Connecting SQL Server 2K to Oracle

I am attempting to connect MS SQL Server 2K to an Oracle 9i instance using Microsoft's linked server feature. Both databases are on the same server, a Windows 2K Server. Per Microsoft's documentation, I am to install Oracle Client tools and SQL*Net, and then create a SQL*Net alias to my Oracle instance. Below is the tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora files containing the required alias. I create the linked server in MS SQL Server, and specify the below alias as the datasource. For the linked server login I specify the 'SA' account and an ID that I have set up in Oracle along with the password. When I attempt to connect via MS Enterprise Manager, I receive an error that reads "Error 7399: OLE DB Provider 'MSDAORA' reported an error." I can connect to both databases independently, but cannot figure out why the linked server from SQL Server to Oracle is not working. Any help at all on this will be appreciated. If anyone knows of documentation that addresses this will also be appreciated.
The file contents are as follows:
tnsnames.ora
# Filename......: tnsnames.ora
# Name..........: LOCAL_REGION.world
# Date..........: 19-JUN-97 08:39:28
orcl.world =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS =
(COMMUNITY = TCP.world)
(PROTOCOL = TCP)
(Host = <Host>)
(Port = 1521)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = orcl)
# Filename......: sqlnet.ora
# Date..........: 12-JAN-99 08:59:28
AUTOMATIC_IPC = OFF
TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = OFF
SQLNET.EXPIRE_TIME = 0
NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN = world
NAME.DEFAULT_ZONE = world

Hi. I cannot help You, but shares the problem. Have You figured out a solution to this problem?
If You have, could You please send me "the solution".
Thanx

  • How to connect to SQL server 2000 with Oracle Form

    Hi,
I'm looking for the document of how to connect "SQL Server 2000" with Oracle Form 6i. Anyone knows that?

    Shay or other knowledgeable folks,
Is there a way to utilize the wizard for "Business Tier > ADF Business Components > Business Components from Tables" for SQL Server 2000, 2005 or 2008. I can successfully execute sql via java programmatically or import a table from SQL Server with "Business Tier > ADF Business Components > Entity Object" wizard, but the Business Components from Tables simply doesn't see any tables under any schema. Without the "Business Components from Tables", i don't get the referential constraints imported into the application and to code all those from scratch is just not as elegant. So far i have only utilized the sql server jdbc driver from Microsoft (versions, 1.1, 1.2 and 2.0). Is there an alternative client that i need to use to enable selecting tables from that "Business Components from Tables" wizard. Is this a limitation of SQL Server, the jdbc driver or the wizard itself? Did anybody else experience the same issues? I am using Jdeveloper 11.1.1.0.1 against SQL Server 2005 (currently)
    Thanks,

Please expalin me the steps what to add and how to connect the sql server...

Are you trying to connect to SQL Server from your Oracle database (i.e. create a database link in Oracle to SQL Server)? Or are you trying to connect to SQL Server using your Oracle client software (i.e. SQL*Plus)?
The former just requires Heterogeneous Services with Generic Connectivity. The latter is functionality that has been depricated and probably no longer works in your environment.

  • Connecting to Windows SQL server from Unix Oracle Server

How can I connect to Windows MS SQL server from Unix Oracle Server? What installation or package will I need?

    Two options:
    1) Do a search on "Oracle Transparent Gateways" and/or "Heterogenous Services". These are products that are designed solely to connect to other databases from Oracle.
    2) Use a type-4 JDBC driver for SQL Server, installed and running in the JVM of your Oracle server. I'm assuming your Oracle database is sufficiently recent to be java-enabled here.

