Controlling PDF Output Resolution when converting AutoCAD to PDF

I have a standalone java application that converts AutoCAD formats to PDF using the VectorConvertOptions AutoVue API settings. The transformations work fine but on some documents the PDF output quality is bad. Any tips or code snippets as to how to manipulate the transformation in order to create higher resolution PDF's? Im thinking I have do something with the pen settings?
Thanks in advance!

DPI is controlled by the AutoVue Document Converter driver
It can not be modified through the convert options
Your drawing is probably small enough so that it does not fit the default settings, but printing uses a 150 DPI by default and convert defaults to 300 or 600 depending on the version you have
So getting a better picture when you print than convert is something you would not expect, unless DPI for convert has already been modified.
Even through PDF is a vector format, it uses integer number for the coordinates (in points)
so you are bound to run into this issues the smaller the drawing you are trying to convert
That is even more problematic if you have fixed width line styles (like acad has)
Which version of AutoVue are you using?

  • Reduced in resolution when converting from Visio to PDF in Visio 2013

I have a .NET application that converts Visio files to PDF using the Document.ExportAsFixedFormat method. This works fine in Visio 2010. However, upon upgrading to Visio 2013, the exact same code is producing PDF with much lower resolution that is unsuitable
for print. I am not sure what is wrong. Is there something I can do to export high resolution PDF with Visio 2013? Thanks!
    The following is my code:
    _app.ActiveDocument.ExportAsFixedFormat(VisFixedFormatTypes.visFixedFormatPDF, // Format
    pdfpath, // Output path
    VisDocExIntent.visDocExIntentPrint, // Output quality
    VisPrintOutRange.visPrintFromTo, // Range
    1, // Start page
    -1, // End page
    false, // Color as black
    true, // Include background
    false, // Include document properties
    false, // Indicate tag structure
    true, // Use ISO 19005-1 (PDF/A).
    System.Reflection.Missing.Value // FixedFormatExtClass

    Hi Eugene
I am using visFixedFormatPDF, visDocExIntentPrint, and visPrintAll, but there is no improvement in the resolution of the PDF.
The Type.Missing value can only be used for the last parameter. The other parameters require either bool or int, so I get compile errors if I try to use Type.Missing.
I also notice the reduction of resolution in Visio 2013 only applies to bitmap images copied into the Visio file. Lines and shapes drawn in Visio still looks fine. I am getting this problem even if I simply select the Save As menu option and select PDF,
so this problem could be independent of office.interop.
Is there something I can do to avoid the degradation of resolution of bitmaps in Visio 2013? Everything is fine in Visio 2010.

  • How to stop Preview from changing resolution when converting JPEGs into PDF

I am combining several JPEGs of identical resolution into a PDF using Preview, using either the sidebar or Automator action (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11893607). For some reason, Preview changes the resolution of the PDF so viewing it at actual size (100% zoom) is bigger and pixellated. Example: a 960x600 JPEG becomes approx 1355x845. I figured it had something to do with dpi and indeed if I do the calculation and open up each JPEG in Photoshop and resize (without resampling, i.e. without changing pixels) to 101.5, the resulting PDF is pretty close to what it should be. (Calculation = 1355/960 * 72dpi.) But the slight resize and recompression lowers quality, plus it's a huge pain to go through all of that for every image.
This issue is the same for simple saving a single image, the combining and use of Automator script has no impact.
My question, in summary: how do I get Preview to save a JPEG as a PDF without changing its resolution?

I have the same problem. I have a bunch of scanned documents (jpeg), and have been trying to make them a multi page document, instead of 20+ images.
Using the Automator "New PDF from Images" preview action v1.0, supplied by Apple with Snow Leopard, and I am able to convert the images to a PDF.
Using these images, the first page being 1032 x 1600 pixels, and telling the automator action to +size each page to fit image+, I convert them into a PDF.
    Converted PDF is viewable here.
The original JPG is clearly higher resolution than the PDF, and the PDF loses the crispness of the original scan. Even using "+size each page to fit image+" does not make the page the original image size.
What's happening here, and does anyone know a better way to convert Jpegs to PDF on the Mac - and keep the image resolution? I don't care about files sizes here, but keeping resolution and maintaining quality.

