Connection fails if server and clients are in different subnets

Hello,
our Volume License Manager (v2.1) is running in another subnets than the clients (All machines are running under Windows XP-SP2 without Domains or ADS, just workgroups).
The server is in subnet A (192.168.42.0/24), all clients are located in another subnet  B (192.168.50.0/24).
Routing is properly configured and is working fine, traffic to the specific hosts is not blocked by a firewall. We can ping every machine,
open telnet connections to the NILM, everything works.
But if the clients try to connect to the remote NILM (both local client NI License Manager and VLM port settings are correct)  their connection attempt always
times out with error code "NILM10"
(I already read the mentioned KBs, no solution has helped so far). This is true if clients and server are separated.
For testing purposes, i plugged one client into the server's subnet (server's IP: 192.168.50.250, client 192.168.50.10)
and it worked perfectly. Is there a reason why  server and client have to be on the same subnet or is it some other kind of problem that I am not aware of?
Thank you.
Thorsten

Hello Thorsten,
Did you add the server's domain to the client computer's DNS settings. To do this, complete the following steps on the client computer:
1. Open Local Area Network Settings from the Control Panel (Start»Control Panel»Network Connections»Local Area Connection)
2. Click the Properties button
3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list of network components
4. Click the Properties button
5. Click the Advanced button
6. Change to the DNS tab
7. Ensure Append these DNS suffixes is selected
8. Click the Add button
9. Enter the domain suffix of the license server and click Add
10. Close any open dialog boxes, choosing OK and Close as necessary.

  • JAX-RPC: Web service where both server /and/ client are services?

I'm considering a two-way Web service in an application that I'm designing and would appreciate any insight from prior experience.
This will be a standard client-server application, where the server broadcasts messages and the client, in turn, can request further information about the messages that it receives (think RSS-style updates, but with more interaction). [strong]However[strong], instead of having the client poll the server for new messages, I'd like to have the client register itself with the server as a message listener. The server is currently implemented as a Web service on port X. I'd like the client to register itself with the server, and then receive messages on port Y.
I'm considering a design like the following (note the directions of the inheritance arrows):
    ( Server class )  --<-- ( RemoteServerImpl class ) -->-- / RemoteServer interface /
           |
    ( Listener class ) --<-- ( RemoteListenerImpl class ) -->-- / RemoteListener interface /Some considerations:
    * In both cases, the client and server are broken out into an interface and two classes. The non-Remote classes implement all of the functionality. The RemoteX interfaces declare the methods that will be exposed via RPC, and the RemoteXImpl classes are empty subclasses of the non-Remote classes.
    * In order to register itself with the Server, the Listener must be passed in as a method parameter, and thus conform to the JAX-RPC specification for value types. However, value types can't implement java.rmi.Remote.
    * Only the Server and Listener know anything about each other.
    * This application can be run either remotely or locally, depending on how the Server and Listener are instantiated. For the latter, they're instantiated directly and the listener is registered with the Server. For the latter, the RemoteX interfaces will point to the service stubs.
    * I don't see an easy way to allow both the Server and the Listener to have references to each other (at least now without some casting magic), since one of them will have to conform to the value type specification, which requires that all of its fields must be valid JAX-RPC types.
I've got the Server portions implemented and working, and am now going to turn to the Listener stuff. Can anybody see a fundamental problem with this design, or can suggest something better?

    Hi There,
Because web services are fundamentally a Services-oriented architecture, and not an Object-oriented one, you are unable to pass objects by reference (only by value) hence the design decision to not allow rmi.Remote objects to be sent across the wire. The best way would be to abstract an object which does itself not represent a server, but a route to a server (lets call it ServerPointer). This must contain address, port, service info, etc.
Now, in your Server class, create a factory method which takes a ServerPointer, and returns a reference to a
remote server, e.g. protected Server createServer( ServerPointer p ) (using the necessary APIs to get such a reference)
    Hope this helps...

