Context Cartridge for Oracle 8.0

Would someone please recommend a good source for design and
development with the Oracle Context Cartridge for Oracle 8. Our
pharamaceutical company requires access to text based documents
and key word in context searches through a web enabled
application suite. Does anyone know of any Oracle courses in
this area?
Thanks for the effort...

The Oracle8 Context Cartridge Quickstart guide is the best source
to get acquainted with the Context option. You can search and
download this doc from the support site or email me if you have
any questions.

    I need some help with tuning Context Text queries a SQL query.
    My query is of the format:
    SELECT /*+ ORDERED USE_NL(T1) */ distinct T1.column4,sum(SCORE(10))
    FROM Table1 T1, Table2 T2
    WHERE T1.column_with_bit_map_index = 1 AND -- column is either 1 or 0
    T1.column2_with_regular_index=2 AND
    T2.column3_with_regular_index= T1.column3
    AND CONTAINS(T2.LONG_Column1,'{a_frequently_occurring_word}',10)>0
    GROUP BY T1.column4
    ORDER BY 1 DESC
    T1 has 600,000 rows, T2 has 100,000 rows.
    My query takes 14 seconds if the CONTAINS clause is looking for a_frequently_occurring_word. If the CONTAINS cluase looks instead for a_rarely_occurring_word, the query response time is 4 seconds!
    If I remove the CONTAINS clause, the query comes back in 4 seconds, which leads me to believ the best performance gain wil come from tuning the Context part of the query, not the regular SQL part of the query.
    I followed the Context doc and attempted to tune Context as follows:
    1. Created 20 QDML servers using ctxsys
    2. Created a policy and index (CONTEXT_index1) for T2.LONG_Column1
    3. Used exec. ctx_ddl.optimize_index('CONTEXT_index1',ctx_ddl.defragment_to_new_table);
    4. Used exec ctx_adm.set_query_buffer_size(1000000);
    There was no improvement in the query response time, i.e. it was still 14 seconds.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    First, export should not be a primary method of backing up a database. At most, exports should compliment a physical backup process. There are a variety of ways to handle incremental backups when you are doing physical backups.
    Second, there is no useful way to do an incremental export. Later versions of export (I don't think 8.0.6 had this) have a "incremental" option, but that will export all the rows of a table if any row changes or is added to the table since the last incremental export. For 99.9% of the people out there, this renders the option practically useless.

  • Free text retrieval with Context Cartridge

    I am wondering whether it would a problem to create a Java
    application doing free text retrieval via Context Cartridge.
    I mean by that :
    1. JDBC call via thin Oracle driver with CONTAINS in WHERE
    clause. Is it supposed to work ?
    2. Assuming we have several hits in a BLOB can we provide
    functionality ( next hit prev hit ) in textarea field for Java
    frame.

    This one was forwarded to JDBC experts. Two experts (A and B)
    replied. Their answers are below.

    A. YES.
    B. There is no limitation in JDBC of using CONTAINS in WHERE
    clause.
    2. Assuming we have several hits in a BLOB can we provide
    functionality ( next hit prev hit ) in textarea field for Java
    frame.
    A. I don't really get what you mean. If you mean that you want to
    map a Java Frame to a BLOB column and depending upon the hit in
    the Java frame, you want to read the data from a certain position
    (offset), then yes. If you are using 8.0.X drivers, you can use
    the dbms_lob.read call. If you are using 8.1.X drivers, you can
    use Blob.getBytes call.
    B. It can be achieved by creating a wrapper of using the
    following method in oracle.sql.BLOB in 8.1 driver.
    public long position(byte[] pattern,
    long start)
    throws SQLException
    Determines the byte position at which the specified byte pattern
    begins within the BLOB value that this Blob object represents.
    Begin search at position start. Parameters:
    pattern - the byte array for which to search
    start - the position at which to begin searching; the first
    position is 1
    Returns: the position at which the pattern appears, else -1.
    Throws: SQLException - if there is an error accessing the BLOB

    Hi,
    I just had this messages yesterday during my install.
    You have to update those 2 files:
    <RCU Home>\rcu\integration\ipm\sql\createtables_ipm_sqlserver.sql
    <RCU Home>\rcu\integration\ipm\sql\createuser_ipm_sqlserver.sql
    The first 2 lines begin with "Rem ..." which is not correct for SQL Server : I added "--" and it worked.