  • Image loses resolution when converting from pages to jpg

I created an ad for my son's yearbook in Pages.  It is 9MB but I need to submit as jpg.  The only way I can figure to do that is to convert from Pages to PDF and from PDF to JPEG.  However when I do this, it shrinks from 9MB to just over 1MB which is too low rez.  Can anyone help?  I'm on a deadline. Thanks!!!

OSX outputs pdfs at 72dpi if there is any transparency such as shadows, reflections, charts and of course directly specified transparency.
The jpeg is generated from a pdf and is the wrong method of producing an ad, which should remain text/vector to stay sharp, with photographic style images at 300dpi.
jpegs should only be used for purely photographic material because it makes everything else fuzzy.
Your ad should be supplied as a vector pdf. If it has photographic material do not use transparency effects and make sure the images are at least 300dpi at final size.

  • How to output data when converting labview vi into matlab mex functions

    Hi,
I am a fairly new user to labview and am currently working on labview
7.1. I have created a labview vi which can extract data from ni daq
6070e in real time. The problem is that this code has to be converted
so that it can be used with matlab.in order to do that i am using math
interactive tool kit which converts the labview code into mex files
which can then be used in matlab. Unfortunately i have not been able to
figure out how to output this data so that it can be processed in
matlab easily. i cannot afford any loss of information and all the
output must happen in real time. the o/p must take place after the fft
has been done. i am attaching the vi for convenience. There are 10
broken wires ,and this is the place where i want the o/p to be
    generated.
Also do let me know if this vi can be further improved.

    Manuj,
You seem to have misunderstood the way in which LabVIEW processes data.  The code that you have produced will run in exactly the same way without the need for the case structure.
The code does not actually run the data from the previous case. It is merely processing data from the previous loop iteration, regardless of the case. If you were to remove the case structure, leaving only one copy of the code intact, and remove the toggle switch you have produced, or used the shift register which, I assure you would have worked, then you will have exactly the same functionality.
I have attached an example that uses the shift register to toggle cases, but also iterates that the case structure is not needed by using the same feedback node (and code) without a toggle switch or case structure.
Hope this helps you optimize your code

  • Converting AutoCAD to PDF (in monochrome)

Objective: to convert multiple AutoCAD files (via Windows Explorer) to PDF - converting from color to monochrome.
Now......I can successfully print to pdf from within AutoCAD and get monochrome outcome by selecting appropriate plotter configuration.
My problem is stemming from attempting for this same outcome by selecting multiple files within Windows Explorer, right clicking, and selecting "Convert to..." options.
    1. I always get the color version
    2. PDF plots tend to have additional white space/margins (not printing to page size).
    - I've played with default settings in the print driver itself.
    - I've been in Distiller and attempted some customized settings there.
I just can't seem to find where/how to get a positive outcome on this one.
Since my job entails me to do this routine quite often I would greatly appreciate any assistance I can get from you "pro's" out there.
Cuz' this "one at a time" routine in AutoCAD is wayyyy too time consuming.
    With great appreciation!
    Tracy
I should also include the facts that I am using:  AutoCAD 2011, and Adobe Acrobate 9 Pro.

I am also having trouble with converting AutoCAD DWG to Adobe PDF.  I have tried several different methods.  I've tried outputing the color PDF to a post script file, however that is still in color.  I've tried using custom Color Plot Styles (monochrome.ctb) and Named Plot Styles (monochrome.stb), but since I did not create the original AutoCAD DWG (it is 10 years old from 2004), they are not the correct plot style files.  I do not have AutoCAD and use ProE/Creo instead.  I've tried importing into my CAD tool, however all the fonts are different.  I've also tried exporting the PDF to a raster format like TIFF but the resolution is really bad for engineering drawings.  If I increase the resolution, then it sometimes will say that the image is too big and in cannot save/export the image.
It seems like this should be really simple to do in Adobe.  I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 10.  I can go to Tools > Print Production > Preflight > PDF Fixups > Convert to grayscale, which will convert to grayscale, but not to monochrome.  Similarly I can go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors and select Conversion Profile to Gray Gamma 2.2, however that still will produce grayscale, but not monochrome.

  • How do I make the images look clear in PDF when converted from MS Word?