  • CFIMAGE captcha issue - Cannot find /CFFileServlet, possibly because server and webroot are on different drives

CFIMAGE captcha was working on my DEV system, where the wwwroot is in the same folder as CFServer is installed.
It is NOT working when I move it to staging, which is identical to production - including the fact that CFServer is on D: drive, but wwwroot is on E: drive.
Is there a way to map a location for the CFFileServlet folder?  I think this is the reason it isn't working in staging.
    V/r,

May want to check your web server to be sure it's not Denying access to that folder based URL Request filtering.  Part of the ColdFusion lockdown guide recommends to Deny access to this folder unless you use CFImage, CFChart, CFPresentation, or CFReport.

  • WSUS server and client configuration issues

I just inherited WSUS from my predecessor (it was turned off because of a full disk) so I’m still learning how to use it. Turning it back on I changed where updates should come from, they were stored locally and now I’m pulling them down off of the Microsoft
Update location. What I’m seeing is that I have a bunch of computers that WSUS “sees” but are showing “Failed or Needed” status. Unless I visit each machine and manually do the updates this status does not change. Additionally I have some client computers
(Windows 7) that are not showing up as managed by WSUS. If I reading this right I’m running version Update Services 6.2.9200.16384 on Management Console 3.0 Version 6.2 (build 9200) on Windows Server 2012.
How can I force WSUS to automatically update the “Failed and Needed” devices?
How can I get those clients that are not being managed by WSUS to be managed?
Some of the things that I have done so far on the server and clients are:
Create a GPO (see attached for WSUS)
    wuauclt
    /detectnow
    wuauclt /reportnow
    wuauclt.exe /detectnow
    gpupdate /force after
    modifying the GPO
I even ran the SolarWinds WSUS diagnostic (as a non-administrator) and got this as the output:
    # Solarwinds® Diagnostic Tool for the WSUS Agent # 1/23/2015
    Machine state
User rights:  User does not have administrative rights (Administrator rights are not available)
      Update service status:  Running
      Background Intelligent Transfer service status:
    Running
      OS Version:  Windows 8.1 Pro
Windows update agent version:   7.9.9600.17489 (WU Agent is OK)
    Windows Update Agent configuration settings
      Automatic Update:    Enabled
Options:  Automatically download and notify of installation
Use WSUS Server: Not found (There is no such key)
Windows Update Server:  Not found (There is no such key)
Windows Update Status Server:  Not found (There is no such key)
WSUS URLs are identical:  Values are empty
WSUS Server Connectivity -- Connectivity check is impossible
    So, my questions are:
What tool do I use to configure the client machine?
How do I get WSUS to update my clients?
    Thanks
    Sam

    Steven,
I'm pretty sure that this is not the right forum to discuss this in but just so we can close this case.
On my computer I ran the command gpupdate /force I
then rebooted my computer to make sure that the group policy would be updated. The first screen shot is from my domain controller and the second is from my computer. As you can see the Domain Controller has the correct settings but the local machine doesn't.
Other parts of the DC GPO settings have worked so I'm somewhat comfortable that it is being propagated properly.

  • '"Connection Failed" : The server "rrnas01" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again' message

'"Connection Failed" : The server "rrnas01" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again' message keeps displaying whenever I try to open any Adobe CS5 applications (except for Adobe Acrobat Pro). It displays until I click "OK" about 15-20 times or so and then will finally let my program open.
I have tried deleting files within my Library/Preferences folder and turning off/deleting login items within my system preferences as other forums suggested but nothing happened. Spending 3.5 hours on the phone with Adobe and completely uninstalling and then reinstalling the entire CS5 Master Collection didn't work either.
Also, it may be helpful to know that my programs worked fine for about three weeks then when we got internet and changed the password (the join, not the adminstrative password) with the wireless network "ScubaSteve" (which I've used with no problems at my old apartment) it started acting up. I have never seen "rrnas01" before so I don't know at all where it came from. I also installed the free 30 day trial of Suitcase Fusion 3 recently, but thinking that could also be the cause I have uninstalled it, and still no help.
Please help me! And please keep in mind I don't know all the computer lingo that a lot of the people in these forums seem to know. Thanks in advance for ny help you can give me.

