Connect to Server Protocol??

To whom it may concern...
Can anyone tell me exactly the right formulation of characters that allows for a Command K access to other computers on my local network. At present I access my other computers through the Network Icon on my sidebar. I used to be able to access using the Command K command... but after a system re-install I have forgotten the proper formula of characters. I know it's starts with aft://comptername, but I don't know the other unique characters that are required. Any comments would be much appreciated.

You need to type in afp:// followed by the server's name or IP address for AFP servers, and use smb:// if it is an SMB server. More information is available in this article.

  • How do I connect to server (my other computer)?

I did this years ago but I don't remember the address I used.  CMD/K opens the dialog box.  My computer I want to connect is behind a modem and a router.  What do I type in the for address?  There is more than one computer on my home network.  All hard drives have unique names.  I have a DNS Alias IP address.
I want to do this with my computer when I am away from home.  Like I said, I did it years ago but I don't remember the address I need to use.  I've searched and everything I find doesn't sem to be what I'm looking for.  The away computer is running 10.6 and the home computer is running 10.5.

Camelot is correct.  You are asking for site-specific info.
I'm going to assume you're connecting remotely into your own network, and make some guesses, and hopefully help you recall how your network was set up.
What you enter depends on what access you've opened up into your network.
You can certainly try all the protocols you've listed.  ftp, http, and the rest.  (Well, not ftp.  Avoid ftp.  ftp is a pile of gnarly problems, and one of the best ways to make sure that anybody monitoring your network connections from the coffee shop will know your login credentials.   On a good day — one where your password and user aren't compromised — you'll still have to battle with getting the emphemeral port range working and open on either the client end or the server end, and through all of the intervening firewalls.   As should be obvious, I'm not a particular fan of ftp.  Given a choice, I'd use sftp, or maybe ftp via a VPN.)
If your NAT device is correctly configured and at (more or less) its default settings, then absolutely everything you try for your remote access will be blocked.
Everything should be blocked, too, as you really don't want more than absolutely necessary open, as there are more than a few folks that would look to access your server.   The folks attempting remote access will generally find and try any open port, too.  Even an open port associated with a relatively secure protocol can still have vulnerabilities, whether it's a protocol weakness that somebody discovers, or a weak password.
Now if you want to enable remote access of file services or such, then your NAT box will need to have TCP port 548 (AFP) configured and opened through, or whatever ports for whatever other service you want.
Beyond being insecure, ftp is a pain in the rump to open, as you either need a device that sniffs the traffic and opens the ports necessary, or that triggers on a connection, or you'll need to have the whole of the ephemeral port range open.
More appropriate for various remote-access contexts would be a VPN, either established via what's known as NAT pass-through (mapping the VPN ports through your NAT box to your OS X Server, and configuring the VPN server on your OS X Server box), or via VPN established directly into whatever gateway box you're using, if your gateway is mid-grade or more expensive box and has an integrated VPN server.   Not all of the NAT boxes have VPN support.
If you're in the Finder Connect To Server prompting:
If AFP (TCP port 548) is already open, then afp://youraddress
If CIFS/SMB (TCP port 445) is open, then smb://youraddress
But only somebody that's scanned your network or set up your network will know your configuration and which ports to use, both because of the NAT settings as well as any firewall you might be running on the server — OS X Server 10.6 could and variously did have the firewall service configured and running.
If you want to see what ports are already open, there are various remote services that offer that test.  For instance, log into the server and use your web browser there to connect to GRC and run their Shields Up test; you'll need to run that port scan from within your network.   That'll tell you which ports are open through into your system.

  • Connecting managed server to cluster's administration server

    Hello,
I have a problem when trying to connect managed server to cluster's
    administration server.
When starting the managed server I get a security exception:

java.lang.SecurityException: Administrators must log in over admin port with
    admin protocol.]]
    weblogic.management.configuration.ConfigurationException: admin URL:

I get the same result when testing the connection setup with
java weblogic.Admin -url 192.168.14.15:7001 -username system -password xyz
    CONNECT 1
    Background for this problem:
I'm trying to evaluate WLS6.0 clustering for my RMI services. I have two
machines setup with my test domain (DEdomain) and one cluster (DECluster)
    within it.
In administration server (machine A) I defined two servers to be run in
    machine A and machine B:
DEserver2 in machine B (to be started as managed server) and DEserver3
    in machine A
I'm going to bind a same service into these above servers of my DECluster.
    In machine B's startManagedWeblogic.sh I have:
    java -ms64m -mx64m -classpath
    $CLASSPATH -Dweblogic.Domain=DEdomain -Dweblogic.Name=$SERVER_NAME -Dweblogi
    c.management.server=$ADMIN_URL -Djava.security.policy==$WL_HOME/lib/weblogic
    .policy -Dweblogic.management.username=system -Dweblogic.management.password
    =$WLS_PW weblogic.Server
In machine A I have administration server DEserver1 listening port 7001.
And for the domain and cluster building I followed all relevant e-docs
manual pages. It's still somewhat blurry what kind of preparations I have to
make in managed server side to join the domain; for example do I have to
have identical domain directory structure within machine B and do I have to
configure something with admin console or is everything handled by
connecting to the administation server and reading the domain's config.xml
    from machine A.
I'm sure I have missed some fundamental idea for building clustered services
and would greatly appreciate if someone had any good tips or ideas.