    Hi Airings,
    'ORA-00942: table or view does not exist'
    According to the error message, it seems that the migrating table or view does not exist in the database, or SSMA does not have access to it. To troubleshoot the issue, please check the following things.
     1. Verify that if the spelling of the table or view name is correct.
     2. If the table or view exists but is in a different schema from the current schema where the SQL is executing (in other word, the table doesn’t own by you, but owned by other user), the ORA-00942 error will return too. Resolve this by
    explicitly reference the table or view by specifying the schema name (schema_name.table_name).
    3. SSMA queries some additional catalog tables that you may not have permission to, please make sure that you grant the account permission to
     read sys.mlog$. For more details, please review this similar thread:

  • Using JNDI Provider for Oracle JMS Queue

    Hello,
    I created a JMS Queue in Oracle 9.2.0.1 and would like
    a Java client to receive events from the Queue. I am
    not running Oracle9iAS. I have access to WebLogic server
    7.0 which is also a JNDI provider. Is there a sample code
    that shows the steps on how to go about this.
    thanks very much for any pointers.

    To define an Enterprise Message Source for AS JMS and OJMS in BAM, see Chapter 3 in the BAM Architect's User Guide.
    Specifying Settings for Oracle (AS JMS and OJMS)
    Settings for Oracle (AS JMS and OJMS) include:
    ■ Initial Context Factory.
    For 10.1.3: oracle.j2ee.rmi.RMIInitialContextFactory
    For 10.1.2: com.evermind.server.rmi.RMIInitialContextFactory
    ■ JNDI Service Provider URL. For standalone use oc4j: ormi://machine_name/
    where machine_name is the OC4J installed host, and for production use Application Server: opmn:ormi://<machine_name>:<opmn request port>:home where machine_name is the application server installed host, opmn request port could be found from looking at opmn.xml in <App server install location>/opmn/conf
    ■ TopicConnectionFactory Name.
    java:comp/resource/BAMTTT/TopicConnectionFactories/bam_ttq_tab
    ■ Topic Name. java:comp/resource/BAMTTT/Topics/bam_ttq
    ■ JMS Message Type. TextMessage.
    ■ Durable Subscriber Name. BAMFilteredSubscription
    ■ Message Selector. Message selector, for example, BAMFilter='true'
    ■ Client ID. ClientID

  • Parameters maintenance for Oracle 10.2.0.4 on Solaris 10 zone

    Hi!
    We use SAP Solution Manager 7.0 on Solaris 10 Zone with Oracle.
    We have updated Oracle from 10.2.0.2 to 10.2.0.4.
    What are the parameter recommendation for Oracle 10.2.4?
    What is the approach to do this?
    Thank you very much!
    regards
    Thom

    > Does the SAP installation usually include the setup of oracle parameters?
    partly.
    > Is there some automatic report that check and set up the valeus to the rigtht values, e.g. according to SAP note 830576?
    No. Many of those parameters (the events mainly) depend on specific patches that need to be installed to activate them. Did you apply all the interim patches for 10.2.0.4 or just that patch?
    > What are the crucial/important parameters?
    all of them are more or less important. Oracle is a complex beast.
    > If not, what are the technical steps to do this manually?
    You can use brtools to change them one by one - or write a script like the following. However, this implies that all single/interim/cumulative patches are installed, not only 10.2.0.4.
    Check note 1137346 - Oracle Database 10g: Patches for Release 10.2.0.4 for the single patches and read all the linked notes to the patches so you can built your own script to set the parameters.
    This is an example script for HP-UX but you could use a likewise one for Solaris:

  • Advanced Development Techniques for Oracle Portal Components

    Hello friends,
    I have the following problem. I have a report and a form (on a
    view) in the same page, and when I select an item of the report
    the form is refreshed with the values associated to the selected
    item. The problem is that it makes it with delay, the first
    selection doesn't show anything and the remaining sample the
    data of the previous selection.
    This application has been developed as Ken Atkins explains in
    its document "Advanced Development Techniques for Oracle Portal
    Components."
    Oracle Portal Version: 3.0.9.8.0
    Thanks in advance.
    This is my code:
    -- REPORT --
    SELECT '<A HREF="http://mipc/portal30/
    ALFONSO.refrescar_contenido?
    p_variable=nombre_preferencia&p_variable_valor='||nombre_preferen

    v_nombre VARCHAR2(40);
    BEGIN
    v_Session := portal30.wwsto_api_session.load_session
    ('CONTEXT','SESS_EMP');
    v_nombre := v_Session.get_attribute_as_varchar2
    ('nombre_preferencia');
    IF v_nombre IS NOT NULL THEN
    BEGIN
         SELECT rowidtochar(rowid) INTO v_RowID
         FROM ALFONSO.VISTAPREFERENCIAS
         WHERE nombre_preferencia = v_nombre;
    -- VISTAPREFERENCIAS it is the view in which the form is
    based.
    END;
    -- Tell the component that the query is coming from a link,
    and that the rowid
    -- is being used to query the correct context record.
    p_session.set_value (p_block_name=>'DEFAULT',
    p_attribute_name=>'_CALLED_FROM_LINK'
                   ,p_value=>'ROWID');
    -- Pass the rowid of the context record to query.
    p_session.set_value (p_block_name=>'DEFAULT',
    p_attribute_name=> '_ROWID'
                   ,p_value=> v_RowID);
    -- Now do the actual query, using the query button
    processing in the target module
    portal30.wwa_api_module_event.do_event
    ('DEFAULT','QUERY_TOP',1,'ON_CLICK',True,'',p_session);
    -- Save the session information, which includes the
    p_session.save_session;
    END IF;
    END;
    /

    You can make the report with a procedure from which you may call to a form by means of a link. It is a possibility, no??
    It is better a example:

         htp.p('</HEAD>');
         htp.p('<BODY>');
              sentencia := 'SELECT rowidtochar(rowid), campo1, campo2 FROM A';
              DBMS_SQL.PARSE(v_cursor,sentencia,DBMS_SQL.V7);
              DBMS_SQL.DEFINE_COLUMN(v_cursor,1,rowid_pref,18);

              DBMS_SQL.DEFINE_COLUMN(v_cursor,3,v_campo2,20);
              vnumfilas := DBMS_SQL.EXECUTE(v_cursor);
              LOOP

  • Setting Application Context Attributes for Enterprise Users Based on Roles

    Hello,
    We have an Oracle 11g database with a table containing data from multiple sites (a SiteID field identifies the site for a record). Since application users can have access to different subsets of sites, we would like to use Oracle's Virtual Private Database feature to enforce row-level security on the table.
    I did a successful proof-of-concept with database users. I created a role for each site (example: USER_SITE_A, USER_SITE_B, ...), and then assigned the appropriate site roles to each database user. I then created a package (run via a logon trigger) which set application context attributes for each site. If the current database user has been assigned a role for a given site, then the corresponding attribute named "SITE_PRIVILEGE_SiteID" is set to 'Y'... otherwise, it is set to 'N'. Here is the code which worked to set application context attributes for database users:
    -- For each record in my RoleSitePrivileges table, set
    --   an attribute named 'SITE_PRIVILEGE_<SiteID>'.
    --   If the current user has been assigned a role matching
    --   the value in the 'RoleName' field, set the corresponding
    --   attribute to 'Y'... otherwise, set it to 'N'.
    FOR iPrivRec IN (SELECT RoleName, SiteID
                       FROM RoleSitePrivileges
                       ORDER BY SiteID)
       LOOP
          SELECT COUNT(*)
            INTO roleExists
            FROM dba_role_privs
            WHERE granted_role = UPPER(iPrivRec.RoleName)
              AND grantee = USER;
          IF roleExists > 0 THEN
             DBMS_SESSION.set_context(
                         namespace   => 'my_ctx',
                         attribute   => 'SITE_PRIVILEGE_' || iPrivRec.SiteID,
                         value       => 'Y');
          ELSE
             DBMS_SESSION.set_context(
                         namespace   => 'my_ctx',
                         attribute   => 'SITE_PRIVILEGE_' || iPrivRec.SiteID,
                         value       => 'N');
          END IF;
       END LOOP;To finish things off, I created a security policy function for the table which returns the following:
    RETURN 'SiteID IN (SELECT TO_NUMBER(SUBSTR(attribute, 15))
                         FROM session_context
                         WHERE attribute LIKE ''SITE_PRIVILEGE_%''
                            AND value = ''Y'')';This setup worked great for database users. I am now working to do a comparable proof-of-concept for enterprise users created in Oracle Internet Directory (OiD). I have Enterprise User Security (EUS) up and running with OiD, global roles created in the database, enterprise roles defined in EUS with global role assignments, and enterprise roles assigned to OiD users. The enterprise users are able to successfully login to the database, and I can see the appropriate global role assignments when I query the session_roles view.
    I tried using the same application context package, logon trigger, and security policy function with the enterprise users that I had used with the database users. Unfortunately, I found that the application context attributes are not being set correctly. As you can see from the code above, the applicaiton context package was referencing the dba_role_privs view. Apparently, although this view is populated for database users, it is not populated for enterprise users.
    I tried changing the application context package to use invoker's rights and to query the session_roles view instead of the dba_role_privs view. Although this package sets the attributes correctly when called manually, it does not work when called from the logon trigger. That was an oops on my part, as I didn't realize initially that a PL/SQL procedure cannot be called with invoker's rights from a trigger.
    So, I am now wondering, is there another view that I could use in code called from a logon trigger to access the roles assigned to the enterprise user ? If not, is there a better way for me to approach this problem? From a maintenance standpoint, I like the idea of controlling site access from the LDAP directory service via role assignments. But, I am open to other ideas as well.
    Thank you!

