Controlling solid state switches

Hello,
I appreciate your help in advance.
I'm designing an a protection system for small electrical network.I'm trying to open and close solid state switches based on voltage and current measurements.
I will collect my measurements with 9205, my questions are:
1- Which one do u recommend for solid state switching 9375 with digital output or 9485 with external DC supply, given that the switch that i'm using accepts control signal from 4-32 VDC and maximum current is 25mA.
2- It is written in Ni 9375 manual that the digital output is based on the supply voltage, please clarify and what's the relation and how to select the supply voltage?.
3- If i intalled 9205 and 9485 or 9375 on chassis 9174 (4 slots) will it work properly without problems?

Have you tried anything yet? SSR's are pretty simple devices.
Look at the datasheet for the source and relays, specifically the voltage and current specs of each one. As long as the relays need less power than the source can supply, it'll be fine.
I would wire in an e-stop if a loss of PC control can make the system unsafe. Watchdog timers can do this as well, but an e-stop is always a good idea with big-power stuff.

  • NI 6008 to control I/O Solid State Relay Omega DCO5-C

    Hi NI Community,
    I am trying to use my NI 6008 to send a TTL signal for switching 12V DC in a solid state relay (Omega DCO5-C).  This relay is controlling the power to a solenoid valve. 
    For the solid state relay, "output modules receive TTL signals from the computer interface, and will switch ac or dc power lines on or off".   The LED light on the backplane light up when 5V is supplied, but I do not get switching of the 12V DC power.  
    Can I not send the appropriate TTL signal with my NI 6008?   Is there any way to create the correct signal?  I have read up on TTL signals, but this has been my only lesson.
    Any advice is appreciated.

  • How can I use my NI 9401 to send a 5V signal to a solid state relay?

    To start off, I am a complete novice to LabVIEW and I am working on my senior capstone project. Please, bear with me and I will try my best to help you help me.
    I am wanting to use my NI 9401 to send a voltage to a solid state relay so that I can control the temperature of a heating element. Ideally what I want to do is:
    1. LabVIEW sends voltage to relay.  
    2. Relay turns on.
    3. Heating element reaches desired temperature.
    4. LabVIEW does some sort of pulse to maintain that temperature.
    Right now I have one wire set inside of DIO 4 (or pin 20?) because I have read that 4:7 are for outputs. I also have another wire in the first COM slot (pin 1?).  I believe that these two wires will be placed in the "input signal" spots on the diagram below. 

    Your description is not very clear for me. However, usually output lines of control boards do not have a 5V signal as required by a solid state relay. The output usually is "TTL compatible" which means that it may be anywhere between 2.8V and 5.0V in high state. 
    Usually solid state relays are connected to an "open collector output". Most digital outputs can be used in this mode, too. You have to wire the (+) terminal of the relay to a 5VDC source (many boards have a 5VDC output - with limited current capacity, when using an external 5VDC source the GND terminal of the latter must be connected to GND or COM of the board). The (-) output goes to the digital output of the board. When wiring this way, logic states are inverted with respect to the relay operation. The relay will be ON when the digital output is in LOW state and will be OFF when the output is in HIGH state. 
    Check the current limit of your output line in "sink mode" and compare it with the current requirement of the relay input. Most solid state relays require 10 to 20 milli-amps at the input which is well inside the current limit of most digital outputs (usually 24 milli-amps, sometimes 48 milli-amps). 

  • HP Mini 1000 - Solid State HD Constantly Thrashing - Slowing System Down

    I recently bought an HP Mini 1000 (the actual model number is the 1100 CTO).  It came with the HP flavor of Linux.  I put the Windows 7 RC on it, as several others have, and noticed incredibly poor performance with the 32GB solid state hard disk.
    The symptoms are whenever the disk starts to write, the system is completely unresponsive.  I cannot scroll down on browser windows, I cannot launch new processes, I cannot switch tabs, keyboard input is not recognized (until the hard disk stops writing).  This happens way too frequently, pretty much any time I load a web browser page or do anything on the system.  The hard drive thrashes about 80% of the time that I'm using it.
    I have the upgraded 2GB of memory, so I'm not sure why there are so many disk writes going on.  I am also not sure why disk writes are taking so long to complete... I thought disk speed was supposed to be faster on a solid-state drive.
    I've done numerous things to improve performance:  ensuring superfetch and all indexing operations are disabled, turned off the page file,  etc.  However I still cannot get the system to perform to a point where it is usable, and am seriously considering sending it back and having the regular disk put in it.
    Is there anything I can do? 