    Harri

It appears you had set the administration port & listen port on the admin
    server.
Logging onto admin server via admin port is broken currently. I wouldsuggest
you to set only listen port
    and see how that goes.

Any ideas how to fix the problem?

    Dear all,
the encryption was NO on all protocols.
Because no additional ideas available, i uninstalled the SQL Server on friday.
At the Re-Install Process i got again an error:
[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Shared Memory Provider: No process is on the
other end of the pipe .
    The install process failed.
On google i found the same problem in an other thread:
    http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.sqlserver.connect/browse_thread/thread/dbec4a9a271f69a6/7cd22694da3a6062?lnk=st&q=%22Shared+Memory+Provider%3A+No+process+is+on+the+other+end+of+the+pipe%22&rnum=2&hl=en#7cd22694da3a6062
    ++++++
During the installation process of SQL Server 2005, Setup complains it cannot
connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was:
[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Shared Memory Provider: No process is on the
other end of the pipe .
I have checked that the pipe exists (\\.\pipe\SQLLocal\MyInstance), but
everytime the installer attempts the connecting the pipe is closed by the
server and another is reopened. That's why the Client says there is no
process on the other end of the pipe.
I have re-installed 'everything', tried connections via TCP, but nothing
    works.
I have made a small application to connect to the pipe and noticed that
there are 3 instances of the pipe running, one that I am connecting to, and 2
listening pipes. If I write to 'my' pipe SQL server disconnects the pipe and
reopens another too. The difference is that SQL server writes an error
message in the log file. No such luck when the Native client is doing the
    same.
    What more can I do?

    and an answer

I finaly found the problem to be the certificate used.
I noticed that a certificate was added to the machinekeys just recently.
    (in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
    Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys)
I renamed it to another name and re-installed sql server.
I noticed that sql server ERRORLOG complained about certificate that it
couldn't load and the generation of a self-generaed certificate (see below)
"2005-12-10 21:01:02.30 Server      The server could not load the
certificate it needs to initiate an SSL connection. It returned the following
error: 0x8009030d. Check certificates to make sure they are valid.
    2005-12-10 21:01:02.49 Server      A self-generated certificate was
    successfully loaded for encryption."
    Now the installation succeeded
    ++++++
With Windows 2008 it was really a challange to get access to this folder (!!!)
After clearing the folder the ReInstall of SQL Server works fine.
Now the SQL Server & the SQL Server Agent works again.
The problem was anything with encryption, old certs & files.
I don't think that everyone can afford reinstalling SQL server.
I finaly found the problem to be the certificate used.
I noticed that a certificate was added to the machinekeys just recently.
    (in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
    Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys)
I think this is what the following blog was saying , a problem with certification

  • Connect Timesten server remotely without using timesten client

I know it's a silly question but this is what i want to do:-
I have my java application and I want to connect to the timesten server present on remote machine and moreover I don't have the permission to intall any Timesten Client or App server(weblogic/glassfish) on timesten server. The only thing I had is my java application with plane java connection class to connect to Timesten Server from my machine.
Is this possible or not? And if it is possible please help me out with some ideas...
    Thanks in advance!!!

It's not possible. The client/server protocol is proprietary and undocumented and even if you could make it work it would be completely unsupported.
What you need to do is implement your own 'server' that runs on the TimesTen machine. In this server you implement all the database access requirements for your application. Your application then talks to the server using your own protocol in order to access TimesTen. Although it is more work this is a good design pattern and, if it is well designed and implemented, may actually deliver better performance than normal client/server.

