Loading local Java program when Applet is started
Okay, I am trying to write a Java applet that is used as an online scheduler for one of the professors in the college I work at (I am also a student so I haven't taken a lot of programming classes but know networking and GUI's for Java)
I was going to set up the program to connect to a server that is always running locally to save the information for the scheduler but my boss does not want something running all the time. Is there any way to start a program (and check if the program is running) on the local host? I would need to be able to start the program when someone connects, and be able to connect to the currently running program if a second user connects. Is this possible? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
StephenDefine "does not want something running all the time". I mean, if you are serving an applet, you are running a web server all the time. If you are running a web server, it'd be trivial to run a MySQL database and have the applet just use JDBC to talk to the database (so long as the DB is running on the same machine as the web server, you shouldn't have to worry about signed applets). Then can both be configured to start automatically if the machine is rebooted.
Granted, connecting to a database from an applet is probably not very secure, becuase the password would be fairly exposed to people that know what they are doing. So one way around this is to run some CGI or JSP/servlets or something in the web server that the applet can talk to, which in turn handles the database connection. -

of course you could add some more elaborated stuff like compiling files before running the program, etc.
if you dont like terminals, try running "nautilus" (it's like Windows Explorer). i never use nautilus (especially for running scripts), so i cant guarantee it will work, although i dont see why it shouldnt... -

Thank you.You can use java.lang.Runtime.exec or java.lang.ProcessBuilder to execute external programs like wget. Generally you pass one of those methods an array of Strings; the first String is the name of the executable, and the rest are arguments. You get a Process object that represents the running process that you've started; you can get standard input and output streams from that Process to read output. This is probably stuff your teacher already told you...but if not, hope it helps.

I have been reading the java tutorial to find a solution to my problem but I havent really found what Im looking for.
I want to establish a connection that allows a client to get a copy of an object from a running java-application on a server on the internet.
I have read about the Socket-class but the tutoral advices only to use it on a locale network. I know IDL and RMI only by name - is this what I should be reading about?
If one of you guys have a source-code example on how to make java programs communicate over the net, please post it!
Regards AlbertAssuming this is "wide area" stuff, not just on a local area network, your best bet is to stick to http connections. You need a web server, probably Tomcat.
Your client can connect using URL.openConnection().
As to protocols you could use SOAP. It has the advantage that you can get the code for it for free, but it can be pretty complicated to configure. In particular it only knows how to transmit a limited set of object types and if you want to go beyond them you have to write converters. SOAP servers typically run under an web server anyway. SOAP converts all the data to XML for transmission.
However it may be simpler to use Java's built in serialisation facility and send your data as an ObjectStream.
In the set up you're talking about the message going to the server seems a lot simpler than the response. It may make sense to send your data as normal keyword parameters of a POST transaction but to have the server respond with an Object stream. That's well within the normal operation of a web server. -

I'm very new to the Java language and have been given a fairly complicated (to me) program to do for a course I'm taking. The following is the scenario. The program is the follow the following logic:
Organizations A's Client (Org_A_Client.java) uses Organization A's interface (Org_A_Interface.java) but we want A's Client to also be able to use Organization B's services as well (Org_B_FileAuthorMgr.java, Org_B_FileDateMgr.java, Org_B_FileIOMgr.java).
Now a portion of this program also involves validating an xml file to it's dtd, extracting information from that source xml file through the use of a XMLTransformation file, and applying the transformation to produce a targetxml file which is then validated against a target DTD. 2. Validate the Source XML against its DTD

5. Validate the Target XML against its DTD
Now I'm not asking for a free handout with this program completed as I really want to learn how to do a program like this, but I really don't have ANY prior java experience other than creating basic classes and methods. I don't know how to bring the whole program together in order to make it all work, so any guidance for making this work would be greatly appreciated.
I've researched over 100 links on the web and found alot of useful information on adapter patterns with java and facade patterns, as well as SAX/DOM examples for parsing xml documents and validation of the DTD, but I can't find anything that ties this all together. Your help will be saving my grade...I hope :). Thanks so much for reading this.No one has anything to add for working on this project? I could really use some help, especially for creating the code for the adapter/facade pattern classes.

Can't run java program with GUI
My computer can run java program properly.
However, for those program with GUI (using swing),
my computer is unable to display the GUI.

Slow performance of Java program with Oracle db on Solaris
Hi all,
I'm developing a Java program to read a large no. of records (arnd 40,000) from a file and populate into an Oracle database on a Solaris system. I'm using a thin JDBC driver. The problem is that the program runs very slow on Solaris.
When I run the Java program on a Windows machine (and connect to the Solaris machine) the program runs quickly. However when I run the program on the Solaris machine itself, it runs around 20 times slower. I need the program to run faster in the Solaris environment. Can anyone help?
The SPARC system used is SunOS 5.8, 4GB memory, 2*750MHz processors
