Connecting from VB to Oracle without a client installation

Hi,
In my web page, i have an activex dll which is downloaded in the client machine which in turn has to connect to a Oracle 9i database .The client machine doesnt have Oracle client software installed.Could anyone please help me how i can go about this?
I am using Oracle ODBC Driver, since the program executes stored procedures which return REFCURSOR.

Without any Oracle client software, you are going to have a real problem.
If you were to use Java, you could use the thin JDBC driver to connect to Oracle, though there are some pretty significant security restrictions on JDBC calls from an applet.
If you are writing a VB component, you don't have a lot of options. You could look into the 10g Instant Client, but that still requires the installation of components on the client machine. It may be a small enough install, though, to work for you. Short of that, you could look into purchasing some of the third-party wire protocol ODBC drivers for companies like DataDirect. Again, this requires the installation of components on the client machine, but it may be a small enough footprint to work for you. Of course, the wire protocol approach is more expensive since you have to license your ODBC driver.

I have not seen this one .... Ensure that the install directory as well as any init directory use the conventional/old 8 character name, like D:\Work\Oracle. No spaces. I say so because it is suspicious that the error refers to C:\Documents....\

  • Oracle 10g instant client installation

    hi,
im trying to install the instant client needed on our sparc solaris server and i have a little background on solaris and java (took a few classes in college) and now i'm being asked to install the instantclient to our server.

    http://download.oracle.com/otn/solaris/instantclient/111060/basic-11.1.0.6.0-solaris-sparc64.zip
however, im not really used to the open source environment and i have already followed up to the step 3, i extracted the files to a to the directory /oracle/app/instantclient and typed the command "export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/oracle/app/instantclient" and now i have no idea what to do next. i tried running all of the other files in the zip file but i only encounter errors.

    Hi,
I have an application that uses Oracle 11gr2. For the Oracle client installation, I first install InstantClient and then run the setup again, choose Custom, and choose "Oracle Database Utilities" since the InstantClient doesn't have exp/imp with it.
My question is, instead of doing 2 steps for installation, how can I just do it once? What corresponding option(s) do I have to select in Custom mode to install InstantClient? Here's a link to a pic for the complete list of items available: http://i.stack.imgur.com/gUT7g.jpg
    Thanks.
    "choose?"
    "Custom"?
    an installation GUI?
That doesn't sound like Instant client.
That sounds like the normal fat client.
What is the name of the file you downloaded?

  • Problems with connection from PHP to Oracle DB

    Hello,
I have a Win2k3 Server with IIS 6.0 and PHP 5.1.2. and an Oracle Client 9i installed.
Recently I tried to connect via PHP to the DB but it failed with the following message:
"Warning: ocilogon() [function.ocilogon]: OCIEnvInit() failed. There is something wrong with your system - please check that ORACLE_HOME is set and points to the right directory in ...\php-skript\test\funk_test.php on line 54"
So I started looking in the internet for help and found a lot, but nothing that solved my problem. I tried everything (I think):
    * Oracle Client 9i regular Client- environment vars in all variations
    * Oracle Client 10g Instant Client- all variations again
    * I tried to delete all spaces in the "tns.ora" after a hint in another PHP-forum
    * I looked in this forum and found some hints
BUT: Nothing helped me to solve my problem.
So I changed my PHP-version from 5.1.2 to 5.0.4 and I got a different failure:
    "[26-Apr-2006 17:58:15] PHP Warning: ocilogon() [<a href='function.ocilogon'>function.ocilogon</a>]: _oci_open_server: ˜Õ‚ in ...\php-skript\test\funk_test.php on line 56"
This message is really strange, because it contains no information about the failure.
Has ANYONE another hint for me?? I really don't know what I should do.