    XP Home SP3 (32-bit).  Machine is still basically a fresh install, essentially as shipped, with Windows and Norton patches. Swap file is off since it seems like a bad idea for SSD-based systems in general.  I also eased some of the graphics settings (like displaying window contents when moving windows) since that's more eye candy than necessary.
    HP's tech suggested checking for bad blocks.  Doesn't seem to have helped.  My intention in getting the machine was to configure a dual-boot with a yet-to-be-determined linux distro (I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on the dying P3 laptop I'm using to write this -- so, yes, I'm finding a 2001 vintage consumer-grade laptop preferable to our new Mini 1000s...).
    Performance may actually improve after being on for 30 minutes to an hour.   Perhaps Windows has begun to cache things in RAM as it should.  That doesn't really work for a netbook, though, since the whole point is availability when you need it.  
    I wonder if these SSDs have the notorious jmicron controller.  I'm not sure how to check.  Supposedly if you have XP professional or embedded you can use a module called Enhanced Write Filtering (EWF) as a sort of buffer.  It isn't shown in the Windows XP Home help menu, though, so it might not be included.

  • Setting Up SSD Solid State Drive for Cache...Help!

    I am trying to configure my system to do really heavy special effects using After Effects and other programs.  I bought a new computer with specs below and a Solid State Drive for the cache as recommended in the White Papers.  I plug the SSD into a port on top of the machine.  I must have it configured wrong because I keep getting the message "disk cache folder cannot be the root of a volume."  I don't know how to configure this correctly so my work will use the SSD properly.  Can someone walk me through this?  Nicole  The SSD is a Seagate SSHD 1TB hybrid drive that is supposed to boot and perform like an SSD.  The motherboard is an Asus X79 and the processor is an i7 4820k (Ivy Bridge E) Thanks!

  • Adding Solid State Hard Drive

    Hi. I recently purchased my Mac Pro, and my wife and I both use it heavily for Creative Suite. I've decided that I'd like to upgrade to get the best performance I can (within economic reason, of course) out of it. So I've been doing a lot of research on solid state drives (SSD's). Now, I actually have a few questions regarding the addition of an SSD.
    1. I'm aware of the form factor problem, and I've built comps from the ground up before, so I expect this to be an easy hurdle, but could it be any worse than having to use a SATAII cable or rigging the chassis a bit?
    2. It's stated openly and assertively that a user should NOT defrag an SSD. Now, I've read that OSX usually does maintenance if the computer is on at around 5:00 AM (Please tell me if this is not the case.) Does it go through an automatic defrag process? If so, how can I turn that off? And is there anything else OSX does during maintenance that I should change when adding an SSD?
    3. 32 GB looks like it should cover installation of OSX and CS3. (My current system only takes up 28 GB. Should I still jump to 60 GB capacity?
    4. Finally, I'm concerned about compatibility with the OS altogether. It's reassuring that the combination has been applied to the Mac Air successfully, but are there any key differences in OS configuration (between MBA and MacPro) besides what I've already asked about? Multi Level vs. Single Level hard drive use/success comes to mind, but I'm only aware of a performance difference. (To others considering the switch, Single Level is said to be better/faster, but much more expensive.)

    I would forget SSD for now. And don't worry (or leave your system on at night) any defragging would be on the fly as needed when a file is being written out to disk, not in the background (this is not Speeddisk or iDefrag or Diskeeper after all). You may want to backup/erase and restore your system from time to time, and erase your scratch array as needed between projects.

