Considering Arch For My New Home Server

My wife and I both use Arch full time on our desktop and two laptops, and we enjoy it a lot. Right now our current home server also runs Arch and works very reliably. In fact I don't think I ever had a problem with it. The server we use has some major hardware on it that would probably make it better off as a standard desktop and not a server (it has a great video card, for example) so I decided to buy or build a new server to replace it. (The current server is over four years old). The server will be responsible for SSH, Unison, DNS, and Samba.
I have decided to have three hard drives. One will be dedicated to the root and swap partitions. The other two will be dedicated to /home and will be on a software RAID1. The reason for this is because redundancy on the OS is not important to me (a Clonezilla image that I'll have stored will quickly restore the OS if I ever need to recover it) but redundancy on the data is really important since it will house all of our media (over 500GB worth). I have an offsite backup too so that's not an issue either. Also notable is the fact that the server will not have any GUI at all. Just the kernel and whatever is required to facilitate what it serves.
Anyway, here is where I'm wondering if Arch is still a good choice. My current server uses Arch and works 100% reliably, but is also not on any form of RAID either. Considering how often Arch changes, I fear that maybe an update would come along that would break the RAID, and that's the last thing I want to have happen. How reliable is Arch on a server from a RAID standpoint? I am also considering Debian, however, Debian packages rarely match the versions of our computers (especially Unison) so I don't think Debian serving an almost primarily Arch Linux household would work well.

That's well and good until 12 months later when you decide you want to install new package X, which depends on lib A, which means lib A has to be updated, but packages Y, Z, R, T,W,Q and V all need to be updated because they also depend on lib A and you end up with a big borked box.
Yes, experience has learnt me that
There's always ArchServer (Full Disclosure: I'm the project coordinator )

    Hi,
Did you use the generic installer or the win32 one ? You should use the former with Win64.
You can also check that your version of Java is supported in the certification matrix.

  • Users and permissions for a small home server

    Hello community,
I have been using Linux on the desktop for many years now, but unfortunately my knowledge about servers is very limited, almost non-existent. Therefore my question is most probably equally well fitting here and into the newbie corner.
I'm trying to set up a little home server which should be in charge of following tasks:
    - CUPS print server in the local network
    - access to shared files through NFS in the local network
    - backup (again over NFS)
    - an Owncloud server
    - maybe a mail server in the long run (NSA, paranoia, etc. )
For now I have set up the print server, the NFS server and was working on the Owncloud installation, when Owncloud gave me some errors with users and permissions. So I was led to the idea of rethinking the users and permissions on server. So far there is only the root user who may do everything. This seems like a quite unsafe configuration. I'd like to make it safer. First, the printer, the backup and the locally shared files should be accessible from the local network only. SSH access should also be accessible locally only. The Owncloud file folder should be accessible from the internet, but of course only for the Owncloud users registered to the Owncloud server.
What is the best way to set up users and permissions for such a set up?
    Thanks for any hints,
    PhotonX

Hi, i think it depends who are you serving for, if you are just serving for a small office or home server or a big organization. The following quick thinking just came to me:
I think cups set automatically a system  user of its own, and runs as it, so no trouble there. Cups also has the option to set users and it uses the system users as default, i think it depends in in how many printers/users your have in your server.Users that can manage cups are in the lp group.
For nfs every user should have their home, samba is also a good option if you have  windows computer in your network and it integrates better with graphical file  managers like nautilus in the clients side, but it is a hassle to configure.
You should run the web server (owncloud ) as it own user, maybe you can manage to set something up for owncloud in the filesystem, but owncloud uses a database, and the users for owncloud are stored in there, and they are not system users.
You can configure ssh for local use only enabling the corresponding subnets in your /etc/sshd.conf and optionally but recommended you can set a firewall and permissions. You can use iptables but i prefer ufw for simple setup.
I think you should read the wiki:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/users_and_groups
and the other respective topics in the wiki.
Also as an advice i know that arch linux is a great distribution, but you have to do more work to mantain a stable server. I would recommend debian or another more conservative distro, but of course it is your choice.

  • Clear OS for an integrated home server?