  • DataSource at Report Server is not able to connect another server

    Hi All,
I am having two servers on different Domain; One where my default SQL 2012 database Instance is present (say: Server 1), and another server where Report Server 2012 is installed (say Server 2).
From Management Studio, I am able to connect database server 1 from server 2. Even I am able to Ping server 1 from server 2.
But when I am creating Data Source at Report Server (Server 2), to connect Database Server (Server 1), I am getting below error:
"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
I using below connection string in Data Source:
    Data Source=SERVER1;Initial Catalog=msdb
    Below are the additional information:
Server Instance Protocols on Server 1: Named Pipe, TCP/IP and Shared Memory are Enabled
SQL Services on Server 1: SQL Server, SQL Browser are running
    Please help me on this.
    Thanks ,

Are you really connecting to the msdb database in your connection string?  What is the user you are connecting to the database as when you are in Management Studio?  Is it an SQL user or a Windows user?  Maybe whatever credentials you are
using in your datasource does not have access to the sql server?
And is it Server 1 or Server1? or is that just an example server name.  I agree with trying the ip address but make sure you are using the same credentials as you do in Management Studio

  • Problem when connecting sql server 2005 using SQL developer

    Hi,
I installed Sql developer and I am trying to connect sql server 2005 using windows authentication. I had previously the SSO folder problem saying the path is missing in java.library.path. I copied the SSO folder into Sqldeveloper directory. I changed the settings under computer management->services and applications->sql server configuration manager->sql server 2005 network configuration ->protocols for sqlexpress->I enabled TCP/IP.
Now I am getting an error saying "Failure-can not open user default database.Login Failed. Login failed for user ...".
I am able to connect thru ODBC driver using windows authentication.
Any help on this is highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Lakshmi

    Hi Martin,
Your solution has solved my problem too. Thanks for posting these workaround fixes :-)
However, there seem to be a problem with datetime fields. The query:
    select getdate()
    returns something like: oracle.datetimestamp.@1aed4
Is there a way to get around with this? Otherwise, using SQL Developer as a client for SQL Server doesn't serve the right purpose when we cannot access simple date fields :-)

  • Safari can't connect to server with parental controls on

I have one user with admin rights and one user plus guest with parental controls turned on. Recently when parental controls are turned on, I get 'safari can't connect to server' error. When I turn parental controls off again I can connect to the internet again. Why is this?

    Hi and welcome....
Unfortunately, Parental Controls can only be enabled on a non admin account.
See if there's a proxy set up for Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click "Change Settings" next to: Proxies.
That will launch System Preferences / Network - Proxies.
If there are any boxes checked under: Select a protocol to configure, deselect the box then click Ok.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
See if Safari can connect in a parental controlled user account.

apparently there is via the application Terminal...but I have no idea how to work it!

Have you been able to figure out what the issue is and/or what the library location should be?

  • Which SQL Server protocol is needed to communicate with Biztalk, Sharepoint, CRM, etc ...?

    Hello,
I just noticed that I have not configured the named pipes protocol for my Biztalk instance.
I search a list of SQL Server protocols needed by product.
For Biztalk, I now know that we need to enable TCP / IP, named pipes and disable shared memory.
Is it the same for Sharepoint and CRM?
I can’t find docs on protocols to enable / disable by product.
    Thank you in advance
    maxime

    Hi moi,
According to your description, for SharePoint, you must enable TCP/IP and Named Pipes protocols in the SQL Server Configuration Manager. After you have installed SQL Server, you must set the following ports to communicate through Windows Firewall, such as
TCP 1433 ,TCP 1434 , and UDP 1434. For more information about configuring SharePoint access services, you can review the following article.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12514.sharepoint-2013-access-services.aspx
For connecting to SQL Server when installing CRM, you need to enable “Named Pipes” protocol; If you want to connect to SQL Server remotely , you also need to enable “TCP/IP” protocol in the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
There is more information about network protocol, you can review the following article.

  • Connect to server

I need to connect to a server as two different identities from one computer at the same time.
This may sound strange but this is a problem stemming from the way the server owner has set up his system. It is set up so that one identity has access to certain directories and the other identity can access other directories. This is so that different people only have access as needed and to keep permissions simple (many use one of the logins). However, I need access as both identities. And, more importantly, both at the same time.
I normally connect to server using afp://servername login 1 and password 1. But, in order to work on files accessable under login 2 I have to dismount and disconnect then reconnect as login 2. This is a problem if I am working on many documents in one directory and need something from a directory in the other  account.
    Any help is appreciated.

Your only solution is to make a third account on the server that has access to the resources of user one and user two.  You can not mount multiple shares (or the same share more than once) from one server as multiple users.
The only possible way to do this (and I do not recommend it), would be to connect one user using the AFP protocol and the second using the SMB protocol.  Obviously, your shares have to accept both.  This can get dicey pretty quick though as there remains differences in the protocols and how the handle files.
I would suggest the creation of the "super" account.

You can't directly use the gateway - you can only access a gateway using a database link.
    So this won't work:
    $ sqlplus aa/aa@dg4msql
You need to connect to your Oracle database (for example as sysdba) and create a (public) database link:
    create [public] database link dg4msql connect to "<MS SQl Server username! identified by "<MS SQl Server password>" using 'dg4msql;
Once you create the database link you can now access the MS SQl Server tables:
    select * from "your MS SQL Server table"@dg4msql;
