Connect to Server vs mount_smbfs

I have a multi OS enviroment all connecting to one SMB share on a Linux server.  The windows computers & OSX 10.6 computers are able to connect to their respective share points with no issue.  The OSX 10.7 & 10.8 computers have difficulty connecting.
I have discovered that (in 10.7 & 10.8) using the mount_smbfs command, in command line, will connect these computers to the share without issue [mount_smbfs //$USER@server/FolderA/FolderB/sharepoint /my/mount/point].
However when using the Connect to Server function (Go > Connect to Server [smb://server/FolderA/FolderB/sharepoint) in Lion or Mountian Lion I get the error "The folder "FolderA" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."  This is correct that the user doesn't not have permission to map "FolderA", but I'm trying to mount "sharepoint" and FolderA & FolderB both have traverse permissions which should allow the user to jump over those folders.
Why doesn't Connect to Server work, and is there a way to get it working?  Or am I just stuck with making scripts for all my users?
Thanks

  • Finder error -36 when connecting to server - smbclient in terminal works

Finder > Go > Connect to Server
When ever I need to connect to a smb server using Finder, I get the constant error -36.
    In console :
mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed: syserr = Socket is not connected
mount_smbfs: could not login to server EXIT15: syserr = Socket is not connected
mount_smbfs: 2 failures to open smb device: syserr = Resource busy
mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed: syserr = Authentication error
mount_smbfs: error from NetrShareEnum call: exception = 382312500
I can sometimes select the share to mount, and it tries for a few seconds, never succeeds.
10.4.10, but this was also case previously. We have every single Mac with this symptom so it is 7 work units at the moment, a Mac Pro, MacBook Pros, MacBook, Mac mini.
Wired, wireless, and even VPN, no matter how the mac is connected to the net.
Every non-Mac server at work tested gives this error when trying to connect to their shares.
    smbclient in terminal works.
http://www.macwindows.com/tiger.html and Apple kbase article 301580 suggestions for nsmb.conf didn't make any difference. (the nsmb noauth being a very poor choice if it would work)
smb.conf and nsmb.conf any security settings don't make any difference.
I have working details for connection, so share, ip and dns name, username and password for connection work.
    Connecting from Terminal works.
Connecting from any Windows or Linux virtual machine on Fusion on these same Macs work too.
I have changed the workgroup to the correct one in Directory Access.
I have tried all connection syntaxes suggested in http://www.macwindows.com/tiger.html - none of them still work in Finder, always identical results.
    smbclient //dns-name-or-ip/sharename -W workgroup -U username
is the only viable workaround at the moment.
    Domain=[dnsnameofwhereconnected] OS=[EMC-SNAS:T5.4.21.400] Server=[NT1]
is what smbclient gives for server details when its connected.
As smb works from command line, it's not smb itself that is affected. Just Finder.
I don't have access to edit any settings on the servers that we need to connect to. Only sharename and password that work for connection, but don't allow any editing on the server's settings.
Ideas? This should work in Finder.
Smbclient and Fusion area already somewhat workarounds, so I'm not looking for any third party software for dealing with this.
I spent way too much time with AppleCare on this, and all I got was 90 minutes wasted.
    Ideas anyone???

I think I have found what caused it. Not solved, but at least this seems so far the most likely cause:
    The share name contains hyphen.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106471 Mac OS X 10.1 or later: How to Connect to Windows File Sharing (SMB) : Date Modified: August 01, 2007
“6. You cannot connect to a share with a name that contains a hyphen. Resolve the issue by giving the share a name that does not contain a hyphen.”
smbclient in Terminal is not limited to this "feature" of Finder of Mac OS X 10.1 that was not fixed or recoded to solve it or modify it since adding smb in it in 2001.
It's not possible to test this changing the share name to one that does not contain a hyphen, nor to have one added in this server.
For users that won't have Terminal access, the solution are .. remote desktop with admin user, have admin user come to mount the share in location, or use virtualization software and with it anything that works.
Probably too optimistic to think the smb parts would have been rewritten for 10.5.

  • SMB can't connect to server when dollarsign in address

Hey folks, this is an issue regarding OS X Lion, SMB and the dollar sign. A closely related question was discussed before https://discussions.apple.com/message/15680714#15680714 but did not solve my problem. I start this new discussion because in the old discussion the problem was marked as solved.
I have to connect to several network drives, using "Connect to Server" from the "Go" menu in Finder. The servers are:
    smb://SERVERNAME/user/MYNAME
    smb://SERVERNAME/Something$/Name
For both connections I use the same username and password. I can successfully connect to the first server which has no dollar sign in it, but I cannot connect to the second server which has the dollar sign in it. The message that I get tells me that I'm not using the correct user account. This, however, cannot be the case. Using a Windows PC I can connect to both servers using the same username and password.
Obviously, the problem is with the dollar sign. Any ideas on how to fix this issue would be appreciated.
    Cheers!