Ran across this reading around the internet.
    http://www.clearfoundation.com/
Was wondering if anyone has used it before and their thoughts about it.
It seems like an interesting turn-key-ish solution to having an integrated home server that managed email, file sharing, webhosting in house with both linux/windows machines.
Prior to finding this I was looking at things like:
    FreeNAS
    Amahi
    OpenFiler
and then adding the extra functionality that I wanted like webhosting, email serving, etc.
Note: There is thread from 2 months ago, but it was focused on business usage, and at the time no one seems to have tried this out.

I do agree that given a well designed distribution, working knowledge of how to achieve desired functionality, and a reserve of free time the end product would be more desirable than a prefab solution.
However I am deficient in two of those areas:
    Experience
    Time
Both of these delimit the progress of each other sadly. Leading to sad state where "what I want to do takes more time to learn than I have to accomplish what I set out towards".
Therefore while I learn, I have to look towards something good enough to stand-in for what I want in the interim.
However, the exercise of looking for stop gap measure itself can be vexing since I have to balance how much to spend looking for half measure than progressing on making it myself.
(this is what happens when I start posting after watching ghost in the shell, long monologues that don't say much but waste a fair amount time in the process thus creating an illusory feeling that something of value should have been present)

  • Screen Share for Brand New Mini Server

    Hello all,
just unpacked the brand new Mac Mini Server and don't know what to do. We all work on laptops in my studio so have no keyboards to use with the thing. I haven't turned it on yet, but is there a way to immediately go into remote screen sharing so I can configure it etc? Thanks for any tips that keep me from having to go dig up a keyboard!

    Hi
Do you see an option to Screen Share on a client mac?
With the MacMini there should be two disks. One of them is for installing the Server Administration applications. Install these on a client mac - must be 10.6. Once installed launch Server Admin. Switch on your MacMini and connect it to the network. Good idea to have DHCP running somewhere. Presumably whatever you're using for your Router/Firewall? Make a note of the MacMini's Serial Number (first 8 characters) Launch Server Admin and dismiss the authentication prompt. Select "Set Up Remote Server" from the Server Admin Menu.
It should be fairly obvious from there - hopefully?

  • How can I know how many processors do I need for a new SQL Server machine?

My company intend to buy a new server and will dedicate that for SQL Server which will serve an in-house developed application.
How can we know how many processors are enough to buy?
I know that each SQL Server edition and version has it's different limitation of the number of processors it can support, for example SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition can support up to 4 sockets or 16 cores per SQL Server Instance, but this does not mean
that I have to buy 4 physical CPUs. two could be enough. how can I know?

I recently bought a new MacBook laptop. I downloaded iTunes and want to set it up as my "home computer", but it has already been set up with my old laptop. How to I change the home computer to my new MacBook, without loosing my music, games, data, etc., so that I can download music and things from my new computer. • Appliances for new home...Should I wait for "Black Friday" price discounts?

I will be making a big purchase of 3-4 large kitchen appliances for my new home, but I am concerned about the upcoming "Black Friday" price discounts. I need to buy my appliances this weekend, and I cannot wait for anticipated price discounts. If I purchase now, and then the price is discounted later on, will I be eligible for the new discounted price?

    Hello SD-BaLLaH -
Congratulations on your new home!  While normally you are able to do a thirty day price match guarantee on Appliances, our Thanksgiving weekend sales are exempt from price matching.  This would include trying to obtain a price match on a previous purchase.
I hope this offers some clarity!

  • SSD for new Mini Server?

    Hi, guys!
    First time poster here
I would like to know your opinion on the following:
I am planning to go for a new Mini Server and run it in pair with an external Thunderbolt RAID storage. All shared data will be stored on the external RAID, while the internal Mini's disk will be used for running OS, storing account data and running basic services like File Sharing, Print Sharing and VPN. The question is: will I benefit from replacing the default 7200 HDDs with an SSD?
Of course, the machine will start faster and generally run smoother, but I don't really care about that as I will hardly ever see its interface after the setup is done. I am interested in whether SSD will contribute to increasing speed when my users will access their data (stored on the external RAID)? The access chain is as follows: Client computer - LAN - Mini Server (with HDD or SSD) - Thunderbolt connection - RAID.
Another question that bothers me is redundancy, of course. With 2 HDDs I would make a RAID 1 massive to provide for user account data redundancy. To achieve the same goal with SSD I would need to add a second one, which is getting quite expensive, frankly speaking But this is a completely different issue, I guess.
    Would greatly appreciate any feedback.