Because it's IIS, I set the env vars manually. That means --> my computer/.../advanced/environment vars/etc.
After every change, I rebootet the IIS Service. Problem consists.
Let's have a look, if your links could help...
    ########## EDIT ##########
Ok, your links WERE INDEED REALLY helpful!
My problems were caused by missing access-rights.
    How to solve this problem:
    * reinstall your Oracle-client
    * inet-user needs now access rights for
    + "oracle"- folder
    + "oracle\bin"- folder
    + "tnsnames.ora"- file
    * set environment vars
    + NLS_LANG = AMERICAN
    + ORACLE_HOME = "C:\oracle\ora92"
    + TNS_ADMIN = "C:\oracle\ora92\network\ADMIN"
    * restart IIS
Now it should work!!! THX for your help!

  • DB Connect from BW on Oracle to MS SQL Server 2005

    Hello,
I am having issues replicating Meta-Data from SQL server databases via DBCONNECT to SAP BW.
For instance we have the CCM DB and the Siebel DB.  We can transfer meta-data from CCM with no problem (SQL Server 2000) but we cannot transfer meta-data from Siebel (SQL Server2005).
Our SAP BW is system is on an Oracle database.
CCM is on OS Win 2003. SQL 2000 SP4.
Siebel is on Win 2003 Server Enterprise 5.2 and SQL Server 2005 SP2.
I already have the dbsl for SQL server installed in the BW system. When I do a Connection Check of the source systems in RSA1, it says "Source system connection OK".
Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ajay

    Hi,
I don't think the 32 vs. 64 bit is the issue. Have you tried checking OSS note: 512739. It describes the prerequisites for accessing MS SQLServer via DB Connect. Normally problems occurs due to unsupported data types being used in SQLServer - in such cases you have to create views in the source system and then use these views instead of the actual database tables. In the view you can perform the necessary data type conversion.

  • Connection from jdeveloper to Oracle cloud service stopped working

My connection to the Oracle cloud using a jdeveloper application server connection stopped working. The connection worked fine for a couple of days and I was able to deploy apps using it.
I get the following error :
    Testing Cloud-Admin                    ... failed.
    listApplications failed.
    Check username, password, domain, instance.
Check cloud sdk location & version: Tools->Preferences->Oracle Cloud

I double checked the AUTH details and also made sure the sdk location was correct and the same one that worked correctly earlier.
    Thanks.

So this works intermittently without any changes ? Sounds peculiar, I haven't had such issues though there have been few occasions where the connection did not work, but those have always been very brief and rare. The only thing I can think of is some sort proxy issue. You probably need to contact the JCS support to get the issue investigated ..

  • SQL Server/Client Version cross connectivity or in other words, connecting from one version of an SQL client to another version of an SQL server.

I wasn't sure, so I'm posting this question to understand better.  If I have an SQL Server on SQL 2005 and a client running SQL 2000, can that client talk to the server?  Also, if I had the opposite, a Server on SQL 2000 and a client on SQL 2005, is communication possible?
    Thanks for the SQL help!

From my experience, a newer client with an older server cannot use a new data type either. I tried this with a SQL Server 2008 R2 client against a database on a SQL Server 2000 instance.

  • How to connect from sybase to oracle

    Hi All,
    We are facing a problem:
    1. We have an application which has Sybase database. Its an Unix system with Powerbuilder GUI. Earlier it used to connect to other application which Mainframe and has Sybase database through Dblink and stored procedure will fetch data in real time.
    2. This other database is getting replaced by Oracle 10g,so Dblink and current stored procedure will not work.
    3. We need a solution for this but this solution needs to be cost effective and minimum changes since this application is going to be phased out in a years time.
Can anybody can provide there valuable inputs?? Thanks in advance.

Looks like a Sybase question to me.
You should ask this in a Sybase froum.

