Convert 30fps to 60fps?

Is there reliable way to convert a 24 or 30fps clip to 60fps, in AE CS5? (probably the same in CS4)
Applying Timewarp at 99.99 speed (with Pixel Motion on) doesn't always seem to work. It worked with a 30fps video I tried, but now I have a 24fps one, and it's spitting out tweened frames that aren't very different from the "real" frames (in other words, it's not making the video smoother).
Thanks!

I think we are talking about different things. Increasing fps is pretty meaningless, if the clip is never played at that exact framerate, which applies to a lot of video. You only change the content of the frames for no sensible reason by smooshing in "wrong" pixels. Furthermore, I really don't see the point in adding inbetween frames at the cost of reducing overall sharpness and getting that floaty feel. The resulting frames are never physically exact, anyway, as neither their direction sampling nor their timing mimics a true shutter. Call me old-fashioned, if you will, but I truly don't see any use case for this. In mixed media projects, there may be conformed clips, but nobody would treat all footage just at whim. If this is some requirement for a specific delivery system, then okay, but even then I would assume that just doubling frames looks better than interpolating them. Anyway, your issues are very likely due to not obeying pulldown cadences, which naturally occurs when going from 24fps to 30fps/60fps. Check your footage interpretation on that one. Also verify, that your cam actually shot 24fps, not something else, including possibly "fake" 24fps based on 60fps with tagged frames...

  • Converting 30fps to 24fps

    Hello All,
I recently shot a project for work that I would like to have that "film" look. I shot it at 30fps using a Canon XL1 and would like to convert the footage to 24fps. Is there a filter, effect, or setting in FCP to do this. I have shot in 24fps before using a Panasonic DVX100-A but, since I didn't have that camera at my disposal how can I accomplish this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • How best to convert 24fps to 60fps?

I would like to know the process to interpolate frames in a video recorded at 24fps to make it 60fps.Could anyone help me?

You question begs a question from me. Do you understand frame rates? Why do you want to do that and what do expect to happen? Last question, what kind of 24fps footage do you have?
Let's talk about kinds of 24 fps footage. First, there's real 24 fps footage, then there's 23.976 fps footage which was really 29.976 (ntsc) video which was recorded interlaced (59.97 fields per second) but has had 3:2 pulldown added which you typically get from a little older video camera with a 24fps option, then there is film originally shot at 24 fps but transferred to video using 3:2 pulldown.
Let's talk about 60 fps as a playback format. First, if you video is ever going to hit television of cable then there is no such thing. Everything in NTSC land is 29.97 fps then interpreted as 23.976 and it's all interlaced. What that means is that if you send progressive footage to a broadcaster you get interlaced footage back but it looks progressive because you have pairs of identical fields. If you live in PAL land you get other options. If you are talking playback on the internet via YouTube or vimeo, the standard is still 29.97, 25, 23.976 or 60P if the receiving client has 60p equipement.
If you truly have 24 fps footage with each frame a unique slice in time then when you "convert" that footage to 60 fps there are only two options. The first option is to just play back the footage at 60 fps which means 10 seconds on the clock will playback in 4 seconds so the motion will be sped up. 240 frames divided by 60 = 4.
The second option is that you keep the playback time the same for your 10 second clip by playing back some of the frames more than once. You can either do that by adding a pull down scheme or using time remapping or a plug-in like Twixtor to take the pixels in 2 frames and calculate their new position in the frame based on their projected movement. For example, let's say frame 1 has a rotating pointer that is vertical and pointed straight up and in frame 2 the pointer is horizontal and pointed to the right. If you were converting to 48fps instead of 60 then you would need a new frame between 1 and 2 with the pointer pointed up and to the right at 45º. This is very difficult for software to do with 100% accuracy, especially if there is a lot going on in the scene.
The only other scenario that I can imagine is that you have some true 60 fps footage that you want to use in the same project as your 24 fps footage. If that is the case, then the option I would pursue would be to create my project at 30 fps and use the 60 fps footage in that project and also import the 24 fps footage into the same project. If you have 60 fps footage that is really 60i or 60p then the frame rate is 59.97fps anyway and you could treat the footage as 29.97 with no degradation in quality or frame blending, then you would either re-render your 24 fps footage as 29.97 fps interlaced with 3:2 pull down added or just use it in your comp with frame blending added or use Twixtor to convert the footage to 29.97...
So I guess we need to know exactly what kind of footage you have and what you are trying to do and what you are expecting to accomplish before we can give you a process that will solve the problem.