  • Recounting My Successful Experience Upgrading My Solid State Hard Drive

    I just successfully upgraded my solid state hard drive from
    60 gigabytes to 256 ; the machine is a Lenovo T400s - while the upgrade is
    still fairly fresh, I thought I’d share my experience – maybe someone else will
    benefit – most of what I’m about to relay was provided by Zoltanthegypsy and
    GMAC-R60 – I thank them again for their advice - but I will try to add some
    additional thoughts based on my experience – for the most part I was able to
    use the tools provided by Lenovo – my original hard drive had 3 partitions, S
    (system), C ( windows + my programs & data), & Q ( Lenovo stuff like
    backup and restore, the factory copy, etc.) :
    Create a “factory state” copy of the machine to
    DVD or CD soon after purchase – I say soon after purchase because it appears that
    a minimum amount of hard disk space is required – my 60 gig was almost full and
    I got a message that there wasn’t enough space – I can still make the copy but
    I’ll have to move some things off temporarily – this step isn’t really related
    to the upgrade but it is a good idea –  Start/Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools and you’ll see
    the option – and as Zoltanthegypsy has pointed out you will most likely not be
    able to do this from the new hard drive after the restore operation covered
    below – I haven’t proven this out but I do know that my Q space on the new
    drive is smaller than before – something was lost and it’s most likely the
    factory state – and so keep the old hard drive long enough to make that factory
    state copy to DVD or CD.
    The next step was a full backup to a Lenovo
    external hard drive – it came with one partition - the external that I got from
    Lenovo has a small keypad and is password enabled – this fact will come into
    play further on – as GMAC-R60 noted a pop-up will appear giving the option to
    create rescue media – you want to select this option so that the external will be
    bootable.
    When the backup is complete you want to swap hard
    drives making sure to first unplug & remove the battery .
    There may be other ways to do this next step but
    here’s what I did – I powered on the machine and let it go through what
    appeared to be a BIOS routine – note that my external was attached to the
    laptop but it wasn’t activated by keying in the password – after the BIOS
    routine was finished I activated the external by typing in the password and then
    did a Control/Alt/Delete – the machine restarted and booted from the external –
    with hindsight I probably could have connected & activated the external
    before powering on but the instructions that came with the external suggested
    something different which didn’t work for me .
    I was now able to go into rescue and recovery
    and do a complete restore to the new drive – but to my surprise the extra space
    that I bought with the new drive ended up all in the Q partition – and Windows
    Disk Management didn’t enable me to reallocate the space to C.
    And so I purchased Disk Director 11 Home by
    Acronis – a $50.00 investment in a tool that I’ll probably never use again but
    I’m now able to use an $800 solid state drive rather than trying to recoup some
    money via Ebay -– within minutes I was able to reclaim the space and I now have
    enough C space to last the lifetime of the laptop – especially since all
    pictures go on a stick & my demographic isn’t into video games .
    One useful piece of information that I got from
    a user on the Acronis forum was that all of the Lenovo tools like rescue and
    recovery, etc. are available for download from the Lenovo website – and so if worse
    came to worse I could have deleted that Q partition, stretched C using Windows
    Disk Management , and then downloaded the Lenovo tools into C.
    One thing I’d like to learn to do would be to
    perform all the steps outlined above but without using the Lenovo tools – using
    Windows 7 tools instead but not having a Windows CD , i.e. how do you boot

    It went something like this:
    (On the stock drive)
    Plugged in a blank USB HDD, and a blank USB flash drive.
    - HDD formatted in NTFS, flash drive in FAT16.
    Ran the recovery media creator.
    - Created bootable media on flash drive, and put the recovery image on the HDD.
    Once done, shutdown, removed the battery, swapped the drive for a 500GB Scorpio Black (freshly NTFS quick-formatted). USB HDD and flash drive were still attached.
    Booted, and used F12 to select the flash drive for booting.
    It booted into the Windows Recovery Environment and I chose the Lenovo restore factory image option at the bottom of the list.
    From there on out, I just clicked through the wizard, and it restored.
    Upon finishing, I unplugged all of the external media, and had it restart. It then booted into OOBE as expected.

