Connection drops randomly for hours at a time, can...

Hi everyone
We've been experiencing this problem since just before Christmas and it seems to be getting worse as time passes.
For the majority of the time everything works fine with great speeds but periodically the connection will drop to incredibly slow speeds (~0.20mbps) for about half an hour and then the connection will just drop out completely. The bizarre thing is, while the speed is slow accessing "bthomehub.home" becomes just as slow as accessing a website and when the internet goes down you simply cannot access it at all. After physically unplugging the hub and powering it back on, internet speeds return to normal only to repeat the cycle a few hours later.
After getting in contact with BT, they sent us a replacement hub, which didn't help the issue, and they've also said that there's apparently nothing wrong with our line. My first thought was that it is a wireing issue but surely that doesn't explain the fact that when our internet goes down we cannot access "bthomehub.home"? That doesn't make any sense to me at all as we can access it fine when the internet's behaving!
The downtime also seems to be much worse between the hours of 1am and 5am but will also happen at random times during the day.
Anyway, I'm at a loss and it appears BT is also so I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar situation and has managed to find a fix.
EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm using the HH3. I've also realised that disabling the router's Firerwall seems to stop the internet dropping out completely and instead the speed seems to only drop to about 10mbps (we get ~40 normally) which I can certainly live with. Not sure if this will be a long term fix but could it be the Firewall that's causing the problem?
Thanks
Solved!
Go to Solution.

You could see if BT are willing to supply an HH3B.  People generally seem to have better experience with those than the 3A. Probably best to contact the mods to see if they can help with that.  http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951 .  But be aware they take 3 working days to reply: sometimes more if busy.
I can't suggest any alternative; it's not perfect but the HH3B has been fine for us.  Main drawback has been the inability to set alternative DNS servers at the router.  There are a few threads about alternative routers.  One active one is http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/List-of-Routers-to-replace-Home-Hub-3/m-p/742512#U742512

What you can try is to add:
    option "UseEvents" "false"
(also try "true" and see if it works for you)
to your xorg.conf under the device section. Play with both false and true settings, UseEvents is somewhat related to the short freezes and the nvidia guys mentioned they disabled this feature a few driver releases ago (as far as i know from researching their forums). Otherwise we probably have to wait for a new driver series.
Another tweak would be to check if you use MSI for your nvidia card:
    cat /proc/interrupts:
    22: 0 4 1106 297835 IO-APIC-fasteoi ohci_hcd:usb3
    23: 1 17 3275 890447 IO-APIC-fasteoi hda_intel
    27: 2 13 1035 342106 PCI-MSI-edge ahci
    28: 5 337 26356 7568321 PCI-MSI-edge eth0
    29: 6 92 10219 1998835 PCI-MSI-edge nvidia
    NMI: 0 0 0 0 Non-maskable interrupts
add this to /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf: (does not work with all nvidia cards but i can confirm it works with the 200 series)
    options nvidia NVreg_EnableMSI=1
While using MSI slightly improves performance some people reported it also shortens the occasional freezes.
As said in the post above this is only for nvidia and it may or may not help for some gpu's.
    Best regards

  • If my wife wants to buy an ipad II what does she need to do shopping for hours at a time on the internet while driving

My wife wants to do internet searches and shop for hours on end while I'm driving.  What does she need if we get an Ipad 2?
Some people here at the office say I need Wi-Fi.  Some say 3G.  Some say I need to sign up with a carrier on some type of monthly plan to get the internet.
    Help!!
I need this while we drive from state to state and not for getting on the internet through some hotel Wi-Fi Connection.
    Thanks,
    BaylinerKing

3G coverage and overall performance between Verizon and AT&T varies depending on where you are, and depending on where you are you may have no 3G service at all with any carrier.
The other consideration is the price-points of various data plans, they differ between size and cost.
But all plans are month-to-month, meaning that you can turn the service off anytime you want, and for as long as you want, but when you activate 3G service you pay for 30 days of service regardless if you turn 3G off (so turn it off on the 29th day if you won't need 3G next month).  You can do all of this right from the iPad, and you don't have to set anything up at the time of purchase (other than choose your carrier).  I bought a Verizon 3G iPad 6 weeks ago and have not yet activated 3G, but will do so soon while travelling.

  • Why is my iPad not able to download mail for hours at a time while the iPhone next to it has no problem?

Why is my iPad not able to download mail when the iPhone next to it can and the iPad may be able to do it 24 hours later with no change in settings?  This happens with multiple email accounts at the same time in several locations on many occasions.  The setting is to check emails every 15 minutes.   It says it is checking but nothing comes up while it does on my Mac or iPhone

I have exactly the same problem here.
Can see new email appearing straight away on the iPhone and Windows pc, but very erratic on the iPad.  Sometimes the emails appear immediately on the iPad, other times they don't appear for hours.
One thing I have noticed if I go and change the "delete messages - remove" setting to something other than what it was set (for instance from "never" to "one month") it seems to jiggle something and the outstanding emails all suddenly appear.