  • Convert 24fps to 60fps using twixtor?

    Hi folks
I've got this 1080p 24fps (23,976) clip that I'd like to convert to 60fps. I tried using "frame blending" when exporting the clip to 60fps but that didn't look very well.
My idea was to use Twixtor to create those extra frames that doesn't exist.
Twixtor does a much better job creating those extra frames than premiere, the problem is I don't know how to get a slowmo clip play as 60fps?
23,976 / 60 = 0,3996, so in theory I should be able to slow down my clip to 39,96% and then play it as 60fps in realtime, right?
I'm using the latest version of Premiere CC on a new MacBook Pro. Would this be esier to do in AE?
    Any ideas?

I am totally confused by your use of the terms "slomo" and "realtime".
I'm kinda guessing you want to play a 23.976 fps (realtime/normal speed) clip at 59.94 fps realtime/normal speed, if that is incorrect, I apologize.
The correct term for doing this is "Frame rate up-conversion" (use this for your Google searches)
    Twixtor can do this
    http://help.revisionfx.com/tutorial/148/
And After Effects can do this
    http://creativeclouduser.com/converting-frame-rates-with-after-effects /
Final quality can vary based on software and original footage.
Tnx, this was exacly what I was looking for Basically I did exacly as the tutorial, except I changed the sequence settings to 60fps instead of interpret the footage. What is the difference in changing sequence settings and interpret the footage?

  • Convert 30fps Motion template to 24fps

I found info on the boards about converting 24fps to 30, but that does not seem to work in reverse.
I have several (400+) motion templates created at 29.97, which I occasionally need to use at 24fps. When I drop them in the 24fps timeline in FCP, they are fine until rendering, at which point they get truncated. A 12 second intro, although still 12 seconds, only shows approximately the first 9 seconds of the template and abruptly ends.
As a quick workaround, I tried simply fading it out at a convenient point in the intro, so it wouldn't look bad. However, changing the opacity forced a re-render and somehow it still didn't fade out at the right point. For now, I've been creating a separate sequence at 29.97 with just the intro, filling the drop zones, titles, etc, exporting a QT movie, bringing it into compressor to transcode to 24fps and then re-importing into the original timeline.
I tried creating a new 24fps project in motion, copying all the layers from the 29.97 template project and pasting them in, but that also didn't work. To show the whole project, it needed to be approximately 14 seconds. Is there a way, short of completely recreating the projects from scratch, to get this to work? And yes, I know this may all become horribly broken in a few weeks when they release the new version.

I'm sorry I don't have a good answer aside from what you're trying - rendering out a QT movie and putting that in your timeline...

  • IPhone 4S / FCP X: Converting 30fps to 24fps?

I found out after I was done shooting and editing my video that there's an app that lets you shoot 24fps with your iPhone.
I have a project that is finished in FCP X, shot with an iPhone 4S.  Now I just want it to be 24fps (23.98 or whatever) instead of 30fps.
Is it too late?  "Frame rate" in Project Properties only showed 30fps in the pulldown list.  Will FCP do this conversion for me or do I need to use another program?  Compressor?  I can't find anything else in FCP X that will let me make that adjustment.  I did this with FC Express in the past but I forget how and everything looks different in X anyways.
    Thanks.

Start a new project and set your frame rate to 24p
Now import your iPhone clip (which should be 30P) and add it to your primary storyline.
Highlight the clip and click on the retiming option icon.
    Choose Conform Speed
The clip on the timeline will conform to 24P, however as Tom mentioned the clip will slow down a tad and audio pitch will be adjusted by FCP X.
    Hope that helps

  • Converting 30fps audio to 24fps

Anybody run into this issue? I need to convert the live concert audio from 30 fps to 24fps so it will sync with the camera footage. (Don't ask how it happened) Can Compressor do this? Any help would be much appreciated.