  • Solid State RAID or no? GTX 470, playback is jumpy still

    I am currently shooting with 3 Sony HDR CX550v cameras. When trying to edit it's very jumpy, almost impossible to edit. I used to use 3 Sony HDR SR1's. Both used AVCHD codec. On CS4 I was able to edit 3 tracks and sometimes more and it would scrub decent and playback most of the time decent, it was bearable at least. Transitions would be jumpy and I would render to preview when adding any effects. I knew I probably needed to upgrade my hard drives to a RAID.
    Here's my Hardware as it was:

    Before I upgraded/installed Premeire Pro CS5 I reinstalled windows 7 64 bit, nuked everything, started fresh. Then installed CS5, then updated it. After trying the hack I replaced the EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS Superclocked 640MB PCIe that I though was future proof when I bought it over a year ago, the hack didn't work on the 8800 GTS despite the fact that it has over 100 CUDA Cores. I replaced it with a PNY GTX 470 so I could use the mercury playback engine.
    It seemed at first to edit better with the GTX 470 then with the 8800 GTS in that transitions played back smooth. I even changed the brightness on one of the video tracks and it played back fine without having to render. But, about half way through I started experiencing jumpy playback.
    I believe I need a better hard drive configuration. According to windows my primary hard disc is 5.9 out of 10, everything else is either 6.9 or 7.3. And, with the task manager open viewing the Performance while I play the timeline the CPU and memory seem to be doing great but playback is jumpy. So, I guess I need to upgrade to a RAID.
    My mother board can do a RAID 0 or 1. But, I don't know enough about RAID to do it confidently and I don't trust anyone in this small town to do it for me. So, I need to know, should I:
    do a RAID using my mother board to control it? if so, RAID 0 or RAID 1 (I can occasionally back up stuff to a slaved drive, right?)
    do a RAID with 2 solid state drives or 2 hard drives?
    Get a solid state drive for the operating system and have a RAID separately for programs?
    do an eSATA RAID?
    Serial Attached Storage (SAS)
    iSCSI
    Networked Attached Storage (NAS)
    Number 5, 6, and 7 are some options my friend told me to look into. I did a little and being getting stressed with all the options. I really don't want to understand all the options, I just want to know what will work and move on.
    I found on the forums something about RAID 3 being the best but a friend that knows about this stuff didn't know why that would be better than RAID 5.
    I'm so swamped with my day job, being a father, and trying to get my video business going that I don't know if my brain can handle trying to figure out much more. I got excited about Solid State and thought that would be an easy option, but the more I got to digging the more I found that it has some flaws too.
    The bottom line is, I just want to edit AVCHD without having playback issues during the editing process. I've tried Neoscene by Ceneform but that turned out to be converting the files to an insanely large size. I canceled the conversion when I saw that my 4.7 gig AVCHD was growing over 30 gigs! Yikes! and it was taking forever. I would prefer to not add another step to the work flow and what not. Life is too short for all that mess. I just need to edit without playback hesitations.
    I'll move the timeline indicator and there's this annoying delay, I hit the space bar and delay, I playback and it's jumpy, I try to scrub the timeline and it's not showing anything. While there are some subtle improvements with the new graphics card and MPE enabled to use it, it's otherwise all worse than before it seems. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ok, I should have said this.
    With my current processor and good old set up I didn't have these playback issues.
    Now, here's an update, this is what I shared with someone else earlier today:
    I am editing multiple tracks of AVCHD video. The project at the moment is about 50 minutes long with three video tracks. The computer has a fresh, new Windows 7 Pro 64 bit install on it. Really, that's all that's on my system along with the Adobe Master Collection CS5.
    Since my change from CS4 to CS5 I have not been able to edit video as well, it's really bad now. First I reinstalled windows and installed CS5 and didn't change any hardware. The performance was not good so I removed my GeForce GTS 8800 video card and purchased and installed a new GTX 470 certified adobe video card. That didn't work so I purchased 2 new hard drives to create a RAID, that didn't work either, still the same performance issues. After all of this in the last week, and now I'm wondering what do I do next? Here is my system hardware at the moment:
    Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9650 (12M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)