    Hi
When I convert an MS Word-2010 file (which  contains  images also) to PDF through Acrobat X Pro, some images which are of bigger size do  not look very clear. Is there any workaround for this problem? Please  reply. It's quite urgent.
    Thanks

In my experience (not necessarily the best), I find it best to rescale image copies with a graphics package before importing into WORD or whatever. Resize and then set the resolution to about 600 dpi before you import. The issue of using the clipboard appears to be an issue with WORD 2007 and such. I clipped a 300 dpi image into my technical word processor and then back to a graphic editor and all was preserved. I did the same with WORD 2007 and everything got messed up and the resultant image looked terrible. In fact, in WORD I got the same result if I imported the picture or clipped it from my graphics package. So it appears there are some strange issues with WORD itself.
I am not trying to make any claims here, but just making an observation. The original image was at 300dpi. WORD also changed the 8-bit B&W photo to a 24-bit photo and reduced the number of pixels from 774 per width to 252 per width about a factor of 3 reduction in pixel resolution when clipped. When I expanded the image size in WORD, then the clip size increased also. When I do the same expansion of the image size in my word processor and then clip back to IrfanView, the original image is retained. My only conclusion is that OFFICE 2007 plays around with graphics and it does not seem to make any difference if you clip the image into WORD or import it, WORD still messes around with it. My guess this is just a general MS thing.
Some folks a year or 2 ago got me to looking at nice sunsets in PPT. There were all sorts of issues with creating the PDF (AA8) from the PPT to get a reasonable result. The image obtained from the MS converter seemed to keep the picture nice. The images obtained from PDF Maker and printing to the Adobe PDF printer gave slightly different results and tended to break the image into smaller parts that often left little lines in the picture if you zoomed in. Folks were blaming this on Acrobat and yet using the same version of Acrobat with OFFICE 2003 the sunset came out great.
This post is a bit jumbled, but the jist is that a lot of the graphics issues with WORD files seem to go back to WORD itself  and possibly with hooks MS put into OFFICE (OK, no proof on that and probably impossible to prove) to mess up Acrobat conversions. It would be interesting to see if the same result for the PDF is obtained from other converters, or if it is just something that OFFICE 2007 does "nicely" for Acrobat.
Sorry for going off the deep end, but I just have a major annoyance with OFFICE starting with 2007, particularly for things like this. They couldn't get equations right either, just one more thing that they messed up. As far as I am concerned, a lot of the issues stem from MS and not Acrobat.
Just for the heck of it, I ran the PPT picture through Open Office and used both the PDF export and the print to the Adobe PDF printer. Both retained the full image. However, when clipping from OOP to Irfanview, the resolution was 96dpi. The result seemed to be dependent on the zoom. So there are definitely some issues with copy and paste, at least with how some packages handle it.

  • Problem with page size when converting spool to PDF

I have a SmartForm invoice which is formatted perfectly when I print it using the printer options specified when I open the form. However, when I send the output to spool, convert it to PDF using FM CONVERT_OTFSPOOLJOB_2_PDF, then print to the same printer, the format is not correct.
The PDF generation feature treats the page (standard letter size, portrait) as too large and shrinks the output to fit the page. It scales the entire invoice down by about 1/4 inch, which throws off our mailing envelope.  If I change the page scaling option of Adobe Reader to 'None', my invoice is scrunched up into the top left corner of the page.
My page format is LETTER Portrait.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Why does spot EPS not output when converted to CMYK or grayscale?

Apologies if this is a known issue but I can't find it anywhere... I'm using AI CS3 (13.0.2) on an Intel iMac/Os 10.5.4 and I can't figure out why a white logo made from text outlines outputs fine to PDF if I use a spot color but if I change it to grayscale or CMYK, part of the logo doesn't output at all.
The part which self-destructs is a supplied roundel of Caflisch text which has been converted to outlines (unfortunately I don't have the font on my system to do any deep testing). Another part of the supplied logo is a line drawing which outputs fine in any color mode.
So I'm really looking for something to explain why the text part of this roundel outputs fine as a spot color but disappears from view when converted to CMYK or grayscale. I have been placing the file in a Quark 7.1 document and then exporting to PDF but I see the same problem when using the Flattener Preview.
    Thanks for any help.
    Simon

Sorry for talking to myself like this -- been doing it for years...
Finally found out what was wrong: the submitting designer had set the white coloured text objects to overprint. When I set them to knock out all was well.
Kudos to Acrobat Pro Preflight for pinpointing the problem.