OK, here is a solution that worked for me:
First, I created a new folder in Finder. The new folder is  /Users/MYUSERNAME/THEDIRECTORY/NAME.
Then I open Terminal and type in the following:
    /sbin/mount_smbfs //USERNAME@SERVERNAME/Something$/NAME /Users/MYUSERNAME/THEDIRECTORY/NAME
(Terminal will ask for the password, so I have to type in the password each time, but nonetheless, it works for me.)
This command mounts the network drive in the folder I created in the first step.
I presume that it would be possible to write an AppleScript that uses this command and connects to several servers with just one click, so that I do not have to type the command each time I connect to the network drive.

Hi there, I am trying to connect to my server at work from home using a vpn connection. It connects fine and the time ticks along, but when i click go - connect to server, it comes up with connection failed. Please help!

... when i click go - connect to server, it comes up with connection failed.
If you're trying to connect to a Bonjour server on the remote network, that won't work over a layer 3 VPN. Use something like Hamachi or one of the SSH-tunnelling Bonjour proxy apps for that.

  • I have had my IPAD2 for quite a while but haven't activated my cellular data for about a year.  I am now trying to activate and when I go to cellular data, turn it on and try to tap view account i just get a message that says "connection to server lost".

I have had my IPAD2 for quite a while but haven't activated my cellular data for about a year.  I am now trying to activate and when I go to cellular data, turn it on and try to tap view account i just get a message that says "connection to server lost".  I could swear the last time I used cellular data you would see the signal in the upper left corner and I only see "no service" there, I am in a location where I know I should have service.  Is there something I should do to my IPAD?  I tried resetting, I tried clearing cookies and history in Safari (after reading a post n these discussions).  I don't know what to do next. My IOS version is 6.1.3.  I did go into Network from the general tab and I see it says "SIM not provisioned".    HELP and Thank you in advance.

    Hello Theresa818,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like the cellular data will not activate for some reason on the iPad.
I found this article that will help you resolve this issue here, named iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular Models): Troubleshooting a cellular data connection, found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4249
Check for a carrier settings update.
    Update your iPad.
Toggle the Cellular Data setting off and on under Settings > Cellular Data.
    Restart your iPad.
Tap Settings > General > About. Locate the Carrier entry and make sure that your carrier is correct.
If your SIM card has SIM PIN enabled, try turning it off: Tap Settings > Cellular Data > SIM PIN.
Make sure you're in an area of good coverage. If the cellular data connection works in another area, contact your carrier to report the original affected area.
Reset network settings: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    Restore the iPad as new.
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store, contact your carrier, or contact AppleCare to troubleshoot further.
I know you may have done one or two of the steps here, so you can skip those.
    Take care,
    Sterling

    Hello Guys,

SAP Gui -> our SAP Router -> VPN Box from Customer -> Firewall Customer -> ABAP Stack PI System
    - WebAccess its working fine, the Customer use Webdispatcher on every PI Server...
Browser -> VPN Box from Customer -> Firewall Customer -> Java Stack (Port: 5xx00 btw. 81xx (Webdispatcher))
    Problem:
Our Problem ist, we can not proceed the Integration Builder or the ESB, the Java Web Start works fine and open the Logon Screen Correctly -> but i fill the Logon Screen with my User name and Password and press Logon come the follwing Error:

Can everybody help me, or have tips for me! I have checked a lot of OSS Messages (PI High Availabilty etc... its all correct on the System)
    Sorry for my bad English
    Best Regards,
    Markus

    Hi Markus,
did you check if the browser is using a proxy? (In this case your scenario unfortunately won't work).
P4-port should generally be routed via a proxy (described in the help.sap.com), but within the PI-Tools(JNLP) the proxy-usage is not implemented.  There is even a SAP-note that describes how to check the JavaWebStart-Proxyconfiguration, but this won't help either.
If there is a proxy defined in the browser everything is working fine till you pass the logon-screen but even with the correct "javaws"-settings you won't be able to go on.
(This problem is pretty bad if you do have developers and the SAP-servers seperated because of security issues. I'm hoping that this malfunction will be solved with upcoming patches.)
Solution: Establish a connection without any proxy in between.
E.g.: a terminal server in the same network
It would be helpful to find more people with the same problem to force a fix from SAP for that.
If anyone else is having problems with this, please add a comment to this thread.
    Best regards
    Christian

  • "Connection to server failed" error with Gmail exchange server

    Hi,
I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.3 on Friday and now I can't access my Gmail account using the Microsoft Exchange settings, I just get a "Connection to server failed" error.
I also have a Google Apps email account for my website and I am able to access it using exchange... it's just my regular Gmail account that I can't access (and that's where all my contacts are stored).
I can access the account using the regular Gmail email settings but that doesn't sync my contacts over the air, which is the advantage of using Exchange that I love the most.
I don't know if it is related or not, but I had a really hard time upgrading to iOS 4.3. I guess the update file was corrupt and it put my phone into restore mode. I had to use a different computer for the upgrade to finally work. Because I was using a different computer I had to restore it as a new phone rather than restoring from a backup, so maybe that has something to do with my email problem.
    Message was edited by: KJones75

I seem to have solved the problem. I deleted my Gmail account from the phone and then changed my Gmail password from my computer, and then tried adding the account to my phone again... and surprise, surprise, it worked.
I'm not sure why changing the password fixed the problem, but I'm glad it's working again.

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
You will have to re enter your Wi-Fi password.
If nothing above helped, restart your router.
No data is lost due to a reset.