    I think compressor will not.
I did similar thing in Windows app called Adobe Audition.
First you need to "resample" - it is in edit menu, then "convert sample type" back to original.

  • Converting 30fps progressive footage to 25 fps interlaced CS5.5

I have received a job from a client who originally booked another company to do the filming and editing. They gave me footage which had been filmed progressive 30fps. I called the company that filmed it and asked them why they filmed it 30fps when it's supposed to be a PAL job. They told me that they did it on purpose to get better slow motion. Would anyone have any idea on how I would do this? Would I do it through after effects? They use MAC so they couldn't assist me in how I should do it.
here is the clips meta data which they supplied me with.

    Saad Khan wrote:
Hi David. Thanks for your reply. We usually slow the speed duration to 25-50% because we're doing wedding videos so the shots look nice and romantic. The company that filmed the footage purposely filmed it 30fps so it could be slowed right down and look really good.
Sorry, but those guys didn't do you any favors by shooting at 30p.  You would have had just the slo-mo you wanted if they had the ability to shoot at 60p.  It can be done at 720 rather than 1080, and it's well-worth doing so.
To get the footage as it is to slo-mo, first conform it to 25fps, then slow it to 50% of normal speed.  If it doesn't look very good to you, you may have to get a third party plugin like Re:Vision's Twixtor, which I THINK (I don't know for certain) is available for Premiere.
There may be some other slo-mo tricks in Premiere, but I'm just starting to learn it so I don't know for certain.  I may just give up learning CS 5.5 and concentrate on CS 6 since Adobe's made big changes to the application; there's nothing to be gained by learning something that's obselete.
Sorry, my work computer doesn't allow me to see Vimeo.  It's a pain.

  • 60fps/30fps slomo

I'm currently working with a 30fps timeline and would like to add a few 60fps clips for slomo. I don't want the entire 60fps clip to be slomo but only a small part of the clip. This leaves the rest of the 60fps clip looking sped up, jumping, unnatural. Is there anything I can do to get the clips looking uniform?
Secondly I'm trying to create a demo reel and have both 60fps and 30fps clips. I set the sequence settings to 60fps for the timeline but I can still tell a big difference in the 30fps and 60fps clips. Is there anything that can be done to make everything look uniform?
I started shooting in 60fps and using 60fps timeline hoping to get rid of the problem above but the 60fps footage still looks unnatural and slightly sped up. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

    That sounds wrong.
You should not see a difference, as FCPX should make sure to play the clips in the correct framerate.
If you have 30 & 60fps and like to make slowmo's, the 60fps clips is the best, as you can go to 50% without needing FCPX to generate middle frames..
    What's the exact timeline settings?
    What camera & settings?
Is it by any chance 1080i in the timeline and 1080p in the camera or visa versa??
Shot and edit in Progressive, then you can always mess it up under export for interlaced... ;-)

  • How about using a 60fps video for a smooth slow motion effect in a 30fps project ?

    Hey all,
I happen to have a video camera that is able to shoot either in 720p/60fps or 720p/30fps.
As you guessed it, 60 fps mode is very useful for action sports when you want to do some slow motion effect running very smoothly.
I have few questions I would love to be answered, and I was not able to find answers till now.
    Here they are :
1/ If I want my final video file to be, let's say, 25 fps, is it mandatory that my project is 25 fps too ?
What will happen if I do a 30fps project and that I export to a 25fps file ? Does Premiere simply remove some extra frames ? Or will it lead to a longer video ? What consequence on the final result if frames are removed ? I mean, will I be able to see any difference or will the difference remain theorical ?
2/ Let's say I have both 30fps and 60fps videos. I set my project to 30fps. If I import my 60fps video to the timeline, it will be adjusted to 30fps and some frames disappear to keep the duration the same. Okay, this is clear to me.
But now, what if I import my 60fps to the timeline, but set the speed to 50% ? Will Premiere apply the 50% to the original file (therefore I should have all the frames displayed on the timeline : 60/2=30 fps), or to the 30fps-adjusted file of the timeline, leading to some jerky footage?
3/ If I want to use my 60fps for slow motion purpose in my 30fps project, would it be a good idea to right-click on this file in the project windows, going to the "modify" menu to set the image frequency to 30fps ?
Because while doing so, if I drag the file to the timeline, I noticed it would last 2 times longer (resulting in a slow motion video) Does that mean that ALL the frames of the original video are displayed ? Can someone tell me what exactly does Premiere ?
I would be very grateful if someone could tell me what are the correct settings to chose in order to realise the best slow motion videos as possible.
    Thanks in advance !