    I have the OS and CS5 on the RAID, the project on the fast WD hard drive, the media cache and preview files on a slaved drive, I even tried moving my media files to a slaved drive. It continuously, no matter what I do, performs the same.
    The permance issues are:
    when I move the timeline indicator there is often a pause before it will play
    when i jump around using the page up and page down keys there is often a pause
    when i move tracks there is often a pause
    when I hit the space bar to preview there is a pause/delay, and then it may sometimes playback fine but in certain spots the video stops and then resumes and does this often
    when i scrub the timeline the preview doesn't display
    I did add one effect on one track, that is brightness, but that is all.
    What's weird is when I would edit AVCHD in CS4 I didn't have these problems. But, in CS5 I do notice some minor improvements, like in CS4 simple default transition would hang up for a bit, but the rest of the editing experience was easy. This is the other way around. It plays through almost all the transitions, even when the brightness effect is on one of the tracks, but everything else is horrible!
    I've also been trying different settings, I've updated my video driver, RAID driver, and everything else in the device manager looks great.
    I need help bad, otherwise I'm going to have to return CS5 and go with a different NLE real soon. I've wasted too much time now, please help.

    I have a Macbook Pro currently with a 128GB Solid State Drive. I was wondering if it is possible to add to the drives for larger memory or do I just have to completely buy a new Solid State drive which would be the 256 GB I am guessing? If that would be the case is it hard to switch everything over from the drives?

    No, there is no way to increase the capacity of a drive. You will need to buy a new one.
    Replacing it on a MacBook Pro is pretty simple. Take the bottom cover off, and between the HDD and logic board there is a small retaining clip with two PH00 screws in it. Take that off, then carefully lift the HDD up and disconnect the data and power cable. Be careful not to tear that cable, or it will have to be replaced. Then you need to transfer the 4 pins sticking out of the old drive to the new one, those are usually T6 Torx screws, and just put everything back like you found it after that. That retaining bar will only fit on one way, so if the screws don't line up, flip it around.

    I am upgrading my mac mini with a solid state drive, although i already have Creative Cloud on my current harddrive. Will I be able to download Creative Cloud to my solid state drive from the same Creative Cloud account? Or will I need to subscribe to a new membership?

    You should be fine to make a copy of your current setup onto a SSD disc, using SuperDuper:

    I am going the same way as you soon, and got this description from the guys at Shirt-Pocket:
    First, prepare the new drive (in a drive dock or similar) by partitioning it:
    * Start Disk Utility
    * Select the external drive hardware in the sidebar
    * Click the Partition tab (if it doesn't appear, you selected the volume, not the drive hardware above it)
    * Use Disk Utility's controls to divide the drive as needed, even as a single large partition. Use "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as the format type and name appropriately
    * Click Options
    * Choose the proper partition scheme (GUID for Intel macs, Apple Partition Map for Power PC) and accept the page
    * Click Partition.
    Then, make a full "Backup - all files" with "Smart Update" or "Erase, then copy" to the new drive.
    Rename the drive to have the *same* name as the original.
    Now, shut down and swap the drives.
    Power back up -- you'll notice it'll take a while to start (it's looking for the original drive). When it finally boots, open System Preferences and select the new drive as the startup drive in the Startup Disk preference pane.
    You will of ourse need to make sure that the amount of data on your current drive does not exceed the size of the SSD.

  • 1 solid state drive or two ATA?

    I have a Macbook with 2GB RAM. I run VMware Fusion with WinXP installed for .NET development. Sometimes it can bog the machine down. For example, when the sql server IDE is starting up. For the most part, it all works fine.
    I don't see the option to get a Macbook with two hard drives. I imagine that would use up battery time quickly. Would one solid state drive be faster than one ATA drive in my case, since that is currently an option?