  • Wireless connection drops out for no reason

I have a macbook with 10.4.11 update. I had my macbook since october last year and had no problems. About two months ago now i have this problem were my wireless connection drops for no reason, my modem/router shows everything is working normal with its lights on the front panel.
My setup is, motorola sbg900 on a cable 80000mbps wireless network, firewall off on my modem, firewall on on my mac (its always been on), Playstation 3(wireless), PC(wireless, but is switched off), another pc which is wireless and also off, nintendo wii off as well, and a baby monitor.
I have a feeling its nothing to do with my setup(except for maybe port forwarding) but am wondering if it is an update issue bug that needs to be fixed(thats what im hoping).
One other thing, when my connection drops in the menu bar and i select it to see which networks are availale, my network motorola8566 is not visible, another 'motorola9522' and 'wireless' network is?My prefered networks dont list any of these in system preferences. Then all of a sudden those other networks dissapear, my network is reshown and i can select it no propblems. What gives? Any help would be great, thanx in advandce

  • My Macbook Pro ran out of battery last night and wouldn't turn back on even when connected to power for a period of time. However, when I woke up, it did turn on. Is there a reason this happened and should I get it looked at?

Last night, I was watching something on my Macbook Pro and it died (out of battery). I went to plug it in and waited a couple of minutes to try and start it back up. However, when I connected the power source the light was green, which could not have been the case since I know 100% it was out of battery. I proceeded to hold the start button for a long period of time, but my computer made no noise and refused to turn on - it looked like for all intensive purposes it was dead. I left it alone overnight praying that it would be alright in the morning and luckily, when I opened the computer this morning it was restarted and fine. I'm concerned because I've had this happen to me a couple of times and while it always turns back on, I feel like there is a bigger issue that I need to get addressed. Can anyone help me with this? Any ideas? Thank you!

Apple recommend calibrating the battery when you buy a new Macbook and then every few months, or monthly if it used on mains all the time. This, as Apple says is to keep the battery operating at maximum efficiency. When the battery discharges and shuts the macbook down, it still has reserve power for a good number of hours. There is also a logic board battery to hold various settings.
I rather think I will take Apples advice on using their equipment not yours, but I would be intrigued to discover what is it you know that Apple doesnt about its batteries?

I have no such problem with Internet Explorer or when the computer is not connected to the Internet; it is specific to FF. I do not have Webroot Spysweeper on my computer.
Strangely enough, we do not have this problem with two other PCs that use FF, nor did I have it on these two computers during the first few years that I used them with FF. I bought a new PC, moved my files onto it, then suddenly it had the same problem, which is what made me think it was a malware issue.
I checked Windows Defender and found that was not switched on and could not be switched on. So I bought three different anti-malware programs beginning with Malwarebytes and then SpyBlaster and SpyBot S&D. But they did no good.
Just pressing the "continue" button in response to the script error message does not good, since it allows the computer to continue grinding to a halt. Worse, if those scripts are malware, I don't want them sending private info to internet sites, which is apparently their function.
Please help me root out the problem. It has made my computer inoperative for several hours a day for the past few months.

  • Wireless does not load balance and Connection drops to 1Mbps at a certain time

    Hi,
We had wireless LAN setup and it seems that every afternoon, the connection notification on their laptop drops to 1Mbps and slowness on the network is experienced. how can I identify the cause of this drop connection speed?
Also when one of the APs went down, the other nearby APs does not cover for the AP that went down, is it not supposed to cover for the downed AP?
BTW out setup is LAP with 4400 series WLC with VoWLAN running on it but on differed radio and SSID. Data is on b/g while VoWLAN is on A.

also i am seeing a lot of coverage hole detection on the logs.
is there any problems with the coverage of the APs? should I place additional APs to cover up the holes? If you have available funds/resources then putting additional APs won't hurt ... especially if one of the APs fail.  Putting additional APs will also help distribute the clients.if it is cause by rouge AP how can i prevent it.
First, you have to know what radios is the AP using.  For example, if the Rogue AP is using 802.11b then disable your 802.11b or use a different channel.  I'm curious to know this is the case since the WLC would've used a different channel if a Rogue AP is broadcasting on similar channel (unless there's just too many Rogue APs using 802.11b).
you recommed any steps on how can i trace sudden  surge of wireless use I'd like to identify/isolate how correct is my hypothesis that it's due to the sudden surge of wireless use.  If this is the case, then I'd also like to know what application(s) are being used to overwhelm the wireless.

I have Firefox set up to update automatically. The update window will occasionally pop open and remain in "connecting" mode for as long as the computer is on. Although this seemed odd, the process happens in the background so I'd assumed the updates were proceeding on schedule. Most importantly, the window "About Firefox", which I check to make sure the update occurred, does indeed indicate that Firefox is up to date. Today I visited the Mozilla site and realized I'm still using Firefox 5.01 when the current version seems to be 7. No idea about the status of plugins or any ancillary software.