With due respect... this does not answer my question and does not help me that much , but anyway, thank you for the very constructive answer ^^.
I'm not sure I would even have considered doing this by myself...
I hope I do not get this kind of answer because you feel like my question was silly or unpolite... To my mind this was a pretty serious question.
Shooternz, next time you need to go 150 km far away from where you are, go by feet rather than with a car, I'm sure you will have plenty of satisfaction too. Just cross the fingers for you not to be in a hurry while it's raining outside.
Well, I may be naive but i thought some experts already had the answer to this (I guess I'm not the only one who intend to do some slo mo), and would have been kind enough to share this knowledge with me. That's what sometimes happens in communities.
Please note I do not intend others to do the job for me, I'm just asking if someone already knows the answer.
I asked this question because I couldn't find any documentation about this, and I guess asking on internet was the next step, as testing would be like the last resort, being very time consuming.
It was easy to check the effect of dragging a file to the timeline to see if it played normally or not, but it's definitely not to count and compare each frame of some sample file to find if some are lacking, or have been doubled or what....
I assume I would be very happy with just a simple theorical answer either...
So once again, if someone already has been into such questions, I would really pleased him or her to share or report what they experienced. Thanks in advance.

  • Compressor 4 drops frames when converting 25fps image sequences

I am using Compressor 4 to batch convert 30fps and 25fps 1080 tiff image sequences to Uncompressed 10bit 422.
I have created custom presets for both 30fps and 25fps.
    The 30fps conversions are fine.
But the 25fps conversions have missing or dropped frames and the resulting clip is too short. For example a 106 frame image sequence becomes 88 frames when converted to Uncompressed 10bit 422 QT. (which suspiciously similar to the 83.33% difference between 25 & 30 fps)
I have double checked my setting and can not find a problem (see grab)
    Any suggestions much appreciated.

Update: I have found a work around for this problem, but it is not pretty!
By using the 30fps setting even for 25fps sequences, every frame gets included in the resulting QuickTime. But it plays at the wrong frame rate, so I then use Cinema Tools to change the frame rate to 25fps. Then everything is fine.
As Compressor 4 has been around for while, I can't believe this hasn't come up before!

  • Help: Canon hf200 .mts file imported as 29.97FPS instead of 60FPS (60i). How to fix?

Hey everyone, first post, and I have a question. I searched and I couldn't find an answer for this.
I'm filming on a canon hf200 (class 4 sdhc card--if that makes any difference). I'm filming at 24Mbps on the 60i setting, but when I import in to Premiere, the footage gets imported at 29.97FPS. For my sequence settings, I'm selecting desktop, then 59.94 FPS (since I could not find an AVCHD setting with 60fps), and the clips are still not imported as 60 (or 59.94) FPS. Am I missing something? Settings not right? Have to convert to get 60FPS? Any help will be appreciated!

    24Mbps on the 60i setting
It's unfortunate that camera makers cause this confusion.  The proper nomenclature is to only list frame rates, never the field rate.  Sometime people violate that convention and mistakenly list the field rate instead, causing this type of confusion.
Your camera should be labeling the mode as 30i, because that's what it is, 30 interlaced frames per second.

  • DVC Pro HD 60fps footage with LED stage light flicker - anything I can do in Final Cut?

I shot DVCPro HD footage 60fps under LED stagelights.  It looked okay live on my camcorder's LED screen so I didn't think to synchronize.  Playback on FCP 60fps timeline is full of flickers.  Playback on 30fps timeline much less flickers, but looks like some interlacing issues.  Help - can I marry the 30fps and 60fps timelines in one project without making things worse?

