Continue working while RAID-1 rebuilds?

I've just had to rebuild a RAID-1 set on my Xserve (running 10.3 — upgrading to 10.5 soon as this is done) and I'm wondering if anyone can confirm for me 100% that it's OK to continue working on the server while the RAID-1 set rebuilds (as it's an ETA of 5+ hours for the rebuild and people need to keep working)?

Do you mind if I give you some further advice?

Don't do it. Start with a fresh/clean install. Choose Advanced. Don't configure anything using the Server Setup Assistant apart from the network details. When prompted for DNS name and hostname, consider this bit carefully. What you decide at that point will have a major impact afterwards. If you have a registered domain - use that. Although you may not be interested in external access at this time, you may be in the future?
It sounds counter-intuitive but start at the end to begin at the beginning. Do you understand the distinction?
Get everything up-to-date before configuring anything: services, users, groups etc. Start with DNS. Even if all you want is AFP start with DNS. Get this bit right and you will have few problems. Don't use POSIX permissions. Stick with Access Control Lists (ACLs). Don't combine them either. Don't be tempted to apply permissions using the Finder. Don't be tempted to log in network users using any server-based admin account. Use strong passwords. Important if you want Mail Services.
Whatever you learnt with 10.3 Server is OK . . . for that time. However . . . some of it no doubt will be useful but be prepared to ditch a lot of it. Leopard Server is different in many, many ways.
Read as much of the Server Admin Manuals as you can:

Learn as much as you can about DNS and possibly LDAP. You may not want LDAP now but in the future? You will at some point have to use the command line. Get comfortable with it, as soon as possible. It may seem scary at first but if you go slowly and carefully you should be OK? Test, test and test again. Implement a clearly defined and effective back-up strategy. One that you can confidently restore from. It's not enough to just back-up. It's a waste of time/resources if the first time disaster strikes all you recover is a sack of s&*$e. Use more than one back-up device, if budget and time allows.
Consult these forums. There are some amazing people on here offering advice and assistance for free. Use them whenever possible. It's probably the best education you'll get regarding OSX Server specifically and servers, networking etc in general.
There is lots more but I think that will do for now.

  • Sharepoint list dataheet view error "Cannot connect to the server at this time. You can continue working with this list, but some data may not be available"

    I have a List which is having around 14000 items in it.while opening that list in datasheet view it is giving error .
    Below is a summary of the issue:
    After selecting datasheet view beow error occurs:
        "Cannot connect to the server at this time.  You can continue working with this list, but some data may not be available."
        "Unable to retrieve all data."
        The item counts displays say 100 out of 14000 items.
    Exporting List to excel is giving only 2000 records out of 14000 records.
    Other Observations   -  
    This is happening to only one list on the site .There are other lists in the site whose no. of records is equal to 8000 to 9000.They are working absolutely fine without any error.
    Also, If I am saving this list as a template and creating another list with it ,then it is working absolutely fine with 14000 records,so the issue does not seem to be related with no. of records as the template list is working fine.
    I have checked the Alternate access mapping setting ,its fine.
    It should not be related to lookup,datefield or any other column as the list created from it template is working fine with all these columns.
    I checked below links also ,but doesn't seem to work in my case.

    I have spent two days to resolve this issue. Microsoft has released two KBs with reference to this issue...but are not appearing in search results at the top.
    I am sharing my finding.
    1. First install the
    KB2552989 (Hopefully you might have already installed it. The KB detetcts it and informs the user.)
    2. Then update registry by adding new key for data fetch timeout as mentioned inKB2553007
    These two steps resolved the issue in our environment. Hope it might help others as well.

    Inspector > Text > More > Language
    Only applies to selected text, like making it a particular font.
    It is not a setting that sticks. If you continue to paste in text from elsewhere particularly the Internet it will have a different or None language set to it. You need to select it and make it B.E.