    Like it was said, Apple only buys from third parties. For the most part they don't even identify the RAM the install or sell as Apple-OEM parts like you see on hard drives.
    Still - Apple at the very least uses modules that they're sure will work. The memory controller seems to be very fincky with DDR3 memory. There seems to be a lot of reports that people have gotten memory from OWC, Crucial, etc and had compatibility problems, including kernel panics. That's usually because there's something marginal about the memory's compatibility with the controller, where it passes power-on self test but eventually fails during regular operation. I guess heat could be an issue, as that slows down semiconductor switching speeds. I've heard of electronics that have been cryogenically cooled to improve performance.
    At the very least you could get your memory from a retailer that has a compatibility guarantee. I would think by now Crucial or OWC have figured out what the problems may have been. Crucial.com is selling the 2x2GB kits at a pretty good price.

  • Solid State Drives, Trim and Oracle

    I am having an interesting 'discussion' with my system administrator. He is worried that a database we have running in noarchivelog mode, if moved onto solid state hard drives, will one day start to slow down because of the problem SSDs have about not knowing which blocks can be written to. He is concerned especially that the Oracle Enterprise Linux kernel version does not support the TRIM command which lets an OS get around this problem (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIM)
    My counter-argument to him has been that Oracle doesn't delete anything: the datafiles, control files and online redo logs are created once and then simply have their contents changed, over and over. Nothing is ever deleted, so the no-TRIM limitation is not one we would ever run into. I concede that if we were generating archived redo, and then having rman do a 'delete input', there would be a genuine issue. But this particular database is not in archivelog mode so that doesn't apply.
    Anyone care to comment on the logic of my case (or lack of it, of course!).

    Do not offhand see a flaw in your logic - especially not if the SSD is managed as a single "+raw+" disk via ASM. In this case there is no cooked file system on it that's managed by the o/s. The entire disk (and allocation and free space on it) is managed by ASM.
    But then I would also question the use of what still is not yet a fully matured storage technology for databases - and also why the entire storage layer is not looked ito performance?
    SDD addresses only a very specific part of the storage layer - and often that (with modern storage arrays and their huge memory buffer caches) is not the biggest limitation in I/O thruput. The PCI technology used (for the physical wire connectivity to the storage system) could be the bottleneck. The wire technology (e.g. fibre channel) could the bottleneck. Etc.
    Addressing I/O performance needs a look at the entire storage layer. Not just the disks. (hint - look at what Exadata uses)

    I am planning to control 2 solenoid valves (SMCVT307V) with labview using solid state relays, and I just want to confirm that the SSRs I have chosen are appropriate for NI-6211. I thought of choosing Crydom CN240A05 which works with a voltage of (3-12 V) and the load voltage is 240 VAC with 2 A. Each DAQ digital outputs provide 16mA which I though is proper for the SSR with a typical input current of 15mA at 5VDC.
    I am new to labview system and any help will be appreciated,

    Hi Armina100,
    I am no expert, but I think you might have a hard time driving those relays with your DAQ. I think the relays you picked requiered about 100mA to "close" the contact. My experience with this USB DAQs is that you can not load them too much [low single digits mA].
    Also since you will be using AC solenoids I would recomend you to use zero-crossing relays to reduce posible noise/jitter/etc.
    What I normaly do when using relays is to add and aditional transistor [2n2222a or similar] and a resistor so provide enough power to it. [make sure you use an external source for it, not the internal 5V of the DAQ.

    The spec for the 6341 states a digital output drive current of 24mA.  With that, you should be able to drive most SSRs.  But do check the control currents just to be safe.

  • Mac Pro fans run full speed after installing Solid State Drives

    I recently visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple store because my Mac Pro's fans were running at full speed after installing 2 solid state drives. The genius told me that it was because the drives themselves are so small they don't touch the metal tab on the motherboard that reads the drive's temperature, so it defaults to running full speed. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I've tried smcFan Control but it doesn't let me set the actual fan speed. I'm getting 5200 rpms on my Boost A and B fans, and this causes an insane amount of noise. Can anyone help?

    I have an SSD in a 2009  (MacPro4,1). I removed it from the 2.5 in stamped metal can, and just installed the bare circuit board onto the SATA connector. It does not make any contact with the metal tab below the SATA connector. The only trouble I have is that Tech Tool Pro says its temperature is not optimum when it does disk tests.