    LED stage lights?
    Are you absolutely certain?
Stage lights that flicker at the mains fequency would make any movement on stage a sickening experience for the performers. I don't do stage lighting any more but I cannot imagine dimmable, bright, focusable lighting instruments that are also affordable.
If you have the luxury of reshooting, you must determine the luminaire  type. If it is controlled by a ballast or mains freq, you  must use a shutter speed that at least spans two complete cycles, 1/30th of a second. Better at 1/25th because your electronic shutter can easily get out of sync with the mains and you'll get a weird bar.
    LEDs? Errrmm.  Convince me.

  • Helmet Camcorders - thoughts

Looking at these helmets cams. Anyone using these in iMovie 6 or 11? The GoPro less expensive 720p HD may be good enough and cheaper. Both use h.264 codec so wondering how difficult to edit. Won't re-compressing post edit degrade vid? Info that follows is from the shop.helmetcameracentral site.
    (1) The ContourHD1080p Helmet Camera is the World's First Full HD Wearable Camcorder to shoot and share 1080p video. It features four HD settings (1080p, 960p, and two at 720p) with two frame rates (30fps and 60fps). Records to an internal MicroSD card (16 GB max card) saving as .mov h.264 codec. Mac compatible editing software included. abt $300
    (2) GoPro's HD Helmet HERO Helmet Camera is the world's highest performance wearable 1080p HD video and still photo camera. Professional quality 1080p / 960p / 720p HD resolutions record at 30 and 60 frames per second (60 fps in 720p). Record up to 2.5 hours on a single charge and up to 9 hours total on a 32GB SD card. Saves as mp4/h.264 compression. No software. A 720p HD only GoPro for $100 less.

My wife bought me the GoPro HD for Christmas and after a bit of looking around I discovered that the newest iMovie '11 (ver. 9.0.1) (Single $49.00, Family Pack $79.00) does a great job editing for not much money. It imports the 1080p/30fps files very nicely and there is very little loss of quality.I tested an exported .m4v file side by side with the original .mp4 footage and it's hard to see any difference. iMovie has a bunch of effects you can add and it even allows you to adjust the brightness/contrast/color etc. of selected clips. I still haven't figured out the slo-mo. iMovie imports the 720/60fps video but I'm pretty sure it converts it to 24 fps.
I think the only other choice is to work in Final Cut Pro 7 ($999.00) or Final Cut Express ($199.00), but iMovie is very good for what I need. Depending on what you are doing the 720 only camera may be OK but for the extra $100.00 I think the 1080 quality is worth it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Performance While Gaming On Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2012)

Hi I have asked this question a few times now but I think I may be able to better describe it now after analysing cause and effect. Now I don't know exactly what Mac OS X does to optimize perfromance in fullscreen, but I think in my case it is working to my disadvantage.
I first noticed that when you play a game in windowed mode, leave it open, and then click off it, the game will revert to 30fps as it is not in current use. I understand this implimentation is benefitial, however I think it may be working against me in fullscreen mode.
Many games have a fluctating perfromance based on where you are looking. When I am in an envrionment that is particularly demanding the Fps will drop from 60 to 30 with Vsync enabled; this is fully expected. However when I am in an extremely undemanding enviroment the framerate can also drop. Until now I wasn't entirely sure as to what this was, but now I have a theory.
I beleive that the operating system thinks that because the environment is so easy on the graphics, that it mistakenly diverts processing power away from it, causing an unwaranted drop in performance. I tested this theory while playing starcraft 2. I was playing a game that began at 30 fps on medium settings, the fans were not running and the laptop was cool. I then turned on anti aliasing which I knew would cause a greater demand on the graphics. This as I suspected sent the framrate from 30fps to 60fps. This was also when the fans began to kick in, suggesting to me that the GPU/ CPU was now working as expected. This revelation leads me on to the question I now ask.
Is there a way to force the Operating system to put everything it's got in to an application? I am not talking about overlocking here, I just don't want resources diverted away from the game. Please note that I always shut down down all other applications when gaming, so the power is essentially being wasted.
Just in case this will help with a diagnosis, here are my system Specs.
    i7 3rd gen, 2.6ghz
    Nvidia 650m 1gb graphics
    8gb ram
    Mountain Lion 10.8.4
Lastly, i'd rather not have suggestions such as playing in windowed mode or disabling vertical syncs. I've also reset the SMC already. Thanks for any replies in advance!