    I can edit on Premiere Pro 6 files, but after a dozen keystrokes, the space bar and cursor keys stop working while the save function, render workspace function, export file are still operational. How can I fix it so I may complete my assignment?
    Besides DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Suite 6 is the only software on the machine. I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Operating System on AMD FX 6100 six-Core Processor at 3.31gHz and 32 GB RAM memory. There are two SLI-bridged GTX680 NVidia cards.
    The software was very stable for the last six months, working with 720P proxy files from 2.5K masters (Blackmagic Design Camera). I am working on a feature-length project that exceeds 1000 edits. I have broken the file into 2 one hour segments.
    I have deactivated the software before reinstalling the entire OS from scratch. PP6 was very stable for 48 hours. Then the freezing space bar returns. After a dozen strokes into the project, same problem.  I have made cache files store next to originals, I have deleted preview files if they were corrupted and causing instability. Am I missing something?
    I have Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection. I double checked the memory for damage/defect. Nothing says that the motherboard or other components are damaged.
    I am in film competition overseas and need to have deliverables in less than a month's time.  I lost the last two weeks troubleshooting and this crisis came at an inopportune moment of the project.
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Still getting software freezes but found a way to mitigate for the mean time.
    Upon launching Adobe Premiere Pro, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to launch TaskManager as well.
    You will want to highlight Adobe QT32 Server.exe
    Right click and select "End Process Tree"
    You will get considerable stability in the program, long enough to get timing of cuts done. Be sure to save often.
    If the program freezes, do not hit Save. You definitely want to avoid saving the corruption into your TimeLine
    CTRL-ALT-DEL to relaunch the TaskManager and highlight Adobe Premiere Pro.exe
    Right-click to "End Process"
    No need to reboot the whole system; just launch Premiere Pro again and continue with the session. Note that your work reverted to Last Save.
    Hope this helps until the bug is fixed.

    Is it possible to work while printing? I used to be able to do this in MAC OS 9 using background printing. Now, if I want to print multiple copies of a document, I have to wait until all the printing is done before I can continue to work. Is there anyway to set something up so I can work while waiting for the printer to finish?

    Absolutely. In fact, there is no setting to make the printing system take total control of the system.

    I would suggest that you open Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utiltities) and then print a job. Take a look at what is going on in the Activity Monitor. Is the printing taking all of the processor time? I could well be that you are processor and/or RAM bound. That would give the appearance that nothing else is working as everything else would be very, very sluggish.

  • Iphone 6 plus fingerprint is not working while charging

    My iphone 6 plus fingerprint scan is not working while charging. Is this normal?
    I tried my iphone 5s and it works just fine even while charging.

    If you're using generic lightning cable (non-original lighting cable), the fingerprint scan doesn't work while charging.
    I just find it weird as my iphone 5s works even if i'm not using the original lightning cable though.

    Hate to say it. I isolated this to only be happening with email/Mail program. Then ran Sophos Virus detector on it and it did show a trojan virus in my email spam folder. I eliminated it ; ran disk utility a couple of times and  I am good now. Spent the whole day on it though before I thought of using a virus scan... as soon as I started running sophos it stopped sending me the two minute timer as well--so just opening the virus software was able to disengage whatever was happening. My computer is all mac --no PC interface added at all. Hope that was that. Thank you for responding.

    Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches after installing new software or apps.

    You don't need to have Lightroom 3 and 4 installed on your computer to install Lightroom 5.  Just install Lightroom 5 and input your serial number for 3 in the previous version box and your serial number for 5 in the upgrade box.

  • Why is firefox continuously connecting while on a web page? The wheel is spinning every 10 seconds or so. I reinstalled firefox so I need help.

    Firefox is continuously "connecting" while I am on the web. It does not matter what site I am on but it keeps connecting (wheel spinning) every 10 seconds or so. Like it is reloading the page. The page does not go away, but it is driving me crazy as it did not used to do this. I did download a free trial of WordPerfect, but it was not what I was looking for and deleted it. I also reinstalled Firefox, so I am not sure what is going on. Help Please! I have a Windows 7 Sony Vaio computer. I ran the virus check a couple of times and it came up okay.

    It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
    Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