    Thank you!

  • Context menu for tree node cannot be accessed in IE 8 (Jdev 11.1.2)

    We use an af:tree with context menus for performing operations on each node. In IE 8 when you hover over a node before right clicking, "tooltip" text appears which basically just re-displays the text of the node. Even though the tooltip text is annoying, the context menu worked fine in 11.1.1.4, but now in 11.1.2 when you right-click on that tooltip text you get the "normal" browser context menu for text -- we no longer get our custom context menu.
    You can see this same problem on the tree in the rich faces demo: http://jdevadf.oracle.com/adf-richclient-demo/
    Sometimes, if you're quick enough, you can get the custom context menu to work, but it seems that once you've hovered long enough over one node to get the standard context menu, you're stuck and any node you click on will display the browser's normal context menu.
    This is a big problem for us because we rely on these context menus and most of our administrative users are on IE 8. Is there a workaround or can the tooltip text somehow be shut off? It doesn't appear in Firefox so Firefox works fine.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    if this works on IE 7 you can force the app to run in IE7 compatibility mode
    See "Run ADF Faces applications with IE 9 in IE 8 compatibility mode" http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/april2011-otn-harvest-367335.pdf
    Works the same for IE8 to IE7. This then gives you a solution for until the issue is solved
    Btw.: If users click onto the folder icon (not the text, which brings up the tool tip) then the context menu work. I'll file a bug anyway

    I should probably explain how to use Application
    icons in iWeb as graphics as well in case someone
    checking this thread later doesn't know.
    Context-click on one of the icons and do a "Get Info"
    (Command-I). At the top of that window next to the
    icon's name will be an image of the icon. Click on
    that image to highlight it and do a "Copy"
    (Command-C). Now, what we need is some application
    that will allow us to pass this graphical data
    thru it in order to get it saved with a unique
    file name... Well, what do you know, Preview can
    handle it just fine!
    Open Preview, Command-N and... you don't want to save
    just yet. Click on the "Drawer" icon. Clicking that
    disclosure triangle, you'll see this one icon is
    really a series of images. No matter, just choose the
    one named "Labeled Image 1" (or whatever the first
    one is) Copy, Command-N and NOW you'll only have the
    one image that you'll need (the highest quality
    one).
    Save that one with a unique name and now you're ready
    to drop into iWeb (or any other app) and have fun
    with it!
    Kyn and Jabberwock--
    I am a little lost here. This thread began about black buttons, which caught my eye, and then it became this, which has also caught my eye! But first, what is the reason behind what Kyn is explaining how to do? In what circumstance would a person want to insert an application icon? I have come far enough to know that just because I don't see the purpose for something doesn't mean that a purpose does not exist!
