your Windows user name and password, you may see something like the following:
[Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC][SQLServer]Login failed for user
'DOMAIN\USER'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server
connection.[Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]
An error occured while attempting to log onto the database.
You must select mixed mode authentication on a clean installation.
o
On a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Express Edition installation, the system username is su and the password is whatever you provide.
Connect string
From the sqlcmd login, you can infer your connect string, as in the following examples:
Example 1:
sqlcmd
1>
jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://localhost:1433
Example 2:
sqlcmd -S user.mycompany.com\SQLExpress
1>
jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://user.mycompany.com\SQLExpress:1433
Example 3:
sqlcmd -S user.mycompany.com\SQLExpress -d master
1>
jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://user.mycompany.com\SQLExpress:1433;databasename=
master
A full URL is as follows:
jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://serverName[\instanceName]:tcpPort[;SelectMethod=cursor][;databasename=databaseName]
Database name
If you must explicitly supply the database name, but do not know it, go to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data
If you see a file named master.mdf, then one of the database names is master.
TCP port
Make sure that SQL Server Browser is running and that your SQL Server service has TCP/IP enabled and is listening on static port 1433. Disable dynamic ports. In SQL Native Client Configuration/Client Protocols, make sure that TCP/IP is enabled and that the default port is 1433.
JDBC drivers
You must download the JDBC drivers separately. From www.microsoft.com, click Downloads and search on jdbc. You can also try using the DataDirect driver.
Thanks

Error message when trying to connect to a SQL Server Database
All:
I get the following message when I try to connect to a SQL Server Database within a form:
"Connection for Source DataConnection failed because the environment is not trusted"
Can anyone help me solve this problem?
Thanks,
BRHi Brian,
In Acrobat, security concerns dictate that you cannot specify an ODBC connection string by using the Driver=; syntax. Therefore, the client computer using the form needs to have a DSN pre-configured for ODBC connections.

How to connect to a Sql server from Oracle using db link
Hi All,
Does anybody have any idea about how to connect to a sql server from oracle database using db link to syncronize the data? I need to pull the data from Sql server table to Oracle tables and relay messages back to the sql server.
Thank you,
Praveen.we have 2 products - DG4MSQL and DG4ODBC.
DG4ODBC is for free and requires a 3rd party ODBC driver and it can connect to any 3rd party database as long as you use a suitable ODBC driver
DG4MSQL is more powerfull as it is designed for MS SQL Server databases and it supports many functions it can directly map to SQL Server equivalents - it can also call remote procedures or participtae in distributed transactions. Please be aware DG4MSQL requires a license - it is not for free.
Check out Metalink and you'll find notes how to configure both products.

Connect to MS SQL server from OWB on Linux platform
Hi,
I want to connect to MS SQL server through OWB, on Linux platform.
I suppose I would use JDBC driver, and Heterogeneous services. Is that possible?
I did not see anything on JDBC driver for MS SQL server for Linux platform from Oracle.
Also, I was wondering is Oracle Gateway 10g for Linux a way to connect to MSSQL server?
Any leads would be appreciated.
Thanks
AniHi,
This quite an actual topic for myself, so I decided to take some time to collect some information.
Start at:
* Oracle Generic Connectivity and Oracle Transparent Gateway - http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/gateways/gateways_fov.html
You can use the free Heterogenous Services component named Generic Connectivity for connecting to SqlServer over ODBC. You will need to find (or purchase?) a third-party ODBC driver for SqlServer for Linux, e.g. from www.datadirect.com. Setting this up will allow you to define a databaselink to the SqlServer. Open Gateways implements a limited set of the oracle SQL, so you will have to find out what is possible and what not.
See also:
* How To Setup HSODBC on Linux - https://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/showdoc?db=NOT&id=264567.1
* Generic Connectivity Available on Linux x86 with 10g - https://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/showdoc?db=NOT&id=261726.1
You can also use the Transparent Gateway for SqlServer (HS), which is about EURO 12000 per computer(!). This gives you a full implementation of Oracle SQL and you can access the SqlServer like it was Oracle.
You can also install Microsofts JDBC drivers into Oracle's JVM, and connect through JDBC to SqlServer. This is however not supported by Oracle, but it will work. See:

Edited by: user10876711 on May 12, 2011 9:18 AMwhen you want to connect from Oracle to a SQl Server you need the Oracle Gateway (HSODBC or even better Dg4ODBC) and a FOREIGN ODBC DRIVER for your foreign database - a SQL Server ODBC driver. You have to get this driver from a 3rd party vendor - Oracle does not offer any foreign ODBC drivers.
So before being able to use DG4ODBC/HSODBC you need to install from a 3rd paryt vendor a SQL Server ODBC driver. Commercial vendrs are for example Data Direct, Openlink or Easysoft.
On Unix ODBC drivers commonly also require a driver manager. If the ODBC driver vendor does not ship one with the ODBC driver you can get it from www.unixodbc.org -

I am fairly new to vb.net and have read a few books and followed a few tutorials on youtube, what I would like to know is, are there any disadvantages
to the way I have connected to a SQL database using the SQLControl.vb. A lot of the vb books include data adapter and dataset within the form, I'm not sure if I'm following best practice by have the connection details outside of the form.
My other question is, I have created two connections in the SQLControl and call these connections within the same form using the same data adapter
and dataset. It all works fine but I just wanted to know of any potential issues?

1) You are not using Sepration of concerns for a solution that is doing data access, like using a DAL.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_concerns
2) You are directly issuing SQL commands at the UI, leading to sql injection attacks.
3) You are not using a UI design pattern, which leads you to tightly couple database activity to the UI.
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/228214/Understanding-Basics-of-UI-Design-Pattern-MVC-MVP
@System243trd, parameters are important to prevent SQL injection attacks (people will insert SQL commands into the database if you do not perform basic checking of what you are passing to the database). If you write a stored procedure try to make
the variables the correct SQL server data type to avoid problems later of people trying to call it directly. Darnold924 is right, I see no code to prevent against SQL injection attacks. In addition, during development in some instances LocalSQLDB
database system is used and during deployment you usually need to use the production SQL server database. Moreover, Linq-to-SQL is used on Windows Phone 8.1 and it is required for phone development later and so I highly recommend learning
it if you plan on developing windows phone applications.
@System243trd, If you want the code for the windows phone app I think it uses the MVVM model or that might be for universal apps or regular windows phone apps. I have been using the windows phone Silverlight pivot or panorama template (it might
be pieces of both). I've already submitted to the windows phone marketplace and it had to go through certification first. I plan on later making an article on it but I need to first fix one or two simple problems I have with it. Here's a link to
the source code if you later want to look at the source code (in vb.net):

Sybase connection tab not showing in New connection option in SQL developer
Hi,
I do not see a Sybase connection tab in New connection option in SQL developer 2.1 where as it was available in ver 1.5
Why is that? how to fix it?Hi,
Have you installed the JTDS JDBC driver yet into SQL Developer.
This is required before you get the connection tab for SQL Server and Sybase.
You can install the JTDS driver from the Check For Updates action.

Cant export worksheet when connected to MS SQL Server 2000
SQL Developer version: 1.5.1
Hello,
I have a connection to an SQL Server 2000 database. I can select data with an "order by" clause but I receive an error when I attempt to do an "Export --> xls" on the worksheet data. I dont think this was a problem prior to SQL Developer 1.5.
No export error occurs if the "order by" cluase is removed.
Here is an example of a select stmt that generates the error.
select LastName, FirstName, EmployeeID
from northwind.dbo.employees
order by LastName, FirstName
Here are the error details:
First dialog box error text: The ORDER BY clause is invalid in views, inline functions, derived tables, and subqueries, unless TOP is also specified.
Second dialog box error text (after clicking Details button):

The table selected from is not a view, inline function, derived table, or subquery (as the error suggests). I can work around the problem by adding "TOP nnnn" to the select statement but this shouldn't be required.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.I confirmed that this is not a problem in SQL Developer 1.2.1.32.13. It started with 1.5. In 1.5.1.5540 I can successfully run the query and see the output in the Results tab. Only the Export has the error.