  • Connect to MS-SQL Server from a Oracle 10g running under Solaris

    Hi,
I have the following problem. I want to access a MS-SQL server from an Oracle database (10g Enterprise licence) that is running on Solaris.
After googling a while, the following questions arise:
    - Is it correct that the Oracle Transparant Gateway for the SQL Server is not available on Solaris platforms (but only on Windows)?
    - Is it right, that the second possibility to solve this problem is to use an SQL-Server odbc driver for Solaris and access the SQL-Server over ODBC? And: Is this feature included in the Enterprise licence?
    - If yes, which driver is good and cheap ;-)?
    - Is there any other way to solve this problem?
    Thanks

I believe the Transparenet Gateway for SQL Server is available on Solaris. The problem is that you need a Unix based ODBC driver which you will also need to pay for.
We had this same problem and decided to run a windows based Heterogeneous Services gateway and routed through it instead of using the SQL Server transparent gateway. The Heterogenous severives gateway is NOT an add on product (as is Transparent Gateway). The drawback would be performance as I would expect the native MS SQL transparent gateway to perform better, but in our case it worked acceptably.

  • Oracle 10g connectivity with sql server 2000 through oracle transpa gateway

    dear gurus.
i am to connecto oracle 10g with sql server 2000 through oracle transparent gateway.
i have installed transparent gateway and proper configured. also link is created.
but when i execute query "select * from city@inventory" , so an error displayed.
ORA-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process.
kindly suggest me what could be the cause.
    regards,

if the listener fails to spawn a dedicated server process it is commonly indicating an issue with the listener. So posting the listener and also a listener trace including a description of the env where you installed the gateway into which directory would be helpfull. Please keep also in mind if you have for example a 10.2.0.3 database and you install into this directoty a 10.2.0.1 gateway you have to reapply the patchset again do get consistent file version.
So please describe more detailed your env.

    Hi,
It seems that your configuration is Ok. By the way, the workaround for this error is:
ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
[Transparent gateway for ODBC][H001] The environment variable <HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO> is not set.
    * Set HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO in the hs{sid}init.ora file to the data source name.
    Example: HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = <ODBC DataSource Name>
    * Make sure the hs{sid}init.ora file exists in the ORACLE_HOME/hs/admin directory and has the same name as the SID in the LISTENER.ORA.
Example: If SID=hsodbc in the listener.ora file, then the hs{sid}init.ora file would be named ORACLE_HOME/hs/admin/inithsodbc.ora

  • Move data from sql server v8  to oracle 10g

I just got urgent projects to migrate the data from MS SQL server 2000 to oracle 10g. The following are requirements:
Source data/table: MS sql server 2k (version 8) on MS 2000 machine.
    Destination Data/table: oracle 10g (10.1.0.4) on Redhat version 3.
Total number of tables: < 10 tables and < 1000 rows each tables.
This is only one time data extraction. No periodically data extraction need.
    Questions:
What connect method I should use? (odbc or jdbc)
What if I have image datatype?
    Thanks in advance.

    Use the Oracle Migration Workbench.

I think IMAGE will be migrated to BLOB by default.

  • Migration From SQL Server 2005 to Oracle DB through Oracle SQ Dev Problem

    Hi all,
we are trying to do a full Migration from MS SQL Server 2005 to Oracle DB 9.2 i
we are using Oracle SQL Developer V 1.5.3,
the capturing of the DB and the conversion to the oracle model completed succefully
however when we try to generate the scripts from the converted model
the script generation hangs on a sequence and no further progress is made (the script generation pop up keeps still on a certain sequence displaying its name, and thats it )
    no error messages are displayed,
how can we know the reason for this? or atleast find a log for whats happening...
    any suggestions?
    Thank you

    Hi,
migrating a sequence shouldn't make a problem. I did a quick test. I created this table in SQL Server:
    create table test_seq (col1 int identity(1,1),col2 char(1))
Then I captured the table, converted the table and generated the script. There was no problem.
    CREATE SEQUENCE succeeded.
    CREATE TABLE succeeded.
    Connected
    TRIGGER test_seq_col1_TRG Compiled.
As you see, applying the script was also successful.
I am using Oracle RDBMS 11g, I don't know whether this makes a difference. Do you have any 11g instance available to test it?
Can you show me one of the sequences that are causing the hang? Is the CREATE SEQUENCE statement already in the generated script, or not? Your table is for sure more complex than my simple example.
    Regards,
    Wolfgang
