Connect to database over network

I have a shared drive set up to multiple computers. How do I go about to connect to a database that is on only on of these computers? Can I put something on the shared drive to access? I am just completely lost here.
Thanks.

You would install the Oracle ODBC driver. You can get the driver installed from the client CD. After you install it, you just have to configure it by entering the connection name.
In a typical setup, you have the Oracle client installed on your client machine. You also have your tnsnames.ora file set up accordingly. This file resolves the connection entries to your different databases. e.g you may have a connection called test.world. You test connectivity by doing a "tnsping test.world" and it should be successful.
You can also have an ODBC connection setup to point to that TNS entry test.world.
May be you should read up on client connectivity in the Oracle documentation.

    In lesson we want to create a project. Which application connect to ORACLE DATABASE (on another PC) over internet. But We don't know what we need?!
    We can connect Oracle Database from java easily, but not over internet. Help us.
    Thanks fro attention

    There probably is a firewall blocking you or you are behind a NAT and the db port is not being forwarded. Anyway, you shouldn't be letting something from the internet access your database directly anyway because that just invites hackers to abuse your system. Just be glad it doesn't work and think of a better design like encapsulating the data in a web service.

    Hi Guys,
    Hope some of you are still following this thread.
    Spoke to the network guys and they are at a loss. They say that port 1521 is allowed through the vpn and firewall.
    When I try to connect over the new JUNOS PULSE SVPN, I see in the listener log file that it established connection, but I think it can't see the client after it is allocated the temp listener port?
    Any suggestions please?

  • Retrieve list of values w/o connecting to database

    How can I meet this requirements: Users don't have connection to database(no network connection). But, he needs to have the have the values retrived from the list of values in a dialog which are actually database values. I can imagine gaving a text file and retrive from there, but, I have no idea what to do if the list is huge. Text files wouldn't suffice. Any ideas on this.
    TIA.

    It's not so much lines as characters.
    I have used some fairly long XML files and still had descent performance. (It's been awhile, I can't remember the number of lines) The problem comes in when you have lots of levels
    ie
    <productList>
    <product>
    <sub1>
    <suba></suba>
    </sub1>
    </product>
    </productList>
    or there is a lot of text within the tags. I really haven't done any benchmarking, so I'm not sure what that many lines would do.
    Another possibility might be to use something like an MS Access db. That way the file could be local. You lose some code portability, if that's an issue. You also have to pay for MS Office licenses, if you don't have them. You'll get better speed performance from this option. However, I'm not sure that Access will handle that many rows.
    How's that for a bunch of options, but no clear cut answers?
    -Mike

    First, this is a forum of volunteers.  There is no "urgent" here.
    "Urgent" means one of two things -
    1) people are dying, or
    2) you have a customer-facing, revenue-producing production system that is down.
    (And to get some perspective on the second case, keep the first in mind.)
    For the first, you call whatever civil emergency service seems appropriate.
    For the second, you open an SR with Oracle - which requires a paid-up support contract. For *them* to consider your problem "urgent", you will need to demonstrate that your problem falls under item #2. I seriously doubt your problem fits that criteria.
    You don't have a support contract?  Now you know the exact dollar figure that your company places on the data.
    That said, you need to understand a few things about your specific problem,
    First, port 1521 is only used by the listener to accept a connection request.  Once it gets that request (and finds that it is for a service (sid) that it knows about, it will fork a server process and tell the requesting client that it can communicate with that server process over some other port .. a randomly chosen port number in the "high" range.  It could be your vpn is blocking that other port, whereas your internal firewall is not.
    But this is just an educated guess since I cannot find "can not connect remote oracle database over VPN" in any error message manual. If you had mentioned the VPN along with an actual oracle error message we could be much more precise in our diagnoses and recommendations.
    ---- edit 22 Sep
    It occurred to me that I just assumed you were using the same client machine in both cases ... a laptop that you use both at work (local network) and home (vpn).  If that assumption is false, there are probably problems with your tns setup on the home (vpn) machine.
    But again, it would be much easier to help if you gave us an actual error message.

  • TNSNames - Connect database over HTTP protocol - Webservices

    Hi,
    I just want to know whether I can connect oracle over HTTP protocol instead of TCP/IP protocol in TNSNames.ORA. I'm trying to connect Oracle database which is out of network (over internet). Is this possible? If yes, how secure it is? Can I use HTTPS for secure connection?
    Here is some background, previously we had two different databases within our network and we used database link to connect to the other database. Now, the database is going out of our network (seperated as different company). And we still need to use that database and we don't want to connect to database via NAT IP address.
    We are looking for some solution probably HTTP protocol connection in TNSNames.ORA (if possible) or webservices. Regarding webservices in Oracle, I can see some documents that uses UTL_DBWS and Oracle XML DB to handle this. I'm not sure how to expose webservice from Oracle 10g database. Also, how secure is the Oracle webservice?
    Appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks
    Kumar

    Once more, missleading advices. It is not me who pursues the 'Hollier than thou' attitude, it is you who put yourself in the target.
    You cannot connect directly to Oracle using the HTTP
    protocol or HTTPS protocol.Yes you can, OraDAV has been available since Oracle 8i, as I have previously mentioned this was the first use of the Listener as an application server and supports protocols such as http and ftp. This feature is not widespreaded used because either people don't know about it or becuase it is easier to manage a regular Application Server. This was used about 6 or 7 years ago for the iFS feature. Today the OraDAV protocol is used for the Oracle Portal application to easy the life of non-technical people who contribute with contents to the portal. One more platform where OraDAV is used is in the Oracle XE, it supports the XE web administrator console and is the point of access of APEX.
    If you could this would have been documented.
    Did you read the documentation?Have you? It would not be the first time you recommend something you don't do.