I am trying connect to a SQL instance for our CRM program and I am receiving To Connect to this Server you must use SQL Management Studio or SQL Server Management
This is a Brand new Server 2012 that is running our CRM product and it is trying to connect to a Server 2008 R2 server with SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 instance (10.50.4000)
I have seen this in the past where it needed the 2005 backwards compatibility components installed but those are not supported on 2012 server and this is not a 2005 SQL instance.
I am trying to install the Shared Management Objects for SQL Server 2008 but it tells me I need to install the CLR types, which I did install. But it continues to tell me to install the CLR types.
Has anyone ran into any issues like this? (this happens trying to connect to multiple SQL Servers from this new 2012 Server)
Thanks!
-MaxHello,
Which version and edition of the SQL Server instance did you installed on the new server machine? If you install SQL Server 2012 Express edition, you can try to install SQL Server Management Studio 2012 from
this link.
You can connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 or earily verions with SSMS 2012.
What's more, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Objects Collection requires Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0, Microsoft SQL Server Native Client, and Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types. You can try to download and install
SQL Serve 2008 Feature Pack
which contains packages above.

Can OBIEE 10G connect to a SQL Server database (2005)?
We have Oracle BI running already. We have also a SQL Server database running. Now there is requirement that asks to connect to the SQL Server and directly send some SQL quires to the SQL Server and get result back and display it in answers. I know the normal process should be set ETL to load the data from the SQL Server to OBIEE and from there the report can be built. So I am not sure is this doable?
Hi Srini,
These is the steps I have done:
1. open Oracle BI administration tool
2. create a new repository
3. select import from database, and specify the ODBC (connection to the SQL Server). It asked me to choose tables to import. I then selected one table. Now I can see the connection pool and the table being created in physical. I saved it.
4. I then goes to BI interactive dashboard -> answers-> Direct Database Request. In the connection pool I entered the name of the connection pool in step 3. And entered some simple query and I got:
error : Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).
error : State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 27022] Unresolved Connection Pool object: "asepostest_pool". (HY000)
error : SQL Issued: {call NQSGetQueryColumnInfo('EXECUTE PHYSICAL CONNECTION POOL asepostest_pool select * from branch')}
Should I modify NQSConfig.INI in C:\OracleBI\server\Config\ to make it point to my new repository? Like this?

But then I couldn't restart BI server. -

Thanks for posting here.
Connecting to Microsoft Azure SQL Database by using OLE DB or ADO is not supported on SQL Azure.
Ref: http://www.connectionstrings.com/sql-azure/
Microsoft does not announce support for OLE DB connections to Azure and there are limitations. Some required OLE DB schema rowsets are not available from an Azure connection, and some properties that identify features in SQL Server are not adjusted to represent
SQL Azure limitations. For most common connect/query/update tasks it seems to work fine.

Tracking Individual Users Scores using Captivate 4 and Connect Enterprise
Hi,
I work in an IT shop and currently I am having trouble supporting our Marketing division's Captivate needs. They wish to be able to create quizes for online viewing in an LMS and be able to track individual users scores for accountability. Right now I we are using Captivate 4 with Adobe Connect Enterprise. I have been able to use the LMS and view quizes online, but all reporting is done as aggregate and not a session by session (individual) basis. Thus, I only have access to average, max, min scores and other info about all test takers, but no information about specific test users. I have considered accomplishing this by sending data to an access database, but this would require the IT deparment to regularly assist them with creating tests. Obviously I am looking to have the Marketing department be as self-sufficient as they can be. I think the easiest way would be to have the quiz report a session ID (unique for each instance of the quiz being accessed) to Adobe Connect and having Connect associate each aswer to a specific session ID. Other than that I do not have any other ideas for proper tracking of each user's score.
Does anyone know what the easiest (least amount of involvement from the IT staff each time Marketing needs to make a test in captivate) way to accomplish this?
Thanks! So, i sorta found a way to do this -- by adding a TOC and making the lessons self-paced, the user will always be brought back to the place where they left off when they exited the lesson.
But it seems that even though the icon in the curriculum list changes to CONTINUE when the user closes the lesson, it still unlocks the next lesson even though the staus checkmarks in the previous lesson are not complete.
Help. Are there any other such postings?