It may not be possible .. there is a major bug between Mountain Lion and the TC where the TC disk goes off the radar of the computer.
Lion is also affected but not as badly.
7.6.4 seems worse than earlier firmware.. so back to 7.6.1 or 7.5.2 if that is possible.
Obviously that is not a solution for a later Gen5 TC.
Reset to factory after the firmware downgrade. .use all network names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
If the TC is the main router set the dhcp to a very short lease time.. eg 30min.. and see how it goes, or try a longer lease like 99days.
I prefer the very short lease but response has been mixed.
Use ethernet not wireless.. ethernet is always more reliable and stable than wireless.
And last .. a nightly electric timer that powers off every night at midnight for 1min.. would not be the first device we have suggested a fix that amounts to beat the unit to the punch by forcing it to reboot since it is unstable.

    Hi ican,
I was looking at your VI's but I cannot seem to pinpoint exactly where you are using Windows Media Player.  In order to more quickly assist you, could you please recreate this issue more concisely in a smaller set of VIs.  Also, were you able to get sound when you did not use the TCP/IP connection and simply played the files in LabVIEW?
I noticed in a few places that you were using the Play Sound File.VI from the Graphics and Sounds palette.  Is that what you are refering to?  I noticed there that the file path that you have designated for the song is simply the song title.  Instead, this should be a path to where the song is located on your computer.
Also, if you are planning on using Windows Media Player, have you considered using the ActiveX commands for Windows Media Player?  Here are a few examples if you are unfamiliar with this functionality.
    Example 1 and Example 2.
    I hope this helps!

  • MultiThreaded Server and Client connections query.

I have written a MultiThreaded Server to accept incoming client requests.
Multiple clients can connnect to this server and have a conversation.
I invoke the 'MultiServer' from the command line and then invoke 3 clients
    from the command line.('Client').
    c:> java MultiServer
    c:> java Client
    c:> java Client
    c:> java Client
All the 3 clients now run in their own thread and send messages
    to the server.
The problem I am facing is this:
When client1 connects to the server and sends a message to the server (with the server responding)
it works fine. Both Server and Client can exchange messages.
When client2 connects to the server and sends a message and when the server
responds with a message, the message does NOT go to client2,but goes to Client1
As Clients have their own thread to run, shouldnt the messages also be delivered to
    individual clients

Taking standard input for multiple threads from one console is quite unpredictable. I think the first client thread is waiting for input when you connect the second. You type something into your server window and since the first thread was waiting for input, it takes the input and sends it to client 1.

That is because that Firefox 3.6.x version has been released later than the Firefox 4 version.
If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • Connection Failed: The server "name" may not exist or it is unavailable...

So I think I know what caused this problem, but I can't figure out how to make it stop...
When I go to print, if I try to click on the pop-up to change the default printer setting, there's a LONG delay, then I get a dialog that says:
    Connection Failed
The server "name" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, then try again.
Then there's another delay and I get the message a second time. I can then select any of my printer settings and print fine, it's just an annoying delay if I click on that pop-up accidentally or need to change it.
I have a new iMac and I migrated from my old G5. The "name" of the server it is seeking is my old G5, so that must be in the settings somewhere, but I can't find it. I tried going into the Print & Fax settings in System Preferences, deleting the printer there, and then re-adding, but that didn't clear it up.
Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Hmm, well, this stopped working again for me. I tried swapping ethernet and re-installing the Airport client update - to no avail. I could always see my Mac shares from PCs though. However, I have (for now) managed to connect to the PC using ip address rather than name even though finder quite clearly sees the name. Does your printer connection work by ip rather than name ? I'm going to play name lookup detective for a bit now - it's some kind of Netbios name lookup issue I guess as I've no local DNS service. resolv.conf is apparently not used so a bit of learning to do! ...
... nmblookup seems to work but nslookup doesn't. Looks like SL connect via Finder isn't using nmblookup properly and I can't see how to make that work. When this gets reported enough it should get a publicised work-round or a fix. If only I can get dig/nslookup to slave out to nmblookup ...must be something I can configure for that ??