  • Connecting to mpd over the Internet (outside home network) - error

    I'm trying to connect to an mpd instance running on my home computer from my computer at work.  I have an OpenVPN server at home, and so I can securely connect to my home network from work.  I've set up a second instance of mpd and icecast at home, and I'm trying to connect to this at work.  I can connect to the extent of being able to pull my library, playlist info over, but I can't actually seem to play anything.
    When I look at the mpd error messages, I find:
    shout_output: Failed to open "exelion HD mpd stream" [shout]: problem opening connection to shout server localhost:8000: Login failed
    output: Failed to open audio output
    I'm trying to connect using Cantata (which I use at home and like).
    Things I've played with:
    originally in my mpd config I had:
    user "source"
    I tried commenting that out and just letting mpd use whatever the default user is, but that didn't seem to help.
    The other thing I wonder about but haven't tried is different settings for "admin-user" in the icecast config.
    I currently have
    <admin-user>my-home-usernamer</admin-user>
    .  Should I change this to "admin"?  Does it matter?
    The passwords match between the mpd and icecast configs.

    Foucault wrote:Just in case you are not aware of it, MPD has built-in HTTP streaming to mp3/ogg/whatever. Unless you need any of the more advanced Icecast features, just use the httpd audio_output and get done with it.
    Thanks. I didn't know that. But that seems much easier.  I tried this, but I'm still having trouble.  From the mpd server I get the following report:

  • How can i make a connection between an application and a database over net

    dear sir
    how can i make connection between an appliction and a database over internet while the client side appliction is behind proxy and firewall
    for example how the live update of norton antivirus makes connection to the data server to make comparetions and get new virus definitions
    does that depend on sockets technology ?
    what references can guide me to the solution please?

    The ability to do so depends entirely on the JDBC driver implementation having some proxy method. It needs to recognize the HTTP or SOCKS proxy and use them to connect, and the firewall and proxy need to allow those specific port connections.
    To the best of my knowledge, all of these update utilities, e.g. live update for Netscape, Norton, etc., do not connect directly to the database. As it is, no sane security person would allow a database to be exposed to the Net. Rather, they connect using HTTP or HTTPS, which normally traverses firewalls just fine, to connect to a Web or application server on the far end. That application server then parses the request and retrieves whatever it needs to from the database.
    In other words, you cannot have a 2-tier client/server application. You need a 3-tier application:
    your client -> Web/app server -> database
    where the connection from your client to the Web/app server is over http or https through the firewall and proxies.
    Hope this helps.

  • Backup over Network Connection

    A little background: My main home computer is an older Dell with a CD-RW drive (no DVD-RW capabilities) and has the main iTunes Music folder on it. My wife has a Toshiba laptop with a DVD-RAM drive. Both computers are connected through a secure wireless home network and I have set up the main iTunes Music folder to be shared between the two computers, but mainly for copying purposes. Since my wife doesn't like all of my music, I created a separate iTunes Music folder on her laptop hard drive (also so she can have access to music while at work and not connected to the home network). Both machines are running XP SP2 and iTunes 7.1.
    I would like to back up the main library (Dell) to a DVD-RW because of the larger storage space but can't b/c of only having a CD-RW drive on the Dell. Is there a way to back up the iTunes Library on the Dell via the laptop's DVD-RAM drive over the wireless network? Any info and tips would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Andrew
    Dell Windows XP

    Hi there,
    Essentially, as far as I know, what you are asking is improbable.
    Buring a DVD is a very data flow sensitive process, such that any loss of data flow (say a short drop out of the wireless) would render the DVD being burnt physically useless.
    Again, as far as I know, there is no software that supports this specifically, and although it might be possible to hack up a solution, it would be difficult if not impossible to get working reliablly.
    Your best bet is to temporarily copy afore mentioned music to the Laptops hard drive, and then burn from there.

  • Problem with  connection to database when PC is connected to network

    Hi,
    I can't connect to my database locally when my PC (with database) is connected to network. When I try run enterpsise manager I see that Database Instance is down, Agent Connection to Instance is down with error ORA-12505 and Listener is up. When I try connect by sqlplus I see errors :ORA-01034 :Oracle not avilable and ORA-27101:shared memory realm does not exists. When I was installing database my PC was not connected to network.
    When I disconnect my PC from network, after few minutes I can run enterprise manager, can connect to Oracle and everything is OK.Moreover after that I can connect PC to network and still everything is OK.
    What is the reason of this problem and what can I do that I could always connect to Oracle, whenever my PC is connected or disconeccted to network?
    Thanks

    Hi,

    And as was already replied.
    My guess is that you installed on a network with dynamic IP and now you have a different IP address or none. If this is the case it is a clear indication that you didn't waste any time reading the installation documentation before you installed. This might be a great time to do so.Now, go back and read the installation guide. Pay particular attention to the section titled "Database Network Topics", especially the part about loopback adapters.
    Servers process don't work very well with DHCP assigned addresses, causing the clients to have to guess where the server is.