I'm unsure of the proper procedure as I'm not experienced dealing with Fusion Drive setups. If Disk Utility shows you have a 1.5 TB drive, then what do you see when you boot the computer and check disk drive space using Get Info? I know you can revert the volume you have back to standard format if you don't mind using the Terminal in your Utilities folder:
Open the Terminal and paste or enter the following at the prompt:
    diskutil list
Press RETURN. This will list for you the device information for your HDD. Here is an example of the output:
    /dev/disk1
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *120.0 GB   disk1
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk1s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Yosemite                119.2 GB   disk1s2
       3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk1s3
You want what you see at the top left - /dev/diskn, where n is the integer number. Then enter or paste at the prompt:
sudo diskutil cs revert /dev/diskn ; replace the n with the integer number found above.
Press RETURN and enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the screen, so be careful typing. Press RETURN again. Wait until it completes the process which is when the prompt returns.
Given the potential danger when using the Terminal in this way, please be sure you have first made a reliable backup. Better safe than sorry.

  • Fresh Home Server, Mac Mini 2014 or older?

    Hello Again,
I read all discussions dot apple dot com server posts title since friday's announcements on ac Mini and searched too on top of web searching reviews, but I wanted to hear from you gals and guys.
I do not do Big Photos or Movie professionally, just Apple Deployment of carts, apps and books.
I want a Mac Mini to mostly practice Yosemite Server and some newer devices.
For a simple Home Server with only few devices, would it be better to get the previous refurbed Mac Mini and throw on Server 4.0?
    A short why is welcomed.
    Merci,
    Francois.

Server really doesn't put much of a load on the machine.  I have it running on a Mini from 2010, and it's working just fine.  You could get a refurb and it'll do the job.
Most of Server's features are low demand on RAM and CPU.  Networking is where it feels the most strain if you are moving a lot of files or using it as a proxy.  If you're just using file services, Xcode, DNS, and Mail, a Core2Duo with 4GB RAM can easily handle the load.

  • Recently decomissioned old SCCM 2007 server and replaced with 2012 R2- How do I point everything to the new SCCM server?

I've tried many things that I've found in articles. Gone as far as ADSI edit. Not sure what else I can do. The old server was setup by someone else and never really worked correctly. I'd basically like to start fresh with this new install.
    Thanks
    James A+, Network+, MCP

Follow my R2 install guide to get your site up.
    http://sccmentor.wordpress.com/2014/01/08/sccm-2012-r2-step-by-step-installation-guide/
You won't need to extend the schema if this has already been done for the 2k7 site. The System Management container could already exist. If so add in permissions for the new site server. If not create and follow the guide. Once done set up your boundaries
and discovery methods accordingly. Once you start to populate the console with clients then installing the client will remove the old 2k7 client (if it was installed) as part of the 2012 client install.

  • New VM Server - Very Slow Performance with QuickBooks

    Hello all,
    Oh the dreaded performance issues!
Okay we currently have a virtual server hosted with a different company - it has two VPU's and 8GB RAM.  The contract is about to expire so we're switching to a Microsoft Azure VM.  This server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 - main purpose is
to host QuickBooks Enterprise v15 - with 10 users connecting via RemoteApp and/or RD.
So for the new Azure server we selected the A3 (4 cores/7GB RAM) option - running Windows Server 2008 R2 - I know old O/S - but still need for now.  We also attached a new 250GB disk for additional storage of data/programs.  The test users noticed
performance issues right away so we temporarily upgraded it to the A4 option (8 cores/14GB RAM) and although it is better there are still performance issues.  For example to run a statement report in QuickBooks - viewing both connections side-by-side
    - it is 2x faster on the current "live" server we have hosted with the current hosting provider.  On the Azure VM we also tested installing QuickBooks on the C:\ drive and then on the attached 250GB disk - the F:\ drive - same performance results
    on both.
This is a new VM...fresh install....just so strange why it would be slower than the 8GB server.
Does anyone have any ideas on where we can start to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks so much!

I understand the performance seen by end users are low. However, do you know what is really wrong? Do you see Azure VM using almost 80% of CPU & RAM, if not adding more RAM & CPU may not really help you.
    - How is the CPU usage of your on-premise node vs Azure VM
    - How is the memory usage of your on-premise node vs Azure VM
Do you have any specific characteristics for Disk IO requirement? Can you check IOPS on on-premise vs Azure?