  • Connection failed - The server "name" mayt not exist or it is unavailable..

I've been connecting my 24" iMac with my 15" MacBookPro either over the WiFi or via Ethernet for months to share hard drive space & to save time transfering files constantly.
But now, all of a sudden, I'm getting the following error message:
    +*Connection Failed*+
+The Server "MacBookProName" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.+
After this, I succeded in being able to connect via Share Screen and via Web Sharing. It is only not working when I access through finder. Also, it's not letting me click on "Connect As..." so I can't check if it's entering the correct info too.
Both Macs are 10.6.6 and both have software fully updated.
    Help!?

Fixed.. Was firewall settings on the MacBookPro

  • Force CORBA server and client to localhost

    Hi,
i have to run an omg corba server and client via orbd on a single machine with win xp. The machine is connected to the network, but this is not relevant for the corba communication.
I can now force the orbd to start at localhost. After starting server and client everything works well until disconnecting machine from network, because client and server are started at ip of network card.
How can i force the client and server to use a localhost port for corba communication (client and server)?
    Hope anyone has an idea...

P.S.: If I start the applications after disconnecting network everthing works.

    Resolved the problem myself.
The correct property is a java system property:
    com.sun.CORBA.ORBServerHost=localhost
If you set this property in your application before instanciating an ORB, the orb will be forced to run on the set value (in this case localhost). If you do not set this property the ORB will be started at the IP of your network card if it is active (connected to the network)...

  • How can a VI be both server and client?

    Hi,
I'm new in LabView and I'm trying to build a server and client VI using TCP/IP that runs in two computers. in my program I need both server and client VIs to communicate with each other which means I need both VIs to be server and client. I've tried using a case structure but it doesnt work. The only thing I achieved is a normal server/client system where the server sends a request and the client responses. But i need the client to send requests too.i have attached my VIs to this post.I would appriciate it if someone could help with this problem.
    Thanks in advanced.

Do you really need a client and server on each PC? If you simply need that two to talk to each other they can once the client connects to the server. In most cases you only need one server.
What Steve said about the not using the same port only applies to two servers on the same machine. A client must use the port the server is listening to and if the client and the server are on the same machine then they will both use the same port. However, only ONE of them is accepting waiting for connections on that port.
In the code you posted you actually swapped the names. What you call the client is actually the server code and vise versa. In networking a server is an application that listens to an assigned port, accepts connections on that port and provides whatever services it has implemented. A client is an application that establishs a connection to a server. Once a connection is established the two applications can communicate in both directions. The applications themselves will define how the conversation should progress and whether it is a one way conversation or a two way conversation. You don't specify what you are trying to accomplish but I suspect you only need a single server.
In TCP, every connection is defined by the source and destination IP addresses and the source and destination ports. The server uses a known port (FTP is port 21, HTTP is 80, telnet is 23, or some custom port in the user space beyonds the reserved ports) to listen for connections. The client will use the well known port of teh server and generally picks a random port for its port number. The LabVIEW VIs do this automatically. This is how a server and a client on the same computer can use the same port number. Two servers however cannot. The server application can spawn a child task allowing it to service multiple connections at one time though. Each connection will be unique though since the client's port number, address or both will change for each connection.
    OK, end of networking 101.
Can you describe in a bit more detail what exactly you want to accomplish. Given that I could probably provide you with more information for your application.
