Connecting to mysql database, http 500 error

Question

I have dreamweaver cs3, I have setup my site, set up my
testing server and am trying to setup my mysql connection. I am on
a windows xp pro. My testing server is on a local network
connection and is running ISS 5, PHP 5, and mysql 5. I am going to
run a php-mysql server.
I type in the Connection name, I type in the ip of my mysql
server, I type in my username and password, then I click select for
the database. It says loading then stops and an error message pops
up:
Title: Adobe Dreamweaver CS3
Message: HTTP Error Code 500 Internal Server Error.
I was getting the same message on Dreamweaver 8.
It isn't a webpage so I can't find more information on it.
Can anyone help me?

2100 xmas eve so a quick idea
can you connect outside DW?
ie if you use phpmyadmin or something like-sqlylog using
settings similar
to:
host address : local host
username root (installed by default I beleive)
Password whatever you set up.
If you can then the problem is with dw if you cant then you
need to look at
your mysql/php installation.
I know there are several automatic install programs such as
wamp and several
others which will install mysql and php etc but I used David
Powers
excellent book which whilst treating you like a "Muppet"
takes you through
installing everything at then end it works! As an added bonus
he's always
floating round the forum and you gain knowledge on php