  • Trouble connecting to 64 bit oracle client from 32 bit environment

    Hi,
I have an application which connects to Oracle and an external 3ed party application via a set of APIs. We are now facing the issue while migrating our server from 2003 to 2008.
The 2003 server was configured for 32 bit and had 32 bit Oralce installed on it. It was able to connect to both Oracle and the 3ed party API in this configuration
In our New 2008 server we have installed a 64 bit Oracle however the 3ed party API is using is 32 bit. Once we use the 64 bit app poll we were able to connect  to the Oracle, but the API connection fails. When we enable the 32 bit in APP Pool, wer cant connect to the Oracle client.
Could you please suggest a possible soultion for this problem?
    PS:
We have tried placing the 32 bit Oracle.Data.Client DLL in the Bin folder and refered it in our project ( to avoid refering the 64 bit DLL from GAC) but this method didint work out.
We have alos tried placing Oracle Data Access Componets DLLs in Our bin as explianed in the following blog post
    http://researchaholic.com/2011/10/21/connect-from-net-to-oracle-without-installing-the-oracle-client/
This also did not help us connect to the Oracle client.
Right now we have configured our new 2008 server with 64 bit oralcle client and enabled 32 bit support from APP pool.
    Thanks

You can't use 64 bit client on 32 bit machine.
You can use 32 bit client on 64 bit machine via syswow64, but not the other way around.
If you compile your app with AnyCPU compile target though, it will automatically run as 32 bit on 32 bit OS, and 64 bit on 64 bit OS.

        (DESCRIPTION =
           (ADDRESS_LIST =
              (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ip_address)(PORT = 1521))
           (CONNECT_DATA =
              (SERVICE_NAME = XE)
    {code}Test with
    {code:java}
    sqlplus SYSTEM/password@XE
    {code}

  • How to connect from Oracle 9i database on windows to sap database (orcle 8)

    Hi,
I really need expert advice from anyone..I wud like to connect my Oracle 9i database running on windows platforms to SAP database (oracle 8) running on Unix platform.
Is there any special code to establish the connectivity...or we can simply use the ORacle net services(tnsnames.ora) file to connect to the SAP database??
I wud really appreciate any expert comments on this.
    Thank you
    Ratheesh

    Hi Ratheesh
If you are able to create an ODBC connection from the Windows Oracle server to the SAP database then you can use Oracle Heterogeneous Services to query the SAP database from Oracle through a DB link. To configure Heterogeneous Services is quite easy. You put an entry into the SID_LIST_LISTENER part of the listener.ora file:
    (sid_desc=
          (sid_name=hsql)
          (oracle_home=C:\oracle\ora92)
          (program=hsodbc)
)  Then create an entry in your tnsnames.ora file to connect to your new listener service:
    apmacnew =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = tcp)(HOST = cntrra20-lab20)(PORT = 1527))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (Service_name = apmacnew)
        (HS = ok)
)And lastly create a database link using the tnsnames entry.

  • Jobserver not available from specific client installation (from Designer)

    Hi,
I have installed Designer on a PC and everything seems to work fine, except I can not run jobs using the associated jobserver.
When I open up designer, I get a message that the jobserver is not available. When I go to the admin console (on the same PC) I can run jobs.
Also, when I use another computer and log on to the same repository, I can use the jobserver from the designer.
What can possibly be wrong at PC level which prevents me from using the jobserver from Designer?
I have re-installed designer but it did not have any effect.
Any help greatly appreciated - I have no idea how to troubleshoot this is also welcome.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jan.

    Hello,
    1.  Make sure that you can ping the Job Server from the client machine - Use the fully qulaified domain name (not ip address)
    2.  make sure that you can ing the client machine from the Job server - Use the fully qualified domain name (not ip address)
if steps 1 or 2 fail then you need to contact you network admin to resolve the connectivity issues. If you are able to connect using the ip address and not the fully qualified name, you can add an entry to you local host file.
    3.  make sure that you do not have a firewall blocking the Job Server port preventing inbound connections to the job server
    4.  make sure that you do not have a firewall blocking ports from the job server to the client machine.
The default port for the job server is 3500 make sure that this port is open for connections from the client
you must also make sure that there is no firewall blocking any ports for connectivity FROM the Job Server TO the client.
if so ask the network admin to unblock these or provide a port range for you to use.
if they provide a port range for connectivity from the job server to the client you must go to Tools --> options -->   Designer -->Environment and set the port range in the Designer communication ports section
