Content of database incorrect using setString

Question

The following code:

Nothing looks wrong (although casting i to "int" in the setInt()call is weird and unneeded).
Off-the-top-of-my-head theories:
1. mismatch between the driver version and the database version
2. bug in driver/db handling short Strings destined for a CHAR field. CHAR is a fixed-length data-type and either the DB or the driver has to blank-pad the value when you send the DB a value shorter than the specified length. To avoid that extra work, and the extra storeage taken up by blank padding, most people use the VARCHAR type instead, and only use CHAR for fields that are almost always fully filled, such as CHAR(1) for a column that will ony hold "Y"/"N"...