  • Hypertext links are not always preserved from Word to PDF, using Aperçu or Adobe, depending on OS 10 or Lion. Why? This generally works perfectly in Windows. Why are Apple and Adobe unable to correctly handle links when converting from Word to PDF?

Hypertext links are not always preserved from Word to PDF, using Aperçu or Adobe, depending on OS 10 or Lion. Why? This generally works perfectly in Windows. Why are Apple and Adobe unable to correctly handle links when converting from Word to PDF?
Depending on the system version, and Office Word version:
    - a pure URL link starting with http or even www sometimes works in PDF, either produced by Aperçu or Adobe, sometimes does not work;
    - other kind of links where the text under display is not a URL, never work!
I like everything with Apple computers and software, except PDF generation. Output files are usually bigger in size, and no better quality, than under Windows. Furthermore, it is weird that something as common as hyperlinks does not work correctly!
I related this question with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, but the problem is still there with Mac OS Lion.
This problem seems to have been around for years, without any proper solution from Apple and/or Adobe! To me, this is very embarrassing!

    Greetings NoNameGiven,
If I understand the problem correctly (I’m not sure I do) you would prefer ‘iii’ to be read as “eye eye eye” rather than “three”? The alt text property is the only way that I know of to make this happen. Hope this helps.

  • Need to control rendering resolution when removing overlapping objects in Acrobat X Pro

When removing hidden information from a PDF using the Acrobat X Pro function Tools | Protection | Remove Hidden Information or Tools | Protection | Sanitize Document, Acrobat appears to remove overlapping objects by rendering the entire page into an image at, from what I can tell, 144 dpi. This resolution is too low for my purposes as small text becomes hard to read both on screen and when printed. Is there a way to control the rendering resolution?

What I was refering to by flattening is the "flatten image" function in Photoshop. As in the option directly below merge visable and merge down in the layers flyout menu. For some reason running that function or the rasterize function in the object menu in illustrator is the only way I can make sure transparecny boxs dont show up when I print through my Fiery Rip software. Like I mentioned this method works well with individual pages in multiple page pdfs, but I often have to do this for many images at a time. It would be nice to be able to do the same thing in Acrobat to the whole pdf all  at one time.( Of course what would really be nice would be if people would submitt their files correctly to avoid this problem in the first place but that is asking way to much)

    Nothing much. Different formats.
    How to fix?
Try editing the original file. Resample pics to a lower resolution, check out other graphics, check table borders (eliminate any dotted lines or borders), check font usage. When generating PDF, try Save As (instead of Print > Save As), although I don't expect that'll make much difference.
Next, open the PDF in Preview, choose File > Save As, choose Format: PDF, Quartz Filterz: Reduce File Size. If that isn't enough, you can use ColorSync Utility to duplicate the Reduce File Size filter, and then edit it for a more aggressive size reduction. But keep in mind that size reduction means lower quality.

  • How do I maintain column formatting when converting from PDF to Excel?

How do I maintain column formatting when converting from PDF to Excel? All info is no longer on the lines or in the columns they started out being in? Any help would be appreciated.

    Sara,
Perhaps I am expecting too much from Adobe ExportPDF. The reason I subscribed to this service, for which I pay a yearly fee, was that I need a way to  convert scanned and digital documents to Word &/or Excel. I read the link you included but to be candid the more I tried to understand what was written the more confused I got. The process should not be this difficult. Currently I am using a NEAT scanner to create PDF documents of whatever I scan. After I changed the OCR setting on Adobe ExportPDF the output was much better but not to the point it was usable as it was. Information that appears to be lines and columns are sometimes not recognizing two columns and just putting them together in one. Obviously not usable. The other thing it does is bunch numbers that appear in a column that are just a bunch of numbers that I have no way of fixing.
Please let me speak to someone who can help me. Right now I not getting anything of value in my paid subscription.

  • How do I change the pixel size when converting Word doc to .pdf?

When converting a Word Document to .pdf the file size is too large. How do I reduce the pixel size?

Typically a Word file's content is text which has not image association.
For whatever images might be in the Word file you'd want to adjust image resolution in an image editor prior to bringing the image into the Word file from which the PDF is made.
